2 Montréal Retrospective 40 Years of Palliative Care at McGill University In 1974, inspired by the work of Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and Dame Cicely Saunders, Dr. Balfour Mount initiated what became a uniquely comprehensive palliative care service including an inpatient unit, an outpatient clinic, a consult service, bereavement support, and a home care program which served as a model for many. Since the establishment of that service at Montréal s Royal Victoria Hospital, Palliative Care McGill (PCM) has been at the fore of advances in this field: integrating PC into health care systems; developing the McGill Quality of Life questionnaire; promoting a whole-person approach to care; pioneering undergraduate and postgraduate training in palliative medicine; developing new ways to manage pain and other symptoms; and hosting the International Congress on Palliative Care. Today, under the direction of Dr. Bernard Lapointe, PCM continues to develop as an exceptional academic program and unique network of PC services. We are delighted to celebrate with you both our 20th Congress and our 40 years of palliative care at McGill. 7 MESSAGE from the Congress Chair and the Director of Palliative Care McGill On behalf of the Congress organizers, welcome to this celebration of palliative care and of our world-wide community. It is an honour to welcome all of you to this event, a biennial tradition we have maintained for the past 40 years. Thank you for coming from far and near, showing your dedication to our great discipline! Since our first Congress in 1976 we have seen palliative care move from a fledgling discipline to one with a robust research base, evident in the quality of the scientific presentations featured here. You will also appreciate the focus on interdisciplinary care. We come here to discuss the latest international trends in palliative care research, practice and health policy. You will hear social scientists teaching us how to deliver more humane care in our increasingly technological world. There are so many vital questions to discuss. How do we decrease suffering when resources are constrained? How do we lead cultural change in helping society value the importance of support to families facing life threatening illness? We trust that we have created a framework to enable us to make the best use of our time together. We hope that you will fully partake of the offerings of this Congress that were prepared for you with great care by generous presenters who have given so much of their time and efforts to prepare their workshops, plenaries and posters. We hope that you take full advantage of every waking hour to network with the colleagues around you, from around the world, including many of the most senior members and seasoned teachers from our world-wide palliative care network. There is such a wealth of experience here! We leave you with a hope that we will be inspired to expand the reach of palliative care beyond our traditional institutions, to those communities that do not yet have access to services, where it is a challenge to access medications and expertise to fill a crying need. 8 ENGLISH SECTION CONGRESS INFORMATION Simultaneous Interpretation Simultaneous interpretation (French-English) is provided for all Plenary sessions (PL1-4), the all-day seminar Nurses Caring for Patients at the End of Life: Educating, Supporting Innovating (S3), Special Seminar Fundamentals of Palliative Care Nursing (A02/B02/C02), Special Seminar Monitoring Performance in Pallative Care (D01/E01), as well as for sessions F02 and G02. Headsets can be picked up outside Room 517; you will be asked to leave a credit card or passport as a deposit. Please remember to return your headset at the end of the day. This symbol indicates that there will be simultaneous interpretation for that session. means the language of presentation is English with interpretation into French. means the language of presentation is French with interpretation into English. For all other sessions, the title and description are in the language of presentation. Audio Recordings Most sessions will be recorded on CD and available for purchase approximately 20 minutes after a session has ended at the Swordfish table in the Foyer West. For quick reference, daily programme grids showing sessions, times and locations of key Congress activities can be found on pages Continuing Education Credits (CE) Physicians: We have requested CME study credits from McGill University, Office for Continuing Health Professional Education which sponsors continuing medical education for physicians. The Office for CHPE McGill University is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Education (CACME), and through a reciprocal agreement with the CACMS may award AMA PRA credits in the United States. For details, please visit the CE Desk near the registration area or consult the Web site IMPORTANT: Daily sign-in registration at the CE Desk is required in order to receive CME attestation certificates. You are responsible to collect your attestation certificate on your last day at the Congress. Nurses: While this educational activity is not officially endorsed by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), nurses may claim it as a continuous learning (CL) activity toward renewal of the CNA certification credential if it is related to their nursing specialty. Pre-authorization from the CNA Certification Program is not required. Participants are encouraged to retain a confirmation of attendance. Abstracts Abstracts of submitted workshops, proffered papers, research papers and posters are published in the online Congress Book of Abstracts. Congress Evaluation An Overall Congress evaluation form is located in your participant bag. In addition, daily evaluation forms will be available in the meeting rooms. We encourage all participants to take the time to complete your evaluation forms as it is a requirement of a CME-accredited event. It also helps the Congress Planning Committee to continually improve the event and respond to your suggestions. 9 Congress Information continued Activities Taking Place in the Exhibit Hall The following activities take place in the Exhibit Hall: Exhibits Twenty-seven exhibitors from Canada, the USA and overseas await you to demonstrate products and services geared specifically to helping those who work in Palliative Care. A Directory of Exhibitors can be found on pages of this programme. Posters Close to 300 posters covering all aspects of Palliative Care and sorted by category are displayed during the Congress. Please refer to pages 67 to 84 for the list of posters. Poster presenters are included in the index on pages The Dedicated Poster Session with authors present will take place on Wednesday, September 10, from 17:00 to 18:30. The authors will be also present during breaks. Books on Palliative Care The Congress Bookstore features a comprehensive selection of books touching on all aspects of Palliative Care. In addition, several publishers have their own booths where their books are also available for sale. Book Signings All book signing sessions will take place in the Author s Corner. RETROSPECTIVE Celebrating 40 Years of Palliative Care at McGill To capture and celebrate the distance that palliative care has travelled since its early days in the mid 70s, a timeline of palliative care at McGill and internationally is on display. This 3-part display focuses on the development of palliative care at McGill; provides a geographically-organized overview of the development of palliative care world wide; and offers the beginnings of a wish list for the future of palliative care a list that you are encouraged to expand. Live Music Before Plenaries Arrive 30 minutes before each plenary to be inspired by the live music of these world class musicians: French cellist Claire Oppert, trained by masters in France and at Moscow s Tchaikovsky Conservatory, has won numerous international awards and performed with many orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to her concert performances, she teaches cello at the Conservatoire Claude Debussy de Saint Germain en Laye and is a music therapist in a hospital palliative care unit in Paris. (Opening Plenary and Plenary 2) Classical guitarist Davis Joachim has performed in more than 20 countries and with orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Film Screenings Wednesday, September 10 18:00 On ne mourra pas d'en parler (The Tightrope of Life) Room 516 DE A road movie for the soul, this documentary is the personal journey of the director who, since childhood, has had an ambiguous relationship with death. Now 59, Violette Daneau explores mortality through a series of encounters with people confronted by death either through their professional activities or their state of health. Surprisingly, her quest puts her whole life into perspective. Filmed in Quebec, Switzerland, Spain and the United States, The Tightrope of Life is a dynamic, courageous and sometimes troubling trek through the human cycle. Director: Violette Daneau Producer: Les productions du Rapide-Blanc Year of production: 2011 Length: 92 minutes, followed by discussion Presented in French Departures Room 516 AB Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Departures is a delightful journey into the heartland of Japan as well an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan s cultural heritage. Departures follows Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved. He decides to move back to his old hometown to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled Departures thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency, only to discover that the job is actually for a Nokanshi or encoffiner a funeral professional who performs the ceremonial rites to prepare the deceased for burial and entry into the next life. While others despise his job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of Nokanshi, acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he finally experiences the joy and wonder of living. Depuis le premier Congrès de 1976, nous avons vu les soins palliatifs évoluer, passant d une discipline naissante à un domaine doté d un solide effectif de chercheurs on le constate dans la qualité des présentations scientifiques données chaque année. Vous apprécierez certainement l accent mis sur l interdisciplinarité des soins. C est pour nous l occasion de discuter des tendances internationales les plus récentes en recherches, en pratiques et en politiques en matière de santé relatives aux soins palliatifs. Affiches Près de 300 communications par affiches touchant à une vaste gamme de sujets en soins palliatifs et triées par catégorie, sont affichées durant le Congrès. RÉTROSPECTIVE On célèbre 40 années de soins palliatifs à McGill Pour se souvenir du chemin parcouru depuis leurs premiers pas au milieu des années 1970, une expo chronologique sur les soins palliatifs à McGill et dans le monde a été montée pour le Congrès. Divisée en 3 parties, cette exposition présente le développement des soins palliatifs à McGill, un survol géographique de leur évolution dans le monde, et le début d une liste de souhaits pour l avenir qui n attend que vos propres voeux et souhaits! Filmé au Québec, en Suisse, en Espagne et aux États- Unis, On ne mourra pas d'en parler propose une rencontre dynamique, courageuse et déroutante, avec la courbe de notre humanité. Okuribito) nous entraîne dans un touchant voyage au cœur du Japon rural et porte un étonnant regard sur les rites parmi les plus sacrés du patrimoine culturel nippon. Departures, c est l histoire de Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), violoncelliste passionné dont l orchestre est dissout. De retour dans sa petite ville natale pour y chercher du travail et reprendre le fil de son existence, il répond à une offre d emploi intitulée «Aide aux départs», croyant qu il s agit d une agence de voyages. Mais il devient plutôt un nokanshi, embaumeur professionnel qui prépare les défunts pour leur enterrement ou leur crémation et leur départ vers l au-delà. Malgré les tabous qui entourent son emploi, Daigo en tire une certaine fierté et se met à perfectionner l art du nokanshi, faisant office de portier entre la vie et la mort, entre le défunt et sa famille. Bouleversant par moments, profond mais aussi tendrement drôle, le film est le récit d une initiation à la mort ainsi qu à la joie et à l émerveillement devant la vie.
