Ainsi, le récent hiatus concernant la température globale, les 15 dernières années ayant montré un réchauffement plus faible qu attendu, illustre parfaitement le rôle clef que peuvent jouer les grands modes de la variabilité climatique sur la tendance de réchauffement climatique, à l échelle globale, mais encore plus à l échelle régionale. Les observations instrumentales ne remontent qu au début de l ère industrielle (~1850), si bien que la compréhension de la variabilité décennale à pluri centennale nécessite le recours à des enregistrements du climat plus indirects, issus par exemple de l analyse de cernes d arbres ou de sédiments marins et lacustres. Le dernier millénaire constitue un cadre privilégié en ce sens. Cependant, la couverture spatiale de ces données reste faible, si bien que l utilisation d un modèle de climat associée à une méthode d assimilation de ces données représente une amélioration clef pour notre compréhension du climat. C est ce que propose de mettre en œuvre cette thèse. Le modèle utilisé sera IPSL CM5A LR, un modèle de circulation globale, qui n a jamais été utilisé pour une telle approche. La technique proposée s appuiera dans un premier temps sur une méthode simple de rappel vers la température de surface, telle que reconstruite récemment pour le dernier millénaire. Cette méthode a déjà été utilisée avec succès pour les 50 dernières années. Le défi sera ici de l appliquer pour des périodes de temps plus lointaines. Cette méthode d assimilation de données pourra également être appliquée à des périodes de changement rapide du climat, comme les événements de Heinrich, pour lesquels une compilation de données paléo sédimentaires sera constituée et utilisée pour rappeler le même modèle. Ceci donnera accès pour la première fois dans un modèle de cette complexité, aux variations de la circulation océanique de grande échelle, face à des événements de décharges massives d icebergs. Cette analyse, en faisant appel aux observations du passé, s inscrit dans une meilleure estimation des conséquences

2 climatiques liées à la fonte actuelle de la calotte groenlandaise et devrait permettre d en réduire l incertitude. Cette thèse se place à l interface entre modélisation et acquisition de données paléo climatiques et bénéficiera donc de la double compétence présente à EPOC et dans son équipe encadrante. 3 COLLABORATIONS SCIENTIFIQUES : Le modèle climatique utilisé est développé en région parisienne au sein l Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) avec lequel l encadrant possède de nombreuses collaborations, avec les laboratoires LSCE et LOCEAN notamment. Les développements techniques sur ce modèle seront minimes et bénéficieront du travail en cours au sein de l équipe prévision décennale de l IPSL dont l encadrant fait partie. L analyse des reconstructions existantes et la mise en place de nouvelle base de données se feront en collaboration avec des chercheurs d EPOC dont Xavier Crosta, Frédérique Eynaud, Thierry Corrège, tous trois spécialistes de différents indicateurs paléoclimatiques. FINANCEMENT : L étudiant aura à sa disposition un console informatique de bureau, ainsi qu un accès au supercalculateur du Très Grand Centre de Calcul du CEA (TGCC), un des plus puissants sur le territoire national, et mis à disposition des chercheurs en recherche climatique dans le cadre du projet national GENCI. Ce projet s appuiera sur de nombreux projets en cours auquel participe l encadrant, notamment en tant qu animateur de groupe de travail pour le projet ANR HAMOC, qui s intéresse à la variabilité de la circulation océanique au cours de l Holocène. Le projet ANR MORDICUS pourra également enrichir le travail et l expertise du doctorant.

Indeed, the recent hiatus concerning the global temperature over the last 15 years have shown a weaker heating than expected, illustrating perfectly the key role that can play the large scale modes of the climatic variability on global warming, at the global scale, and even more at the regional scale one. The instrumental observations go back up only at the beginning of the industrial era (~1850), so that the understanding of the decadal variability requires broader view, allowed by paleo climate records of the climate for example of the analysis of tree rings or marine and lake sediments. The last millennium constitutes a privileged period in this respect. However, the spatial cover of these data remains low, so that the use of a model of climate associated with a method of assimilation of these data represents a key improvement for our understanding of the climate. This is what is proposed within this PhD thesis. The climate model used will be IPSL CM5A LR, a model of general circulation model, which was never used for such an approach. The proposed technique will lean at first on a simple method of restoring towards the observed anomalous surface temperature, such as reconstructed recently for the last millennium. This method was already used successfully for the last 50 years. The challenge will be here to apply it for more distant periods of time. This method of data assimilation can also be applied to periods of fast change of the climate, as Heinrich events, for which a compilation of paleo data will be constituted and used to restore the same climate model but over the last glacial period. This will give access for the first time in a model of this complexity, to the variations of large scale the oceanic circulation in response to massive iceberg discharges. This analysis, by relying on past observations, will help to better estimate the potential impact of coming climate and response to Greenland ice sheet melting. This PhD thesis will takes place at the interface between modelling and paleo climatic data and will thus benefit from the double expertise present at EPOC laboratory. The very innovative aspect of the thesis will strongly help the successful applicant to make a career in the research are

Climate Dynamics 41, pp , DOI: /s SCIENTIFIC PARTNERS : The climate model used is developed in Paris at the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) with which the supervisor has many collaborations with laboratories and technical LSCE LOCEAN notably. The development on this model will be minimal and benefit from the work of the IPSL team decadal prediction. The analysis of existing reconstructions and development of new database will be done in collaboration with researchers from EPOC including Xavier Crosta Frédérique Eynaud, Thierry Correge, three recognised experts from different paleoclimatic indicators.

6 FUNDING : The successful candidate will have at his computer, as well as an access to the supercomputer of (TGCC), one of the most powerful on the territory national, whose access is allowed to the researchers in climate within the framework of the national project GENCI. The PhD thesis will lean on of numerous current project in which participates the supervisor, in particular for the ANR project HAMOC where he is a workpackage leader. This project is about the variability of the oceanic circulation during the Holocene and as therefore clear link with the present thesis.
