Niveaux de langue Le Cadre Européen Commun de Référence pour les Langues (CECRL) distingue trois niveaux généraux de langues et s articule autour de cinq compétences (orales et écrites) : A1-A2 Utilisateur élémentaire B1-B2 Utilisateur indépendant C1-C2 Utilisateur expérimenté Structure de l offre Pour suivre des cours d anglais pour non-spécialistes à la faculté des langues et cultures étrangères, vous avez deux possibilités : les cours offerts par le CRAL et les cours offerts par le département d études anglaises et nord-américaines CRAL (Centre de Ressources et d Apprentissage des Langues). Patio, bâtiment 5, étage 2 Les formations au CRAL couvrent tous les niveaux : de Initiation pour grands débutants (A0) jusqu à C1/C2. En Initiation (A0) : un cours de deux heures hebdomadaires à partir d un manuel et d activités d accompagnement en ligne sur la plateforme Moodle. Pour les niveaux C1 /C2 : cours à partir de projets ou de thèmes proposés par les enseignants et les étudiants. De Initiation à C2 : toutes nos formations sont axées sur une pratique communicative de la langue et un entraînement aux activités langagières écrites et orales, en petits groupes, avec une alternance entre travail en autonomie et en présentiel. La formation, progressive, repose sur : 1

3 des parcours d apprentissage conçus par niveau de langue autour de thèmes de société et d actualité culturelle deux temps distincts de travail : 1 heure d autonomie en salle multimédia accompagnée par des moniteurs + 1 heure de présentiel en atelier de production avec l enseignant = 24 heures de formation par semestre une évaluation en contrôle intégral (ECI) de la production et de la compréhension tout au long du semestre une possibilité de certification CLES1 et CLES2 pour les étudiants des niveaux B1 et B2 Département d études anglaises et nord-américaines. Patio, bâtiment 4, étage 2 Le département d anglais accueille les étudiants avec un niveau B1 minimum en 1 e année, B2 en 2 e année, B2/C1 en 3 e année. Ce sont des enseignements thématiques en présentiel. L acquisition de compétences linguistiques est axée autour de savoirs littéraires, linguistiques ou civilisationnistes, de l analyse de documents (écrits, iconographiques, filmiques et audiovisuels) et de la rédaction de textes argumentés. POTRIQT This series of six lectures will introduce students to the first two centuries of American history. From the settlement of Jamestown (1607) to the period following the Civil War known as the Reconstruction (1877), America experienced a continuous transformation. Combining chronological and thematic approaches, this introductory course will cover key topics such as British colonization, the origins of the American Revolution or the march toward the Civil War. POTRIQT : One Man, Three Revolutions : Thomas Paine This series of six lectures is designed to enable students to master basic political concepts and understand key historical episodes: the Glorious Revolution of England (1688), the American Revolution ( ) and the French Revolution ( ). These events will be studied through the writings of Thomas Paine, a citizen of the world with a sharp eye and a funny prose. Required reading: To be announced. 8

CHARDIN, Mme IBATA, Mme COLLOMBIER, Mme MOGHADDASSI Programme : A Chronological Perspective on the Making of the English-Speaking World This series of 6 lectures will focus on the main historical, scientific and cultural events of the English-speaking world from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century in a chronological and spatial perspective: we will look at the cultural and political making of the United Kingdom (from four distinct nations), major exploration ventures (to America, Asia and the Pacific)which led to the British Empire, as well as the early links between the British Isles and what became the United States of America. 9

11 L3 2 ème Au titre de l 4 année 3 ème semestre LV2BCX31 (3ECTS) : Anglais pour non-spécialistes, 1 groupe au choix (Niveau de langue minimum conseillé: B2) LV2BCME1-Civilisation américaine et cinéma : African-Americans and America through Art and Film Groupe 1 : Lundi 10h 12h, Mme CRESSMAN, A.24 (Escarpe) This course will explore the relationship of African-Africans with America by looking at fundamental issues such as race, equality, freedom, hierarchies of power and gender through the study of Black painting, quilting, film-making and poetry. Some of the topics highlighted will include: Slavery and slave narratives; the Civil War and Reconstruction; segregation in the South; the Harlem Renaissance, Black Power and the civil rights movement, Hip hop and the search for black authenticity. In-class, students will be given the opportunity to improve their oral and written comprehension and expression skills. Weekly homework may be required. Final evaluation will be based on image/film analysis, written and oral comprehension, as well as skills in written English. BERRY, s.3220 (Patio) From a big-eared baby elephant striving to be accepted by his peers to a down-on-his-luck boxer from Philadelphia, the figure of the underdog struggling to reach the top has been stirring American moviegoers since the beginning of cinema. This course will offer students the opportunity to analyze and discuss the myth of the American underdog and his/her success story through a study of its representations in American culture at large, but more specifically in Hollywood films. KEANE s.5ss01 (Patio) Through the analysis of documents of various types (extracts of novels, artworks, essays, historical documents), this course will explore the evolution of the status of women in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. It will invite you to question the ideology of separate male and female spheres (which emerged in the wake of the Industrial Revolution but had been extant in Western thought for centuries) by examining key topics such as women's rights and limitations, work and education, literary achievements, or firstwave feminism. LV2CEME2 - Linguistique et cinéma: The Language of Humour Groupe 2 : mardi 16h 18h, Mme NIMTZ, M. KEANE, Amphi 4 (Patio) Laughter is unique to Man, but is there such a thing as a universal definition of humour? Can we laugh about anything? Would our great grandchildren laugh at the same things we do? Does humorous mean the same thing to every English speaker? We will be exploring the concept of humour, and more specifically what Anglophone cultures of the present and the past consider to be funny through the analysis of texts, images and videos. The aim of this course is not only to understand the mechanisms of humorous works but also to unveil the factors involved in the success or failure of such works in the eyes of the audience. 14 LV2CEME4 - Culture américaine et cinéma : American Embodiments of Desire, from Written Page to Screen Groupe 4 : Mercredi 8h 10h, Mme DELAGE-TORIEL, s. 18 (Portique) This course will focus on two mid-twentieth century literary masterpieces and their screen adaptations: A Streetcar Named Desire, a play by Tennessee Williams, adapted by Elia Kazan, and Lolita, a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, adapted by Stanley Kubrick and more recently by Adrian Lyne. Drawing from Peter Brooks's notion that the desire to know the body is a powerful dynamic of storytelling in all its forms, we will investigate the ways in which the body, both as subject and object of desire, may 'move' narratives and their readers/spectators across different media, be it through the written word, on stage or on a screen. Related themes, such as intimacy and transgression, will clue us to the interactions between these works and the cultural contexts in which they were produced. Book editions that will be used: The Annotated Lolita (Penguin Classics, 2000) A Streetcar Named Desire (Penguin Modern Classics, 2009) Au titre de l 6 LV20EM80 (3ECTS) : British Fiction & Illustration, 18th-19th centuries Jeudi de 12h à 14h, Amphi 3 (Le Bel), Mme BANDRY This course will give you the opportunity to explore the interaction between text and image through examples from major British fiction published and illustrated in the 18 th and the 19 th centuries: Swift, Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Sterne, Smollett, Austen, Dickens, Carroll It will give you both an overview of British fiction and skills in image analysis. Extracts from the novels and illustrations will be made available before class and you will be invited to add to the corpus of images. 15 L6 3 ème année 6 ème semestre Au titre de l 4 LV2CFX31 (3ECTS) : Anglais pour non-spécialistes, 1 groupe au choix (Niveau de langue minimum conseillé: B2/C1) LV2CFME1 - Littérature et cinéma : Robin Hood, a popular hero from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century Groupe 1 : Lundi 11h 13h, Mme MOGHADDASSI, Mme HILGEMEIER s (Patio) This course will focus on the figure of Robin Hood, from the moment of its apparition in medieval texts to its most recent embodiments on screen. Students will be asked to analyse texts and images or sequences from different movies. LV2CFME2 -Civilisation américaine : American portraits Groupe 2 : Mardi 8h - 10h, Mme CRESSMAN, M. KEANE, s.5ss01 (Patio) This course will focus on the description and the analysis of American portraits. We will explore various periods in American history and various techniques (painting, silhouette cutting, photography, graffiti art) with a special emphasis on the art of self-portraiture as a genre and the question of representation. Students having already followed a course on Portrayals of American Youths in their first year are welcome. In-class, students will be given the opportunity to improve their oral and written comprehension and expression skills. 16 LV2CFME4 -Civilisation américaine et cinéma : Vampires vs. Zombies: American Monsters Groupe 4 : vendredi 16h 18h, Mme GRASSY, s.5139 (Patio) Dreams and beasts are two keys by which we are to find out the secrets of our nature. --Ralph Waldo Emerson The recent revivals in all things vampire and zombie have elicited a number of explanations, from the economic to the psychological. This American Studies course examines the history of these two monstrous figures, their diverse representations in popular culture, and the numerous parodies and rewritings they have elicited. We will see how vampires and zombies have become social phenomena, and what explanations for the vampire and zombie crazes have been given in recent years. In preparation for this class, you are encouraged to explore the canon of vampiric and zombie studies and watch and read as many works you can get your hands on as possible. LV20GM83 (3ECTS) : (1 er semestre) Key Moments in American Art Mercredi 13h - 14h, Mme MANOLESCU, s.3204 (Patio) This class offers a survey of the main trends and artists in American art. We will focus mainly on 20th century art, but also examine briefly 19th century landscape painting, visions of the West and historical portraits. Special attention will be paid to the widespread use of video and the making of artist films. Theoretical texts will be provided in class.
