Dogs that have already been taught the basic commands as puppies are in an ideal position since they probably have had less opportunity to develop unwanted habits. These dogs are now in a position where you can develop their behaviour and training abilities to more advanced stages. On the other hand, many people take on older dogs from a rescue shelter or from owners who cannot look after them. These dogs have often missed out on early puppy training. Thankfully, reward based training techniques are suitable for all dogs, no matter what age they are at. Although young puppies will quickly learn the techniques, all dogs can progress when they are enjoying their training. It is important to set aside time to train your dog since this commitment will show in the progress that you make. Owning a dog can be challenging at times. Adolescent dogs can appear to forget the training they have been given as puppies. This is due to the effects of hormones and their new interest in social interactions outside the pack. By continuing to follow your reward based training programme, making sure that your dog is rewarded for all good behaviour, your cheeky adolescent dog will improve as he grows up. Taking on an adult dog with limited previous training can test your abilities, but the satisfaction from your achievements and from building a good relationship with your dog is worthwhile. 4 and fair techniques whilst attempting to resolve the problem. A dog that is confused or untrained will often be viewed as naughty and a common human reaction to this is to try to punish him. Punishment is problematic for many reasons since it can be hard to judge the correct timing and to know what an appropriate level of punishment is. Inappropriate punishment can lead to your dog learning to be afraid of you, or of events that coincided with the time of the punishment. This can lead to fear based behaviours which will actually inhibit your dog s ability to learn. This of course makes it harder to achieve your goals. It is important to use training methods which do not frighten your dog or cause pain or discomfort. Ultimately you want to avoid techniques which have the potential to damage his confidence in you. Successful training should be about building a good relationship with your dog and not about scaring him into compliance. By using the Mikki Basic Command Kit both you and your dog should have fun training and discovering new achievements together. Getting Started The Basic Command Kit provides you with tools so you can begin training your dog at the first possible opportunity. Reward based training methods are easy to fit into your daily routine and will help to build up your dog s confidence, even if he is new to your home. The key to good training is to reward the behaviours you would like to encourage and to try to prevent the behaviours you dislike. The Mikki Basic Command Kit provides you with tools to achieve this. If your dog is not used to training then you will have to begin with very short sessions, perhaps just two to three minutes each. This will allow him to discover the enjoyment of training whilst preventing him from becoming confused, bored or frustrated. As he becomes more confident with the training techniques you will be able to train for longer. It is often more realistic to fit in several short training sessions each day than to try to commit to a long lesson which is harder to arrange around work, children or other pets. It is best to begin training in an area where your dog is comfortable and where there are few distractions. 5 reliable in his training abilities you could begin to involve your children in your basic training sessions). This allows your dog the best chance of succeeding. If your dog seems hard to distract then you will have to think carefully about what it is that could be making the situation difficult for him. Perhaps he needs to go for a toilet break or he might benefit from being taken out on a walk before training begins so that he can use up excess energy. This is particularly the case with dogs that have spent a lot of time in a kennel environment. If your dog is lacking in enthusiasm or appears subdued it may be a good idea to visit your vet to ensure he is fit and healthy. Mikki Treat Pouch Using treats to reward your dog is much more practical if you use your Mikki Treat Pouch. This will keep your choice of treats together and easy to access whilst training your dog. It will also protect your clothing from smells or staining from the treats. Clip the pouch onto your waist belt when you are training your dog and when you take him out in the garden or on walks. This will mean that you always have rewards easily available when your dog does something you really like and want to encourage. The Mikki Treat Pouch can be worn when you take your dog out on walks or to dog training classes. Training Tips: A dog that is spoiled and offered treats or scraps without having to actually do anything first will be less inclined to try to earn the extra rewards you offer for training purposes. Maximise your training potential by using all treats just for rewarding good behaviour. 6 Choosing Appropriate Rewards The most common technique in training dogs is the use of edible rewards. This is because all healthy dogs have a desire to eat and food rewards are easy to handle and to link with good behaviour. It s important to choose an appropriate treat with which to reward your dog s behaviour. Different dogs will be motivated by different types of treat and so it is useful to take some time to try to discover what your dog loves the most. Some dogs are so keen on food that you can use normal dry kibble to reward good behaviour. However, most dogs will require some variation especially for harder tasks. A common mistake is to feed dogs human snacks. Sweets, chocolate and salted snacks can be toxic as well as causing dental problems. Do not feed these to your dog. There are numerous types of dog treat available in the shops and so there s a choice for everyone. Cooked meats are often an ideal choice since they are tasty, can be cut into suitable sizes and it will not contain colourings or other inappropriate additives. These are suitable for dogs that have more sensitive digestions. When introducing any new food type it is best to offer small amounts and wait to see if the dog has been able to digest it without problems. Many people believe that using treats during training will make your dog fat. This is not the case; general over-feeding and under exercising will lead to your dog becoming over-weight. Whilst you are using food rewards for training your dog it is sensible to reduce the overall amount of food that you offer him. However, if your dog has been particularly active during his time with you, it is likely that he has burned off the extra calories anyway. 7 Mikki House Line Your Mikki Basic Command Kit includes a house line which is a useful training tool. The house line is used to prevent your dog from behaving in ways which are undesirable. Uses for the house line will vary depending upon the behaviours you are trying to prevent or control. Possibilities include: Gain control with over exuberant dogs Limit undesirable behaviours such as stealing or jumping up Helps when teaching your dog to Come when called Helps you to guide your dog off furniture without the need for confrontation Allows you to reduce opportunity to chase smaller pets whilst you teach better manners Clip the house line to your dog s collar or harness. never attach it to a check chain or any collar that could be pulled tight on his neck. Doing so could cause your dog injury and discomfort. When using the house line indoors you should allow him to trail it behind him. If you spot your dog beginning to do something you dislike, control his movements by picking up the end of the house line and gently guide him away or step on the house line with your foot to prevent further movement. The house line provides you with an opportunity to control your dog s movements without having to chase or grab him. Therefore you can avoid situations where your dog could feel stressed and defensive. This is important with new dogs that are worried around people, or those which have already developed undesirable habits such as refusing to get off the sofa. When you have prevented your dog from behaving in an undesirable way he should then be encouraged to focus his attentions on a more appropriate activity. Reward him well for doing the correct behaviour. By limiting his opportunity to practise the unwanted activity, and by rewarding the correct behaviour, your dog will begin to choose the right option more often. 8 Training Tips: When your dog is wearing the house line you should avoid leaving him unsupervised. If he is left alone there is a chance that he could become tangled up and could hurt himself. Encourage your dog to play with his toys, chew on a treat or interact with you whilst he is wearing his house line or he may be tempted to chew it. It is very important that you never allow children to pull your dog about with the house line. Doing so could cause your dog to feel worried and this could lead to problem behaviours. Playing Given the chance all dogs would like to play games or some sort or another. Puppies that have been given the opportunity to play with various toys as they grow up will have the best repertoire of play activities. For other dogs that have not been able to practise their play skills, teaching them to play may require time and patience. why Play? Play is a great way for your dog to burn off extra energy, be entertained, have fun with you or by himself, and relieve frustration or boredom. You could begin using the clicker to encourage some basic training commands first. You can then use the clicker to encourage your dog to show interest in the toy. 8 Training Tip: Some adult dogs will have limited experience of play and won t immediately understand that you are trying to play with them. 9 Introducing the Ragger toy should be done in very short sessions whereby you praise and reward any indication of interest in the toy. For example, your dog may just sniff at the toy at first. Build his interest by clicking and rewarding him. Gradually you can entice him to begin following the toy by holding it at ground level and wiggling it. Move it back and forth in small jerky movements to make it more exciting. Remember to click and reward him when he moves towards it or paws at the Ragger. Keep the sessions very short so your dog is keen for more next time and never get frustrated at his lack of understanding. Doing so will only put him off the game completely. Other most experienced dogs will know how to play already so have fun with your new Ragger. Remember to replace damaged toys to remove the risk of injury. Clicker Training Your pack contains the Mikki Clikka which can be hung from your neck on its lanyard, or slipped on your finger using the elastic finger-band, which makes the clicker easy to use whilst training. The clever design allows you to easily emit the click sound by pressing the red ball with your thumb or even by pressing it against the palm of your hand. what is a Clicker? A clicker is a small plastic device containing an internal metal tongue that emits a click sound when pressed. The dog is taught to associate the sound with the arrival of rewards which makes the clicker a useful way to mark good behaviour. So why do this? The key to fast and effective training results is having well-timed rewards. The faster the reward arrives after your dog has performed an action, the more likely it is that he will associate the reward with that specific action. If you wait too long, there is a high chance that when the reward finally arrives your dog will be doing a different action and so will find it difficult to make the right association. 9 Mikki Basic Command Instruction Booklet.indd 9 19/1/10 14:40:39

10 This is the reason why you have to be ready to reward your dog immediately when he behaves well. While it is possible to do this with verbal praise, a clicker allows you to do this in a way that stands out and evokes the desired responses. Clicker training has been used successfully for many years across a variety of different animal species. The introduction of clicker training provided a means to train more efficiently, even when at a distance from the animal. This led to faster results and more accuracy. The clicker allows you to mark the desirable behaviour as it occurs; which is clearly a highly effective method of training. Your dog experiences the click sound followed closely by an edible reward and so it learns to associate, or pair, the two events together. The clicker emits a clear click when you press the red ball. Once your dog has been tuned in to this sound, he will understand that it means that a reward is on the way. This then can be used to mark behaviours or actions you would like to encourage. The click is effective in many cases since it is novel and it is closely tied with the arrival of rewards. Praise should always be part of a good owner/dog relationship. However, most owners talk to their dogs a lot and different family members will use different tones of voices and so verbal praise can sometimes be less effective. Occasionally verbal praise is not appropriate in cases where the dog becomes over-excitable. Most of all, using a clicker is a positive training tool that encourages you to enjoy your training time. The exciting and fun thing about clicker training is that you can encourage your dog to think for himself. The click is a consistent sound and so your dog will quickly learn to associate it with the rewards that you offer. 11 Getting Started With Your Mikki Clikka It is often helpful to begin by tuning in your dog to the sound of the clicker so that you get a great response when you begin clicking for real. 1. Start by discretely holding the clicker in your hand and have your filled treat pouch clipped to your waistband or close by. 2. You can either offer a treat from your hand or toss a treat onto the floor next to your dog. In either case, as he takes it you should click (fig. 1). 3. Repeat this by offering, or tossing, several treats and making sure the click occurs at the moment your dog eats each one (fig. 2). 4. Your dog will gradually begin to pair the sound of the click with the treats. He will begin to anticipate the arrival of the reward when you click. (fig. 1) (fig. 2) Different dogs will take varied lengths of time to make the association between the click sound and the rewards. A good indication that your dog has made the association is when he begins to look for the reward when he hears the click. Once your dog understands that the click signals a reward, you can begin to use it to train new actions and to encourage good behaviour. When you are using the clicker to encourage a desirable behaviour you should click once and then reward your dog with a treat. 12 As he improves you can begin to expect more precise actions or longer periods of good behaviour before you click. The click should always lead to a reward but how much effort your dog has to go to before you click will vary. What can the clicker be used for? The clicker is an amazingly versatile training tool which can be used to encourage any behaviour you like. Like all rewards, the timing of the click is critical. Focus on clicking at the exact moment your dog behaves in the right way. 2. Never click to get your dog s attention. Doing this could encourage your dog to do an action you dislike and you are likely to lose some of the clicker s effectiveness. 3. Be prepared to accept close approximations of more difficult actions and slowly encourage more precise attempts as your dog becomes more competent. 4. The clicker is not a toy and should only be used by adults or supervised children. Otherwise, your dog is likely to become confused by mis-timed clicks and probably encouraged to behave in the wrong way. 5. 13 Training Tip: If your dog is particularly sensitive to sounds you can gently introduce the clicker by muffling the noise within your pocket or sleeve. Spend time getting your dog used to the sound by exposing him to the muffled sound whilst he is playing with a favourite toy or eating a favourite meal. When he is completely comfortable with the noise you can begin to link the sound with the arrival of treats as normal problem behaviours. 13 Mikki Basic Command Instruction Booklet.indd 13 19/1/10 14:40:41

14 Teaching the Sit (fig. 1) (fig. 2) (fig. 3) Most dogs eventually learn how to sit although you may notice that many owners have to give the command word several times before their dog responds. By spending time training your dog you can achieve more accurate and reliable responses. 1. Prepare for training by filling the treat pouch with your dog s treats and making sure that you have the clicker to hand. 2. Begin in a quiet area where your dog is unlikely to be distracted by noises, people or other pets. 3. Get your dog s attention by saying his name and encourage him to approach you. 4. Hold a treat close to your dog s nose and allow him to sniff it. Don t release the treat yet (fig. 1). 5. While holding the treat to his nose, very slowly raise it upward and back over his head so that he lifts his nose to follow it. As his head rises your dog should naturally lower his bottom (fig. 2). 6. The moment your dog s bottom touches the floor you should click and give him the treat (fig. 3). 7. By rewarding your dog each time he gets into the sit position he will quickly learn to like this action, making it more likely that he will sit the next time. 14 Mikki Basic Command Instruction Booklet.indd 14 19/1/10 14:40:42

15 (fig. 4) (fig. 5) 8. Practise the sit a few times, making sure that you click at the appropriate time and reward. You should find that your dog begins to sit more quickly as you practice. 9. Once your dog is going into the sit position reliably you can start to add in your verbal command, Sit. Initially you should say it just as he is going into position. This will ensure he links the word and the action together. Once he has made a strong association you will be able to ask him to Sit and expect him to respond quickly (fig. 4). 10. Practise asking your dog to sit in different places, such as on either side of you, at a distance from you, in varied locations and on different floor surfaces. Click and reward successful responses. See how fast you can get him to respond to both your hand signals and your verbal command (fig. 5). Prolong the sit by pausing before you click and reward. Slowly build up the time he will sit before being released. Training Tip: Your hand movement will also begin to signal to your dog that you want him to sit. Hand signals are extremely useful in dog training so it is worth practicing these. They clarify your commands while allowing you to signal to your dog without saying a word. 16 The Down (fig. 1) (fig. 2) Being able to ask your dog to lie down is a very useful command to teach for many reasons. It helps to instil better control, encourages your dog to calm down, helps to speed up your dog s ability to settle well, as well as leading to many other games and commands involving the down position. It is easy to get your dog to follow this command successfully without having to resort to pushing or pulling your dog at all. A little patience and several short training sessions will teach your dog to lie down easily. 1. Start with your dog in a sit position. Hold your treat to his nose to allow him to sniff it but don t release it yet. 2. Slowly lower your hand straight downwards to that your dog lowers his head to continue sniffing at the treat (fig. 1). Bending over is not very comfortable for a dog so he will naturally slip into a laying down position in order to get to treat more easily. 3. As soon as his body is flat on the floor you should click and give the treat. Praise him too (fig. 2). 4. 17 (fig. 3) (fig. 4) 5. When your dog can down easily you can add in your verbal command. The word that you choose does not really matter. Some people like the word Down while others use Flat. Choose a word that you will remember and that everyone in your family will use for the same action. 6. Once your lure is working to get your dog into a down position you will want to begin to straighten up into a more natural standing position yourself. Gradually begin the command in a more and more upright position; at first exaggerating your hand gesture towards the floor. Be quick to click and reward him for getting it right (fig. 3). 7. As your dog improves his responses you will also be able to reduce the hand signal down to a downwards point, which is more natural. 8. Prolong the down by pausing briefly before clicking and rewarding. Very gradually increase the time he has to lie down before the reward comes. You can click and reward several times during a long down stay (fig. 4). 9. 18 Go To Bed It is very useful to be able to ask your dog to go to his bed and settle quietly. The most common way to do this is to wait until the dog is doing something wrong before sternly telling him to go to his bed. This makes it likely that your dog won t like going to his bed as it is always ordered in a negative way. Take some time to teach your dog to Go To Bed as a game so he enjoys it and is likely to rush there when you ask. It is easiest if you have already taught your dog to lie down before you begin. 1. Prepare your dog s bed so that it is in a place that he can easily get to. 2. Fetch your treat pouch and clicker before you begin. 3. Begin training during quiet times when there is little distraction around. 4. Begin a short distance away from the bed. Call your dog to get his attention then show him a treat in your hand. Toss the treat into the dog bed (fig. 1). 5. Your dog will follow the treat onto the bed. As he climbs into his bed you should click and toss in another reward (fig. 2). 6. Repeat until your dog is dashing to the bed to earn the click. 19 (fig. 3) Training Tip: Your treat pouch is extremely useful for this activity. It allows you to get to your rewards quickly while allowing you to have an extra hand on the lead, or even to hold a toy. 7. It is time to introduce the Down command. When your dog is standing on his bed waiting for the click, ask him to Down. As soon as he does, click and reward (fig. 3). If he hesitates or is confused, help by luring him into position as you did when you taught the Down. Practise until he is automatically lying down when he gets onto his bed. 8. You can introduce your verbal command Go To Bed now that his actions are reliable. 9. The hand gesture you were making by throwing the treat onto the bed can now become your gesture to send your dog to his bed. He will have associated this with the rewards so is likely to react quickly to the gesture. 10. Practise asking your dog to Go To Bed starting from different areas in the room. 20 The Leave (fig. 1) (fig. 2) The leave command is vital for all dogs as it is a signal for them to stop whatever they are doing. Many owners fail to teach this properly and then are faced with having to shout it at their dog when he picks up something he shouldn t have or begins to do something wrong. By teaching this command with rewards your dog s reaction will be more reliable and you can avoid startling your dog which could lead to defensive responses that make it harder to achieve a desirable response. 1. Prepare by arranging your treat pouch and clicker so they are easy to reach. 2. Entice your dog over to you by using the Ragger toy. Wiggle the toy on the floor to gain his interest (fig. 1). 3. When your dog tries to take the toy from you, or to grab hold of it, stop moving the toy and say Leave in a clear voice (fig. 2). 4. Be patient and wait for your dog to let go or to move away from the toy very slightly. When you first begin you may have to wait for your dog to realise that you are no longer playing. 21 (fig. 3) (fig. 4) 5. When he does leave the toy immediately click and reward (fig. 3). 6. Practise until your dog will leave the toy as soon as he is told. He should begin to come away further and be in better control of his urges to play. 7. If you find that your dog is not interested in the treat you offer because the toy is too much fun then you can use another toy as the reward instead. 8. You can also practice this command with food held inside your hand. Allow your dog to sniff and lick your hand but do not release the treats or click until he has responded to your leave command (fig. 4). 9. Practice this command until you can reliably ask your dog to leave any item; whether that be a dog toy, food or one of your own possessions. 10. Heureusement, les techniques de dressage fondées sur le principe de la récompense s adressent à tous les chiens, quel que soit leur âge. Alors que les chiots apprennent ces techniques rapidement, tous les chiens sont en fait capables de progresser dès lors qu ils prennent plaisir au dressage. Il est primordial de consacrer du temps au dressage de votre chien, c est un investissement qui se répercutera sur les progrès que vous réaliserez. Être le propriétaire d un chien est parfois une expérience qui relève du défi. Les chiens adolescents donnent parfois l impression d avoir oublié le dressage qui leur a été prodigué lorsqu ils étaient chiots. Cette phase correspond aux effets des changements hormonaux et de leurs nouveaux intérêts en termes d interaction en dehors du clan familial. En continuant à appliquer le programme de dressage fondé sur le principe de la récompense et en veillant à ce que votre chien soit récompensé pour tous ses comportements positifs, votre adolescent effronté pourra s améliorer en grandissant. 24 Même si le fait de travailler avec un chien adulte, qui manifeste déjà des problèmes de dressage, peut se révéler un processus très frustrant, il est essentiel de persévérer en faisant appel à des techniques agréables et justes tandis que vous essayez de résoudre le problème. Un chien qui a perdu ses repères ou qui n est pas dressé est souvent qualifié de «méchant» et la réaction typique des gens face à la difficulté est d essayer de le punir. Il est essentiel de choisir une friandise appropriée pour récompenser le comportement de votre chien. Chaque chien est motivé par différents types de nourriture, il est donc important de prendre le temps de découvrir ce que votre chien préfère. Certains chiens sont si gourmands qu il est possible d utiliser leurs croquettes habituelles pour récompenser leurs comportements positifs. Toutefois, la plupart des chiens vont exiger une certaine variété, notamment pour les tâches plus difficiles. Une erreur qui est commise fréquemment est de donner aux chiens des aliments qui ne leur sont pas destinés. L introduction du jouet en chiffon doit intervenir lors de séances très courtes au cours desquelles vous félicitez et récompensez votre chien dès qu il manifeste un intérêt pour le jouet. Votre chien peut, par exemple au début, juste se contenter de flairer le jouet. Développez son intérêt en cliquant et en le récompensant. Vous pouvez l inciter progressivement à suivre le jouet en tenant et en agitant ce dernier au niveau du sol. Effectuez de petits mouvements brusques d avant en arrière pour produire un effet plus stimulant. N oubliez pas de cliquer et de récompenser votre chien dès qu il s avance vers le jouet ou le touche de la patte. Le dressage avec le clicker est pratiqué depuis de nombreuses années avec une variété d espèces animales. L introduction de la technique du clicker a permis de développer une méthode de dressage plus efficace, même en se tenant à distance de l animal, avec des résultats plus rapides et plus précis. Le clicker vous permet de «marquer» le comportement positif au moment même où il a lieu, ce qui constitue sans aucun doute une méthode de dressage très efficace. Tandis que le chien apprend à identifier le clic suivi d une friandise, il apprend aussi à associer ou à relier les deux évènements. Le clicker émet un «clic» sonore sec lorsque vous appuyez sur le bouton rouge. Dès que votre chien est «réglé» au son du clicker, il comprend ce que cela implique, notamment qu il va recevoir une récompense. Cette méthode peut être utilisée pour «marquer» les comportements ou les actions que vous souhaitez renforcer. 31 Commencer à utiliser le «Mikki Clikka» Il convient dans un premier temps de «régler» votre chien au son du clicker afin d avoir une réaction optimale lorsque vous commencez à appliquer la méthode. 1. Commencez par tenir le clicker discrètement dans votre main et par fixer votre pochette remplie de friandises à votre ceinture ou la disposer tout près de vous. 2. Vous pouvez soit offrir une friandise à même la main, soit la jeter sur le sol auprès de votre chien. Dans tous les cas, vous devez cliquer au moment où il la saisit (fig. 1). 3. Renouvelez cette action en offrant ou jetant plusieurs friandises et en veillant à cliquer au moment même où votre chien mange chacune d entre elles (fig. 2). 4. Votre chien va progressivement commencer à associer le clic sonore avec les friandises. Il va commencer à anticiper l arrivée d une friandise dès que vous cliquez.
