6 ED MICHEL AURÉLIE TREGAN FILIPETTI PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL OF MARSEILLE EDITORIALS Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to welcome you to the 18th International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille. The festival team has been able to put together a challenging programme thanks to the confidence and the precious support accorded us by all of our partners including the City of Marseille, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d Azur Region, the Ministry of Culture and the Bouche-du-Rhône Department, without forgetting all our other public and private sector partners. By conforming to the most open and generous definition of the documentary film, this 18th festival is nonetheless subject to a pleasant modification. The competition selections this year will include fiction films. It is above all an opportunity to question the limits of the genre in a fruitful way (if indeed such films have a documentary air about them of course). At the heart of this project is the liberty of programming and the possibility of increased exchanges with the public. I am equally happy with the partnership put in place with Radio France Culture, who will be present for the highlights of the Festival. Not forgetting our long collaboration with Les Cahiers du Cinéma with whom we are offering a retrospective of the film director Pedro Costa. We are very happy to be back at the Criée National Theatre. I would also like to thank the other screening places that have been added for projections and meetings throughout the festival period including Les Variétés cinema, the Agora des Sciences, the CRDP and the BMVR of the Alcazar. The number of sessions has been significantly increased and this will allow the public more leisure to choose from the one hundred films on offer. As usual, there will be meetings with directors from around the world accompanied by their films and a combination of debates and convivial moments that weave that special festival atmosphere which is so particular to Marseille. 7 AURÉLIE FILIPETTI PRÉSIDENTE DU CONSEIL D ADMINISTRATION DU FESTIVAL ÉDITORIAUX ED Mesdames, Messieurs, Je suis heureuse de vous retrouver pour la 18 ème édition du Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille. Nous retrouvons notre lieu emblématique de la Criée, sur le Vieux Port, avec un grand plaisir. Grâce à l ensemble de nos partenaires, l équipe de professionnels du FID, menée par le délégué général Jean-Pierre Rehm, a établie une programmation de grande qualité, conforme à la définition la plus ouverte et la plus généreuse du documentaire. D ailleurs, dans la continuité de la fenêtre ouverte l an passé sur la fiction, nous vous présenterons cette année une sélection qui intègre des films de fiction. Ces films ont tous une dimension documentaire, ne serait-ce qu en arrière-plan. Mais surtout, ils permettent de nous interroger sur les limites des genres prédécoupés, prédéterminés. Cela nous donne plus de liberté dans la programmation, et des possibilités d échanges accrues avec le public. Je suis particulièrement heureuse également du partenariat de grande qualité que nous avons mis en place avec France Culture, qui nous accompagnera à plusieurs moments forts du Festival. Encore une fois, rencontres avec les cinéastes, débats après les films et moments conviviaux se mêleront pour tisser l ambiance si particulière du FID : je vous souhaite un bon festival! 8 ED MICHEL JEAN-CLAUDE TREGAN GAUDIN MAYOR OF MARSEILLE, PRESIDENT OF THE MARSEILLE PROVENCE URBAN DISTRICT, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE EDITORIALS The city of Marseille is happy to welcome the 18th International Documentary Film Festival (FID) from 4-9 July The FID Marseille has become a reference for a large number of film directors, professionals and critics and is one of two international festival competitions devoted to documentary cinema in France. It is an unmissable event that allows us to discover innovative productions and to reflect on the development of contemporary cinema. Once again this year, around thirty films will be presented officially while five parallel screens projecting retrospectives and themes will be the subject of roundtable discussions with film directors. Several places in the Phocean city are promoting this documentary branch of the cinematic arts including the Marseille National Theatre (La Criée), the Municipal Library (Alcazar), the cinema (Les Variétés) and the Regional Teaching Documentation Centre. Marseille has an experienced and professional approach to welcoming film productions. The Cinema Bureau was created in 1996 to help find locations, instigate relationships with local resources, provide logistical support and deliver authorisation for filming. The Belle de Mai multimedia centre and the National Audiovisual Institute (INA) are also guarantees of development in this sector. The Chateau de la Buzine is currently being restored and will become the Mediterranean Cinematography Centre in Marseille is at the heart of the Mediterranean basin and constitutes an endless source of inspiration which encourages creation. Its light, its countryside and its heritage sites are incontestable pluses but an even greater attraction for movie makers is its cosmopolitan and colourful population. Marseille is the second city for filming in France with more than 700 productions in the last 10 years. In 2006, out of the 26 films made here, 17 (14%) were documentaries. For six days in July the International Documentary Festival will reveal all the richness, multiplicity and diversity of world cinema. 008

9 JEAN-CLAUDE GAUDIN MAIRE DE MARSEILLE, PRÉSIDENT DE LA COMMUNAUTÉ URBAINE MARSEILLE PROVENCE MÉTROPOLE, VICE-PRÉSIDENT DU SÉNAT ÉDITORIAUX ED La Ville de Marseille est heureuse d accueillir la 18 ème édition du Festival International du Documentaire du 4 au 9 juillet Devenu une référence pour un grand nombre de réalisateurs, professionnels et critiques, le FIDMarseille est l un des deux festivals internationaux compétitifs dédiés au cinéma documentaire en France. Rendez-vous incontournable, il permet de découvrir des productions innovantes et de mener une réflexion sur l évolution du cinéma contemporain. Cette année encore, une trentaine de films seront présentés en sélection officielle et cinq écrans parallèles diffusant des rétrospectives et des thématiques feront l objet de tables rondes avec les réalisateurs. Plusieurs lieux de la cité phocéenne se mobilisent pour promouvoir cette branche documentaire du 7 ème art : le Théâtre National de Marseille - La Criée, la Bibliothèque Municipale Alcazar, le cinéma Les Variétés et le Centre Régional de Documentation Pédagogique. Marseille fait preuve d expérience et de professionnalisme en matière d accueil de productions. Créé en 1996, le Bureau du Cinéma a pour mission d aider aux prérepérages de sites, à la mise en relation avec les ressources locales, à l assistance logistique et à la délivrance d autorisations de tournage. Le pôle multimédia de la Belle de Mai et l Institut National de l Audiovisuel sont également des gages de développement dans ce secteur. Le Château de la Buzine est actuellement en travaux pour donner naissance à la Maison des Cinématographies de la Méditerranée en Au cœur du bassin Méditerranéen, Marseille, constitue une source d inspiration intarissable qui favorise la création. Sa lumière, ses paysages et son patrimoine sont des atouts incontestables mais plus encore, c est sa population, cosmopolite et de caractère, qui fait tout l attrait de notre ville pour les artistes cinéastes. Marseille est la seconde ville de tournage en France avec plus de 700 réalisations ces dix dernières années. En 2006, sur 126 tournages, 17 (soit 14 %) étaient des documentaires. Pendant 6 jours, le Festival International du Documentaire donnera à voir toute la richesse, la multiplicité et la diversité du cinéma mondial. 009

10 ED MICHEL MICHEL TREGAN VAUZELLE PRESIDENT OF THE PROVENCE-ALPES-CÔTE D AZUR REGION EDITORIALS The International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille is essential to our individual and collective perception of the environment. There is an increasing need to complete and go beyond the messages transmitted by the most accessible forms of audiovisual broadcasting. Thanks to its history and its constantly pertinent selections, the festival participates in the transmission of the notions of liberty, development, tolerance and sharing. These things are fundamental for the emancipation of each human being. The Provence-Alpes-Côte d Azur Region collaborates with numerous events devoted to audiovisual production and its cultural policy prioritises the largest possible public access to artistic practices, the discovery of new forms, diversity of approaches, the confrontation of different visions and sensibilities as well as the mixing of different types of public. The region follows pursues a resolutely voluntarist and ambitious policy by supporting or working with those districts, institutions, associations, artists and organisers who make our region more humane and more united. 010

De plus en plus, nous ressentons la nécessité de compléter, de dépasser les messages véhiculés par la diffusion audiovisuelle la plus accessible. Par son histoire et ses sélections toujours pertinentes, il participe à la transmission des notions de liberté, d épanouissement, de tolérance et de partage. Elles sont indissociables d un travail d émancipation nécessaire à tout être humain. 12 ED MICHEL CHRISTINE TREGANALBANEL MINISTER OF CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION, GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON EDITORIALS From 4 to 9 July 2007 the International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille is turning the Criée Theatre into a meeting place for professionals, film buffs and the curious. The festival offers a rich and varied programme to a wide audience of a genre that was for a long time little-known but for which today there is new interest. Now in its 18th year, the festival is opening its competition to fiction films for the first time, proving how much the documentary genre inspires and stimulates all cinematic creation. Be sure not to miss the retrospective of the work of the great Portuguese director Pedro Costa who has been given carte blanche by the festival for a programme in partnership with Les Cahiers du Cinéma... Other points of excellence in a remarkable programme include the selection Filmer, dit-elle (Film, she said) which explores female documentaries, the series Les Sentiers (The Paths) which seeks to return to childhood vision, but also, of course, the roundtables, the master classes and meetings about this essential genre which scrutinises, questions, shake ups and illuminates shadowy areas of our world. I would like to pay tribute to all the directors, artists and technicians whose works really take the pulse of our society. Thank you to the International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille for bringing them to light every year. I wish the team every success for this 18th festival and I wish all the spectators a very interesting time exploring this fascinating genre. 012

13 CHRISTINE ALBANEL MINISTRE DE LA CULTURE ET DE LA COMMUNICATION, PORTE-PAROLE DU GOUVERNEMENT ÉDITORIAUX ED Du 4 au 9 juillet 2007, le Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille fait du Théâtre de la Criée le point de rendez-vous des professionnels, des cinéphiles et des curieux. Autour de ce genre longtemps méconnu, qui suscite aujourd hui un nouvel engouement, il propose une programmation riche et diverse, destinée à un très vaste public. Pour cette 18 e édition, le Festival ouvre sa compétition à des films de fiction, prouvant combien le genre du documentaire inspire et stimule la création cinématographique dans son ensemble. Ne manquez pas la rétrospective de l œuvre du grand réalisateur portugais Pedro Costa, à qui le Festival offre carte blanche, pour une programmation en partenariat avec Les Cahiers du Cinéma. Autres points d excellence dans une programmation remarquable : la sélection «Filmer, dit-elle», qui explore le documentaire au féminin, la série «Les Sentiers», qui retrouve le regard de l enfance, mais aussi, bien sûr, les tables rondes, les masterclass et les rencontres autour de ce genre essentiel, qui scrute, questionne, bouscule, et éclaire les zones d ombre de notre monde. Je tiens à saluer tous les réalisateurs, les artistes et les techniciens, dont les œuvres prennent véritablement le pouls de nos sociétés. Merci au FIDMarseille, qui les met en lumière chaque année. 14 ED MICHEL VÉRONIQUE TREGANCAYLA DIRECTOR OF THE CNC (CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA CINÉMATOGRAPHIE) EDITORIALS The CNC shares with the Marseille International Documentary Film Festival a passion for documentary creation and one of its aims is to discover and promote creators. The CNC wishes, on the occasion of the 18th festival, to highlight projects supported by the Fund for Audiovisual Innovation set up at the end of In order to do this we the have joined up with a prestigious partner, Radio France Culture, who are equally moved by the love of reality that we aim to transmit. An important first will take place this year: the reading of a remarkable documentary project that will be broadcast live on the airwaves of France Culture. This project, Sabrina, was written by the director Marie Dumora and produced by the Quark Production company. It is supported by the Fund for Audiovisual Innovation which aims to encourage new and original writing. It supports authors and producers at that most crucial time in the creative process, namely writing and development, a stage which requires considerable investment in the case of an ambitious project. The project thus developed subsequently obtains an advance against takings. Thanks to the actors who agree to lend their talent and voice, a work may start coming to life. This first encounter with the listeners of France Culture will be followed in September by the reading of a fiction project at the La Rochelle TV Fiction Festival. I would particularly like to thank our partners, France Culture and the organisers of the Marseille Documentary Film Festival for offering a framework in which the documentary film is presented in its most natural and fulfilling context. 014

15 VÉRONIQUE CAYLA DIRECTRICE GÉNÉRALE DU CNC (CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA CINÉMATOGRAPHIE) ÉDITORIAUX ED Partageant avec le FID la passion du documentaire de création, le CNC, dont l une des missions est de découvrir et de promouvoir les créateurs, a souhaité à l occasion de cette 18 ème édition mettre en lumière les projets soutenus dans le cadre du Fonds d aide à l innovation audiovisuelle mis en place fin Pour ce faire, nous nous sommes associés à un partenaire prestigieux, France Culture, également habité par cet amour du réel que nous cherchons à transmettre. C est donc une grande première qui aura lieu cette année : la lecture publique d un projet de documentaire remarquable diffusé en direct sur les ondes de France Culture. Ce projet, Sabrina, écrit par la réalisatrice Marie Dumora et produit par la société Quark Production, a été soutenu par le Fonds d aide à l innovation audiovisuelle dont l objectif est d encourager des écritures nouvelles et originales. Il soutient les auteurs puis les producteurs à ce stade crucial du processus créatif, l écriture et le développement, étape qui nécessite dans le cas de projets ambitieux un investissement important. Le projet ainsi développé a ensuite obtenu l avance sur recettes. Grâce aux comédiens qui ont accepté de prêter leur talent et leur voix, une œuvre pourra ainsi commencer à prendre vie. Ce rendez-vous avec les auditeurs de France Culture est le premier qui sera suivi en septembre par une lecture de projets de fiction au Festival de la fiction TV de La Rochelle. Je tiens tout particulièrement à remercier ici nos partenaires, France Culture et les organisateurs du FID qui nous offrent ce cadre où le documentaire est dans son milieu le plus naturel et le plus épanouissant. 015

16 ED MICHEL JEAN-NOËL TREGAN GUÉRINI SENATOR, PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE EDITORIALS An essential component of the cinematic arts, cinéma verité, as represented by the documentary film, is today at the heart of the most accomplished broadcast forms in these times of multimedia and the proliferation of television channels. But it is on the big screen that testimonial and politically committed films are best seen. By supporting the International Documentary Film Festival (this year is the eighteenth), the General Council shows the importance it attaches to these works, their vision of reality, and their directors. It has just offered a place of expression and exchange to this star district for filmmaking that is appreciated by all those who have a passion for the cinema, those who already work in it and those who would like to be recognised by it. The General Council is resolutely committed to giving everybody access to quality culture and is happy to support an event that has truly created a niche for itself, becoming a major player in an audiovisual realm that is constantly changing. 17 JEAN-NOËL GUÉRINI SÉNATEUR, PRÉSIDENT DU CONSEIL GÉNÉRAL DES BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE ÉDITORIAUX ED Composante essentielle du 7 ème art, le film documentaire, ce cinéma vérité, est aujourd hui au cœur des formes de diffusions les plus achevées à l heure du multimédia et de la prolifération des chaînes télévisées. Mais c est sur le grand écran que ces films de témoignage et d engagement prennent toute leur valeur. En soutenant depuis ses débuts le Festival International du Documentaire, qui fête cette année sa 18 ème édition, le Conseil général marque l importance qu il accorde à ces œuvres, au regard qu ils portent sur le réel et aux réalisateurs et réalisatrices. À un département vedette pour le tournage des films, il vient offrir un lieu d expression et d échange apprécié de tous ceux que l œuvre cinématographique passionne, ceux qui y exercent leurs talents et ceux qui désirent y être reconnus. An indisputable showcase, it contributes to raising the profile of the genre in cinemas and on television. We are delighted by the prospect of what the latest festival has in store for us: a hundred films presented in both French and international sections with new forms of creation explored beyond the frontiers of genre and style. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to the diffusion of diverse types of documentary works and is therefore happy to renew its support for this event. For several years the Ministry has proposed documentaries from the festival selection to its French cultural network abroad and backs the international actions of the festival, notably within the framework of Documentary Month. I hope that the 2007 Festival, prepared by Jean-Pierre Rehm and his team, will have all the success that it deserves. 19 RICHARD BOIDIN DIRECTEUR DE L AUDIOVISUEL EXTÉRIEUR, MINISTÈRE DES AFFAIRES ETRANGÈRES ÉDITORIAUX ED Le FIDMarseille propose chaque année un panorama exigeant de la production internationale du cinéma documentaire. Vitrine incontestable, il contribue au rayonnement du genre dans les salles et à la télévision. Nous nous réjouissons par avance des découvertes que nous réserve cette nouvelle édition : une centaine de films présentés dans les différentes sections françaises et internationales, des nouvelles formes de création explorées au-delà des frontières du genre et du style. Le ministère des Affaires étrangères, attaché à la diffusion d œuvres documentaires diversifiées, est donc heureux de renouveler son soutien à cette manifestation. Le ministère propose également depuis plusieurs années des documentaires issus des sélections du FID à son réseau culturel français à l étranger, et accompagne les actions internationales du festival, notamment dans le cadre du Mois du documentaire. 20 ED MICHEL OLIVIER TREGAN MILLE PRESIDENT OF THE TELEVISION COMMISSION OF THE PROCIREP EDITORIALS The Marseille International Documentary Film Festival has established itself over the years as one of the most important events in Europe for discovering the best of documentary film-making from around the world. It encompasses all the diversity of this cinematic genre and allows an increasingly large public to encounter works (and film-makers) that are difficult to find on the usual channels that show documentaries. Once again, the Festival will present a large number of films that are unique and which do not necessarily follow conventional codes and styles. It is thus an opportunity to encounter surprising points of view, sensibilities and visions. The Television Commission of the PROCIREP supports the creation, the diversity and the circulation of these works. We are happy to support this important event that is considered to be one of the great international festivals. 020

21 OLIVIER MILLE PRÉSIDENT DE LA COMMISSION TÉLÉVISION DE LA PROCIREP ÉDITORIAUX ED Le Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille s est affirmé, au fil des années, comme une des rencontres essentielles en Europe pour découvrir le meilleur de la création documentaire, venue du monde entier. Il rend compte de toute la diversité de ce genre cinématographique et permet à un public, toujours plus nombreux, de rencontrer les œuvres et les auteurs qu il sera trop souvent difficile de retrouver sur les canaux habituels de diffusion du documentaire. Une nouvelle fois, il va offrir un grand nombre de films, souvent singuliers et bien éloignés des codes habituels et des styles convenus. Ce sera l occasion de découvrir des points de vue, des sensibilités, des regards, à chaque fois plus surprenants. La Commission Télévision de la PROCIREP soutient la création, la diversité, et la circulation des œuvres. Elle est heureuse de soutenir cette manifestation qui tient aujourd hui une place importante et reconnue parmi les grands festivals internationaux. 021

22 ED MICHEL BÉNÉDICTE TREGANCHEVALLIER DELEGATE FOR MÉCÈNES DU SUD EDITORIALS Mécènes du Sud (Southern Benefactors) includes about twenty businessmen aided by an artistic committee. Its purpose is to support contemporary creation in the greater Marseille region in several artistic fields including music, dance, theatre (and live performance in a wider sense), design and visual and audiovisual arts. In 2007, Mécènes du Sud is renewing its support for the Marseille International Documentary Film Festival that it considers to be a project of exemplary ambition that raises the profile of its territory and gives positive value to contemporary creation. The interest of those who decide on challenging artistic production projects which assume the complexity of contemporary problems rests on a dimension that is common to art and entrepreneurship, namely anticipation. Each festival requires flair and intuition on the part of its organisers to discover unconventional films that constantly question subject and format. The quality of this selection allows these films to be seen and programmed in festivals and cinemas around the world. This is how the Marseille International Documentary Film Festival works: it is a wellknown festival that attracts new films, art world celebrities, French and foreign professionals and the general public. And it works because of its firm conviction in the value of testimony that is apparent in its programming and in the places and occasions for exchange organised between the directors/authors and spectators. Documentary and in a wider sense film that is seen at the Marseille International Documentary Film Festival is not a formatted object either in terms of content or form. It is a signed testimony, offered up for debate and reflection, with an open content and a poetic way of questioning the world and is therefore an artistic object. Mécènes du Sud is a group that is actively involved in its city and sponsors this festival with which it feels a great affinity. En 2007, Mécènes du Sud renouvelle son soutien au FIDMarseille. Elle y reconnaît un projet exemplaire de ses ambitions : le rayonnement de son territoire et la mise en valeur de la création actuelle. L intérêt de décideurs pour la production de projets artistiques exigeants qui assument la complexité des problématiques contemporaines repose sur une dimension commune à l art et l entreprenariat : celle de l anticipation. Chaque édition du festival exige de ses organisateurs flair et intuition pour dénicher des films non consensuels qui questionnent sans relâche sujets et formats. La qualité de cette sélection permet à ces films d être repérés et reprogrammés dans des festivals et des salles du monde entier. Ainsi, le FID agit : festival de référence, il attire films inédits, personnalités du monde artistique, professionnels français et étrangers, grand public. Il réagit : défricheur, il dévoile nouvelles pratiques et jeunes talents. Et il agite : sa conviction affirmée de la valeur du témoignage se décline dans une programmation-manifeste et dans les espaces et les occasions d échange aménagés entre réalisateurs/auteurs et spectateurs. Le documentaire et plus largement le film vu par le FID n est un objet formaté ni sur le fond, ni sur la forme ; c est un témoignage signé, proposé au débat, à la réflexion, un contenu ouvert, une façon poétique de s interroger sur le monde, et donc un objet artistique.
