I look forward to seeing you in June. Along with its showers and flowers, spring brings thoughts of our Annual General Meeting. This year's AGM will take place on Sunday, June 11, with a miniconference on Saturday the 10th. I hope we will have a good turnout for these events, which will include the presentation of a much-needed update of our model translation contract prepared by copyright lawyer Marian Hebb. I would like to remind all members that if you have not yet paid your dues for the current year, it is more than time to do so. Dues represent a significant part of our operating budget, and we depend on them. You must also be a member in good standing to attend the AGM and, for regular members, to have the right to vote and to receive partial reimbursement of your travel costs from out of town. A few months ago, just when we thought we might have some quiet time, we found ourselves having to move the LTAC office and purchase a new computer. Concordia University, which generously provides us with the office, needed the space in the Bronfman building; in exchange, they gave us an office in the library building down the hill. This is in many ways a more convenient location, since it is just a block away from the metro station. When I stopped by the new office not long ago, Nicola had the new computer up and running and lots of boxes of books unpacked. I noticed, however, that our collection of books translated by our members is missing many recent titles; please, when your publisher sends you your copies of your translations, remember to send one to the association for our collection. Finally, I have some sad news... Joyce Marshall, writer, literary translator and honorary member of the LTAC, died recently at the age of 93. In our next issue, we will feature some reminiscences of this extraordinary woman by members who knew her. Phyllis Aronoff MOT DE LA PRÉSIDENTE Le printemps est là, et avec lui les averses, les fleurs et notre assemblée générale annuelle. Cette année, l AGA aura lieu le dimanche 11 juin; elle sera précédée, le samedi 10 juin, d une mini-conférence. Nous espérons vous voir nombreux à ces deux événements qui seront l occasion de présenter notre nouveau contrat type de traduction, dont la mise à jour très attendue a été faite par Marian Hebb, avocate spécialisée dans le domaine du droit d auteur. J aimerais également rappeler à tous les membres qu il est temps d acquitter votre cotisation pour l année en cours, si ce n est déjà fait. Les cotisations représentent une part importante de notre budget de fonctionnement, et nous en dépendons largement. Les membres doivent être en règle pour pouvoir participer à l AGA; par ailleurs les membres de plein droit doivent être à jour de leur cotisation pour voter et, pour ceux qui viennent de l extérieur de Montréal, pour recevoir le remboursement partiel de leurs frais de déplacement. Au cours des derniers mois, alors que nous pensions jouir d un certain calme, nous avons dû déménager les bureaux de l ATTLC et faire l achat d un nouvel ordinateur. L Université Concordia, qui héberge généreusement l association, avait besoin de récupérer le bureau situé dans l édifice Bronfman; en échange, l université nous a octroyé un bureau dans l immeuble de la bibliothèque, en bas de la côte. L emplacement est très pratique à de nombreux égards, puisqu il est situé à seulement une rue du métro. La dernière fois que je suis passée à ce local, il y a peu, Nicola avait reçu le nouvel ordinateur et rangé le contenu de nombreux cartons. J ai remarqué qu il manque de nombreux titres récents à notre collection d ouvrages traduits par des membres. Merci de penser, lorsque 1

2 l éditeur vous envoie des exemplaires de vos traductions, à en faire parvenir un à l association pour compléter cette collection. Il me faut terminer par de tristes nouvelles Joyce Marshall, auteure, traductrice littéraire et membre honoraire de l ATTLC, est morte récemment à l âge de 93 ans. Nous publierons dans notre prochain numéro quelques souvenirs que les membres qui l ont connue ont conservé de cette femme extraordinaire. Je vous souhaite à tous un agréable printemps. People from the US and Europe stumbled upon the invitation on the Internet. A number of people have become regular participants. Due to the continued enthusiasm surrounding this event, it seems to have become something of a tradition. This year, members of the public were invited to translate one of two poems into the language of their choice. These superb poems, both inspired by water and the mystery of life, were by Annie Molin Vasseur and Carolyn Zonailo. We received 51 translations in all, most in English & French, four in German, one in Romanian and one in Russian. We received translations from Europe (England, France & Austria), the US (California & Oregon) and across Canada (from Calgary to St. Andrews, NB). (See the LTAC Web site for translations.) Rachelle Renaud MOTS EN MOUVEMENT 2006 Pour la troisième année consécutive, cet événement a connu un franc succès. Des personnes vivant aux États-Unis et en Europe ont dit «tomber par hasard» sur l invitation sur Internet. Certains participants sont devenus des inconditionnels de l événement. En raison de l enthousiasme entourant cet événement annuel, Mots en mouvement, semble être devenu une sorte de tradition. Cette année, le public était invité à traduire vers la langue de son choix l un ou l autre de deux poèmes d Annie Molin Vasseur et de Carolyn Zonailo, poèmes inspirés de l eau et du mystère de la vie. Au total, nous avons reçu 51 traductions, la plupart vers l anglais et vers le français, ainsi que quatre traductions allemandes, une traduction roumaine et une traduction russe. Les participants de l édition 2006 provenaient d Europe (Angleterre, France et Autriche), des États- Unis (Californie et Oregon) et de partout au Canada (de Calgary à St. Andrews, N.-B.). Que demander de plus?» SPECIAL EVENTS PLANNING On June 10, 2006, the day before our Annual General Meeting, the Literary Translators Association of Canada will be holding a mini-conference for members and the general public. One of the sessions we re planning is on LTAC Special Events. As you know, LTAC is committed to organizing programs of interest to its members and to the general public in all regions across Canada, and appreciates the efforts of its members in attending meetings of organizing committees, bringing related events to the attention of regional VPs, suggesting activities and promoting the work of our members and the LTAC. On June 10, we ll talk about some of the activities we have planned, the ways you can participate in the planning, and your suggestions for our events. We hope you ll attend! 2

Parmi les activités prévues, mentionnons une séance portant sur l organisation des activités spéciales. Comme vous le savez, l ATTLC veut offrir à ses membres et au public une programmation intéressante et pertinente. Nous apprécions les efforts de nos membres dans toutes les régions du Canada qui participent à l organisation de ces programmes, en assistant aux réunions des comités régionaux, en informant les vice-présidents et les vice-présidentes de leur région des événements reliés à la traduction, en suggérant des activités qui les intéressent et en faisant la promotion des activités des membres et de l ATTLC dans leur région. ACCESS TO MEMBERS' CONTACT INFORMATION We occasionally receive requests for the LTAC membership list, including members' contact information. We also receive occasional requests from members not to give out their contact information, even to other members. Since we cannot always take individual preferences into account, we've tried to come up with a general policy that represents a reasonable compromise. In recent years, our policy has been not to distribute our mailing list to anyone outside the association, and to distribute it without contact information to any member requesting it. In addition, we are always willing to send out messages of general interest by from the office. 3

4 Members can, if they wish, have their contact information included in the Directory of Members on the LTAC Web site. When the association is approached by publishers or other people looking for translators, they are generally invited to consult the on-line directory. On rare occasions, the association will give out a member's contact information if the Public Lending Right Commission is looking for a member, for example, or if someone is seeking a translator who works in a rare language pair. If you do not want your contact information given out under any circumstances, please inform Nicola. Phyllis Aronoff, President ACCÈS AUX COORDONNÉES DES MEMBRES Il arrive qu on nous demande la liste des membres de l ATTLC, notamment les coordonnées des membres. Il arrive aussi que des membres nous demandent de ne pas transmettre leurs coordonnées, même à d autres membres. Puisque nous ne pouvons toujours prendre en considération les préférences individuelles, nous avons tenté d établir une politique générale représentant un compromis raisonnable. Notre politique au cours des dernières années a été de ne pas transmettre notre liste de membres à quiconque n est pas membre de l Association, et de la distribuer, sans les coordonnées, aux membres qui en font la demande. De plus, nous sommes toujours ouverts à envoyer des messages d intérêt général à partir du bureau. Les coordonnées des membres qui le désirent peuvent être incluses dans le répertoire des membres, sur le site Web de l ATTLC. Lorsque des éditeurs ou d autres personnes approchent l Association, à la recherche de traducteurs, ils sont habituellement invités à consulter le répertoire en ligne. Il peut arriver, en de rares occasions, que l Association remette les coordonnées d un membre, par exemple si la Commission du droit de prêt public recherche un membre ou si quelqu un recherche un traducteur pour une combinaison de langues rare. Phyllis Aronoff Traduit par Mario Leduc NEWS FROM THE WEST At Word on the Street in Calgary on September 24, 2006, LTAC again plans to share an exhibit table with ATIA, with volunteers from both associations giving out directories, brochures, and information and participating in a workshop for the public. Tra n sl it Volu m e 7, an anthology of literary translations, including contributions from LTAC members, is in production by the literary translation collective of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA), with support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and LTAC, scheduled for printing July Nésida Loyer participated in a round table on translation and writing as part of Francophone Week at the French Centre, University of Calgary, on March 22, 2006, with two Calgary writers, Laurent Chabin and Gisèle Villeneuve. Approximately 15 students and professors took advantage of the informal presentation to ask questions. Nésida emphasized the importance of belonging to a professional association whether for commercial or literary translators and provided LTAC bookmarks and brochures for distribution. Maureen Ranson, VP West RAPPORT DE L OUEST POUR TRANSMISSION À l occasion de la foire annuelle du livre et de magazines Word on the Street, qui se déroulera à Calgary le 24 septembre 2006, l ATTLC compte de nouveau partager une table d exposition avec l ATIA. Des bénévoles des deux associations seront présents pour distribuer les annuaires des membres et des brochures et répondre aux questions des visiteurs, et participeront à un atelier ouvert au public. L anthologie de traductions littéraires TransL it Vol um e 7, qui comprend des contributions de membres de l ATTLC, est en cours de production par le Collectif de traducteurs et traductrices littéraires de l'association des traducteurs et interprètes de l'alberta (ATIA), avec le soutien de la Fondation pour les arts de l Alberta et de l ATTLC. Une quinzaine d étudiants et de professeurs ont profité de l événement pour poser des questions dans une ambiance détendue. Nésida a souligné l importance pour les traducteurs qu ils soient traducteurs commerciaux ou traducteurs littéraires d appartenir à une association professionnelle, et fait distribuer des signets et des brochures de l ATTLC. David Edney is looking forward to attending some of the rehearsals of his translation of Molière's Don Juan at the Stratford Festival this summer. The production, directed by Lorraine Pintal, opens August 1 and runs until October. David is now putting the finishing touches on his critical edition of Molière s Les amants magnifiques (The Lavish Lovers) in English translation, which he hopes will be released some time in Nésida Loyer : Le 22 mars dernier, dans le cadre de la Semaine francophone, s est tenue au Centre français de l Université de Calgary une table ronde sur l écriture et la traduction, à laquelle j ai eu le plaisir de participer avec deux écrivains de Calgary, Laurent Chabin et Gisèle Villeneuve. J ai insisté sur l importance qu il y a à faire partie d une association professionnelle qu elle soit plus commerciale ou plus littéraire. Il me faudrait maintenant retourner au Centre pour vérifier si les signets et les brochures de l ATTLC que j avais apportés ont bien disparu Une de mes nouvelles a été publiée en décembre 2005 dans l anthologie de textes réunis sous le titre Alberta, village sans mur(s). Cet ouvrage s inscrivait dans les activités du centenaire de l Alberta et avait pour but de souligner la diversité des voix francophones dans la province. Tirée à 300 exemplaires, l anthologie va se retrouver dans toutes les bibliothèques des écoles francophones de l Alberta. Elle est disponible auprès des Presses Universitaires Saint-Boniface. Goldie Morgentaler s Yiddish to English translation, in collaboration with the author, of the second volume of Chava Rosenfarb's novel The Tree Of Life has recently been shortlisted for an Alberta Book Award. Chava Rosenfarb was the keynote speaker at the joint LTAC/ALTA conference in Montreal last November, and she will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the University of Lethbridge convocation ceremony on May 31, 2006, where she is giving an address to the graduates. Elisabet Ràfols-Sagués is coordinating a theatre translation project that includes the translation into English of two Catalan contemporary plays and their subsequent stage readings. Marta Marín-Dòmine, also a member of LTAC, will be translating, in collaboration with Colman Hogan, Victòria Szpunberg s L'aparador. The stage reading will take place in Toronto. Elisabet will translate, in collaboration with Susan Bond, pessetes by Manuel Veiga. Stage readings of pessetes will take 5

6 place in Toronto, Saskatoon and Regina in the fall of Élizabeth Robert : La première édition montréalaise du Festival international du livre mangeable a connu un véritable succès auprès des 340 festivaliers venus à l'institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec, le samedi 1 er avril 2006 pour admirer et déguster les chefs-d œuvre culinaires inspirés par des livres d'auteurs québécois et créés par 42 étudiants du cours de pâtisserie-chocolaterie, sous la direction du professeur Yves Petit. Le jury composé de Patrice Demers, Jean Fugère et Annouchka Gravel- Galouchko a accordé trois mentions, tandis que Gilles Duceppe a remis la coupe Brillat-Savarin à Sayaka Omori, pour sa représentation chocolatée de L appareil, livre de Charles Emmanuel Pariseau, publié aux éditions La Pastèque. Francine Allard a assuré la direction du festival 2006 produit par Danielle Shelton, pour Adage. Nigel Spencer has just finished subtitling the new DVD edition of Une Saison dans la vie d'emmanuel by Claude Weisz and Marie-Claire Blais and recently appeared in the documentary Marie-Claire Blais: au delà des apparences, which he is also subtitling. He recently participated in the Translation Slam at Blue Met, and the bilingual edition of Frissons d'enfances/haunted Childhood has just been published by XYZ. Mark Stout is translating the daily logs and text of the website for Mission Antarctica, a Canadian expedition to Antarctica to observe the effects of global warming. The 13-member crew of fiercely dedicated scientists and filmmakers will be spending the winter aboard the Sedna IV, a 51-metre, full-rigged, steel-hulled sailing vessel, now moored in Melchior Harbour on the Antarctic Peninsula. Soon, the ship will be iced in, and the crew will be quite literally trapped until the ice melts next spring. Luise von Flotow: Finally, after 7 years, The Third Shore, Women's Writing from East Central Europe (post 1989), published by Northwestern University Press, Evanston, IL, 2006) is out. Edited and partly translated by Luise von Flotow and Agata Schwartz, it includes work written after 1989 from all the countries and cultures of the former so-called East Bloc. The launch was held at the University of Ottawa on April 20, Luise is also currently working on a number of new translation projects: an excerpt from Antoine Berman's Pour une critique de traduction: John Donne (Gallimard 1995), a book exploring the possible ways of developing translation criticism along the lines of literary criticism, with reference to one poem by John Donne, translated many times, and in many different ways into French; the completion of Chantal Bouchard's La langue et le nombril. L'histoire d'une obsession québécoise, at the Centre de traduction littéraire in Arles, during the month of May 2006; and finally a series of German "agitprop" articles from the 1960s by Ulrike Meinhof for academic annotation by Karin Bauer (McGill University).
