1. Introduction Accumulators consists of two electrodes which are in an electrolyte; so an accumulator is a chemical element. Inside this element chemical processes are active. As these processes are reversible accumulators can be recharged. This accu charger is constructed to charge and discharge up to four nickel-cadmium and/or nickel-metal-hydride accumulators. The nickel-cadmium accumulators have a positive electrode made from nickelhydroxide and a negative electrode from metalic cadmium. The electrolyte consists of kaliumhydroxide. Nickel-metal-hydride accumulators have a positive nickel- electrode and a negative hydride accumulating electrode. The electrolyt is potash lye. To charge up an accumulator the so called charging voltage is necessary which is higher than the cell voltage. During charge more charge (mah) has to be added as you can take from it. This relation of added and taken charge is called efficiency. The discharging capacity which is strongly dependent on the discharging current is decisive for the condition of the accumulator. The voltage added cannot be used as criterion because a part of it is lost (e.g. is converted into heat). The capacity which is printed on the accumulator is the maximum charging capacity which an accumulator is able to give off. This means an accumulator with a capacity of 400 mah can theoretically give off e.g. for one hour a current of 400 ma (= 0,4 Ampere). These values depend strongly on many factors (such as condition of the accumulator, discharging current, temperature etc.). At charging units the name C- rate is used very often. The C- rate is the current value which is normally stated for charge and discharge. This current in Ampere corresponds to the nominal capacity in Amperehours; this means for an accumulator with 400 mah that 1C = 0.4 A. Note that the discharge capacity of an accumulator strongly depends on the discharge current: the lower the discharge current the greater the dischargeable capacity. At automatic mode the discharge current is adapted automatically to the condition of the accumulator. At manual mode discharge is C/3 at average. Respectable manufacturers state the capacity of an accumulator at C/3. That means e.g. that an accumulator with 1200 mah will reach this 1200 mah at a discharge current of 400 ma (= C/3). If a discharge current of C/10 (= 120 ma) is stated you can be sure that this accumulator doesn t reach 1200 mah at a discharge current of 400 ma. Because of this the accumulator stated with C/10 is not so good as the C/3 one. If accumulators are stored over a longer period of time they loose charge. This effect is called self- discharge. 2. Saftey Rules This charging unit in constructed in protection class II; it may only be connected to 230 V AC. With this charging unit it is only allowed to charge and discharge up to four nickelcadmium and nickel-metal-hydride accumulators of size mono (UM1/D), baby (UM2/C), mignon (UM3/AA), micro (UM4/AAA) and lady (UM5/N) at the same time. With this charger it isn t allowed to charge lithium- ionic accumulators! Do not charge batteries besides nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride. The VDE regulations are valid; especially DIN VDE 0700 part 29. The maximum voltage at the connection pins of the charging unit is 5.5 V (high resistance). Keep children away from power supplies and charging units! Pay attention to the rules for prevention of accidents in industrial enterprises prescribed by the Industrial Trade Associations for electrical installations and production facilities. When using the charging unit in schools and hobby- workshops the usage of power supplies and charging units has to be controlled by responsible teachers or skilled personell. If covers are opened or parts are removed, except it is possible manually, voltagecarrying components can lay open. Terminals can also carry voltage. If it is necessary to open the unit before adjustment, maintenance, repairing or exchange of parts or modules, the charging unit has to be separated from all voltage sources. Repairing or maintenance of the charging unit may only be executed by SKILLED PERONELL who know the dangers and the respective rules. Condensers in the unit can still carry voltage even if the unit has been separated from all voltage sources. Don t use the charging unit immediately after bringing it from a cold into a warm room. Condensed water might impair or destroy your unit. Give the charger time to warm up to room temperature without switching it on. When working with power supplies or charging units it is not allowed to carry metallic or conductive jewlery like necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. 4 5

It is not allowed to connect power supplies and charging units to persons or animals. When operating the unit pay attention to sufficient ventilation. Never cover the ventilating slots. Never place the unit on tableclothes or on carpets! Place the unit on a hard and flame resistant base. Make sure good ventilation of the unit is possible. Cooling of the unit is mainly achieved by two fans which are running during charge and discharge and at stand-by every 30 minits for a short time too. Attention: If any accumulator inserted is charged or discharged easy to recognize by the flowing current I both fans must run. Running fans are audible quite good. If these fans are not running switch off immediately and secure against unintentional use! Respectable manufacturers recommend an ambient temperature of 20 C when operating a charger. Avoid direct sunlight. Do not operate charging units without supervision. For work under voltage only approved tools may be used. If there are doubts whether a safe usage is still possible the charging unit has to be put out of operation and secured against unintentional use. It must be supposed that a safe usage is no longer possible - if the charging unit shows visible damage - if the station does not work - after longterm storage under unfavourable conditions - after transport stress. A damaged power cord may only be replaced by skilled peronell. Use the unit only in dry and closed rooms. The unit may only operate within an ambient temperature of 0 C to 40 C. Pay attention to right polarity when inserting accumulators. The unit is protected against short circuit. 3. Features This is a charging unit for nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride accumulators of size mono (UM1/D), baby (UM2/C), mignon (UM3/AA), micro (UM4/AAA) and lady (UM5/N). Up to four different accumulators can be charged at the same time. The accumulators may only be inserted into the unit. Without any settings batteries are charged with automatic mode. Charging is controlled by a microcomputer and charges up the accumulator to 100%. 100% means 115% of the stated capacity in case of new accumulators and below 100% of the stated capacity in case of older accumulators. It is possible that the discharge capacity don t reach 100%. However, this discharge value must be higher than 80%. If he is smaller the accumulator is faulty (test with ALIVE- program). No overcharging is possible, therefore the longest life for the accumulators can be reached. Predischarge is not necessary before charging. The accumulator is charged to the present possible 100%. Charge and discharge cycle is independent of the charging state and the temperature of the accumulator. The charge and discharge current is microcomputer controlled. At automatic mode the stated capacity is insignificant for this charging unit. Only at manual mode range of capacity has to be selected, which meets the accumulator. The charging unit has an automatic accumulator- control (charging voltage and charging quantity). This unit has an automatic fan control. The two fans are getting started at charge and discharge. At stand- by every 30 minits both fans are running for about 5 minits, too. The automatic accumulator identification immediately recognizes when an accumulator is connected or disconnected, even if the accumulator is fully discharged. At automatic mode a refresh program will be startet to rebuild these full discharged accumulators. Self- discharge of the accumulator is prevented by trickle charge. 6 7

No memory effect is possible (as charge and discharge currents are pulsed). A high internal resistance of the accumulator decreases and the current load capacity increases. The efficiency of the accumulator is increased (relation of necessary charging quantity and capacity which can be taken out). Only one function key is needed to choose settings and to show data of the accumulators. The calculated charging and discharging capacities of the connected accumulators are stored. These data can be recalled at any time and are stored until the accumulator is removed. The charging unit has a memory backup. During power failure data of accumulators and programs are stored up to 24 hours. If the charging unit regains power these programs continue. To guarantee this feature the unit has to be switched on for 2 hours. The liquid crystal display (alphanumerical LCD) is used to display all charging programs (charge, discharge, check, cycle, alive) all charging modes (AUTOMATIC / MANUAL) all actual voltages (U) all charge conditions of batteries (battery symbol) all actual currents of charge/discharge (I) all needed times in hours and minits (hh:mm) all actual/stored accumulator data in mah (C / D) Charging programs: - CHARGE = charging only one time - DISCHARGE = discharging only one time - CHECK = discharge and charge - CYCLE = charge- discharge- charge - ALIVE = charge- discharge- charge- discharge- charge The ALIVE program is to refresh new accumulators and those stored over a long period of time. Please be aware that accumulators which have been treated badly can take up only 30% of their capacity at the beginning. This bad efficiency can be recognized by a high charging capacity (C) and a very small discharging capacity (D). Charge those accumulators with the ALIVE program. After some cycles discharge capacity (D) increases. 8 Charging mode: AUTOMATIC (AUTO): current at charge and discharge is set automatically. Value of current is adapted automatically to the condition of the accumulator. MANUAL (MAN): charge and discharge current are set indirectly by the selected range of capacity. Voltages (U): Voltage of battery is measured when no current flows (therefore it can t be controlled during work). If no voltage is shown voltage was not measured until that time. Charge condition: To see at first sight approximate charge condition of a battery a symbol is displayed. This symbol is only to recognize progress of charging or discharging within a short time. At charge this symbol is filled from the buttom to the top and at discharge it is made empty from the top to the buttom. This is no sign how much time does it take until end of program. If condition of accumulator was not measured a symbol with a horizontal line is shown (at this instruction manual symbol is represented by the letter S ). Current of charge/discharge: At charge and discharge the running current I is displayed. Note that amperage is set automatically at automatic mode. If the current has not been measured at begin or after finishing program (READY/ERROR) no current flows and I= A will appear. Time: Complete time in hours and minits (hh:mm) of treating the accumulator is shown. Therefore at program Check, Cycle and Alive you see the whole added time of charging and discharging. Only time for Trickle won t be added. Charging time for accumulators up to 2000 mah reaches from 90 minits up to 4 hours at automatic mode and will take about 90 minits at manual mode. For accumulators with 6000 mah charge will take up to 8 hours at automatic mode and up to 4 hours at manual mode. The real charging times can differ as the accumulator defines it by himself. 9

So an accumulator loaded with 80% will take a long time until charging is finished because only a small trickle current will flow. If an accumulator reaches approx. 80% of his capacity a part of the charging current is transformed into heat. Thereby the accumulator can warm up. Discharge time is also very short. Discharging time for accumulators up to 2000 mah reaches from 1 hour up to 3 hours at automatic mode and will take 60 minits up to 150 minits at manual mode. For accumulators with 6000 mah discharge will take up to 10 hours at automatic mode and up to 8 hours at manual mode. The real discharging times can also differ as the accumulator defines it by himself. Note that accumulators with a small capacity (smaller than 200 mah) won t reach the stated capacity at discharge especially with automatic mode. Reason for this is the fact that the capacity which can be taken out strongly depends on the discharge current and nearly half of the capacity is discharged with a very high current. Accumulator data: Capacity charged into the accumulator (C) and discharged from the accumulator (D) is separately shown in mah. At program Cycle and Alive old data are cleared as soon as they are charged or discharged again. Capacity of Trickle won t be computed, added or shown. 4. Operation Remove all accumulators (if there are one inside), plug in the unit and switch it on. For about 2 seconds you will see: CHARGE MANAGER SELFTEST RUNNING During that time a selftest is running and the unit checks all four slots whether there are accumulators inserted or not. This is necessary for memory backup (saving all data during power failure). To charge up goldcap to maximum let the unit switched on for minimum of 2 hours. This goldcap makes data retention possible for 24 hours at power failure or if the unit is switched off. Of course the charger can be used during that time. Without any inserted accumulators appears: CHARGE MANAGER 1: - 3: - 2: - 4: - These strokes ( -) means that there is no accumulator in the slot. If there is no accumulator connected to the charging unit the function key has no meaning (nothing will happen when pressing it). Now insert an accumulator e.g. into slot 1. The charging unit recognizes the accumulator and starts up accumulator settings. First the charge mode has to be selected. You can choose between automatic mode (AUTO) and manual mode (MANUAL). At automatic mode value of current is adapted automatically to the condition of the accumulator. At manual mode charge and discharge current are set indirectly by the selected range of capacity. Note that time needed at charge and discharge are longer at automatic mode: ACCU- SETTINGS 1: SET AUTO/MAN > AUTOMATIC During blinking of the cursor you have 3 seconds of time to select the mode. Press the function key to change to manual mode: ACCU- SETTINGS 1: SET AUTO/MAN > MANUAL If you don t press the key (or press it two times) automatic mode is getting started. At manual mode the range of capacity has to be selected which is printed on the accumulator: ACCU- SETTINGS 1: SET CAPACITY > mah 10 11

You can choose one of the following ranges: > mah > mah > mah > mah > mah > mah > mah > mah Press the button so often until that range is shown which fits the accumulator. If the capacity printed onto the accumulator is exact at the border of two ranges (e.g mah) select the lower one (here range mah). Note that there is no guarantee for the charger (and for the accumulator, too) if you select the wrong one. In this case you will loose your guarantee! After selection of capacity range at manual mode or after selecting automatic mode charge program has to be adjusted. CHARGE is the standard program: 12 ACCU- SETTINGS 1: SET PROGRAM > CHARGE During blinking of the arrow (>) you have 3 seconds of time to select the charging program. Press the function key if you want to select a different one. If you don t press CHARGE- program is started automatically. You can choose between: - Charge - Discharge - Check - Cycle - Alive CHARGE is the standard setting and means the accumulator will be charged. DISCHARGE means the accumulator will be discharged only. CHECK means the accumulator will be first discharged and then charged. CYCLE means that the accumulator will be first charged, then discharged and finally charged again. ALIVE means that the accumulator will be charged, discharged and charged, and finally discharged and charged again. At every press of the function key to change the charging program you regain 3 seconds time. After these 3 seconds the setting is accepted and the selected program will start. Now select CYC (CYCLE) for this accumulator and wait 3 seconds until the program starts: CHARGE MANAGER 1:CYC S 3: - 2: - 4: - Both fans are getting started and the blinking battery- symbol (shown in this instruction manual with letter S ) indicates that this accumulator is treated. Now press the function key: there you can see all available data of those slots where accumulators are inserted: 1:CYC>C= 17.5mAh MAN D= 0.0mAh S U= 1.29V 00:01 I= 1.06A In this viewing in the first line the slot number (here slot 1), the charge program (here CYC for Cycle) and the charge capacity C is shown. The arrow (>) at C is blinking to show that the accumulator is charged (if the arrow is blinking at D the accumulator is discharged). In the second line MAN represents the manual mode (AUTO would appear at automatic mode) and discharge capacity D is viewed with mah. In the third line the battery symbol ( S ) shows the condition of the accumulator. The voltage U (in volts V) is displayed as soon as it was measured. At the last line time is shown in hours and minits (hh:mm) which has elapsed during that program and the charge current I (in amperes A) is shown if measured (or discharge current at discharging). If charging has finished discharge will be activated and the arrow will appear in the second line (to show that the accumulator is discharged at the moment): 1:CYC C= 1428mAh MAN >D= 1.4mAh S U= 1.34V 01:09 I= 0.59A 13

This data viewing will appear for about 10 seconds after pressing the button; then the overview of all four slots is shown again. However, it is possible to let this viewing appear the whole time: to do this press the button several times until you see the slot data you want to view and hold the button for about 2 seconds. Now data of this slot is shown until the accumulator is removed or the button is pressed again. If a program was finished successful RDY (for READY) is shown and the arrow disappears (battery symbol stops blinking at overview): 1:RDY C= 1489mAh MAN D= 1398mAh S U= 1.44V 04:16 I= A Now the accumulator can be removed (by the way if accumulator is removed during charge or discharge ERR for error can be shown for a short time because the unit recognizes that no current flows). If an accumulator stays in the unit and if it is necessary trickle charging (TRI) will be started after 5 hours at the earliest. This means the accumulator will be charged up (of course not after the discharge program where the accumulator is only discharged!). The capacity of trickle and the time needed for trickle are not shown or added. Only voltage and current are updated. Because of this you will see only the charged and discharged capacity and the needed time of the last absolved program. 5. Technical data Charging unit to charge/discharge up to four nickel-cadmium and/or nickel-metalhydride accumulators of size mono (UM1/D), baby (UM2/C), mignon (UM3/AA), micro (UM4/AAA) and lady (UM5/N) at the same time. max. power consumption....: 50 W Transformer: primary...: 230V~ / 50Hz secondary...: 2* 4V~ / 2 * 4.8A 1* 12V~ / 400mA Charging unit: Protection class...: 2 Charge current...: about 0.10 to 2.00 ampere for every slot Discharge current...: about 0.15 to 0.89 ampere for every slot Maximum voltage at the terminals...: 5.5V (high resistance, therefore harmless) If charging was not successful an error message ERR (for ERROR) is displayed and the charging unit won t treat this accumulator anymore: CHARGE MANAGER 1:ERR S 3: - 2: - 4: - This is a charging unit that can charge up to four accumulators at the same time. So if you want to charge further accumulators insert them into a free slot. The unit is recognizing this accumulator, starting the adjust program, starting the charge program after the adjust time and shows the last viewing again. This unit has a memory backup; this means that the charge programs and the added capacity values of all four slots are saved during power failure. Never change accumulators during power failure because the unit would keep these now invalid data! 14 15

6. Overview To charge an accumulator put them into a free slot. The unit starts accu settings. The charge mode AUTO or MAN can be selected by the function key. Without any press automatic mode is adjusted. At manual mode range of capacity has to be selected, too. Then charge program has to be adjusted: there CHARGE, DISCHARGE, CHECK, CYCLE and ALIVE are adjustable. If no selection is made the accumulator is charged with the CHARGE- program at automatic mode. If the charging unit has finished the charge program RDY is displayed. The accumulator can be removed. With every press of the function key the data of all inserted accumulators are shown one after the other. To see this viewing permanently the button has to be hold for about 2 seconds as soon as the right data appears. At power failure or if the unit is switched off all data and settings will be stored. Environmental protection: The final consumer is obliged to give all used accumulators back by law. It is not allowed to throw them away into the garbage. Exhausted batteries can be given back free at our branches or at our central office at Hirschau, or at collecting points as usual, which are obliged to take them back. Play your part at conservation. 10 1. 2.
