4 De Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth Onder het Erevoorzitterschap van H.M. de Koningin La Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth Sous la Présidence d Honneur de S.M. la Reine Toen Koningin Elisabeth de Muziekkapel op 12 juli 1939 inhuldigde, was dit het resultaat van een denkoefening rond de muziekopleiding die twintig jaar eerder met Eugène Ysaÿe werd ingezet. Fruit d une réflexion sur la formation musicale entamée 20 ans auparavant avec Eugène Ysaÿe, la Chapelle Musicale a été inaugurée le 12 juillet 1939 par la Reine Elisabeth. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog nam de Muziekkapel vanaf 1956 haar functie van opleidingsinstituut weer op. Tot in 2004 huisvest ze een twaalftal jonge musici en componisten, die elk begeleiding krijgen van een docent die ze zelf kiezen. Ze volgen een cyclus van drie jaar. In de Muziekkapel verblijven dan enkele generaties topmusici, die naam maken op het podium of een hoofdrol krijgen in het hoger onderwijs. In 2004 ondergaat de Muziekkapel een grondige herstructurering. Haar artistieke opleiding wordt op 3 pijlers gestoeld: Openheid: De Muziekkapel gaat internationaal, maar blijft verankerd in het Belgisch landschap. Flexibiliteit: De Muziekkapel tracht zich aan te passen aan het profiel van de jonge artiesten, met een systeem op maat (variabele cycli). Uitmuntendheid: De meesters in residentie (José van Dam, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Augustin Dumay en Artemis Kwartet) en hun genodigden werken samen met de jongeren in een systeem van «compagnonnage». Ze baseert haar opleiding momenteel op vier disciplines: piano, viool, zang en kamermuziek, voor een veertigtal jongeren in residentie. De Muziekkapel bouwde een onmisbare band uit tussen opleiding en toegang tot de musicale scène. Ze speelt een actieve rol in het muziekleven en is een pilootinstelling geworden, door haar banden met orkesten, festivals en concertzalen, zowel lokaal als in het buitenland (meer dan 100 concerten en producties in 2011). Tegelijk met de vernieuwing van de inhoud, voltooide de Muziekkapel in 2008 ook een financiële en juridische herstructurering, die haar dankzij de steun van haar bevoorrechte partners in België sinds 2004 (De Munt, het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten te Brussel, de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd, de Stichting Euphonia en de Filharmonische Vereniging van Brussel) in staat stelt om zich vandaag verder te ontwikkelen via twee instellingen: een stichting van openbaar nut, de Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth, die het operationeel gedeelte van het project beheert; een naamloze vennootschap met een sociaal oogmerk, «Chapelle Musicale», die eigenaar is van de roerende en onroerend goederen. De volgende uitdaging wordt de uitbouw van de infrastructuur, die noodzakelijk is voor het artistiek en cultureel programma in volle bloei: de bouw van nieuwe huisvesting, van muziekstudio s, van een theateratelier en een concertzaal. Om deze droom waar te maken, zal de steun van openbare en privé-partners bijzonder belangrijk zijn. Après la guerre, la Chapelle Musicale a repris sa fonction d institution de formation à partir de Jusqu en 2004, elle accueille en résidence une douzaine de jeunes musiciens et compositeurs, accompagnés chacun par un professeur de leur choix, pour des cycles de trois ans. Séjourneront alors à la Chapelle Musicale quelques générations de musiciens d élite, occupant une place prépondérante à la scène ou dans l enseignement supérieur. En 2004, la Chapelle Musicale vit une restructuration en profondeur ; Sa formation artistique se base sur 3 piliers : Ouverture : La Chapelle Musicale se donne une vocation internationale ancrée dans un paysage belge. Flexibilité : La Chapelle tente de s adapter à chaque profil de jeune en lui proposant un système tailor-made. (cycles variables). Excellence : Les maîtres en résidence (José van Dam, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Augustin Dumay et le Quatuor Artemis) et leurs invités témoignent d un esprit de compagnonnage avec les jeunes. Elle fonde actuellement sa formation sur quatre disciplines : le piano, le violon, le chant et la musique de chambre, pour une quarantaine de jeunes en résidence. La Chapelle Musicale a créé un lien indispensable entre la formation et l accès à la scène musicale. Elle est devenue en ce sens un acteur de la vie musicale et une institution pilote par ses liens avec les orchestres, les festivals et les salles de concert, aussi bien sur le plan local qu à l étranger (plus de 100 concerts et productions en 2011). Parallèlement à la rénovation du contenu, la Chapelle Musicale a aussi achevé en 2008 une restructuration financière et juridique, qui, grâce à l appui de ses partenaires privilégiés en Belgique depuis 2004 (La Monnaie, Le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, le Concours Reine Elisabeth, la Fondation Euphonia et la Société Philharmonique de Bruxelles), lui permet aujourd hui, de se développer à partir de deux outils: une fondation d utilité publique, la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, qui gère la partie opérationnelle du projet; une société anonyme à finalité sociale, la Chapelle Musicale, propriétaire du patrimoine mobilier et immobilier. Le prochain défi vise le développement des infrastructures, indispensable au programme artistique et culturel en plein essor : construction de nouveaux logements, de studios de musique, d un atelier de théâtre et d une salle de concert. 5 The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel Under the Honorary Chairwomanship of H.M. the Queen Offshoot of ideas about musical training initiated by Eugène Ysaÿe 20 years earlier, the Music Chapel was inaugurated on 12 July 1939 by Queen Elisabeth. After the Second World War, the Music Chapel resumed its role as an educational institution as of Up to 2004, it welcomed a dozen of young musicians and composers in residence, each supervised by a professor of their choice, for three-year cycles. A few generations of elite musicians were to stay in the Music Chapel, occupying an eminent place on stage or in higher education. In 2004, the Music Chapel underwent thorough restructuring; its artistic training is based on 3 pillars: Openness: The Music Chapel takes up an international vocation whilst embedded in a Belgian landscape. Flexibility: the Music Chapel tries to adapt to the profile of each young musician by offering a tailor-made program (variable cycles). Excellence: The masters in residence (José van Dam, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Augustin Dumay and the Artemis Quartet) and their guests attest to a spirit of apprenticeship for the young artists. It currently bases its curriculum on four disciplines: piano, violin, voice and chamber music, for some forty young musicians in residence. The Music Chapel has created an indispensable link between training and access to the stage. It has thus become an actor in musical life and a flagship institution through its connections with orchestras, festivals and broadcasters, locally and abroad (more than 100 concerts and productions in 2011). In parallel with the renovation of the content, the Music Chapel also completed a financial and legal restructuring in 2008, which, thanks to the support of its privileged partners in Belgium since 2004 (the Monnaie Opera House, the Centre for Fine Arts of Brussels, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the Euphonia Foundation and the Brussels Philharmonic Society) enables it today to develop from two bases: a public interest foundation, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, which manages the operational part of the project; a public limited company with a social purpose, the Chapelle Musicale, owner of the real estate and its equipment. The next challenge is geared to the development of the facilities, which are indispensable in a flourishing artistic and cultural program: the construction of new residence studios, music studios, a theatre workshop and a concert hall. The support of public and private partners will be of the utmost importance in making this dream come true. 7 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Concerto voor 3 pianos in F n 7, K. 242 Allegro - Adagio - Rondo (Tempo di menuetto) De configuratie van de solisten die in 1776 het concerto voor drie piano s van Mozart voor het eerst uitvoerden, lijkt sterk op deze van vanavond. Het werk werd inderdaad bij Mozart besteld door gravin Lodron, zuster van aartsbisschop Colloredo, die het een eerste keer liet horen in het gezelschap van haar twee dochters, Louise en Josepha. In tegenstelling tot Bach in zijn concerto met dezelfde bezetting, zoekt Mozart hier geen enkel contrapunt-effect. Hij speelt eerder op de imitaties, de vragen en antwoorden en de verdeling van de aangehouden noten. Het is een zeer heikele oefening die van de solisten naast de specifieke piano-kwaliteiten, een zelfde muzikale opvatting vraagt en vergt dat ze elkaar heel nauwgezet beluisteren. Dit concert ademt een vrolijkheid en elegantie die het geraffineerd ontspannend maken. Het gaat recht op het doel af. Vol elan en opgewekt zet het inleidend Allegro de drie solisten meteen aan het werk, het Adagio biedt zich als broze dromerij aan, en getuigt eens te meer van de rijke melodische verbeeldingskracht van Mozart in de trage bewegingen. Het finale Rondo, genoteerd in Tempo di minuetto, vervlecht in een meer complexe schriftuur en vindingrijk de drie klavierpartijen. Max Bruch Concerto voor viool n 1 in g, op. 26 Allegro moderato - Adagio - Finale, Allegro energico Max Bruch werd geboren in Keulen en stierf in Fridenau, bij Berlijn. Hij was een leerling van Ferdinand Hiller en van Carl Reinecke. Hij was niet alleen dirigent en docent, maar ook een bedreven en productieve componist. Zijn omvangrijke opus omvat symfonieën, opera s, concerto s, koorwerken (zeer veel). Maar zelfs toen hij nog leefde, was hij zo onverzettelijk conservatief dat hij nooit bekend was geraakt zonder enkele parels die hem van meet af aan de gunst van het publiek opleverden. In dat opzicht blijft zijn concerto nr.1 voor viool, dat opgedragen is aan de illustere Joseph Joachim, een favoriet van het repertoire. De invloeden van Mendelssohn en Brahms zijn merkbaar, onder meer in de toepassing van populaire thema s. Hij glijdt ze in een beheerste en stijlvolle schriftuur: de bijzonder virtuoze vioolpartij is uitvoerig en schitterend. Het inleidende Allegro moderato sluit aan bij de rapsodie en geeft met uitwisselingen tussen solist en orkest, een monumentale aanzet tot het hele concerto. Het Adagio is hoofdzakelijk rond één thema opgebouwd en wordt getooid, gevarieerd en herhaald tot een treffende diepgang. Het Allegro energico met dansende en zigeunertoetsen straalt uitbundig, maar natuurlijk. PAUSE Jacques Offenbach Les Contes d Hoffmann (uittreksels) Jacques Offenbach is de onbetwiste meester van de opera buffa en het publiek droeg hem op handen. Nochtans droomde hij er zijn hele leven van om zich aan het ernstige lyrische genre te meten. Hij kwam er op latere leeftijd toe, maar was toen al erg ziek. Dat verklaart waarom zijn enige opera onvoltooid bleef (enkel de partij van Antonia werd volledig georkestreerd), en waarom de volgorde van de drie vertellingen van Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann die hem tot onderwerp dienden, ook vandaag nog overgelaten wordt aan de vertolkers De actie kan in enkele woorden samengevat worden. De dichter Hoffmann koestert liefde voor drie vrouwen (gecombineerd in de figuur van Stella, de gesproken rol in de proloog): de mechanische pop Olympia, de zangeres Antonia en de courtisane Giulietta. Begeleid door Nicklausse, zijn bewaarengel en muze, onderwerpt hij zich aan de proeven die de aardse van de gesublimeerde liefde scheiden (de poëzie). In elke etappe wordt het donkere gedeelte van zijn avontuur vertolkt door een rivaal Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto, Dokter Miracle die staat voor het kwade, in een mengeling van macht en verleiding. 8 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Concerto pour 3 pianos en fa majeur n 7, K. 242 Allegro - Adagio - Rondo (Tempo di menuetto) La configuration des solistes qui créèrent, en 1776, le concerto pour 3 pianos de Mozart s apparente à celle de ce soir : l œuvre fut en effet commandée à Mozart par la comtesse Lodron, soeur de l archevêque Colloredo, qui en donna la première audition en compagnie de ses deux filles, Louise et Josepha. Contrairement à Bach dans son concerto pour le même effectif, Mozart ne recherche ici aucun effet de contrepoint, mais joue plutôt sur les imitations, les questions et les réponses et la répartition des traits. L exercice est particulièrement délicat et demande aux solistes, outre les qualités proprement pianistiques, une même conception musicale et une intense écoute mutuelle. Il se dégage de ce concerto une allégresse et une élégance qui en font un divertissement raffiné, atteignant sans détour le but visé : plein d élan et de joie, l Allegro initial met d emblée les trois solistes à l action, l Adagio, qui se présente comme une délicate rêverie, atteste une nouvelle fois la richesse de l invention mélodique de Mozart dans les mouvements lents, et le Rondo final, noté Tempo di minuetto et doté d une écriture plus complexe, entrecroise avec esprit les trois parties de clavier. Max Bruch Concerto pour violon n 1 en sol mineur, op. 26 Allegro moderato - Adagio - Finale, Allegro energico Né à Cologne, mort à Fridenau, près de Berlin, élève de Ferdinand Hiller et de Carl Reinecke, Max Bruch mena - outre ses fonctions de chef d orchestre et de professeur - une carrière de compositeur bien remplie : symphonies, opéras, concertos, œuvres chorales (très nombreuses) constituent un important corpus. Mais, même de son vivant, son conservatisme intransigeant l aurait éloigné de la notoriété sans quelques perles qui lui valurent d emblée la faveur du public. A cet égard, son concerto n 1 pour violon, dédié à l illustre Joseph Joachim, reste un des favoris du répertoire. Les influences de Mendelssohn et de Brahms y sont perceptibles - notamment dans le recours à des thèmes populaires -, glissées dans une écriture maitrisée et élégante ; la partie de violon, très virtuose, y est ample et brillante. De type rhapsodique, l Allegro moderato initial forme, à travers des échanges entre le soliste et l orchestre, une monumentale introduction à l ensemble du concerto ; l Adagio, construit pour l essentiel sur un seul thème, est orné, varié et repris jusqu à atteindre une poignante intensité ; et l Allegro energico aux accents tziganes et dansants, rayonne d exubérance et de naturel. PAUSE Jacques Offenbach Les Contes d Hoffmann (extraits) Maître incontesté de l opéra bouffe et adulé par le public, Jacques Offenbach rêva pourtant toute sa vie de se mesurer au genre lyrique «sérieux». Il y arriva tard, et déjà rongé par la maladie, ce qui explique que son unique opéra resta inachevé (seule la partie d Antonia fut complètement orchestrée) et que l ordre des trois contes d Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann lui servirent de sujet, est encore aujourd hui soumis à l appréciation des interprètes L action peut se résumer en quelques mots : à travers ses amours pour trois femmes (préfigurées par Stella, rôle parlé du prologue) - Olympia, la poupée automate, Antonia, la cantatrice, et Giulietta, la courtisane -, le poète Hoffmann, accompagné par Nicklausse, son ange gardien et sa muse, parcourt les épreuves séparant l amour terrestre de l amour sublimé (la poésie). A chaque étape, la partie noire de son aventure sera incarnée par un rival Lindorf, Coppélius, Dapertutto, Docteur Miracle - incarnation du mal, mêlant pouvoir et séduction. 9 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Concerto for 3 pianos in F major n 7, K. 242 Allegro - Adagio - Rondo (Tempo di menuetto) The configuration of soloists who premiered Mozart s concerto for three pianos in 1776 is similar to that of this evening: the work was actually commissioned by Countess Lodron, sister of Archbishop Colloredo, who gave the first performance accompanied by her two daughters, Louise and Josepha. Unlike Bach in his concerto for three pianos, Mozart seeks no counterpoint effect, but rather plays on the imitations, questions and replies and on the distribution of traits. The exercise is particularly delicate and requires, in addition to piano qualities proper, the same musical conception on the part of and intense mutual listening by the soloists. This concerto exudes a liveliness and elegance that turn it into refined entertainment, thereby attaining the objective without beating about the bush: full of feeling and joy, the initial Allegro has the three soloists enter into action from the outset; the Adagio, which arises like a delicate reverie attests yet again to Mozart s rich melodious invention in the slow movements; and the more complex final Rondo, in tempo di menuetto intertwines spiritedly the three keyboard parts. Max Bruch Concerto for violin n 1 in G minor, op. 26 Allegro moderato - Adagio - Finale, Allegro energico Born in Cologne and dead in Fridenau, near Berlin, a student of Ferdinand Hiller and Carl Reinecke, Max Bruch pursued, in addition to his duties as conductor and teacher, a very full career as a composer whose symphonies, operas, concertos and (very many) choral works constitute an important corpus. However, even when alive, his intransigent conservatism would have deprived him of any fame, if it were not for a number of gems that earned the public s favour from the outset. In this respect, his concerto n 1 for violin, dedicated to the illustrious Joseph Joachim, remains a favourite of the repertoire. The influences of Mendelssohn and Brahms can be perceived in this work especially the use the popular themes inserted in a masterly and elegant manner; the ever so virtuoso violin part is sweeping and brilliant. The initial rhapsodic Allegro moderato forms a monumental introduction to the entire concerto through the exchanges between the soloists and the orchestra; the Adagio, built essentially on a single theme, is ornate, varied and reprised until it reaches a poignant intensity; and the Allegro energico with its gipsy and dancing tones radiates exuberance and naturalness. PAUSE Jacques Offenbach Les Contes d Hoffmann (excerpts) An undisputed master of the comic opera and adored by the public, Jacques Offenbach nonetheless dreamed all his life to pit himself against serious lyrical drama. He would get there late, when already wasted by disease, which explains why his sole opera was left incomplete (only the part of Antonia was fully orchestrated), and the order of the three tales of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann he used for his subject, is still left to the discretion of performers. The action can be resumed in a few words: through his love for three women (prefigured by Stella, in the spoken role of the prologue) - Olympia, the automatic doll, Antonia, the singer, and Giulietta, the courtesan - the poet Hoffmann, accompanied by Nicklausse, his guardian angel and his muse, goes through the trials that separate earthly love from sublimated love (poetry). At each state, the dark part of his adventure will be incarnated by a rival Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto, Doctor Miracle the embodiment of evil, mixing power and seduction. 10 Nationaal Orkest van België Orchestre National de Belgique Met een rijke geschiedenis van meer dan 70 jaar is het Nationaal Orkest van België vandaag uitgegroeid tot een modern en flexibel orkest. Door compositieopdrachten aan Belgische componisten te geven en het met veel animo uitvoeren van nieuwe muziek houdt het NOB de vinger aan de pols van het binnen- en buitenlandse muziekleven. Daarnaast is het orkest ook enthousiast over het live begeleiden van filmmuziek en dankzij een uitgebreid aanbod projecten voor kinderen en jongeren wordt de passie voor symfonische muziek ook naar de jonge generaties overgedragen. Het NOB is geleid door de ervaren Weense maestro Walter Weller en de dynamische Zwitserse eerste gastdirigent Stefan Blunier. Ook bij de keuze van de solisten en andere gastdirigenten valt de complementariteit op tussen gerenommeerde uitvoerders en jonge aanstormende talenten, zoals Laureaten van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd. Het NOB is een bevoorrechte gast van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel, waar het in samenwerking met Bozar Music eigen reeksen voorstelt. Daarnaast speelt het orkest in alle Belgische provincies voor de drie Gemeenschappen van het land. Ook internationaal bouwt het NOB een stevige reputatie uit met cd-opnames die bij Fuga Libera verschijnen. En dit jaar trekt het NOB na de succesvolle concerttournees van de afgelopen jaren in Japan, en diverse Europese landen ook opnieuw naar Duitsland en Zwitserland. L ONB est dirigé par l éminent maître viennois Walter Weller et le dynamique chef d orchestre invité, le Suisse Stefan Blunier. Le choix des solistes et des autres chefs d orchestre invités frappe, lui aussi, par la complémentarité entre interprètes renommés et talents émergents, comme les jeunes lauréats du Concours Reine Elisabeth. L ONB est l hôte privilégié du Palais des Beaux-Arts à Bruxelles, où il présente ses propres séries, en collaboration avec BOZAR MUSIC. The National Orchestra of Belgium history goes back over 70 years, and has developed in our time into a modern, flexible orchestra. By commissioning work from Belgian composers and eagerly performing new music, the orchestra keeps its finger on the pulse of musical life, both in Belgium and abroad. Live performance to accompany film screenings has become one of its passions, while a wide range of projects for children and young people have helped to awaken a love of symphonic music among the younger generations. The musical direction is shared by the experienced Viennese maestro Walter Weller and the dynamic Swiss principal guest conductor Stefan Blunier. The orchestra s choice of soloists and of other guest conductors, moreover, shows a balance between renowned performers and up-and-coming young talent such as the laureates of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The NOB is a valued guest at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts, where in cooperation with BOZAR MUSIC it presents a number of concert series. The orchestra also performs in each of the provinces of Belgium, for the country s three linguistic Communities. Internationally, too, the NOB is developing a solid reputation with its CD releases on the Fuga Libera label. This year following successful concert tours of Japan and various European countries in recent years the NOB will travel to Germany and Switzerland again
