1 French Theatre for Schools Le Cabaret - Senior Cycle - Résumé Two friends are practising their songs for their weekly cabaret performance along with another friend, Rom. Rom is a singer, but he has no confidence in himself (il manque de confiance) and he is afraid to perform in public, especially as the others sometimes laugh at him (ils se moquent de lui). When he tries to make a suggestion about their act, they don t take him seriously and he storms off in a huff.only to meet with a very strange person who claims to have the remedy for his problem! Yes indeed, she claims to have knowledge of ancient medicines which she has, through modern science, created into pills or comprimés de confiance. If Rom will pay him only 60 they will not only build up his self-confidence but will help him achieve all his ambitions and desires (tout ce que vous désirez). Poor Rom is completely taken in but he doesn t have enough money to pay for the pills, so he tries to borrow it from the others. At first they are horrified, thinking the pilules he wants to buy are les drogues. But, when he explains about the stranger and her promises, they realize that he has been duped and that it is a trick (une ruse) to make him part with his money. They refuse. He tries to borrow from his aunt, a lady who is very rich but also rather eccentric- un petit peu étrange, mais riche she turns out to be very étrange indeed but he gets no joy there either! While he has been visiting his aunt, the cabaret manager has contacted the other two a performer has fallen ill and a replacement act is needed in a hurry do they know anyone they could recommend? Well, they have a brainwave why not disguise themselves, prepare a totally different act and get paid twice instead of once? Only then do they realize that they will need Rom s help for the new act. Now he is in a position to make a deal (un marché). He will help on condition that they buy the confidence pills for him. Stuck, they have to agree and, surprisingly, the pills appear to work. But are they really des pilules de confiance? Will they get away with their pretence? Venez voir!

9 FTFS Le Cabaret Tips for Teachers The Résumé and Lexique are intended for all students. The idea is to print them out beforehand and go over them in class so that everyone is familiar with the story line and key vocabulary. Even the weakest student should then be able to enjoy the story and the action. The Lexique for Le Cabaret is rather condensed to make it fit on one sheet of paper for printing purposes. It might be an idea to tackle it in three sections. An idea might be to do a Dictée with the expressions or even to play Hangman only using words and expressions on the sheet.! The student parts should be downloaded and the students chosen beforehand. Practice with the pronunciation and meaning would be appreciated beforehand, but the actors will meet with them when they arrive ( half an hour before performance time) and will rehearse their parts with them. They are not expected to learn them off by heart they can bring the scripts on stage with them. Again if you have time it would be an idea to go through one or two of the scripts in class, it will fill in the story line and mean that the others know what their friends are doing on stage!
