1 LABEX G EAU THERMIE PROFONDE Call for Project Magneto Telluric Monitoring of geothermal reservoir ( SMT Géothermie ) Project proposed by Pascal SAILHAC IPGS English Abstract Among the innovative methods that can contribute to improving the characterization and monitoring of geothermal reservoirs, the project SMT Géothermie focuses on the magneto telluric (MT). Basically, SMT Géothermie aims at using time series of the magnetic and electrical fields to image and follow geothermal activity. The main method is MT which is based on the diffusion of EM waves within the Earth and is related to the electrical conductivity at depth, a proxy for porosity, underground water chemical properties and temperature. Besides, the magnetic and electrical fields might appear to be influenced by electro kinetic phenomena and exhibit so called seismoelectromagnetic signals which could help in the characterization of underground flows and in the assessment of micro seismic hazard. During 2013, the project has been focused on the following works: improvement of MT processing (especially at low frequencies <1Hz), evaluation of two possible sites for magnetic referencing, testing SP and MT monitoring during the end of a stimulation period in Spring at ECOGI site near Rittershoffen, and testing CMA old magnetic coils connected to the METRONIX ADU07e modern acquisition system. In 2014, we will re process all the data acquired in 2013 to get impedance and phase tensor estimates at low frequencies (1 100s); this will be the first objective of one Master Research trainee (supported by remain of 2013 budget) who will also consider simple forward modeling. He will consider magnetic and gravity time series as resulting from equivalent sources at depth, either magnetic dipoles or electric dipoles, then discuss possible sources in terms of electric conductivity anomalies (through vortex or galvanic effects) or streaming flows (through electrokinetics). We would like to renew the SP and MT monitoring experiment at ECOGI site since a new borehole with stimulation and circulation tests are planned: while we started late and found several acquisition problems in 2013, this time our installation shall use better power supply and larger data storage; in addition, the setup shall be installed prior to the beginning of the circulation tests and be monitored by an experimented staff hired partly for the field work. Besides, the main task of this experimented research worker will be to run realistic forward modelling to improve our knowledge of the sensitivity of MT and gravity to geothermal changes in the Soultz Rittershoffen area actually we have a candidate experimented in both MT and gravity fields (see résumé of Yassine Abdelfettah). For the implementation, we take advantage of a new Metronix acquisition ADU07e partly bought by LABEX in 2013, pre existing equipment at IPGS (2 Metronix station of park INSU and 7 "soft coil" magnetic sensors) and at KIT (one Metronix station). We expect for a complementary support by the LABEX in equipment and operation: the additional equipment requested in 2014 is mainly on the purchase of one new Metronix stations (without magnetic coil); means operation include financing of field work, a trainee Master Research and one experimented research worker.

2 LABEX G EAU THERMIE PROFONDE Appel à Projet Suivi Magnéto Tellurique d un réservoir géothermique «SMT Géothermie» A/ Bilan d activités (2013) Sur la demande initiale (111k ), le projet a été soutenu partiellement (22.5%). Revues à la baisse, les actions menées à ce jour depuis le début du projet (printemps et automne 2013) sont les suivantes : Amélioration des outils d interprétation MT de l EOST : meilleures contraintes des basses fréquences par traitement joint de données magnétiques d observatoire (1Hz). L évaluation de deux sites possibles pour des mesures continues (512Hz) servant de référence magnétique sur deux sites maintenus par l EOST : l une en limite Nord Ouest de la CUS, à J9 (Observatoire gravimétrique), l autre dans les Vosges non loin du Mont Saint Odile, au Welschbruch (Observatoire géomagnétique). Le premier a permis de corriger la calibration des deux types de sondes magnétiques (MFS06 et MFS07e) mais ne peut pas être utilisé comme référence en raison de bruits d origine anthropique mal identifiés et ne pouvant pas être corrigés par filtrage ; le second site peut être utilisé comme site de référence mais est affecté par le passage de véhicules. Ce site a fonctionné du 12 juin au 21 juillet (échantillonnage à 512Hz) avec des sondes MFS06 (2 voies magnétiques horizontales). Une première expérience de suivi MT et PS a été réalisée à proximité du site d ECOGI suivant les stimulations du printemps 2013 : des mesures PS et MT près de la station sismologique RITT, et des mesures MT près de la station OPS4. En PS, nous avons des mesures du 28 juin au 23 juillet et du 8 aout au 25 sept. (échantillonnage à 1 min). En MT, en raison de problèmes d alimentation, nous n avons pas un réel suivi en continu : nous avons quelques séquences de 24h à OPS4 (2 voies électriques, et 3 voies magnétiques avec MFS07e), et d avantage à RITT (2 voies électriques, 2 voies magnétiques horizontales avec MFS06 et 1 verticales avec MFS07e) où nous avons des séquences de 2 à 3 jours (26 29 juin, 1 4 juillet, 5 8 juillet) ; on notera que d autres séquences sont disponibles à partir du 13 juin, mais elle ne font pas encore l objet d une analyse MT car une des 2 voies électriques est mal enregistrée. Nous avons aussi testé la connectivité de sondes magnétiques (CMA) anciennement acquises par l IPGS dans le cadre du PNRH (il y a 15 ans), avec une acquisition Metronix moderne ADU07e : par comparaison des mesures brutes avec celles de sondes modernes MFS06 et MFS07e, nous avons constaté qu on obtenait une dynamique comparable même après filtrage du 50Hz. Afin de permettre leur utilisation sur le terrain, 8 sondes de ce type ont été calibrées chez Metronix et 7 pourront être utilisées pour des périodes <100s. Résultats scientifiques préliminaires Les résultats préliminaires de l approche Magnéto Tellurique dans le suivi temporel de réservoir géothermique ont été présentés lors du colloque EGW 2013 à Strasbourg en octobre 2013 (résumé étendu et présentation sur le site geothermie.unistra.fr/article197.html). Le principal résultat est l obtention de premiers sondages MT successifs (à RITT), dont l interprétation a été commencée dans le cadre d un premier projet M2 en 2013, et sera synthétisée par un second projet M2 en 2014 (financé sur les reliquats) puis approfondie avec l aide d un CDD de chercheur (dans le cadre du nouvel appel à projet). Ceci est précisé dans les pages suivantes.

3 B/ Projet pour la poursuite du projet (2014) Plusieurs points restent à considérer pour la mise au point et l évaluation d une application du suivi magnéto tellurique dédié à la géothermie profonde. Aussi, nous envisageons de poursuivre le projet en abordant les taches suivantes : Traitement des données acquises en 2013 Master 2 (Timothé Tartrat) + P. Sailhac + H. Larnier + A. Chambodut Les données de 2013 on été traitée à l aide d une version améliorée du programme de traitement robuste issue de la thèse de Pierre Wawrzyniack. Ce programme assure une gestion automatique des dates et échantillonnages des séries à traiter, et permet le traitement de bruits à 50Hz (secteur) et à 50Hz/3 (chemins de fer allemand). Néanmoins sur les séries de 24h enregistrées lors de l expérience de Juin Juillet 2013, elle n a conduit qu à des estimations d impédance à des fréquences > 0.5Hz, ce qui correspond à des profondeurs d investigations de moins de 2km. Nous voulons maintenant utiliser les procédures développées lors du stage de Master 2 de Hugo Larnier, pour intégrer des données d observatoire géomagnétique et retraiter toutes les données en prolongeant la sensibilité des traitements à de plus grandes profondeur. Ce travail fera l objet d une partie du stage de Master 2 de Timothé Tartrat (financé sur les reliquats des crédits 2013). Modélisation simple par sources dipolaires Master 2 (Timothé Tartrat) + P. Sailhac Pour améliorer notre connaissance des signatures magnétiques et électriques causées par une variation de conductivité ou par une circulation de fluide en profondeur, le stage de Master 2 de Timothé Tartrat comporte aussi une phase de modélisation. Dans un premier temps, afin d éviter la trop grande complexité d une modélisation réaliste, nous commencerons en abordant le problème à l aide de sources dipolaires, électriques ou magnétiques, placées dans un milieu effectif d impédance uniforme : on pourra faire varier leur profondeur, leur intensité, et leur direction afin d aborder l influence de variations de conductivité (par effet vortex ou galvanique) ou de circulation de fluide (par électrocinétisme) de manière approximative. Ce type d approximation est courant en PS, et plus rare en EM mais a déjà été utilisé en VLF (par exemple Boukerbout et al. 2003, Darnet et al. 2004). Réalisation et traitement d une nouvelle expérience de suivi MT CDD (Yassine Abdelfettah) + P. Sailhac + P. D. Matthey + E. Schill + H. Larnier + A. Chambodut + T. Tartrat + M. Bano L expérience de suivi MT PS de 2013 nous a permis de mettre en évidence un certain nombre de lacunes en particulier concernant l alimentation et le stockage de données ayant conduit à de nombreux gaps dans les séries temporelles. Nous voulons refaire une expérience de suivi MT PS au printemps 2014 afin d évaluer au mieux les signatures magnéto telluriques possibles lors des tests de circulation prévues dans les puits du projet ECOGI. En particulier, notre expérience de 2013 nous a montré qu il est nécessaire d avoir une personne disponible et compétente associée la maintenance des stations de mesure : nous pensons pour cela faire appel à un chercheur expérimenté venant compléter notre groupe de travail. Il s agit de Yassine Abdelfettah (depuis 4 ans en Post Doc au CHYN de Neuchatel, CV ci joint). Il pourrait assurer le suivi logistique, puis le traitement des données acquises lors de cette nouvelle expérience. La période d acquisition irait d avril à septembre 2014 ; le site de référence serait installé à proximité du Welschbruch, les sites locaux seraient ceux d OPS4 et de RITT, complétés par deux autres installées au Nord et au Sud (en supposant l utilisation des deux stations METRONIX du parc INSU, de celle du KIT, de celle acquise en partie sur les crédits LABEX 2013, complétée par une 5ième acquise dans le cadre du présent appel à projet).

4 Modélisation MT (et Gravi) par une approche numérique 3D CDD (Yassine Abdelfettah) + P. Sailhac + E. Schill + H. Larnier (+J. Hinderer pour la Gravi + col. Externe P. Tarits pour la MT) Si le projet du stage de Master 2 de Timothé Tartrat est limité à une approximation dipolaire, nous avons néanmoins l intention d aborder aussi le problème de la sensibilité de manière plus réaliste. Nous souhaitons aussi considérer un milieu électrique 2D (issus du modèle de Geiermann & Schill 2010 reproduit ci dessous) et aborder numériquement le modèle direct 3D permettant d estimer plus précisément les perturbations du tenseur d impédance, ainsi que de phase, consécutives à des modifications de la distribution de conductivité en profondeur dans le voisinage de la faille d Hermersweiller. Cette partie modélisation pourra bénéficier d une collaboration externe au LABEX, avec Pascal Tarits (Univ. Brest), qui a déjà plusieurs expériences de modélisation 3D en MT. Nous envisageons ce travail de sensibilité de la méthode MT associé à un autre projet soumis au LABEX, dans lequel on s intéressera aussi à la sensibilité gravimétrique. Yassine Abdelfettah, déjà associé au projet MT pour le suivi logistique et le traitement de l expérience de suivi MT de 2014, pourrait compléter son activité en s investissant sur ce volet de modélisation numérique MT Gravi : ayant déjà travaillé en inversion jointe gravi MT pendant sa thèse à Brest, il semble avoir le profil idéal pour contribuer à plein temps à notre projet. Du point de vu financier, ce projet étant en partenariat avec Eva Schill du KIT, il est proposé au LABEX de soutenir un CDD d un an à mi temps, l autre mi temps étant alors pris en charge par le KIT. Fig : section électrique issue de l inversion 2D d un profil MT dans la région de Soultz Rittershoffen (Geiermann & Schill 2010) ; elle a été obtenue grâce à une régularisation limitant la résolution spatiale ; néanmoins elle montre néanmoins qu à 2 3 km de profondeur, on peut obtenir une assez bonne sensibilité illustrant des structures à l échelle de quelques centaines de mètres.

6 Budget prévisionnel pour Le budget prévu pour la poursuite du projet comporte deux colonnes : à gauche on trouvent les dépenses prévues sur les reliquats du projet (3.24k ), à droite se trouvent celles prévues dans le cadre du nouvel appel à projet LABEX 2014 (59k ) dont 32.5k correspondent à l emploi d un chercheur contractuel qui travaillera aussi sur le projet de suivi par gravimétrie hybride. On remarquera qu il sera aussi financé à 50% par le KIT afin de travailler en partenariat à 100% sur nos projets de suivi géophysique MT Gravi.
