DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Admission Requirements Students are admitted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applications must be submitted through the School of Graduate Studies online application website https://apply.sgs.utoronto.ca. Their dossier must include the following documents: one copy of the official transcript in a sealed envelope, two academic letters of recommendation, a specimen of written work in French done as part of the undergraduate degree and a Letter of Intent in French indicating whether they intend the M.A. to be a final degree or whether they intend to proceed subsequently to the Ph.D. They must also meet the following requirements: 1. B+ average standing or better, with at least B+ in French. 2. Linguistic competence in French. 3. Concentration in French literature and/or linguistics [a minimum of seven full courses, or equivalent, in French]. A minimum of five of the seven full courses, or equivalent, should be in the proposed area of study (i.e. literature or linguistics). A B+ average does not automatically lead to admission. Each dossier is studied by the Admissions Committee, which takes into account all relevant factors. The Department may offer direct admission (from the B.A.) to a Ph.D. program to exceptionally qualified applicants. Program Requirements The M.A. program is both a self-contained program and the first stage towards doctoral studies. It has two objectives: to allow the student to develop a thorough knowledge of the discipline through a program of course work in literary studies or linguistics; to develop an aptitude for research. It is a twelve-month program. At the beginning of his/her course of study the student will meet with either the Associate Chair or Coordinator, Graduate Admissions and Funding, in order to determine course selection with a view to ensuring that the student has a well-rounded program and, taken in conjunction with the undergraduate degree, has a broad knowledge of the discipline. Prerequisite work, if necessary. Students in both literature and linguistics are required to complete four full-course equivalents as follows: o Students in literature take the three graduate seminars in literature (FRE 1202H, FRE 1203H, and FRE 1204H) and 2.5 full-course equivalents from the regular graduate course offerings or 2.0 full-course equivalents and a half-course Research Essay FRE 5001H, a mémoire of approximately 35 pages, or 1.5 full-course equivalents and a full-course Research Essay FRE 5000Y, a page mémoire. o Students in linguistics take the graduate seminars in linguistics (FRE 1103H, FRE 1104H, and FRE 1141H) and 2.5 full-course equivalents from the regular graduate offerings or 2.0 full-course equivalents and a half-course Research Essay FRE 5001H, a mémoire of approximately 35 pages or 1.5 full-course equivalents and a full-course Research Essay FRE 5000Y, a page mémoire. Students must maintain a B average in order to be recommended for the degree and must obtain a minimum of mid-b in the Research Essay if taken. Students must also obtain a minimum of mid-b for the graduate seminars in literature (FRE 1202H, FRE 1203H, and FRE 1204H) or the graduate seminars in linguistics (FRE 1103H, FRE 1104H, and FRE 1141H). In exceptional circumstances only, and with the permission of the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, the student may take up to one full-course (1.0 FCE) equivalent outside the Department. Any student wishing to take a course outside the Department must make an appointment with the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, to discuss this matter in person. 3

Normally, part-time students take the graduate seminar in literature or the graduate seminars in linguistics during the first year of their programs. Essays for half-courses are to be between 3500 and 5000 words in length. Organization DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH ESSAY a. The student enrols in FRE 5000Y or FRE 5001H in September as part of the regular enrolment procedure. Students doing the program part-time should not enrol in these courses until they have completed at least two full courses (or the equivalent). Part-time students will normally take the graduate seminars in the first year of their program; they would not undertake the Research Essay before having begun the graduate seminars. b. Choice of Topic. Students may consult the Graduate Coordinator about potential directors. By January 31 the student should have arranged a topic with a director and registered the topic with the Department. c. The Research Essay is independent of any course the student is taking, but it may treat a topic related to one or more of those courses. Whatever its relation to course work, it will not replace the assignment(s) in any course. A student could, for example, take a half-course in Molière and write the Research Essay on Molière; s/he would do the regular assignments in the half-course and write the Research Essay in addition to the course work. In the preparation of the Research Essay, students are free to consult instructors as needed, and may review together a reasonable number of outlines and preliminary drafts. But once submitted, versions of written work are considered definitive and therefore not subject to rewriting and remarking. NOTE: The bibliographic assignment in the graduate seminar may be in the area of the intended Research Essay. d. The Research Essay will be written in French and be approximately typed pages in length for FRE 5000Y or 35 pages for FRE 5001H. It will be read by the director and at least one other person chosen by the director. In the case of disagreement in the evaluation by the two readers the Graduate Coordinator will name a third reader. Students must obtain a minimum of mid-b in the Research Essay to be recommended for the degree. Students should consult with the Department for further details on the supervision of the Research Essay. A copy of the Research Essay is to be filed with the Graduate Coordinator. 4

DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Admission Requirements Students are admitted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applications must be submitted through the School of Graduate Studies online application website https://apply.sgs.utoronto.ca. Their dossier must include the following documents: one copy of the official transcript from each university attended must be sent by the Registrar directly to the Department in a sealed envelope, two academic letters of recommendation, a sample of written work in French completed as part of the applicant s bachelor's or master's program in French literature or linguistics as appropriate, and a copy of the applicant s up-to-date curriculum vitae. This written work should be a copy of the M.A. thesis if available. Applicants holding a master's degree must submit a statement of purpose in French (maximum 500 words) which clearly outlines the area in which the applicant intends to pursue research in French literature or linguistics. Admission to the Ph.D. program is available via one of two routes: o an appropriate bachelor's degree with high academic standing from a recognized university, that includes at least seven full-course equivalents in French language and literature/linguistics, with an average grade of at least an A- in the overall program. Admission is limited to exceptionally qualified applicants. o an appropriate master's degree in French literature or linguistics with high academic standing from a recognized university, with an average grade of at least an A- in the applicant's overall program. An A- average does not automatically lead to admission. Each dossier is studied by the Admissions Committee, which takes into account all relevant factors. Applicants must satisfy the Department that they are capable of independent research in French literature or linguistics at an advanced level. Program Requirements A Ph.D. student shall pursue a program of study and research in French Literature/Linguistics approved by the Department. The timetable of the Doctoral program and the nature of the Field Examination are as follows: (This schedule represents the progress of a student admitted on the basis of a master s degree. In the case of students admitted on the basis of a bachelor s degree, for first year read second year, for second year read third year, etc.) 1 Course work. o A student admitted on the basis of a bachelor's degree must complete 4.0 full-course equivalents during the first year of the program and 3.5 additional full-course equivalents during the second year. In exceptional circumstances only, and with the permission of the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, the student may take up to one full-course (1 FCE) equivalent outside the department in each of the two years of courses. Any student wishing to take a course outside the Department must make an appointment with the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, to discuss this matter in person. Students in literature take FRE 1202H, FRE1203H, FRE 1204H and FRE 1201H as part of their program; students in linguistics take FRE 1103H, FRE 1104H, FRE 1141H, and FRE 1201H as part of their program. To remain in good academic standing and to continue in the Ph.D. program, a student must complete 4.0 full-course equivalents, with an average grade of at least an A-, by the end of the first year of the program and complete the remaining 3.5 full-course equivalents, maintaining an average of at least an A-, by the end of the second year. 5

o A student admitted on the basis of a master's degree must complete 3.5 full-course equivalents during the first year of the program. In exceptional circumstances only, and with the permission of the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, the student may take up to one full-course (1 FCE) equivalent outside the Department. Any student wishing to take a course outside the Department must make an appointment with the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, to discuss this matter in person. Students in literature take FRE 1202H, FRE1203H, FRE 1204H, unless these courses or their equivalents have already been completed, and FRE 1201H as part of their program; students in linguistics take FRE 1103H, FRE 1104H, and FRE 1141H unless already completed, and FRE 1201H as part of their program. To remain in good academic standing and to continue in the Ph.D. program, a student must complete 3.5 full-course equivalents, with an average grade of at least an A-, by the end of the first year of the program. Essays for half-courses are to be between 3500 and 5000 words in length. 2 Thesis topics. By September 15 of the second year of registration, in the case of a student admitted to the Ph.D. program on the basis of a master s degree, otherwise by September 15 of the third year of registration, a student must register a thesis topic with the Department. The proposal must be signed by the faculty member who has agreed to direct the thesis and by the two faculty members who will serve on the student s supervisory committee. 3 Language requirement. By the end of the first year of the Ph.D. program, in the case of a student admitted on the basis of a master s degree, otherwise by the end of the second year of the Ph.D. program, the student must demonstrate a reading knowledge of Old French or of another language (excluding French and English), as approved by the Department. 4 Field Examination. The Field Examination is designed to demonstrate that the student is sufficiently familiar with the primary and secondary works in his/her field to be able to proceed to original research and preparation of the doctoral thesis. No later than the second session of the second year of registration in the Ph.D. program, in the case of a student admitted on the basis of a master s degree, otherwise no later than the second session of the third year of registration, a student must pass the two parts of the Field examination: a written part to be taken by March 15 and an oral part taken by April 30. N.B. The dates given below represent the latest a given requirement must be completed. Students are encouraged to undertake earlier completion, provided the supervisory committee concurs. In the second year: It is the responsibility of the student to approach a professor in the French Department whose specialty is in the Field chosen. The student must submit by September 15 of the second year of the doctoral program, his/her thesis subject form indicating the aims, the general framework and issues, the methodology and the corpus of the doctoral thesis. This form must also contain the names and signatures of the thesis supervisor(s) and members of the supervisory committee. The student's thesis subject must be approved by the Curriculum Committee and by the General Assembly of the Graduate section of the French Department. Once the thesis subject is approved, the student will then meet at least once with the supervisory committee to clarify and specify the thesis topic. 6

By November 15 of the second year of the doctoral program, the student will produce a written document of approximately 10 pages (double-spaced) outlining the major area the literary or linguistic corpus, the methodological and theoretical perspectives and approaches from which the thesis will be derived, together with a thematically organized bibliography indicating the primary and secondary works relevant to this area that the student is expected to know in detail. This document will form the basis for the written part of the Field Examination. The thesis supervisor will certify to the Department that the document is satisfactory by signing a copy which is to be kept in the Department. The student will then distribute a copy to each member of the supervisory committee. The written part The written part of the Field Examination is a take-home examination to be completed by March 15 of the second year of the doctoral program (Ph.D. II.) The goal of this examination is to evaluate the student s familiarity with the general area of expertise within which the specific thesis topic will subsequently be located. It is not specific to the proposed thesis topic. The examination will contain four questions divided into two sections: two questions will deal with the primary works or corpus presented in the November document, and two questions will deal with relevant theoretical and methodological issues indicated in that document; the student must answer one question in each section. All questions and answers must be in French. The written part is evaluated by three voting members of the thesis supervisory committee solely on the basis of content (Pass/Fail). A simple majority (two positive votes out of three) is required for successful completion. The student must pick up and sign for the questions at the French Department one week before the date for submitting the examination to the Department. A student may not proceed to the oral part of the examination until he/she has successfully completed the written part. In the case of a failure, the supervisory committee will meet with the student in order to discuss the weaknesses that caused the failure and to make specific recommendations concerning the student's program. The committee may recommend that the written part of the examination be retaken in whole or in part within a specific period of time; it may also recommend termination of the student's program. The student may retake the written part of the examination once only. Retaking it will modify neither the general time limits for completion of the doctoral dissertation, nor the period of time funding is provided to the student by the Department. The oral part The oral part of the Field Examination is to be taken by April 30 of the second year of the doctoral program. It is based on a document consisting of a page (double-spaced) thesis proposal accompanied by an appropriate bibliography. The student may consult the members of his/her thesis committee during the preparation of this document. This part of the examination will be conducted in French. Exceptions may be made only for extra-departmental members of the supervisory committee. Students must submit their written document to each member of the supervisory committee and to the Department one week before the date of the oral part of the examination which will be chaired by an officer of the Graduate section of the French Department, or delegate, who does not vote on the student's performance. The student will make a 20-minute oral presentation, followed by questions from the committee. Evaluation of the oral part of the examination is on a Pass/Fail basis and takes into account both the written document and the oral presentation. A simple majority (two positive votes out of three) is required for successful completion. The written document and accompanying bibliography must be filed with the French Department by the student once he/she has passed the examination. In the case of a failure, the supervisory committee will make specific recommendations concerning the 7

student's program. The committee may recommend that the examination be retaken within a specific period of time; it may also recommend termination of the student's program. The student may retake the oral part of the examination once only. Retaking it will modify neither the general time limits for completion of the doctoral dissertation, nor the period of time funding is provided to the student by the department. Results in the written and oral parts of the Field Examination shall be communicated to the officers of the Department by the Supervisory Committee, normally via the thesis supervisor; the Department will then communicate the results to the student. STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT OF APPEAL WITHIN AND BEYOND THE DEPARTMENT. 5 Between the completion of the field examination components and the oral examination on the thesis, the student will meet with the supervisory committee at least once a year, and more frequently if required. 6 Thesis and oral examination on the thesis. Periodically the Department organizes a workshop on how to prepare for the thesis defence. Failure to satisfy and complete the above requirements in a manner consistent with the Department's timeline for completion of the PhD degree will result in loss of good academic standing ( ) and guaranteed funding. 8

The recommended completion time for the Ph.D. program is four years: YEAR I YEAR II YEARS II AND III YEAR IV - Coursework - Language requirement normally to be completed by end of year - Field Examination to be completed by end of second term - Thesis undertaken - Thesis completed 9

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Financial assistance of two sorts is available, graduate assistantships and fellowships. Most fellowships can be held in conjunction with an assistantship. Assistantships The Department of French makes a number of appointments of Teaching Assistants to fulltime students, with priority being given to doctoral students, to do undergraduate teaching or laboratory monitoring. Students must apply for a Teaching Assistantship. Applications (two documents) are available to download in Microsoft Word format (application form and questionnaire). Print the forms and send them to the address listed on the forms. Fellowships/Scholarships The following is a summary of the major fellowships and scholarships available. Additional information can be found in the section on fellowships in the SGS Calendar, or by consulting the Fellowships & Loans Office of the School of Graduate Studies, 63 St. George Street. a. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowships (SSHRC) To be eligible students must be full-time and have an average of at least A-. Open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Details are available in September at the Graduate Department of French. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is usually in October. b. Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) To be eligible students must be full-time and have an average of at least A-. Open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. A limited number of scholarships are available for visa students. Details are available in November on the School of Graduate Studies website. The departmental deadline for receipt of completed applications is usually in February. c. Fellowships awarded by the University Doctoral program students, subject to certain requirements, are eligible for a four-and-a-half-year funding package made up of the following components: tuition fees; teaching assistantship 1 and research assistantship; University of Toronto Fellowship (including any scholarships awarded by the University of Toronto as well as any scholarships offered by external sources such as SSHRC, OGS and FCAR). This funding package has an approximate value of $23,425 ( amount). Students ineligible for the funding package may receive financial support in the form of a teaching assistantship. Applicants for admission to the School of Graduate Studies will automatically be considered for University of Toronto Fellowships provided the applications are received complete by JANUARY 15 th, Note that once the funding has concluded, doctoral students will continue to hold a sixth appointment equal to at least half the number of hours of the initial appointment. 11

A student who holds a major external award (e.g., SSHRC, OGS) is not eligible to receive funding from a University of Toronto Fellowship during the same year. The Department undertakes, however, to offer a Teaching Assistantship to each student in the funded cohort who holds such an award. The Department normally provides top-up awards to recipients of one-year SSHRC awards or OGS within the funded cohort; the value may vary from year to year according to available resources. Students who have reached year 6 of enrolment in the Ph.D. program are no longer within the funded cohort and are not eligible for University of Toronto Fellowship funding. The Department will endeavour to offer a Teaching Assistantship to such students, but such support is not guaranteed as a matter of policy. All students admitted to the M.A. program, as of September 2012, will receive a half funding package of approximately $11,700, which includes a work assignment (correcting duties, research assistantship, etc.) in the department. Part-time M.A. students are not eligible for awards or Teaching Assistantships. d. Scholarships awarded by the Department The Department normally awards a certain number of annual scholarships based on a combination of academic performance and financial need. No application is required, but since the majority of the awards involve the use of OSOTF funds, recipients must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and must be Ontario residents at the time the award is made; they must fill out a form demonstrating financial need. There is also a modest amount of unencumbered funding available for awards to visa students. Changes in the amounts available in the Departmental funds from year to year, as well as possible revisions to criteria according to which Departmental awards will be distributed, necessarily produce variations. Doctoral Thesis Prize in French This prize is awarded annually to the doctoral candidate who submits the best Ph.D. thesis in the Graduate Department of French. Value: approximately $250. Augustine Fitzgerald Fellowship The income from the Augustine Fitzgerald Fund provides a scholarship awarded annually to a Canadian-born, English-speaking graduate student, whose native tongue is not French, for further study of or research in the French language or French literature. Application not required. Value: annual income. Department of French Graduate Scholarships Awarded by the Faculty of Arts and Science, on the recommendation of the Department of French, to graduate students with outstanding achievements entering particular areas of research in a Ph.D. program. Eligible students are drawn from the Department of French. A total of seven scholarships are available. Application not required. Value: annual income. OSOTF 12

Full information is available from the School of Graduate Studies. 2) Emergency Grant The intent of the Emergency Grant Program is to assist currently registered, full-time, graduate students beyond their first year of studies who generally are not part of the funded cohort, and who encounter an unanticipated serious financial emergency. It is not considered to be a source of routine or long-term funding. 3) Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) Application forms and brochures can be obtained from the Office of Admissions and Awards, 172 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario M5R 0A3 ( ). 13

PEDAGOGICAL TRAINING All students holding a first Teaching Assistantship in the Department are required to attend a series of workshops on teaching methods and the conducting of classes. These workshops constitute part of the TA contract, and thus generate remuneration at the contractual rate. Classroom inspections are carried out and feedback provided by experienced teachers in order to help TAs improve and refine their teaching. Pedagogical advice is also regularly available on request. JOB HUNTING There are several sources of information for teaching positions. For Canadian universities there are two monthly publications which can be obtained at the University library: the bulletin entitled University Affairs/Affaires universitaires, issued by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (A.U.C.C.), and the Bulletin of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (C.A.U.T.). The former may be obtained free of charge from 151 Slater, Ottawa K1P 5H3. On a world-wide basis, the student may find the Times Educational Supplement, the New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education and the M.L.A. Job Information List useful. Periodically the Department organizes a workshop for graduate students on how to prepare for an interview for an academic position. CAREER CENTRE The Career Centre offers a variety of services to meet the career planning and employment needs of graduate students pursuing academic and non-academic careers. Students pursuing academic careers are encouraged to register with the Graduate Dossier Service, a depository for confidential application material. Career counsellors are available to meet with all students, one-on-one or in a workshop setting, to discuss career development and employment search plans including C.V. critiques. Additionally, the Career Centre has an extensive collection of academic and non-academic career and employment related information in the Career Resource Library the largest in Canada, a Resume Clinic, practice interview sessions and an online employment listing service. Location: Koffler Students Services Centre, 214 College Street, Toronto ON M5T 2Z9 ( ) (https://www.studentlife.utoronto.ca) PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is considered by the University to constitute a major academic offence. The Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters states: It shall be an offence for a student knowingly to represent as one s own any idea or work of another in any academic examination or term test or in connection with any other form of academic work, i.e., to commit plagiarism. Wherever in the Code an offence is described as depending on knowing, the offence shall likewise be deemed to have been committed if the person ought reasonably to have known. See How Not to Plagiarize (http://www.writing.utoronto.ca/advice/using-sources/how-not-toplagiarize), and Academic Misconduct (Plagiarism, etc) 14

Organizations (GSU, GFA, CUPE) Applicants may wish to contact students already enrolled in the department by writing or phoning the Graduate Students' Union (GSU). The GSU is the association to which all graduate students belong, and which represents them at the University level as well as through the Ontario Federation of Students and the Canadian Students Federation. It is a federation of course unions which represent students at the graduate unit level. Address inquiries to: Graduate Students' Union, 16 Bancroft Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1C1 ( ). (http://www.gsu.utoronto.ca) In this Department, graduate students are represented by the Graduate French Association (GFA)/Société d'études Supérieures du Département d'études Françaises (SESDEF), which organizes social events as well as professional activities (practical workshops, student colloquia, and publications, etc.) The GFA/SESDEF (http://sesdef.sa.utoronto.ca) is also a forum through which Master and Doctoral students can contribute directly to ongoing discussions about the content and structure of this department's graduate programs. Like any student organization, the GFA/SESDEF only functions through the active participation of its members. All students can benefit by attending meetings and becoming involved. All students who work for the University of Toronto as Teaching Assistants, instructors etc. are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees/Syndicat Canadien de la Fonction Publique, Local More information regarding the Union, the Collective Agreement etc. can be obtained either from the departmental steward (elected annually) or from: CUPE/SCFP (Local 3902) 180 Bloor Street West, suite 902, Toronto, ON M5S 2V6, ( ). 19 FRE 1103 H-F Séminaire de linguistique I Phonétique et phonologie (P. Bhatt) Ce cours vise à compléter la formation théorique fondamentale proposée par les Séminaires de linguistique II et III.
