2 Golf Canada Foundation Fondation Golf Canada The Golf Canada Foundation was organized in 1979 through the initiative of the Royal Canadian Golf Association. The mandate of the Foundation, a registered Canadian amateur athletic association, is to raise and grant funds for the advancement of golf in Canada. The Foundation delivers this mandate by awarding scholarships to Canadian student golfers and distributing grants to support initiatives in women s golf, junior golf, high performance golf, collegiate golf, and golf heritage. Money is raised for qualifying programs through fundraising events, the Golf Canada Foundation Trustee program, and other donation campaigns and initiatives Events The Golf Canada Foundation held four major fundraising events in 2014: the Golf Canada Foundation Monday Pro-Am at the RBC Canadian Open in July (Montréal, Québec), the Wine, Women & Shoes event celebrating Women s Golf in August (Markham, Ontario), the Golf Canada Foundation Monday Pro-Am at the CP Women s Open in August (London, Ontario), and the Celebration of Golf event held in September at Angus Glen Golf Club (Markham, Ontario). Donations & Grants As a non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations as an essential source of revenue. Tax receipts are issued for all donations. Événements La Fondation Golf Canada a organisé quatre événements majeurs de collecte de fonds en 2014 : Pro-Am du lundi de l Omnium canadien RBC (juillet, Montréal), Vin, femmes et chaussures, un hommage au golf féminin (août, Markham, Ontario), Pro-Am du lundi de l Omnium féminin Canadien Pacifique (août, London, Ontario) et Célébration du golf, événement qui a eu lieu en septembre au Angus Glen Golf Club de Markham, en Ontario. Dons et subventions Les dons constituent la source principale de revenu de la Fondation, un organisme sans but lucratif. Des reçus à des fins fiscales sont émis pour tous les dons. 3 Golf Canada Foundation President's Report Rapport du président de la Fondation Golf Canada This year saw the Foundation take another important step in establishing itself as the leading source for golf philanthropy in Canada, giving out almost $1 million in grants and scholarships in We re extremely proud to provide the financial support for one of Golf Canada s major initiatives, launching the Young Pro Squad as a part of Team Canada. This is an important program that provides a bridge between the outstanding successes Canada has had at the amateur level to helping more young professional players make the leap to a career at the top levels of the game. Modeled after successful international programs, Young Pro provides coaching, training camps, financial assistance, and the latest in sports science support to allow the players to focus on becoming the best players possible. We strongly believe that Canadians performing well on the world stage will inspire the next generation of players to help grow the game in Canada. En 2014, la Fondation Golf Canada a fait un pas de plus pour s établir comme la première source philanthropique de golf au Canada, octroyant près de 1 million de dollars en subventions et bourses. Foundation Donors and Events Our Trustee program continues to grow, to a total of 25 Trustees making an investment in the Foundation and the programs we support. Starting at a minimum investment of $5,000 per year, Trustees receive exclusive access to all things Canadian golf: events, experiences, access to top players, and partner discounts and offers. For the year the Foundation focused on four main fundraising events: 1. The Monday Pro-Am at the RBC Canadian Open, The Royal Montreal Golf Club 2. The Canadian Pacific Women s Open Monday Pro-Am, London Hunt and Country Club 3. Wine, Women, and Shoes, Angus Glen Golf Club 4. Celebration of Golf, Angus Glen Golf Club Donateurs et événements de la Fondation Notre Programme de supporteurs continue de croître. 4 Thank you to all who participated in these events and all the volunteers who made these happen. They made a significant contribution to programs and to communicating our vision and mission. Scholarships/Grants The Golf Canada Foundation continued its longstanding support of collegiate golf in Canada by awarding fourteen scholarships with a combined value of $66,000, and 25 matching grants totaling $100,000, which ensured $200,000 went toward Canadian college and university golf programs. I would like to thank the Scholarship/Grant committee and the Women s Fund committee for their hard work and oversight of two important Foundation programs in I also wish to thank the Kucey family, Connor/ Spafford families and the Canadian Seniors Golf Association for their continued funding of the scholarships and new emphasis on giving back to junior golf. Furthermore, I extend our thanks to the Kanawaki Golf Club, the principle benefactor of the Suzanne Beauregard Scholarships and the New Brunswick Golf Association for the Mary Ellen Driscoll Scholarship. I thank my fellow Directors for their hard work and guidance through a year of growth and development for the Foundation. I appreciate all the effort and support that you all have committed to the Foundation, and look forward to continuing our work together in years to come. 5 CEO Report Rapport du chef de la direction Building on the new areas of focus we established in 2013, 2014 provided many highlights and successes. In 2014 we: expanded the popular Monday Pro-Am format by adding the Canadian Pacific Women s Open Pro-Am in London, Ontario welcomed the voice of the Habs, Michel Lacroix, Montreal Canadiens players and alumni to the Monday Pro-Am at The Royal Montreal Golf Club implemented a new collegiate matching funds program and increased the number of beneficiary schools by 39% celebrated women s golf and the upcoming Pan Am/Parapan Am Games at the inaugural World Junior Girls championship at Angus Glen in Markham, Ontario brought the wonderful Wine, Women and Shoes event to Angus Glen funded the launch of Golf Canada s Young Pro program with five up-and-coming players cheered the first win on the PGA Tour from a former Team Canada member, Nick Taylor Financial Performance Overall program donations were up 104% from 2013, and up 319% from 2012 due to growth in our Trustees, events, and the addition of the Women s Fund. In order to continue growth in 2015, we are looking to expand our donor network on the east coast and in western Canada. 6 Objectives for 2015 As we reach out to the golf community across Canada, we hope to deliver best in class events unique to Canadian golf. We will build on an excellent base of support by communicating our message to new donors and companies interested in investing in the future of Canadian golf as we look toward golf s return to the Olympic Games in Rio, Thank you to Canadian Pacific, RBC, Citi Canada, BMW, TO2015, the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Canadiens Alumni, our Trustees, and the Foundation Board, all have been instrumental on building the Foundation into one of the top sports charities in Canada. 7 Women s Fund Report Rapport du Fonds destiné aux femmes The Women s Fund had a very rewarding year under the umbrella of the Golf Canada Foundation. A total of $179, was granted from the fund in 2014 for 5 very worthwhile projects. 1. Golf Canada World Junior Girls Championship $75, saw the inaugural World Junior Girls Championship held at Angus Glen Golf Course. This prestigious tournament was the first of its kind for junior girls, involving 48 of the best young female golfers from 15 countries. It also showcased the CN Future Links National Skills Challenge and delivered grass roots participation for young girls through free golf clinics. The Women s Fund grant of $75,000 helped to make this event a huge success. 2. PGA of Canada $22,790 The PGA of Canada received $22,790 to enable them to provide a variety of Coaching & Development opportunities to women members as well as grassroots level community coaches. 3. Golf Quebec $2,000 Golf Quebec visited junior girls Ringette teams to promote golf with the She Swings, She Scores program. This program gave young girls the opportunity to use golf equipment in their own environment as well as a team visit to a local golf facility. 4. Wine, Women & Shoes $30,000 The Golf Canada Foundation held a Wine, Women & Shoes evening at Angus Glen attracting over 200 attendees. It was a great opportunity for Martin to explain the goals and purpose of the Foundation to help grow the sport and create more opportunities for women in golf. Golf Québec $ Golf Québec a visité des équipes de ringuette composées de filles juniors pour faire la promotion du golf par le truchement du programme Elle s'élance et compte. Ce programme permet aux jeunes filles d utiliser de l équipement de golf dans un environnement familier et de visiter un établissement de golf local. 4. Vin, femmes et chaussures $ La Fondation Golf Canada a présenté un événement Vin, femmes et chaussures au Angus Glen Golf Club, de Markham, en Ontario, auquel assistaient plus de 200 personnes. 8 5. Young Pro Program $50,000 The Women s Fund approved $50,000 to go directly towards matching donations to support a team of young professionals. The primary focus is to help improve the playing ability of players once they turn pro by overcoming the many hurdles they face in coaching, managing their careers, equipment, sport science schedule and training. This year recipients were: Rebecca Lee Bentham, Jennifer Kirby and Sue Kim. As Chair for 2014, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our committee for their dedication and commitment in upholding the integrity and mandate of this fund. Also thank you to Martin, Spencer and the Foundation Board for their desire to continue on with the mandate of the Women s Fund and who made this transition a success. 9 Scholarship & Grants Committee Report Rapport du Comité des bourses et subventions The committee, once again evaluated scholarship applications from all across Canada. In 2014 the Foundation received 31 applications, a decrease from 2013 numbers. We must re-focus efforts to ensure prospective recipients are aware of the available scholarships. In 2014, 17 students were awarded scholarships and the combined value of these awards was $66,000. Once again, it is extremely important to implement a concerted effort to increase awareness across Canada of the scholarships available. The University Grant Fund In 2014 the granting process was changed to provide incentives for the schools and their donors to get more involved in supporting the collegiate programs. Under the new process schools still apply for funding, and once they are approved they must demonstrate the amount that they have raised externally over a specific time period. In 2014, 25 academic institutions submitted applications requesting grant funding, an increase from 16 applications in All schools received funding, and a total of $100,000 in grants was distributed to the 25 golf programs generating over $200,000 to support collegiate golf in Canada. The goal of the grant program for Canadian Universities and Colleges continues to be to provide a viable option for young Canadian golfers to pursue their post-secondary educations in Canada. The program reached approximately 383 students this year, providing scholarships for academics and funds for golf programs at the schools, so that students can continue to play golf while studying and developing as future members of the Canadian business community. 15 Events Recap Rétrospectives des événements Women s Golf Event Building on both the success of last year s Wine, Women & Shoes event in Edmonton, as well as the growing excitement around Angus Glen hosting the 2014 World Junior Girls Championship and 2015 Pan Am golf event, the Golf Canada Foundation held an event focusing on women s golf the evening of August 10th at Angus Glen Golf Club. Similar to last year, the theme of the evening was Wine, Women & Shoes, and the event was advertised as a fun, unique evening involving shopping, wine, golf, and fashion. Due largely to the great efforts put forth by the event committee, the Foundation managed to attract over 200 attendees to the event. The committee included Golf Canada Foundation Board members Cailey Stollery (President of Angus Glen) and Liz Hoffman. The Angus Glen staff were also key contributors to the event s success. There were wines from 8 different wineries, clothing and accessories on sale from 10 different vendors, and a fantastic fashion show to cap off the night. The evening s host and auctioneer was Evanka Osmak, a sports anchor for Rogers Sportsnet who has also helped Golf Canada with the Golf Fore the Cure initiative in the past. With over 20 auction items and four different raffle competitions to participate in, the evening was full of fun activities and contests. Martin Barnard, the CEO of the Golf Canada Foundation, spoke to the crowd to explain the goals and purpose of the Golf Canada Foundation, and every attendee received a pamphlet about the Foundation. Cailey also spoke to the crowd and explained how golf played a significant role in her family and in her life, and thanked everyone for contributing to the Foundation and helping to grow the sport and create more opportunities for women in golf. Comme l année précédente, sous le thème Vin, femmes et chaussures, cet événement unique faisait large part au magasinage, au vin, au golf et à la mode. Les efforts du comité d organisation ont été récompensés puisque plus de 200 personnes ont participé à l événement. Le comité comprenait deux membres du Conseil d administration de la Fondation Golf Canada, Cailey Stollery, présidente d Angus Glen, et Liz Hoffman. Le personnel d Angus Glen a aussi grandement contribué au succès de l événement. Le vin provenait de huit établissements vinicoles, les vêtements et accessoires de 10 fournisseurs, le clou de la soirée étant un fantastique défilé de mode. Evanka Osmak, de Rogers Sportsnet, a joué le double rôle d animatrice et commissaire-priseur, elle qui a aussi prêté son concours dans le passé à Vert la guérison, une autre initiative de Golf Canada. Plus de 20 objets ont été mis aux enchères tandis que quatre tombolas étaient tirées, le tout à l enseigne du plaisir. More importantly, the Foundation managed to spread more awareness for both the organization as a whole and our mission going forward. Golf Canada Foundation Pro-Am (RBC Canadian Open) 2014 marked the second year of the Golf Canada Foundation Pro-Am on the Monday of the RBC Canadian Open. On Monday July 21st, the Pro- Am was held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Ile-Bizard, Quebec. The objective of the Pro-Am was to create awareness and raise funds for Foundation initiatives, in particular the Young Pro program instituted by Golf Canada. The Pro-Am was supported by the sponsors of the RBC Canadian Open and featured the top Canadian golfers, including the five Canadians on the PGA Tour, as well as alumni and current players from the Montreal Canadiens. There were 20 teams that participated, and the day included food stations on-course, premium gifting, and a full lunch reception preceding the round. The reception included a silent and live auction as well as a panel hosted by the voice of the Canadiens, Michel Lacroix. The panel featured Mike Weir, Stephen Ames, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, and Brad Fritsch. The evening was a great success and allowed the Golf Canada Foundation to grant over $115,000 to golf initiatives across the country. 17 Golf Canada Foundation Pro-Am (Canadian Pacific Women's Open) In 2014 the Golf Canada Foundation took control of the Monday Pro-Am at the CP Women s Open. On Monday August 18th, the Pro-Am was held at the London Hunt & Country Club in London, Ontario. Similar to the Foundation Pro-Am at the RBC Canadian Open, the objective of this event was to create awareness and raise funds for programs supported by the Golf Canada Foundation. The Pro-Am was hosted by Lorie Kane and featured the top Canadian female golfers as well as various other Canadian celebrity athletes, including Tessa Virtue and Becky Kellar. There were 19 teams that participated, and the day included a light lunch, gifting stations in the clubhouse, and a full dinner reception at the conclusion of the round. The reception included a silent and live auction as well as a panel hosted by TSN sportscaster Rod Black, featuring Lorie Kane, Brooke Henderson, Sue Kim, Rebecca Lee-Bentham, and Team Canada coach Tristan Mullally. The evening was a tremendous success and raised over $30,000 while increasing awareness of the Foundation in a new city. The Golf Canada Foundation will continue to manage the Monday Pro-Am at the CP Women s Open and is looking forward to hosting the next event at The Vancouver Golf Club in Celebration of Golf (with Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games) The Golf Canada Foundation teamed up with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games to run a fundraising event in Markham, Ontario in The tournament was a junior-am, where groups of three were each teamed up with two players from the inaugural World Junior Girls Championship at the Angus Glen Golf Club. At several holes on the course, Canadian Pan Am and Parapan Am athletes greeted the groups and participated in sport-related activities with the guests. At the round s conclusion participants enjoyed a dinner reception and silent auction. The evening was hosted by CBC sports broadcaster Scott Russell, who also partook in a one-on-one interview on stage with the world s top female amateur golfer, Canadian Brooke Henderson. Chief Executive Officer of TORONTO 2015, Saäd Rafi, also participated in the event and spoke to the audience about the upcoming multi-sport games. The Celebration of Golf Event raised over $60,000 and was a successful pre-cursor to the World Junior Girls Championship later that week. The event built up excitement and enthusiasm for the sport of golf, enhanced guests knowledge of the Golf Canada Foundation, and provided an excellent preview for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Toronto.
