C'est la que fut 6tabli le castrum remain d'argentorate, dont les deux axes principaux ant 6t6 respectes par l'&volution urbaine : la rue des Hallebardes et la rue des Juifs reprennent le trac6 du cardo tandis que la rue du D&e et la.tue du Bain-des- Roses sent deux segments du decumanus. Dans un p6rim;tre restreint, la Grande Ile renferme un ensemble monumental d'une remarquable qualit;. Imm&diatement rep;rables, audessus des hautes toitures i plusieurs Stages de lucarnes, la Cathgdrale, dont la fl;che unique domine la plaine d'alsace, les quatre Gglises anciennes de Saint-Thomas (XIIe-XVe siicle), Saint- Pierre-le-Vieux (XIIIe-XVe siicle), Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune (XIIIe- XVe siicle) et Saint-Etienne (XIIe si;cle) ne sont pas des monument5 isolis mais s'articulent i uu quartier ancien tris reprdsentatif des fonctions de la ville m;di&vale et de 1'6volution de Strasbourg du XVe au XVIIIe siicle. Pour illustrer d'un seul exemple cette coh6rence historique et urbaine, la Cathidrale, il&ment majeur de la proposition d'inscription, est ividemment indissociable de 1'0euvre Notre-Damet institution qui g;rait les fonds &cessaires i sa construction et a son entretien, mais elle n'est pas mains solidaire du Palais Rohan, risidence des Cardinaux-princes-&vGques de cette famille qui le firent gdifier de 1732 i 1742 dans l'axe de la facade sud du transept, ou du collige des Jisuites (actuel 1yc;e Fustel de Coulanges) bgti i son chevet. En difinitive, c'est l'image d'une sociiti chritienne m&di;vale et post-m;di;vale qui imprigne tout le riseau serr6 des rues marchandes et artisanales illustrant l'institution corporative (rue ICOMOS - Hbtel Saint-Algnan. 75. Des idifices publics comme 1'HGtel de Ville de 1585 (aujourd'hui Chambre de Commerce), la Grande Boucherie de la Ville ( , aujourd'hui mus&e historique) coexistent avec des h;telleries (Hotellerie du Cerf), des boutiques et des Gchoppes, des maisons patriciennes (maison Rammerzell et maisons de la rue MerclGre, maisons de la rue du Vieux-March;-aux-Polssons, etc.). i, L'ICOMOS se rgjouit done que la proposition d'inscription soumise par la France ne concerne pas seulement la Cathidrale Notre-Dame, bien culture1 dont la valeur universelle ividente rendait la pr&sentatlon inivitable, mais l'ensemble exceptionnel de la Grande Ile, considgr6 comme un tout. La CathGdrale et la Grande Ile satisfont aux critires I, II et IV. - Critire I. A tous lee stades de sa construction, du Pilier du Jugement Dernier, vets 1230, i l'achivement de la fl;che nord en 1439, la cathidrale gothique de Strasbourg est une r&alisatlon artist;que unique. La fl;che elle-m;me, avec sa structure arachneenne en gr&s rose culminant i 142m, constftue une prouesse technique in&gal&e jusqu'au XIXe siicle. - Critire II. La CathGdrale de Strasbourg a 6t6 le vecteur de l'art gothique en direction de l'est. L'influence considkrable qu'a exercg ce modile sur la statuaire des pays germaniques a pu gtre d;finie selon trois phases successives : influence du Pilier du Jugement Dernier, influence du jub6, influence des portalls de la facade. Mais il ne fauf pas oublier que pour Goethe, Notrz-DaFe de Strasbourg fut la cathedrale gothiqr;le par excellence : grace a lul, elle redevint exemplaire au XIXe siecle, suscitant les folles surencheres &o-gothlques de la fl;che d'ulm ou de la fa9ade de Cologne. :/ i \ - CritGre IV. La "Grande Ile" de Strasbourg offre un exemple iminent d'ensemble urbain caract&ristique de 1'Europe moyenne et un ensemble unique d'architecture domestique rhinane des XVe et XVIe si;cles. It was the site of the Roman castrum of Argentorate, whose two principal axes have been respected by modern urban development. The Rue des Hallebardes and the Rue des Juifs are laid along the cardo while the Rue du Dgme and the Rue du Bain-des-Roses are two segments of the decumanus. Within a small area the Grande Ile contains a remarkable monumental ensemble. Rising above the high-pitched roofs with multi-storied dormer windows, several churches stand out on the skyline. The Cathedral, whose single spire dominates the Alsatian plain, and the four old churches of St. Thomas (12th- 15th century), St. Pierre-le-Vieux (13th-15th century), St. Pierre-le-Jeune (13th-15th century) and St. Etienne (12th century) are more than just isolated monuments. They fit coherently into an old quarter that exemplifies medieval cities and reflects the evolution of Strasbourg from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The Cathedral, which is the principal element of the nomination, illustrates this historic and urban coherence. That it is indissociable from the Oeuvre Notre-Dame, the institution which controlled the funds for its construction and upkeep, is obvious. But it is also closely tied to the Palais Rohan, built by the Rohan family in facing the south end of the transept as a residence for the cardinals, princes and bishops of the.family. Likewise, the Cathedral is closely linked with the College des J&suites (now the Lyc&e Fustel de Coulanges) which adjoins it. ICOMOS - Hbtel Saint-Aignan, 75, rue du Temple Paris. 6 In fact, what emanates from the tight network of streets of shops and craftsmen is the image of medieval and post-medieval Christian society. The street names reflect the guild movement-- Rue des Tonneliers, Rue des Charpentiers, Rue des Ecrivains, Place du March&-aux-Poissons, Place du March;-aux-Cochons-de-Lait, and so forth. Public buildings like the HGtel de Ville (15851, today the Chamber of Commerce, la Grande Boucherie de la Ville ( , now a historic museum, stand alongside inns (HGtellerie du Cerf), boutiques and workshops, as well as elegant town mansions (the Rammerzell house and others in the Rue MerciGre, the rue du Vieux- March&-aux-Poissons, and elsewhere). ICOMOS is delighted that the nomination submitted by France is not limited only to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a cultural property whose obvious universal value made its presentation inevitable, but includes the exceptional ensemble of the Grande Ile, considered as a single unit. The Cathedral and the Grande Ile ensemble satisfy criteria I, II and IV. - Criterion I. In each of its construction stages, from the Pillar of the Last Judgement, ca. 1230, to the completion of the northern spire in 1439, the Gothic Cathedral of Strasbourg is a unique artistic achievement. Soaring to 142 meters, the intricate filigree spire in pink sandstone is in itself a technical feat unequalled until the 19th century. - Criterion II. The Cathedral of Strasbourg represents the eastward vector of the Gothic art movement. The considerable influence which this model exerted on the statuary arts in the Germanic countries can be divided into three successive phases: the influence of the Pillar of the Last Judgement, the influence of the rood-screen, and the influence of the doors of the fagade. It must not be forgotten that Goethe considered Notre-Dame de Strasbourg the Gothic cathedral par excellence. Thanks to him, it once again served as a model in the 19th century, inspiring such extravagant creations as the spires for the Cathedrals of Ulm and Cologne. - Criterion IV. The Grande Ile of Strasbourg is an outstanding example of an urban ensemble characteristic of central Europe and a unique ensemble of domestic architecture in the Rhine valley of the 15th and 16th centuries.
