6 Purpose and Location O 2 project: upgrade of the online and offline computing for the online processing and data volume reduction for ALICE after LS2 (1 TB/s => 50 GB/s sustained) Lab used during the development, the installation and the operation periods of the O 2 project Development ( ) Test of hardware from different vendors Software development Installation ( ) Qualification of the equipment before installation Software development Operation (after 2020) Software development and maintenance Test of new software versions before deployment at the experimental area Test of hardware for the renewal during LS3 All these activities require very frequent interventions in the lab. The lab must therefore be located in the vicinity of the people contributing to the project (Bld 4, 53, 160, 12) September 2015 Pierre Vande Vyvre 6

7 Schedule of the lab The lab has been asked in September 2013 for an availability in January 2016 Total power consumption foreseen ~150 kw Big Challenge: Racks with GPU servers, ~40-50kW electric = heat Initial idea: remodel basement of Bat. 4 Initial studies showed several issues: Cooling systems for racks with high power usage are complex using a classic approach (cold water circuits eau mixte) Difficulty to identify suppliers of high-power racks (only one found Knuerr) Installation will consume a lot of (electrical) energy for cooling; no longer up-to-date in the light of today s green IT movements. Proposed racks no longer fit into the room For cooling reasons the pipes are big, the false floor has to be high, the ceiling is low Security issue with 50 kw rack located in a basement Fresh-Air cooling containers considered as an alternative and recommended by the GS department experts. Noise screens will be deployed to avoid any nuisance. Urgent to have this lab for the overall project schedule (see next slide) Next steps: Identify a location for the container Order of the container and preparatory work for its installation Installation of the container September 2015 Pierre Vande Vyvre 7

Reminder: already 2 years delay since beginning of the project One good candidate is the parking Bat. 108/ 164 Power available Technical galleries available Close to ALICE offices No offices in the immediate vicinity Bat. 108 is a workshop

10 GTPE objections Noise, why not move beside B.602? Noise near B.108 now addressed with noise screens Near B.602 would need some extra concrete and services work Parking reduction? Some parking spaces could actually be created beside B.602 What about production farm? New installation needed in P2 by LS2 Request will be made in the coming weeks

13 Space Requests - Offices Demandes de locaux en cours PH: 1 labo 110 m2 pour Saclay ATLAS NSW, 3 ème trimestre 2015, utilisation pour 18 à 24 mois. PH-DT demande un bureau au Bat 15. PH-SO demande des locaux près du bat 58. Résolu, un bureau alloué au 124 Demande pour E. Auffray de séparer le 27 S-403 en 2 et pouvoir utiliser une moitié en salle laser. En attente travaux GS 1 bureau demandé pour PANDA (RD22), pas urgent. LHCb demande des bureaux supplémentaires autour du bureaux CMS pour ALICE au 161

15 Space Requests - Offices Demandes ou échanges autres départements : DG-RP demande le prêt de 2 labos pour 4 mois (juillet-octobre) au 892-S (réception d équipement et déballage avant installation), En cours, 1 labo rendu et mis à disposition de RE29 Demande de transfert du bat 216 (Pump room) pour dep HR par R. Bray, utilisation exclusive des clubs.

16 Space Requests - Offices Divers : , local INEO vers 879, En attente 275, source ISOLDE vers 508: construction en cours, déménagement d une partie (12/2014 à 01/2015), des locaux sont déjà attribués à AD. 226, locaux libérés par DIRAC et réaménagés pour TOTEM (lab électrique + atelier), en cours. 510, une partie prêtée à CLOUD, l autre à DG (travaux au 2 ème étage bat 60) IT doit rendre le 510 R-010 fin juin, rendu

17 Space Requests - Offices Divers : Le département TE fait une proposition d échange entre le 301/160 et 272, accord signé, gain de 261 m2 pour ALICE. BE a donné les bureaux promis au 588, 130 m 2, ce qui a permis de reloger les personnes du 272 (CMS). Moves finished by end of September

18 Space Requests - Storage Démantèlement GIF au 190 Reste blocs bétons stockés dans le fond du bâtiment, (doivent rester 1 an). Transfert des pièces du 185 vers 190, terminé reste quelques pièces dans la tente 610 à transférer vers le 190.
