2 Golf Canada Foundation Fondation Golf Canada The Golf Canada Foundation was organized in 1979 through the initiative of the Royal Canadian Golf Association. The mandate of the Foundation, a registered Canadian amateur athletic association, is to raise and grant funds for the advancement of golf in Canada. The Foundation has historically delivered this mandate by awarding scholarships to Canadian student golfers and distributing grants to support Canadian university and college golf. In 2013, the Foundation program support was expanded beyond collegiate golf to include women s golf, junior golf, high performance golf, and golf heritage. Money is raised for qualifying programs through fundraising events, the Golf Canada Foundation Trustee program, and other donation campaigns and initiatives. Events The Golf Canada Foundation held three major fundraising events in 2013: the Golf Canada Foundation Monday Pro-Am in July (Oakville, Ontario), the Wine, Women & Shoes event celebrating Women s Golf in August (Edmonton, Alberta), and the Golf Canada Foundation Invitational held in September at Oviinbyrd Golf Club (Muskoka, Ontario). Through Grants As a non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on donations as an essential source of revenue. Tax receipts are issued for all donations. 3 Golf Canada Foundation President's Report Rapport du président de la Fondation Golf Canada The year 2013 saw continued progress in the development of the Golf Canada Foundation s mandate and strategy. Under the guidance of the Board of Directors, CEO Martin Barnard continued to refine the Foundation s framework and goals. The Golf Canada Foundation s mission and vision reflect the following renewed (and expanded) focus: Mission: To provide golfers and industry partners with a charitable platform to increase participation in golf by engaging players of all ages and abilities across Canada. Vision: To become the leading voice of golf philanthropy in Canada. In addition to the maintenance and continued execution of the Foundation s traditional operations and events- namely the scholarship/grant program and golf invitational at Oviinbyrd, the Foundation took great leaps forward in New Events & Initiatives The Foundation held a launch reception in May at the National Club in downtown Toronto, where invited guests were introduced to the Foundation s new strategic plan and Board of Directors while mingling with members of Team Canada and taking in a speech from keynote speaker and RBC President and CEO Gord Nixon. Two brand new fundraising events were added to the Foundation s calendar: the Golf Canada Foundation Pro-Am on the Monday of the RBC Canadian Open at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, and an event to celebrate women s golf which in 2013 was themed Wine, Women, and Shoes and held in Edmonton, Alberta the week prior to the CN Canadian Women s Open. 4 For donors the Foundation initiated a Trustee program in 2013, offering individuals, organizations, and golf clubs the opportunity to partner with the Foundation by providing financial support to grow the game in Canada. Starting at a minimum investment of $5,000 per year, Trustees receive unique access to Canadian golf: events, experiences, access to top players, and partner discounts and offers. With twelve trustees making multi-year commitments in 2013, the program has a successful foundation to grow upon and will continue to have a tremendous impact on the Golf Canada Foundation s ability to help grow the game across the nation. Scholarships/Grants The Golf Canada Foundation continued its longstanding support of collegiate golf in Canada by awarding fourteen scholarships with a combined value of $51,000, and fifteen grants totalling $133,500 were awarded to Canadian college and university golf programs. I would like to thank the Scholarship/Grant committee for their hard work and diligence in organizing and nominating the deserving applicants that received funding in I also wish to thank the Kucey family, Connor/ Spafford families and the Canadian Seniors Golf Association for their continued funding of the scholarships which bear their name. Furthermore, I extend our thanks to the Kanawaki Golf Club, the principle benefactor of the Suzanne Beauregard Scholarships and the New Brunswick Golf Association for the Mary Ellen Driscoll Scholarship. I thank my fellow Directors for their hard work and guidance through a year of growth and development for the Foundation. I appreciate all the time, effort and support that you all have committed to the Foundation, and look forward to en Alberta, une semaine avant l Omnium canadien féminin CN. 6 CEO Report Rapport du chef de la direction 2013 was an important year for the Foundation, made possible by significant donor support and an outstanding Board of Directors. I would like to thank both for supporting the new Foundation vision, and making a significant financial impact on the game in Canada. Financial Performance and Operational Highlights The new fundraising events we took on in 2013 were important to back up the new strategic direction of the Foundation. To promote high performance golf we created a new Pro-Am at the biggest event in Canadian golf, the RBC Canadian Open. Different than any other Pro-Am on the PGA Tour, this event celebrated Canadian golf with the best golfers in the country helping to raise money to develop the next generation of players. To highlight the women s game we held a fantastic fundraiser called Wine, Women, and Shoes that showcased the CN Canadian Women s Open and raised awareness about the benefits of getting more girls and women to take up the game. Another significant development to help the women s game came from Golf Canada donating the more than $700,000 in the Women s Fund to the Foundation to help increase female participation, player development, and coaching. Under the guidance of the Foundation Board and the Women s Fund Committee, we hope to invest and expand our support for the women s game across Canada. 7 the support of our donors and partners. When Canada s top golfers are in contention on the world stage, it gives young children inspiration and heroes to look up to in the sport. With this in mind the Foundation plans to increase its support for Team Canada, working with Golf Canada to create more heroes and help Canada s top men and women bridge the gap between the amateur ranks and the LPGA and PGA Tours. With golf now in the Olympic Games in Rio we want to have as many Canadians as possible competing for a gold medal! A huge thank you to all the donors across Canada who have shown tremendous commitment and support to the building the sport through the Foundation! 8 Scholarship & Grants Committee Report Rapport du Comité des bourses et subventions In 2013 the Foundation received 41 applications, a small increase over the 38 applications in We will continue to focus efforts to ensure prospective recipients are aware of the available scholarships. The Foundation is also starting to spread awareness for scholarships offered by provincial organizations; 2013 was the first year where the foundation advertised these provincial golf scholarships on the application page. In 2013, 14 students were awarded scholarships and the combined value of these awards was $51,000. Once again, it is extremely important to implement a concerted effort to increase awareness across Canada of the scholarships available. The University Grant Fund In 2013, 16 academic institutions submitted applications for their golf programs requesting between $5,000 and $10,000. Fifteen of the sixteen schools that applied received a grant from the Foundation, and a total of $133,500 in grants was distributed to the 15 golf programs. Each grant must also be matched by funding for the golf programs from the school itself. The goal of the grant program for Canadian Universities and Colleges continues to be to provide a viable option for young Canadian golfers to pursue their post-secondary educations in Canada. The program reached approximately 255 students this year, providing scholarships for academics and funds for golf programs at the schools, so that students can continue to play golf while studying and developing as future members of the Canadian business community. 13 Trustee Program Programme de supporteurs In 2013 the Golf Canada Foundation launched a Trustee program. For our most trusted supporters passionate about growing the game in Canada, the Trustee program offers individuals, organizations, and golf clubs the opportunity to partner with the Foundation and help support our areas of impact. Starting at a minimum investment of $5,000 per year, Trustees receive exclusive access to all things Canadian golf: events, experiences, access to top players, and partner discounts and offers. The Golf Canada Foundation Trustee program has experienced a very successful beginning. The Foundation was very excited to announce its first three trustees the Canadian Seniors Golf Association (CSGA), Andrew Cook & Anne Jewett, and the Choquette family. Each Trustee is uniquely helping to support the game across the country through substantial contributions to grassroots programming and scholarship funds. The Trustee program allows individuals and organizations the opportunity to make a significant difference and play an active role in building and growing the sport of golf across the nation. The enthusiasm with which our trustees show their support is very encouraging, and their contributions do not go unnoticed. The first three trustees offered a promising start to the program and they were quickly followed by many more supporters. 14 Golf Canada Foundation Pro-Am Pro-am de la Fondation Golf Canada In 2013 the Golf Canada Foundation took over the Monday Pro-Am at the RBC Canadian Open, which was held on Monday July 22nd, at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ontario. The objective of the Pro-Am was to create awareness and raise funds for Foundation initiatives, in particular a new program in development by Golf Canada to assist emerging Canadian professional golfers in their transition from amateur to pro. The Pro-Am was supported by the sponsors of the RBC Canadian Open and featured the top Canadian golfers, including the five Canadians on the PGA Tour, as well as various other Canadian celebrities. There were 24 teams that participated, and the day included food/cigar stations on-course, gifting stations in the clubhouse, and a full dinner reception at the conclusion of the round. The reception included a silent and live auction as well as a discussion panel hosted by Foundation board member Ian Leggatt, and featuring Mike Weir, Lorie Kane, Stephen Ames, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, and Brad Fritsch. The evening was a great success and allowed the Golf Canada Foundation to grant over $220,000 to golf initiatives across the country. The Golf Canada Foundation will continue to manage the Monday Pro-Am at the RBC Canadian Open and is looking forward to hosting the next event at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2014, in Île-Bizard, Quebec. En 2013, la Fondation Golf Canada a accolé son nom au Pro-am du lundi de l Omnium canadien RBC, tournoi qui a eu lieu du 22 au 28 juillet au Glen Abbey Golf Club (Oakville, ON). Le pro-am avait deux objectifs principaux : sensibiliser le public à la Fondation Golf Canada et collecter des fonds pour diverses initiatives de la Fondation, notamment un programme de Golf Canada actuellement en phase de développement qui aidera les jeunes golfeurs et golfeuses professionnels à opérer une transition en douceur entre les rangs amateurs et les circuits professionnels. Appuyé par les commanditaires de l Omnium canadien RBC, le pro-am a mis en vedette les Canadiens inscrits au tableau du tournoi, y compris les cinq qui évoluent sur le Circuit de la PGA, ainsi que d autres célébrités canadiennes. Vingt-quatre équipes y ont participé. 15 Women s Golf Event Événement de golf féminin The Golf Canada Foundation held our inaugural Edmonton women s golf event on Thursday, August 15th at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald. The event was a tremendous success, thanks in large part to the work of the volunteer committee that organized and managed many aspects of the evening. As the first female president of the RCGA and a board member of the Golf Canada Foundation, I was honoured to head the committee and act as an ambassador to women s golf across Canada. The theme of the evening was Wine, Women & Shoes, and the event was advertised as a fun, unique after-work soiree benefitting golf programs throughout our country. The Foundation managed to sell 156 tickets to the event, which featured a wine tasting, shopping market, fashion show and hors d oeuvres. The event was very successful in recruiting supporters and spreading awareness of the Golf Canada Foundation. Martin Barnard spoke to the crowd to explain the goals and purpose of the Golf Canada Foundation, while I also took a few minutes to speak (and show a video) about the 2013 CN Canadian Women s Open and generate excitement prior to the event. Included in each participant s gift bag was an anyday pass to the CN Canadian Women s Open. Enid Botchett, the Tournament Chair, was also in attendance to promote the event. The feedback from the evening was extremely positive. The women in attendance told us they had fun, enjoyed the festivities, and were happy to contribute to golf (and several who had never swung a golf club are now far more involved in the sport). Many of those who attended have already hinted that they would be happy to come back next year to another Foundation event in the area. La Fondation Golf Canada a présenté son événement inaugural de golf féminin le jeudi 15 août au Fairmont Hotel MacDonald (Edmonton, AB), quelques jours avant la tenue de l Omnium canadien féminin CN. L événement a été très réussi, grâce notamment au dévouement des bénévoles qui ont pris en main plusieurs aspects de la soirée. À titre de première présidente de Golf Canada et membre du Conseil d administration de la Fondation Golf Canada, j ai eu l insigne honneur de diriger le Comité des bénévoles et d agir comme ambassadrice du golf féminin d un bout à l autre du Canada. Sur le thème «Vin, femmes et chaussures», cet événement unique, annoncé comme une «soirée d aprèstravail», s est déroulé à l enseigne du plaisir, au profit de divers programmes de golf à la grandeur du Canada. La Fondation a vendu 156 billets pour cet événement qui comprenait une dégustation de vin, une boutique, un défilé de mode et des hors-d œuvre. Certaines d entre elles, qui n avaient jamais tenu un bâton dans leurs mains, sont maintenant mieux disposées envers le golf. Plusieurs ont indiqué qu elles seraient heureuses de répéter l expérience l an prochain si la Fondation présentait un autre événement du même genre dans la région. 16 Golf Canada Foundation Invitational Tournoi invitation de la Fondation Golf Canada On September 15-16, 2013, the third annual Golf Canada Foundation Invitational took place at Öviinbyrd Golf Club in the Muskoka region north of Toronto. The goal of the Invitational was to raise funds for various grow the game initiatives under the Foundation s mandate. Participants stayed overnight at the Sherwood Inn Resort and were treated to a short game clinic taught by renowned golf instructor Dave Stockton. Sunday night included a fundraising gala at Öviinbyrd, which was followed by a round of golf on Monday at the exclusive Muskoka club. The dinner on Sunday night also included both a silent and live auction and was hosted by TSN sports reporter Cory Woron. Team Canada player Garrett Rank, and women s team coach Tristan Mullally, were also both present for the festivities at Öviinbyrd. A total of 17 groups took part in this year s event, and it was a tremendous success. Approximately $100,000 was raised in support of Canadian golf initiatives by the time play wrapped up on Monday. The Golf Canada Foundation Invitational again provided a great example of just how supportive individuals and organizations are of the Foundation. Congratulations to everyone involved with the Golf Canada Foundation Invitational on a job well done. A great amount of collective time, effort, and expertise went into the organization and execution of the event. We also thank our sponsors, RBC and BMW (the official vehicle supplier of the event), for their involvement and contributions. The Golf Canada Foundation Invitational continues to play an important role as both a source of funding for the Foundation as well as an opportunity to create and foster long-term partnerships with potential supporters.
