Our doctoral schools are committed to the education of future scholars. Our research addresses key issues such as learning and teaching in multilingual and multicultural environments, interactions between health and behaviour, migration and identity, social inequalities, and sustainable development. The Faculty is located on Campus Belval, a former steel industry site in the South of Luxembourg. The Master in European Contemporary History gives the necessary expertise to explore contemporary European issues. With its connections to numerous European institutions and international companies situated in Luxembourg, the master s professional environment is both wide-ranging and stimulating. The aim of the programme is to promote a high-level education in European history and to provide problem-oriented courses addressing questions and issues such as: the political and socio-economic aspects of the European integration and construction process; the construction of social and cultural identity throughout Europe; intra- and extra-european migration and Europe s relations with other global regions. The master s programme puts special emphasis on Digital Humanities and Public History, thus offering a unique blend of historical theory and practical application. Ceux-ci s intéressent aux questions et problématiques constitutives de l histoire européenne telles que : les processus d intégration et de construction européens dans toutes leurs composantes politiques et socioéconomiques ; la construction sociale et culturelle des identités ; les migrations intra- et extra-européennes et les relations entre l Europe et le reste du monde. L apprentissage des humanités numériques et de l histoire publique est au cœur du programme d études, combinant ainsi historique et application pratique. 4 5

4 TRAINING EXPERTS IN DIGITAL HISTORY FORMER DES EXPERTS EN HISTOIRE NUMÉRIQUE The Master in European Contemporary History puts a strong focus on digital history. Through the analysis and classification of digital and digitised source material, the master s programme offers innovative teaching and learning approaches, and the opportunity to conduct research in this still developing sub-field of the digital humanities. Using digital history tools and methodologies, the students learn to transfer and adapt traditional narrating techniques and develop their own ways of telling (hi)stories, both for academic and non-academic audiences. The Digital History Laboratory allows students not only to get in touch with the latest findings and techniques in the area, but to develop their skills, leading to high-quality published projects. One such student project found recognition at the EU level: the Twitter TimeWW1, telling everyday stories of the First World War in 140 characters exactly 100 years after they happened, was awarded first prize at the 2015 European Charlemagne Youth Prize. met l emphase sur l histoire numérique. En travaillant avec des outils et des méthodologies d histoire numérique, les étudiants apprennent à transférer et adapter les techniques de narration traditionnelles et à développer de nouvelles manières de raconter l (es) histoire(s), pour un public académique et non-académique. Le laboratoire d histoire numérique permet aux étudiants de découvrir les dernières connaissances et techniques dans ce domaine, tout en développant des compétences propres, menant à la publication des projets de haute qualité. Un tel projet étudiant a été reconnu au niveau européen: le projet qui raconte les événements quotidiens de la Première Guerre mondiale en 140 caractères 100 ans après que ceux-ci se soient produits. Ce dernier a été récompensé en 2015 par le Prix Charlemagne pour la jeunesse européenne. Practical experience in an international or a European research context (e.g. internships, BA theses) is considered an advantage. 5 TEACHING STRATEGY STRATÉGIE D ENSEIGNEMENT THE PROGRAMME AT A GLANCE APERÇU DU PROGRAMME The master s programme functions in a multicultural European and multilingual teaching and learning environment. Students can either specialise in European history in the long term or History of the European integration process. The distinguished teaching staff provides firstclass learning conditions and excellent student support. Courses are taught in small classes, seminar groups, and as one-to-one tutorials. Students benefit from close co-operation with other master s programmes in European Studies and the newly established Jean Monnet Centre of Excellece. A series of conferences are given by international experts and key players who have helped shape Europe, and often have close connections to the Luxembourg-based European institutions. I chose the Master in European Contemporary History in order to complement my Bachelor in European Cultures. One great aspect of this programme is the opportunity to choose between either studying Europe throughout its entire history (from antiquity until today), or only focusing on the process of European integration. I chose the latter, thus looking at EU history from an economic, political, social, and cultural perspective. The different approaches and the wide range of topics that we address in seminars give us a profound understanding of EU mechanisms, and of the European integration processes in general. As a student of this master s programme, one gets to participate in a number of very interesting projects, such Such projects and the recently established Digital History Lab enable us students to leave the ivory tower of historical research, and to develop our own strategies of presentation for a wider public. This is a challenging but very interesting master s programme which, I am convinced, opens great career opportunities.
