1 (Please find the French version below) MANAGING DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL COHESION: THE CANADIAN EXPERIENCE 5 TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN CANADIANISTS SOFIA, BULGARIA OCTOBER 2009 First Announcement and Call for Papers The Central European Association for Canadian Studies is pleased to announce its 5 th Triennial International Conference to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from October in conjunction with Sofia University and New Bulgarian University. We are pleased to announce the following keynote speakers: Professor Keith Banting, Research Chair in Public Policy, Queens University, Kingston Professor Chelva Kanaganayakam, Professor of English and Director, Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Toronto Professor Lise Gauvin, Writer, Professor of Literature, Université de Montréal Thibault Martin, Responsable des programmes de deuxième cycle en développement régional, Département de travail social et des sciences sociales, Université du Québec en Outaouais The theme of the conference is intended to reflect one of Canada s central strengths. This strength is the remarkable way in which, though a country marked by unusual diversity linguistic, cultural, ethnic, regional and political, to name only the most obvious it has nevertheless been able to contain these dynamic forces within a state of creative tension that has shaped the society as a whole. Taking this as our starting point, we invite individual papers from a wide variety of disciplines dealing with all aspects of the study of Canada, including but not limited to topics such as:

2 - Cultural diversity - Democratic processes and human rights - Social cohesion - Canadian polity - Social diversity in Canadian literature - Emigrant writing - The city in literature - Intercultural dialogues in literature - Canadian cultural narratives - Cultural regionalism - A nation in the making: historical perspectives Interdisciplinary papers are especially welcome. Presentations will be 20 minutes with an additional 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The conference registration form, along with abstracts of papers (maximum 250 words) and a one-paragraph CV for those planning to deliver papers, should be submitted by to the organizers by 5 April Selected papers from the conference will be published in a separate volume. CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEE The conference registration fees quoted below include the following: Admission to all sessions Accommodation (including breakfasts) for three nights (15-17 October) Reception (16 October), final dinner (17 October), morning and afternoon coffee breaks October); lunches will be the participants responsibility Conference proceedings Early-bird registration fee (until 5 September 2009) Registration fee after 5 September 2009 (including on-site registration) Members of CEACS Non-members Students 40 60

Prenant ce phénomène en tant que point de départ, nous vous invitons à participer avec des communications de tous les domaines de spécialisation traitant tous les aspects de la société canadienne. Parmi les sujets possibles : - Diversité culturelle. - Démocratie et droits de l homme.

6 - Cohésion sociale. - Politique candienne. - Diversité sociale dans la littérature canadienne. - L écriture migrante. - L image de la ville dans la littérature candienne. - Dialogues interculturels dans la littérature. - Régionalisme culturel. - L intégrité de la nation: perspectives historiques. Des communications interdisciplinaires sont cordialement conviées. Les communications ne devraient pas dépasser la durée maximale de 20 minutes, complétées de 10 minutes de discussion et pourraient être prononcées en anglais ou en français. Le formulaire d inscription accompagné d un résumé de votre communication (maximum 250 mots), ainsi qu un CV de quelques lignes devront nous parvenir avant le 5 avril 2009 par courriel. Les communications sélectionnées seront publiées dans les Actes du colloque.
