6 Editorial Dear AMPERE colleagues, with this first issue from Konstanz I take the responsibility for the Bulletin du Groupement AMPERE. You will find that the layout is basically unchanged and that the information on past and future conferences still forms an important part of the Bulletin. As a service to our members we want to supplement information on forthcoming AMPERE events by short announcements on other conferences related to the fields of interest of our Society. You are invited to submit such announcements, like the one on the Zavoisky100 conference on pages of this issue, through our address ampere@nmr.phys.cheme.ethz.ch. AMPERE Society has grown larger since the past issue of the Bulletin. It is a great pleasure for me to announce that the European Federation of EPR groups, EFEPR ( has joined AMPERE as a new division. AMPERE has thus truly become an umbrella for virtually all magnetic resonance and rf spectroscopy activities in Europe. As a first manifestation of the deeper involvement of EPR groups in the AMPERE society the EUROMAR congress this July in Tarragona (see Bulletin 223) features a satellite meeting of the EPR groups organized in the COST P15 action Advanced Paramagnetic Resonance Methods in Molecular Biophysics and a tutorial session that addresses the interface between EPR and NMR. 7 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the AMPERE NMR Summer School 2007 I have a pleasure to invite you to take part in this scientific event, which brings together NMR specialists and young scientists interested in using NMR techniques. The international reputation of the NMR School is guaranteed by having the auspices of the Groupement AMPERE. This year the school will take place in Bukowina Tatrzańska (near Zakopane, Tatra Mountains, Poland), from 24 th to 30 th of June. The Programme covers Multi Quantum NMR, Multi Dimensional NMR, Diffusion, Relaxation, NMR imaging and Application of NMR to Soft Materials. 12 16 th - 21 st July 2006 York, England Report on the EUROMAR 2006 conference The successful EUROMAR 2006 conference was held at the University of York in the UK and organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry NMR Discussion Group and under the auspices of GROUPEMENT AMPERE. This was the first new pan European conference on Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and attracted 438 delegates. It replaced the British NMR Discussion Group s International Meetings, the biannual Congress AMPERE and EENC Meetings. It followed the two transitional meetings in Lille 2004 and Veldhoven 2005 and catered for all parties interested in magnetic resonance. A EUROMAR Board of Trustees has been formed to oversee the new series of conferences and this was the first one arranged with their guidance, ( The Programme was organised by the following team of ten scientists and covered the listed set of topics in dedicated plenary lectures and parallel sessions: Geoffrey Bodenhausen Kevin Brindle Janez Dolinsek Simon Duckett Duncan Farrant Daniella Goldfarb Malcolm Levitt Beat Meier David Neuhaus Jeremy Titman Frontiers Imaging Solid State Physics Catalysis Pharmaceutical Applications Paramagnetic Systems High Sensitivity Magnetic Resonance Bio-Solids Bio-Macromolecules Methods in Solids The conference lectures commenced on Sunday 16 th July 2006 with the EUROMAR Medal Lecture by Sir Peter Mansfield. From Monday 17 th July through to Friday 21 st July, there were a total of 10 plenary lectures, one for each topic, held in a joint session at the start of each morning. In parallel sessions, a further 18 plenary lectures and 54 contributed talks were presented, several by students, three of whom each received a prize from the publishers Wiley. In addition 3 prize winning talks were presented on the Tuesday evening. The AMPERE Prize lecture delivered by Professor Maurice Goldman, the Raymond Andrew Prize lecture by Dr Carlos Mattea and the Russell Varian Prize lecture by Professor John Waugh. There were 188 high quality posters presented over two of the afternoon sessions, in addition to many informative exhibitor displays by the MR vendors. Professor Simon Duckett was the leader of the excellent team of local organisers from the University of York. They successfully arranged and conducted the smooth running of all conference proceedings. With excellent weather conditions for the week, these were held in the Central Hall and Exhibition Centre situated around a wildlife sanctuary lake. Together with the Conference Secretariat, lead by Mrs Elaine Wellingham, they organised a well balanced social programme, that included hospitality suites by the major vendors during each evening of the conference and six excursions to interesting sites in Yorkshire on the Wednesday afternoon and evening. The splendid conference dinner was held at the National Railway Museum in the centre of York on the Thursday evening, with a welcoming brass band entertaining delegates amongst the classic locomotives. The 438 scientists who attended the conference came from 37 countries. There were 26 companies that assisted both by sponsoring 78 students attendance and by arranging display stands explaining their particular expertise. 13 Final Report The 6 th Colloquium on Mobile Magnetic Resonance CMMR6 (Specialized Colloque Ampere) September 6-8, 2006 in Aachen, Germany The Colloquium on Mobile Magnetic Resonance (CMMR) is an annual meeting, which originates from workshops and summer schools. However, it is shaping more and more into an international conference as recognizable from being a specialized Colloque Ampere (Groupment Ampere) in 2006, which was organized by the Research Center Jülich (Peter Blümler as chair and Dagmar van Dusschoten)in close collaboration with ITMC (Bernhard Blümich and Federico Casanova) of RWTH Aachen-University The objectives of the CMMR are: to communicate progress, developements and applications of mobile Magnetic Resonance (NMR, EPR and NQR), and to promote "hands-on understanding" in the form of educational lectures and practical sessions on mobile MR equipment. 14 The CMMR6 was attended by 73 external participants and 40 members of the hosting institutions. The scientific program enclosed ca. 30 talks and 20 posters. Particularly the inclusion of vendors in the scientific program and the educational workshop (practical examples on mobile NMR equipment) were again highly appreciated by the attendees and received overwhelming participance. The conference dinner was hold in the cellar of the historic city hall of Aachen, which has a very nice and informal atmosphere. The organizers want to acknowledge the substantial financial and personal support form the Research Center Jülich. 15 F I N A L R E P O R T The Specialized Colloque AMPERE and AvH-Workshop: Advanced Materials as Studied by Spectroscopic and Diffraction Techniques was organised from 16 th to 21 st of September 2006 by Vilnius University (Lithuania) in collaboration with the Darmstadt University of Technology and the Leipzig University (Germany) as a part of joint research projects sponsored by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Colloque was attended by 62 registered participants form Lithuania and other countries: Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Russia, Latvia and others. The scientific work presented during the Colloque in 70 selected contributions according to the traditions of the AMPERE Conferences (29 lectures and 41 poster) covered the following topics: Structure and phase transitions; Intermolecular and molecular-ionic interactions in aqueous and ionic solutions; Nanostructures and porous media; Biological systems; Advanced materials; Dielectric, NMR, ESR, vibrational and optical spectroscopy; Light, X-ray and neutron scatterings; Modern theoretical calculations (quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, etc). The opening ceremony was started by a cordial speeches given by Prof., Dr. Habil. B. Juodka, Rector of Vilnius University and Dirk Roland Haupt, Representative of the German Embassy. The opening lecture was delivered Prof., Dr. Habil. J.V. Vaitkus, Pro-rector of Vilnius University. The official opening of the Colloque was done by the member of the AMPERE Bureau Prof. R. Blinc. The scientific programme consisted of 11 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. The main lectures were given by H. Fuss, R. Blinc, D. Michel, G. Völkel, K.P. Dinse, R.A. Eichel, H.H. Limbach, M. Suhm and etc. The review lectures were delivered by the Lithuanian scientists: J. Banys and J. Grigas. AMPERE Bulletin No. 224/225 12

16 The Book of Extended Abstracts and the Programme was distributed to all participants of the Colloque. A selected number of full papers will be published in Journal of Applied Magnetic Resonance, Phase Transitions and Lithuanian Journal of Physics. The Deputy Editor of the Journal of Applied Magnetic Resonance Dr. L. Mosina participated in the Colloque and collected some papers. The scientific sessions were complemented by a full programme of the social events including one-day guided excursion in Klaip da and Nida (at the Baltic sea). The last day there was devoted to an extremely interesting scientific discussion Quo vadis material science. The local organisers (Chairman Prof. J. Banys, Secretary Prof. V. Balevičius) wish to thank the Vilnius University for enabling us to organise the Colloque AMPERE and AvH-Workshop in Lithuania. The organisers are grateful for financial support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Research and Studies Foundation of Lithuania. The Colloque AMPERE and AvH-Workshop, the organisers believe, was successful thanks to the high activity of all the participants and the chairmens of the sessions, the high standard of all lectures and posters and, finally, active interactions through personal and group discussions.
