Courses descriptions Accounting - Semester 3 TAACO206 Intermediate Financial Accounting 1 After exploring the general structure of financial statements, Intermediate Accounting 1 builds on the student s basic accounting knowledge and provides them with the skills to prepare the asset portion of a balance sheet and account for revenue streams on the income statement. Topics are explored in the context of current generally accepted accounting principles and IFRS practices. TAACO211 Intermediate Managerial Accounting 1 This course includes a comprehensive study of cost accounting fundamentals and an indepth look at some of the tools that management accountants use for planning and control. The following topics will be covered: The management accountant s role in strategic decision making, cost classification and the impact of these costs on the financial statements, using cost-volume-profit as a decision making tool, the allocation of overhead costs to cost objects, the preparation of budgeted financial statements, and in-depth variance analysis of revenues and costs. The course covers IT systems planning, decisionmaking and problem solving at operational, tactical and strategic levels. Students will also develop the ability to analyze IT investments, assess benefits and risks, and reasonably align IT investments with broader organizational goals. With a focus on business processes, the course explores strategic enterprise IT applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), Accounting and Human Resource applications through exposure to SAP application. In addition, specialized areas such as relevant IFRS, earnings per share, income taxes, pensions, leases, changes in accounting methods, accounting errors, disclosure and reporting, and Statement of Cash Flows will also be explored. Constitutional law, including an analysis of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, follows. Human rights legislation is similarly evaluated from a business perspective. The Alberta court system is contrasted with

9 various forms of alternative dispute resolution. Students learn how to conduct civil actions in Provincial Court, Civil. Tort law is examined to identify the potential liabilities businesses may face. Insurance law and contract law are likewise studied from a risk management perspective. The course concludes with employment law, including the common law and the relevant legislation. Students research the macroeconomic influences and business fundamentals that create value and the models used to price financial securities. The dynamics of the markets are studied continuously to analyze the performance of investments and to develop strategies for constructing investment portfolios. A foundation to the world of investing is established. TAACO212 Intermediate Managerial Accounting II This focus of this course is on learning how to apply various cost management techniques. These include: alternative inventory costing; estimating cost functions; relevant costing; cost allocation; and process costing. The application of these techniques will center on determining how they impact management decision making.

You will become familiar with issues and practices affecting this dynamic industry TAAFI252 Credit/Financial Analysis Credit will cover the practical applications of consumer, commercial and mercantile credit. of accounts receivable, collections and bankruptcy will be examined to give students the up-to-date design of the credit industry. Credit analysis as done by lenders will be diagramed with a view to aid the student in preparing credit proposals for small businesses. ELECTIVE (1/3) TAAFI281 Stock Market Simulation In this simulation students will participate in a real time, global simulation that will blend Modern Portfolio/Fundamental/Technical Analyses while students trade a broad range of financial securities. Students will measure, report and manage an investment portfolio to preserve capital and to maximize returns. TAAFI312 Taxation for Financial Planning Taxation for Financial Planning will provide students with an overview of the fundamental principles, concepts, and applications of Canadian federal income tax legislation for individual taxpayers and small business owners. Topics include the concepts of income and liability for tax, personal taxation, capital cost allowance, income attribution, capital gains and losses, and alternative minimum tax. TAAFI335 Canadian Securities Courses This is an intensive investment course that prepares the student for exams I & II of the Canadian Securities Course. In the first part of the course, students will focus on such topics as capital markets, the Canadian economy, listing and regulation, financial statements, fixed income securities, equities, and derivatives. The second part of this course extends this knowledge into Fundamental and Technical Analysis, Modern Portfolio Theory and Managed Funds. TAAMK271 Professional Selling Principles This course examines the role of personal selling in the company's strategy, including models of communication and methods of selling. A primary focus is the development of applied selling skills that focuses on the attitudes and behaviours of successful sales people. Students will practice selling through role plays and will also be given the opportunity to expand their network through interviews with marketing professionals. TAAMG276 Promotional This course introduces students to modern promotional management. It focuses on the practice and principles of Advertising, Public Relations, and Sales Promotion in the context of integrated marketing communications. This course is a core course for the Program. TAAMG256 Introduction to Strategic Introduction to Strategic concentrates on the first phase of the strategic management process Strategic Analysis. In this phase the ability to conduct a thorough Situational Analysis is critical. To this end the associated theory and analytical tools are emphasized; this also includes a review of financial analysis methodologies. Additionally students are introduced to a business simulation designed to provide the opportunity to apply the acquired analytical skills as well as to integrate the course s Strategic theory. The business simulation s sophistication also allows the incorporation of learning from a host of other business courses.
