2 You are advised to spend 45 minutes answering the questions in this booklet. QUESTION ONE: PARIS JOURNAL Last year a group of New Zealand students were lucky enough to go on a school trip to Paris. Their French teacher required them to keep a journal in French, so that they could record their impressions. Read Phillip s journal below. Answer in English the questions about the journal entry in the spaces provided. Full sentence answers are not required. You will be rewarded for providing: Note: la Joconde = Mona Lisa all the information requested le centre commercial = shopping centre detailed answers. (a) Give the date and time of Phillip s arrival in Paris. (b) How was the group feeling after their arrival and why? (c) Give TWO details to show that there were no problems on their arrival. (1) (2)

3 (d) How was Phillip feeling on the day he wrote this journal entry? (e) What was the reason for this? (f) List THREE factors contributing to Phillip s good mood that morning. (1) (2) (3) (g) Explain the one negative aspect of the morning. (h) What is unusual about Le Forum des Halles? (i) Why was Phillip pleased with his purchases there?

4 QUESTION TWO: SAMANTHA S JOURNAL Now read Samantha s journal entry. Answer in English the questions that follow. Use the spaces provided. Full sentence answers are not required. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested detailed answers. Paris, le 26 septembre J adore Paris! Surtout manger ici! (a) What particularly impresses Samantha about Paris? (b) What does Samantha s breakfast begin with at the hotel? (c) What comparison does she make with her normal breakfast? (d) What does Samantha write in her first sentence about cafés?

5 (e) Summarise what Samantha finds so enjoyable about eating in a café. Give THREE points. (1) (2) (3) (f) What does she write about the chips? (g) What does she not like about French cafés?

6 QUESTION THREE: UNDERSTANDING TICKETS Some samples of tickets the students picked up while visiting Paris are shown below. Look at them closely. Answer in English the questions that follow. Use the spaces provided. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested detailed answers. Théâtre Contemporain = contemporary theatre SNCF RATP Paris-S- Urbaine Aéro. Orly RER C U cl (a) What sort of transport was this ticket used on? How do you know? ,75 Théâtre Contemporain Comédie musicale NOTRE DAME DE PARIS. lundi 30 septembre ,00 20h30 (b) What FOUR pieces of information does this ticket give?
