DAYCARE PROGRAM The programme Educators in Native and Inuit Childcare Services is a college training program which is 1,455 hours in total and has credits. The program uses a competency-based approach, and there are 18 courses in all. It enables students to qualify to become Educators in early childhood centres in the indigenous communities of Canada. This program is recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Families and the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports. The Quaqtaq training was provided by teacher Patricia Falope and facilitator/translator Annie Tukkiapik (Goguen), who also participated as a student in the program. The competency Foster Inuit values and culture in child-care services was taught by Eva Deer, a local elder. The training took place over a period of 15 months, between September 4, 2007 and December 10, Four students graduated from the Program. The Inukjuak training was provided by teacher Denise Ouellet and facilitator/translator Elsie Kasudluak, who also participated as a student in the program. DISTANCE EDUCATION Distance Education is designed for people who cannot attend our general education centres. Our main goals are: to allow everyone to pursue their secondary studies; to follow the required courses, prior to vocational or college studies to review secondary courses or programs We try to offer a variety of programs and the necessary teacher support during prescribed days and hours. Students can enroll in several courses during the year, at anytime, but they can t be registered in more than two courses at a time. There were 35 students enrolled in our program during the school year. They came from all over Nunavik. They were mostly employees of various northern organizations and NVs. We also had stay-at- home parents studying with us, as well as students who do not have a General Education Centre in their community or one in the language they studied in. ENSEIGNEMENT À DISTANCE L enseignement à distance s adresse aux personnes qui ne sont pas en mesure de fréquenter nos centres de formation générale. Nos principaux objectifs sont les suivants : permettre à chacun de poursuivre ses études secondaires; suivre les cours requis, avant les études professionnelles ou collégiales; étudier les cours ou programmes secondaires. Nous essayons de proposer une variété de programmes ainsi que le soutien pédagogique nécessaire durant les journées et les heures prescrites. Les élèves peuvent, à tout moment, s inscrire à plusieurs cours durant l année, mais à pas plus de deux cours à la fois. 35 élèves se sont inscrits à notre programme au cours de l année scolaire Venus des quatre coins du Nunavik, ils étaient principalement des employés de divers organismes et villages nordiques. Nous avons eu également des parents au foyer qui ont étudié avec nous, ainsi que des élèves qui n ont pas de centre de formation générale dans leur communauté ou qui n en ont pas un dans la langue dans laquelle ils ont étudié. 164

KAJUSIVIK ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE, KUUJJUAQ The Kajusivik Centre offers a Light Vehicle Mechanics Program as well as an Automobile Mechanics Program. There are currently eight students in each two-year program. In the Light Vehicle Mechanics Program, students learn how to repair ski-doos, ATVs, out-board motors, ice-joggers, chainsaws, and snow-blowers. In the Automobile Mechanics Program, students learn how to repair engines on light vehicles, trucks, cars, and computerized machinery. These Programs are open to all. OUTDOOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The focus of this program is to bring young adults back on the land in order to transfer the skills and knowledge that encompass the traditional way of Inuit life. Superbly located on a hill overlooking the Hudson Bay and the village of Inukjuak, the Adult and Vocational Education Centre Nunavimmi Pigiursavik has been welcoming students from all around Nunavik for over a decade. Although the Centre s main mission is to lead its students to the obtaining of a Secondary School Diploma or a Diploma of Vocational Studies, Nunavimmi Pigiursavik represents more than just a school, it is also a place to live. With a residence equipped with all the necessary amenities, including a cafeteria which can serve up to 80 people, Nunavimmi Pigiursavik can host single students, couples and families in its 26 housing units. In addition, students have the possibility to live with host families in Inukjuak, and the Centre s shuttle bus service is truly appreciated by all the students. Furthermore, different activities are offered, not only at the residence, but at the school itself, and the trade classes are often centered on practical training in the community. A stronger link between the Centre and the community of Inukjuak is now one of the main priorities of Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. Whether you want to complete your secondary studies or initiate a new career, the choices are numerous and various at Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. Throughout the years, the Centre has produced graduates of all ages in Accounting, Secretarial Studies, Computer Technology, Jewellery, Hairdressing, Professional Cooking, Carpentry, Electricity, Plumbing, Small Appliance Repair, Mechanics, and in several other fields. The school year was no exception. It offered a wide selection of interesting programs: Desktop Publishing (Computer Graphic Design), Computer Support, Northern Building Maintenance, Electricity, Plumbing and Heating, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, and Jewellery, and the general programs of English and French Upgrading NUNAVIMMI PIGIURSAVIK : TON ÉDUCATION, TON MÉTIER, TON AVENIR! The students often offer their services to the community of Inukjuak by acting as translators and interpreters when professionals from outside of Nunavik come to work in the region. For instance, the students can assist court members, Hydro-Quebec employees, medical personnel, teachers from the south when they meet with parents, etc. Events needing translation services at a professional level are numerous in Nunavik, and for the students registered in the Translation and Interpretation Program, there is no lack of work! TRADUCTION ET INTERPRÉTATION (ANGLAIS-INUKTITUT) Les élèves inscrits au programme de Traduction et interprétation en inuktitut, un cours de 1440 heures, ont de multiples occasions de mettre en pratique ce qu ils apprennent en classe. DESKTOP PUBLISHING The Desktop Publishing Program started in January Since then, the students registered in this 1,800-hour program have had the opportunity to show their talents throughout Nunavik by participating in numerous projects. Early in 2007, drawings made by students were published in the Makivik News and the magazine ordered the creation of an illustration to represent Rhoda Inukpuk, Inuit Woman of the Year. The school year as a whole was a truly productive one in terms of projects and orders. For example, the students of the program, along with the ones in the Professional Cooking course taught at the Centre at the time, published a cookbook based on the use of traditional Nunavik food. In addition, the students helped the Regional Board of Health and Social Services to bring out their own cookbook, also including recipes inspired by Nunavik products. Furthermore, the students participated in several additional projects. For the Kativik School Board, they produced the official Christmas card used in December 2007, and the logo for the hip hop project in Nunavik. COMPUTER SUPPORT The students from the Computer Support Program put their knowledge to use for the benefit of the community of Inukjuak. The residents of the village can refer to them for the installation of their satellite dishes, for the repairs on their personal computers, and for the complete installation of High-Speed Internet (with the installation of the dish to receive the signal). All these services are offered at an inexpensive rate, with the money used for and by the students in the context of their course. In addition, inside the Centre s walls, the students got a computer laboratory off the ground, and they created a Web page for their course. SOUTIEN INFORMATIQUE Les élèves du programme de soutien informatique mettent leurs connaissances au service de la communauté d Inukjuak. En effet, les résidents du village peuvent faire appel à leurs services pour l installation de leurs antennes paraboliques, pour la réparation de leurs ordinateurs personnels et pour l installation complète de réseaux Internet «haute vitesse» (avec installation de l antenne parabolique pour la réception du signal). This was a truly gratifying experience for the students! This fall, they also participated in the construction of the new workshop for the Jewellery course. INTERIOR SYSTEMS AND NORTHERN BUILDING MAINTENANCE From January to June 2008, Nunavimmi Pigiursavik offered a 645-hour Interior Systems Program. The students got the chance to learn a part of their trade in the field, in the context of in-service training, by offering their contribution to the renovations to be done in the new offices of the Unaaq Men s Association. From March to June, they did many tasks: they redid the whole ceiling of the building as well as the interior divisions, along with the interior covering of the Association s new rooms. The students also offered their services to the janitors of Nunavimmi Pigiursavik, for whom they custom built a large cupboard so they could store some of their cleaning tools. Finally, among the special projects undertaken by the students, they got some practice in the creation of commercial shop decorative face walls by building one on a work cubicle at Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. A new 1,320-hour Northern Building Maintenance Program was offered this past school year. The teacher and the students were approached to help in a project of the Regional Board of Health and Social Services called The Family House. In addition, they took part in the modifications and the renovations of the workshop where the Jewellery class was held. POSE DE SYSTÈMES INTÉRIEURS ET ENTRETIEN DE BÂTIMENTS NORDIQUES De janvier à juin 2008, le centre Nunavimmi Pigiursavik a offert un programme intitulé Pose de systèmes intérieurs d une durée de 645 heures. Les élèves inscrits au programme ont eu la chance d apprendre une partie de leur métier «sur le terrain» en contribuant aux rénovations du nouveau siège de l Unaaq, l Association des hommes d Inukjuak, dans le cadre d un projet de formation pratique. À divers moments, sur une période s étalant de mars à juin, ils ont participé à plusieurs travaux : ils ont refait tout le plafond de la bâtisse, les divisions intérieures, ainsi que le recouvrement intérieur des nouveaux locaux de l Association. Les élèves du cours de Pose de systèmes intérieurs ont également offert leurs services aux concierges du centre Nunavimmi Pigiursavik en créant, à leur intention, un grand placard, afin qu ils puissent y ranger certains outils de travail. Finalement, parmi les réalisations particulières des élèves, notons qu ils ont pu s exercer à la création d une devanture commerciale sur l une des structures de travail mises à leur disposition dans les locaux de Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. PLUMBING AND HEATING Since August 2007, Nunavimmi Pigiursavik has offered a course of 1,500 hours leading to a Diploma of Vocational Studies in Plumbing and Heating. The students registered during the school year participated in several in-service training projects in order to help different organizations in Inukjuak. The students installed a warm air system, a sewage tank, a pipe system for water (cold and hot), and a drinkable water tank, along with the whole bathroom in the new Unaaq Men s Association building. Furthermore, the students offered their support to the Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau by doing in-service training in plumbing inside some houses in the community. They repaired toilets, sinks, basins, and drinkable water systems. Finally, the Kativik School Board also offered some in-service training to the students by asking them to repair a broken urinal at Innalik School in Inukjuak, and to make some adjustments in a few houses. In addition, the students went to Akulivik to help the maintenance team after a heating breakdown caused damage in the pipe system at Tukisiniarvik School. The students also participated in the construction of Nunavimmi Pigiursavik s Jewellery workshop. PLOMBERIE-CHAUFFAGE Depuis août 2007, le centre Nunavimmi Pigiursavik offre une formation de 1500 heures aboutissant à un Diplôme d études professionnelles en Plomberie-chauffage. Les élèves inscrits au cours durant l année scolaire ont participé à divers stages pratiques, afin de venir en aide à différents organismes de la communauté d Inukjuak. Les élèves ont en effet installé un système à air chaud, un réservoir d eaux usées, un système de tuyauterie pour l eau (froide et chaude), un réservoir d eau potable, ainsi que toute la salle de bain, dans le nouveau bâtiment de l Unaaq, l Association des hommes d Inukjuak. De plus, les élèves ont offert leur soutien à l Office municipal d habitation Kativik en travaillant à des stages pratiques de plomberie dans les résidences de la communauté. Ils ont ainsi réparé des toilettes, des éviers, des lavabos et des systèmes d eau potable. Finalement, la Commission scolaire Kativik a elle aussi offert quelques stages en «milieu de travail» aux élèves, en les appelant à remettre en état un urinoir défectueux à l école Innalik d Inukjuak, ainsi qu à effectuer différentes réparations dans certaines maisons. De plus, à la suite à une panne de chauffage à l école Tukisiniarvik d Akulivik causée par des tuyaux endommagés, les élèves ont été dépêchés sur les lieux afin de venir en aide aux employés de la maintenance. Les élèves ont également participé à la construction de l atelier de joaillerie de Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. 174

HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANICS The Heavy Equipment Mechanics program, an 1,800-hour course, has been offered for many years at Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. In the last four years, the students have repaired, among other equipment, a Volvo A20 articulated truck which had been given to them by the Makivik Corporation. The repairs made on the vehicle include a rebuilt engine; new brakes, wheels, axles, transmission, and differential; and the vehicle has been entirely repainted. From now on, this truck will used as a reference model for future students. The students also repaired other heavy equipment in order to get some practice on real machines. For instance, they replaced the engine and the hydraulic pump on a wheel loader bought for the students by the course administrators, and several repairs were done on a bulldozer: the engine, the traction, the cylinder and the dozer blade were refurbished, the cutting edge was replaced, and the pins and bushings were redone. Finally, the students worked in making as good as new a used small wheel loader, also bought especially for the course. MÉCANIQUE DE MACHINERIE LOURDE Le programme de Mécanique de machinerie lourde, un cours de 1800 heures, est offert depuis plusieurs années au centre Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. Dans les quatre dernières années, les élèves ont, entre autres choses, réparé un camion articulé Volvo A20 qui leur avait été donné par la Corporation Makivik. There you see mountains, rocks and sky, to name a few things. In the mountains you can feel a cool breeze and wind through your skin. See a view that is well structured; see the land as far as your eyes can see; nothing but land, mountains, plants and water. Smell the fresh air, where you do not smell the fumes of any transportation, the smell of cooking or the smell of sewage. There are all kinds of rocks, from small pebbles to lichen covered boulders. Walking through a rocky land is like hopping like a bunny; you can hear your footsteps that sound like you are tap dancing. When it rains it gets slippery, and if you feel something mushy and gooey, you are walking on the plants. In any part of land or sea in our world you see a blue sky. At day time you see a sun sometimes hiding in the clouds. At night you see a moon that is surrounded by stars that can tell you where you are if you travel at night. What could be more peaceful than that? Nothing in towns or cities would ever be this peaceful. In sky scrapers you can imagine being on a mountain, but it is not the same; walking on cement is not like walking on the land. The sky is always there, but you barely see the stars at night because of the lights in the cities. 178

Dominick said that I should go and take some pictures, and Laurie-Anne said I could ride with her on her Honda (ATV). As we were leaving, Gideon Eames, a teacher, came out of his classroom and asked to join us on our adventure. I went to my house to get a warmer jacket, Laurie-Anne went to get air in the tires and Gideon ran to his place for warm clothes. We all met on the corner ten minutes later, and as I climbed on board, I whispered to Laurie-Anne that I had never been on an ATV before. I was happy to have the warmer jacket for the adventure, and as Gideon and Laurie- Anne joked and laughed, I told myself I would not fall off and crack my skull. Down the road a ways my hat flew off my head, but Laurie-Anne turned around and went back for it. When we arrived at the dock, the boat that I had seen moor there the day before was still alongside. There were about fifty people and an assortment of vehicles in the area, and the ground on the dock alongside the boat was covered in thick layers of waxed cardboard. There were mounds of walrus flesh (aiviq), over which crouched Inuit men and women, cutting expertly with long bladed knives, ulus and cleavers. As the flesh quivered and rolled, strong hands cut chunks and passed them to community members. The mounds were the colour of blood; thick, clotted and fat free, the layer of fat having been isolated under the brown, rough flesh. Skilful hands rolled larger chunks into roasts stitched with green twine and a fashioned handle, and they were carried in either hand and set aside. As the meat disappeared, more chunks of carcass were hooked and winched from the boat to the waiting crowd. Strong, lined, generous hands received the meat. Faces both old and lined and young and vibrant were observing and partaking of the blessed bounty of the hunt. I noted as a positive symbol that Diana, Goddess of the Hunt, was present on a mother s lime green amautik, baby in her hood across her back, the tails of her coat resembling angels wings trailing down her back to a foot above the ground. Community members came with heavy duty plastic bags and plastic containers. It was a lively and a colourful scene: yellow latex gloves, flowered kerchiefs, colourful pompoms bobbing on crocheted hats and bright coloured jackets. Leaning over the mounds of fresh walrus, the colour of clotted blood, Inuks smiled and chatted amongst themselves, willingly cutting pieces of meat for the qallunaat (non-inuit) to try. I asked a woman, which parts are the best tasting? She replied, smiling, it is all best! I pointed to a piece of bright red, shiny flesh and nodded. A man cut the morsel with a large, shiny blade and handed it to me; I received it with my outstretched fingers, scooping it up. Laurie-Anne reminded me to say Nakurmiik (thank-you). The meat was juicy, sweet, wild and fresh; I sucked it and chewed it, savouring the flavor without guilt. We joked about having a little red wine a nice Chianti to wash it down, and made slurping sounds and references to Silence of the Lambs, nick-naming Gideon Hannibal. Sharing comes naturally to the Inuit, and there was proof in this experience. Laurie-Anne and I buzzed around the crowd, snapping photos and enjoying the happy buzz of activity and conversation. Over on the boat the hunters stood back, chatting, smiling and smoking. It reminded me a little of a market I visited in Northern Turkey, except there they were passing out apple tea with almond cookies! We stayed for an hour and left smiling, chilly outside but warm on the inside, a warm happiness from the feeling of community and sharing. 179

They tell us good stories from the past about how they lived and how they survived. We are so lucky to live up here; we are living because of our elders who tried to live and survive. If we didn t have them, we wouldn t be here. I ve heard that they moved to Northern Quebec from Asia because they were afraid of the ancient war. I can say that they moved to the right place. Some Inuit people don t know how to make kamiks, parkas, amautiks, etc. We need to know how to make them so we won t have to say we should have asked them how to make them when they were here ; it is the right time to learn right now before they leave us. It is not the same at this time compared to how they lived. They used to live in an igloo or a seal and caribou skin tent and they also used to sleep under the rocks during the summer. I am so thankful that they knew how to make these things even though I don t really show them. Some of us don t really think that the elders are important to us but they really are. We should have a closer relationship with them; they won t be here for long and I know that we will miss them if they leave us. Global Warming is Changing Inuit Traditions by Jessica Fleming I remember when it was a very hot day in my hometown. People who worked at the clinic were announcing through the radio telling the people to drink a lot of water because of dehydration, and to use sun block lotion as the weather was too hot. Many people were feeling uncomfortable, some even fainted, and some people had second degree burn from the sun; their skin got infected even though they were using sun block lotion. In the north we are not used to this weather, but it is starting to happen more and more because of globing warming. If it keeps happening our lives are going to change, and if the climate keeps getting warmer the number of Arctic animals will decrease as they either die or move to a more hospitable habitat. Global warming is affecting people all over the world, but it is especially affecting the Inuit people and the way they live their traditional way of life. Some hunters fall through the ice because the temperature is rising up and it is melting the ice. Global warming is affecting the seals because the seals have to give birth to their pups on the ice. Weather conditions present serious challenges to human health and food. Warming is disrupting and even destroying our hunting and food-sharing culture. The elders and other Inutjuamiut were showing the students traditional aspects of our culture, such as hunting skills, sewing skills and traditional games. The activities included: Sculpting Skinning caribou and fox Cutting meat Sewing Making baskets with dried grass Cooking bannock Games Throat singing This was a fun afternoon for me, seeing the elders showing us what they do when catch animals, cooking bannock and what games they used to play. Most of them reminded me a lot about my home in Kuujjuaraapik. When I m home I watch my uncle skin a fox in the winter and I used to watch my grandmother skinning a seal, but right now I don t because I m away from home for my education. And I skinned a caribou s leg once when I was a Junior Ranger, when we were at a picnic in the winter. It was not easy to do. I am glad that they do this annually, but I wonder if it might be a good thing to do something like this more often because in each season there are different animals and different methods of survival. Change by Selina Kasudluak A lot of things have changed in just a few years. A lot of houses have been built. The landscape has changed. They don t move with dogs anymore, they now use vehicles. They used to play fishing games on the ice in July; the fish are still there but the ice is not. They used to land airplanes where the dock is now, but as the planes got bigger, the space they needed got bigger too. A lot of things have changed. Defining Northern Canada: Nunavimmi Pigiursavik Chooses Earlier this year, a government-sponsored survey was commissioned to discover the 101 things that best define Canada as a country. Over 3000 Canadians were questioned; firstly they were asked five open-ended questions: what is Canada s defining person, event, place, symbol and accomplishment? All of the results were gathered and presented back to the respondent in a random order. From that new list, they were asked to pick the top 10 items and rank these from most to least important. The most important item was assigned ten points, the secondmost was a nine and points declined to one for the least important item. The final list can be viewed on but here is the top 10: 1) Maple Leaf 2) Hockey 3) Canadian Flag 4) Beaver 5) Canadarm 6) Canada Day 7) Peacekeeping 8) Pierre Elliott Trudeau 9) Universal Healthcare 10) Niagara Falls Many people were very surprised however that there were no examples of First Nations people, culture or symbols in the original list, so much so that Aboriginal People have since been granted the 102nd place on the list. After reading about the list and researching the story behind it, the Secondary 6 students at Nunavimmi Pigiursavik decided to do their own survey of the things that best define Northern Canada. A questionnaire was designed in class then given to all the students and staff at the school. The questionnaire was then distributed to the students and staff at Innalik School in Inukjuak, and at the time of writing the results are beginning to come in. The results of the survey will be published in the next edition of Pigiursavimmik Tusariarvik, and the Secondary 6 students eventually intend to send their completed survey to the Makivik Magazine and the Nunatsiaq News, and maybe it will be possible for all the inhabitants of the North to add their opinions in time. 181
