Kirschbaum, FRSC FACULTY MEMBERS Dr. Kirschbaum holds a DRech (Paris) in political science, a MA (Toronto) in Russian and East European Studies, and a BScSoc (Ottawa) in political science, history, and economics. His research interests include Central European politics, particularly Slovakia, war, diplomacy, and security studies. Associate Professors: Elisabeth Abergel (on leave), Christina Clark-Kazak Dr. Clark-Kazak holds a DPhil (Oxon) in development studies, a MA (Cantab) in international relations, and a BA (UBC) in French and international relations. Her research interests include young people s political participation, age mainstreaming, migration, and international development. Assistant Professors: Jean Michel Montsion Dr. Montsion holds a DPhil (McMaster) in Political Science, a MA (Ottawa) in International Relations, and a BScSoc (Ottawa) in Political Science. His research interests include Southeast Asian politics, international migrations, diaspora, geography, and international political economy. Sessional Assistant Professors : Sabine Dreher, Octave Keutiben, Awalou Ouedraogo Dr. Dreher holds a Dr.rer.pol (Bremen) in political science University, a M.A. (York) in political science and a Diplom (BA equivalent) (Konstanz) in administrative studies. Her research interests include the role of migration in a globalizing economy, global civil society, world history, and religion from an international political economy perspective. Dr. Keutiben holds a Ph.D. (Montreal) in economics, a M.Sc. (Abidjan) in statistics and economics, a M.Sc. and a M.Ed. (Yaounde) in mathematics. His research interests include international economics, resources economics, and development economics. Dr. Ouedraogo holds a DRech (Geneva) in International Law, a MA (Geneva) in international law, a Certificate (Geneva) in transnational law, and MA (Ouagadougou) in public law. His research interests include public international law, history and philosophy of law, law of armed conflicts and human rights, law of the United Nations, diplomacy, war and its alternatives, and peace building in Africa. 4 Course Directors: Marianne Fedunkiw, Marco Fonseca Dr. Fedunkiw holds a PhD (Toronto) in history of medicine, a MA (Toronto) in history and philosophy of science and technology, a MA (UWO) in journalism, and a BSc (Toronto) in biology and English. Her scholarly interests include the funding of science/medical research, the use of motion pictures for international public health propaganda, and the education/professionalization of science/medicine in the 20th and 21st centuries. Dr. Fonseca holds a PhD (York) in Social and Political Thought, a MA (York) in Social and Political Thought, and a BA (York) in history and Latin American Studies. His scholarly interests include the political theory and philosophy of civil society, indigenous peoples and revolutionary movements in Latin American and International Studies, and debates in various forms of Critical Theory. Ses recherches portent sur l économie internationale, l économie des ressources naturelles et l économie de développement. Monsieur Ouedraogo est titulaire d un DRech (Genève) en droit international, d un MA (Genève) en droit international, d un Certificat (Genève) en droit transnational et d un MA (Ouagadougou) en droit public. Ses recherches portent notamment sur le droit international public, l histoire et la philosophie du droit, les droits humains et le droit des conflits armés, le droit des organisations internationales spécialement les Nations Unies, la diplomatie, la guerre et ses alternatives et les questions africaines. Ses recherches comprennent la théorie politique et la philosophie de la société civile, les peuples autochtones et les mouvements révolutionnaires en Amérique latine et en études internationales, ainsi que les débats dans diverses formes de la théorie critique. Madame Fedunkiw est titulaire d un PhD (Toronto) en histoire de la médecine, d un MA (Toronto) en histoire et philosophie des sciences et de la technologie, d un MA (UWO) en journalisme, et d un BSc (Toronto) en biologie et anglais. Ses intérêts portent sur le financement de la science/recherché médicale, l utilisation de la cinématographie dans la propagande de la santé publique mondiale, et l éducation/la professionnalisation de la science/médecine aux 20e et 21 e siècles. 6 ISSA - INTERNATIONAL STUDIES STUDENT ASSOCIATION The International Studies Student Association of Glendon College was revived in October 1995 by students venturing into the global village. Primarily devised as an area of discussion about academic matters, the Association is also committed to provide extracurricular activities and experience of the international field. ISSA organizes different activities of interest for International Studies students, such as information sessions on MA programs and internships, conferences, discussions with professors, pub nights, etc. The most daring project, the International Studies Annual Symposium, an event totally conceived and managed by students, was launched in 1995 and has had a glaring success ever since, becoming a permanent feature of the programme. Details of this project are provided in the Annex on Student Initiatives. AÉÉI - L'ASSOCIATION DES ÉTUDIANTS EN ÉTUDES INTERNATIONALES L'Association a été remise sur pied en octobre 1995 par un groupe d'étudiants désireux d'approfondir leur connaissance du village planétaire. Son but premier était d orgnaniser des discussions sur les questions académiques. Cependant, l'aééi ne s'est pas arrêtée là. Elle organise diverses activités pour les étudiants du Programme: conférences, séances d'information sur les programmes de maîtrise et de stage, soirées-causeries, ainsi que des soirées au Café de la Terrasse. Lancé en 1995, le projet le plus ambitieux, le Colloque Annuel d Études Internationales est devenu une composante permanente du programme. Ce projet, entièrement conçu et géré par les étudiants, connaît un succès retentissant. 7 ACCADEMIC FOCUS AND OBJECTIVES The Departmental programme aims to develop a systematic understanding of the problems and potentialities of international society, with special reference to its theoretical, strategic, legal, economic and cultural dimensions. To facilitate the pursuit of systematic knowledge and, at the same time, enhance the identity, coherence and visibility of the academic programme, core courses are offered in each of these dimensions. Core courses explore the historical, philosophical, theoretical and methodological foundations of the various dimensions of international society. In combination, they should greatly strengthen the students capacity for a more genuine interdisciplinary and multicultural analysis of international relations. The fourth year seminar plays a key role in this effort by linking theoretical and methodological issues with students research activities and internship experiences. The programme of study thus equips students with the required analytic tools and challenges them to think constructively towards the creation of a more peaceful, humane and just world order. Due consideration is paid to the role of Canada and Francophone and Anglophone cultures in this process. Particularly significant, in this era of globalization, is the Program s emphasis on a broad interdisciplinary and multicultural conception of international society. Students are also actively encouraged to acquire proficiency in several foreign languages as well as relevant international experience, through interuniversity exchanges and professional internships. To summarize, the main objectives of the programme of study are: To provide a systematic and sophisticated understanding of the problems, paradoxes and potentialities of international society. To equip students professionally with the tools of analysis, competing methodologies, languages, and the burgeoning literature in the field of International Studies. To challenge everyone to think and plan constructively towards the creation of a better, more secure, more peaceful, humane, and just world order. To develop a thorough knowledge of Canadian concerns, both domestic and international, and to consider future roles for Canadian participation in international life. To develop students' perception of both francophone and anglophone cultures in their global context. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Honours degree in International Studies equips the student for careers in the diplomatic service, journalism, inter-governmental and non-governmental international organizations, the teaching profession, and the civil service. 8 ORIENTATION ET OBJECTIFS ACADÉMIQUES Le programme académique en études internationales vise à mettre en relief les tensions et les possibilités existant au sein de la société internationale de façon méthodique et approfondie. Les dimensions théoriques, stratégiques, économiques et culturelles sont au cœur du programme et sont reflétées dans les cours de base, établissant le caractère unique et singulier de cette approche, encourageant et renforçant la connaissance systématique du sujet, explorant les fondements historiques, philosophiques, théoriques et méthodologiques des composantes multiples de la société internationale. Ils sont conçus dans le but de fournir aux étudiants des outils d'analyse interdisciplinaire et multiculturelle permettant une interprétation approfondie des relations internationales. Le séminaire de quatrième année couronne cette progression en associant les questions théoriques et méthodologiques aux recherches individuelles et aux expériences pratiques acquises à travers les stages. Les cours en études internationales procurent aux étudiants les instruments d'analyse nécessaires à la réflexion sur un ordre mondial guidé par la paix, la justice et l'humanité. Afin de cerner la complexité et la portée du concept de société internationale les cours considèrent le rôle du Canada et des cultures francophones et anglophones ainsi que l'influence de la mondialisation, vue d'une perspective interdisciplinaire et multiculturelle, dans les évènements internationaux. Nous encourageons nos étudiants à maîtriser plusieurs langues et à acquérir des connaissances pratiques du système international à travers les échanges inter-universitaires et les stages professionnels. En bref, les objectifs principaux de programme consistent à: Appliquer les méthodes théoriques et approfondies pour l'analyse de la société internationale dans toutes ses formes Préparer les étudiants en leur donnant les instruments d'analyse, méthodologies variées, langues étrangères et la littérature émergente en études internationales Encourager la réflexion sur l'élaboration d'un monde guidé par la paix, la sécurité, la justice et l'humanité Étudier les cultures francophones et anglophones dans leur contexte international Explorer les perspectives interdisciplinaires et multiculturelles de la mondialisation POSSIBILITÉS D EMPLOI Le baccalauréat spécialisé en études internationales prépare les étudiants à des carrières dans les domaines diplomatiques, de la diplomatie et du journalisme, au sein d organisations internationales, dans l enseignement et la fonction publique. 9 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Students may enrol in an Honours BA, an Honours Major / Minor BA, an Honours Double Major BA or a Specialized Honours BA. Note that not all courses listed below will be offered in any one year. Students should consult with the Departmental Chair and/or the Student Advisor before choosing courses. NOTE: Graduate Studies Students should take into consideration that most graduate programs require a course in international relations and introductory courses in micro-economics and macro-economics. Some require International Economics (Trade and Finance) and/or an upper year level course in methodology. Students who intend to apply to a graduate program in International Studies after completing their B.A. at York should carefully check the requirements of the program(s) they intend to apply for and ensure that required courses are included in their undergraduate program. They can best fulfill the requirements by doing a Double Major Program, combining a major in International Studies and a major in another program at Glendon. 11 EXIGENCES DU PROGRAMME Le Département offre un choix de Baccalauréat. Les étudiants peuvent choisir entre un Baccalauréat spécialisé approfondi, un Baccalauréat spécialisé avec majeur et mineur, un Baccalauréat spécialisé avec double majeure ou un Baccalauréat spécialisé. Notez que tous les cours indiqués dans la liste ci-dessous ne sont pas nécessairement offerts chaque année. Il est recommandé aux étudiants de consulter le coordinateur du Programme durant la sélection de leur cours. REMARQUE : Il est important de retenir que la plupart des programmes d études «post-gradués» exigent comme condition d admission les cours de relations internationales et d introduction à l analyse microéconomique et macroéconomique. Certains programmes exigent aussi un cours en économie internationale ainsi qu un cours avancé de méthodes. Les étudiants qui désirent poursuivre leurs études dans le domaine des études internationales après leur BA sont priés de vérifier attentivement les cours exigés dans le programme de leur choix et de suivre ces cours au 1 er cycle. 27 1. STUDENTS INITIATIVES Annual International Studies Symposium ANNEXES The Glendon s Student Annual International Studies Symposium is a project entirely conceived and managed by students. It was initiated during the academic year by a group of highly motivated students, eager to deepen their knowledge and experience of foreign countries or regions and the relations between Canada and those countries or regions. So far, the Project has covered the following countries or regions: Cuba ( ), China ( ), South Africa ( ), the European Union ( ), the Middle East ( ), South East Asia ( ), Brazil ( ), Russia ( ), India ( ), The Great Lakes Regions of Central Africa ( ), Mexico ( ), Turkey ( ), Egypt ( ), Venezuela ( ), Hispaniola ( ), and Germany ( ). This highly demanding Project has five main components: a series of seminars on the selected country, region or institution (Fall Term); the organization of an international colloquium on the subject (Winter Term); a field research trip (after the final exams); and the submission of a research essay on aspects of the county/institution concerned (usually on matters dealing with security, trade, investments, and human rights). Publication of the proceedings of the Symposium and student s essays. The success of this project has enhanced the visibility, not only of the Department of International Studies, but also of Glendon College and York University as a whole, in Canada and abroad. The students have consistently been able to invite many distinguished speakers and guests to participate in the symposium, including foreign diplomats as well as Canadian federal ministers and renowned Canadian and international academics. The project has become a major event, forging links among various constituencies, notably the Glendon, York and outside academic community as well as the wider metropolitan community, in particular its immigrant population. A significant development in the history of this project occurred in with the publication of the proceeding of the Brazil symposium. Proceedings of the symposium on Russia were also printed by the Toronto University Press. We expect this kind of publication to become a Glendon tradition. In 2003, the Glendon s Student Annual International Studies Symposium on Russia received an important national recognition: The Student Leadership in Internationalization Award, assigned by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).
