It was such a joy to see so many cheerful pilgrims arrive to brighten the wet weather we have been having. I recently celebrated memorial masses for Fr. Enda Naughton and our Sister Bertilla - may they rest in peace. Sister Bertilla's legacy remains in the many works of the Sanctuary she initiated. I would also like to ask for your prayers for Fr. Robert G. Gibas, Archconfraternity Spiritual Director for or all of the United States of America. He is currently in the hospital. We hope you enjoy hearing about the activities and seeing photos of our Universal Archconfraternity Centers from around the world. These show how very much loved and needed Saint Philomena is. Giovanni Braschi Rector of the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena Saint Philomena's birthday celebration After the birthday Mass on January 10th every year, the celebration for Saint Philomena begins. In a tradition more than fifty years old, the people of Mugnano de Cardinale cut a tree from the mountain behind the Sanctuary. A parade of locals drives to the Sanctuary with sections of the very large tree attached to their various vehicles

2 from farm tractors to utility vans to trucks. Some even drag their allotted portion of the huge tree with teams pulling with ropes. The crowd cheers them on as they turn the corner with their gift in honor of their beloved Saint. All the while fire crackers and other noisy booms are heard to acknowledge the day she first arrived in Mugnano over 200 years ago. On that day she was greeted with the sounds of church bells and large cannons. The city made as much noise as they could in their excitement, gratitude and pride of being the home of this great Saint. Surely their celebration awoke such love in Saint Philomena's heart that she wanted to shower them with graces from God. And she has. The tradition of the Saint Philomena Holy Oil has it origins in the first week after the translation of the Saint's relics to Mugnano. The saint arrived at the Sanctuary on Sunday, the 11th of August. For nine days the population prayed before the saint, and January 10th, 2013, was no different in Mugnano de Cardinale. Bands played, fire crackers boomed loudly, people cheered and the trees, section by section, arrived to great response from Philomena's grateful family here in Mugnano. The blessing of the Holy Oil of Saint Philomena January 13, 2013 The Sanctuary of Saint Philomena Mugnano del Cardinale Many lands and many languages join together in glorious praise of life in Jesus Christ and our Queen in Heaven, our Holy Mother Mary, in celebration through our Princess, Saint Philomena on this day of the official annual blessing of the Holy Oil of Saint Philomena. The church was packed to capacity. 25 coaches brought Representatives from Archconfraternities around Italy and the world. Over 1,000 people more than in previous years. were here for the occasion of the blessing of the oil. Even though the sanctuary only has 300 seats people were happy to stand, even outside in the rain. It was a truly blessed day by all accounts. Many would return for the celebration at evening Mass to express their love and devotion to our Princess. Each group was hailed with band music, then escorted inside to the Holy Altar of Saint Philomena to be greeted by the Rector of the Sanctuary, Msgr. Braschi. The Sanctuary quietly rumbled with the low chatter in many languages as old friends of the family of Saint Philomena greeted each other and the choir sang sweetly. Then a hush of reverence washed over the crowded Sanctuary as the annual ceremony of the blessing of the sacred oil of Saint Philomena began.

3 Sunday, the 11th of August. For nine days the population prayed before the saint, and We had The Rosary of Saint Filomena at 6.30 pm followed by a Holy Mass celebrated by Father Mariano Matubis, sub director of the Archconfraternity of Aruba as our Spiritual Director Father Toti Fuentbella is not on the island. After the Mass the devotees had the opportunity to kiss the First Class Relics of Saint Filomena and after that we the ninth day was marked by many portents. During High Mass, a poor widow, Angela Guerriero, was praying with faith for the cure of her ten-year-old Modestino who was crippled and unable to stand. Just as she had bowed her head she heard a slither beside her, and turning round to see if Modestino had fallen, she saw him running up the aisle to Philomena to thank her for his cure. After Mass, Modestino had to walk around the town to show everyone his straight legs. Of course all the bells had to be rung again, and Modestino was followed by all the drums of the local band playing as hard as possible to make up for the fact that they had used up all the gunpowder last Sunday and so could not be more explosive. You can imagine that everyone in the town tried to get into the church for Vespers, but cram as they might, this was not possible. There was one woman who was hampered by a heavy baby of two years old in her arms. He was blind, having lost his sight incurably after small-pox. She pushed and struggled in vain, but during the sermon, when the crowd was standing more or less still, she managed to edge her way, inch by inch, to the shrine. She dipped her finger in the oil of a lamp which was burning before the shrine, and anointed the baby's eyes with it. Instantly and without pain, the scarred eyelids opened, and the eyes beneath them saw the light of the lamp and the baby laughed with joy and made a grab at it. Each year thereafter, villages from all over Europe brought Olive Oil from their respective groves as a gift to the Sanctuary to be blessed on this special annual Feast day to be used by devotees world-wide. The Holy Oil of Saint Philomena is presented in small red vessels (bottles) and has the mark of the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale identifying it as official. 4 had the opportunity to kiss the First Class Relics of Saint Filomena and after that we went in the Shrine of Saint Filomena where we song loudly the Happy Birthday to our beloved Saint while we lit the glow lights in her honor. After this ceremony we went into the Parish House where we had a toast of Champagne in her honor. It was an unforgettable night for us in Aruba. This is a report from Ireland, about the very spiritual Mass celebrated by Fr. Delaney in the beautiful church of St. Brigid in Coon County Kilkenny, on the 10th of January 2013, Saint Philomena's Birthday. Fr. Delaney gave a very detailed account of her life and death, and the finding of her Relics in the Catacombs in Rome, and her journey to the church in Mugnano in Italy, where her Relics now are, and can be venerated all year. Pilgrims travel from all over the World, including Ireland, to visit her Relics. There is accommodation there beside the Church if you wish to stay for a few days. As the day began at the Devotional Centre, members of the committee welcomed and greeted the pilgrims. The celebration began with the Holy rosary. Before the commencement of the mass, a small group of men processed in and around the church with a statue of Saint Philomena. This procession was significant as it was a celebration of her birthday. This brought upon a spiritual and healing feeling amongst the pilgrims. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Austin after the procession. For his homily, he reminded the congregation of the wonderful work of Saint Philomena, and spoke about her martyrdom. The overwhelming presence of the pilgrims made it one of the most extra special feast days in our devotional centre in Rochester. Once mass was completed, pilgrims gathered together in the community hall and had lunch. During the lunch break, we had prayers and talks led by both Fr. Austin and chairman Terry Clarke. During this time, some devotees shared personal testimonies. Members of the committee had also organised a cake to share and celebrate Saint Philomena's birthday. During this time cords and prayer cards were distributed. After 2 pm we commenced the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, adorations, hymns and divine mercy prayers. At the end of the feast day, pilgrims were overwhelmed with the celebration they had just participated in. Each felt drawn to Saint Philomena's presence throughout the day where many graces were received. Fr. Austin and members of the committee had done a great job in promoting the devotion of Saint Philomena. Their hard work would lead more souls to the Lord and our blessed Mother. The next Saint Philomena feast day will be held on Saturday 25th of May. This celebration will focus on the finding of the relics of Saint Philomena. One of the cakes had red and white in it, so we dubbed it the Cord Cake. We even had carrots and other veggies to dip along with the chips and pretzels. We sang Happy Birthday to our saint - on key and lovely. At our Mass gatherings I don't always give a homily. We give the opportunity to share how Philomena's prayers have drawn us closer to our Lord. No one raised their hands yesterday, so I gave a bit of a homily. Then hands came up. Whether in homily or in sharing, the speaker holds the cord. We always try to remember that the white of full-hearted love leads to the red of self-sacrifice. Yesterday we prayed the Mass prayers for an increase in charity. The Mass was for a lady with breast cancer and will have both breasts removed later this month. I spoke with Lydia earlier in the day, and she was with us in spirit. We will continue to pray for all who sought healing at Mass as we placed the relic on that part of the body. We continue to pray for the Shea Family and those they know who want Philomena's intercession. Mrs. Shea had phoned from Buffalo, New York earlier in the day. How wonderful the way love transcends time and space. Around 75 attended the mass. We had a special liturgy for a virgin martyr on Thursday at the daily children's mass with a birthday reception afterwards with birthday cake. Then, on Sunday, we used Eucharistic Prayer #1 with the addition of Philomena's name at the end of the list of martyrs. Later that day, at three pm we had a second Saint Philomena Birthday party and parish potluck, where I showed my slides of my October visit to the Shrine in Mugnano. We toasted Saint Philomena with a glass of red wine and said a chaplet before dismissing. The picture is of me and our little student Philomena. I'm wearing a red chasuble with a picture of our saint that was printed on cloth and then attached to my vestment. 8 We had a lovely Birthday with Saint Philomena again this year! Approximately 70 people attended Holy Mass in her honor and then prayed the Litany of Saint Philomena at her statue immediately afterwards. There were people of all ages and backgrounds, regular attendees, and new devotees. People from San Antonio and the surrounding areas gathered and prayed and thanked Saint Philomena for her powerful intercession. I received five s from devotees who could not attend, but who asked that their prayers be offered at the event. I made sure to remember their intentions during the consecration and litany. (Thanks to the prompting of Saint Philomena, of course!) It was a blessed event! I am always so grateful for the turnout we receive and know that Saint Philomena is truly loved by our devotees! After the litany, the local Catholic homeschooling group, T.O.R.C.H., of which my family are members, gathered in a parish hall to have their annual birthday party for Saint Philomena! We had 40+ attendees, many of whom come every year to celebrate this feast with us. The children were given craft activities which included coloring pages of Saint Philomena, a paper chaplet to make, and a puzzle of Saint Philomena to color and cut out. We ate a light dinner and then, as is tradition, gathered the children to hold up a banner which reads, "Happy Birthday Saint Philomena!" I will have to forward the photo and video of the children singing in separate s! We ended the evening with birthday cake and taking home our various Saint Philomena creations. My family is so blessed to host the three feasts for our sweet Saint Philomena! I am humbled by the special work it is to share her with others. She has done so much for my family! 9 Después de la Misa por el nacimiento de Santa Filomena, que se celebra el 10 de enero de cada año, empieza la fiesta. Es una tradición de más de cincuenta años que el pueblo de Mugnano del Cardinale corta un árbol de la montaña detrás del Santuario. Un desfile de gente fue a la capilla con las secciones del árbol atado a sus diversos vehículos - tractores, camionetas o camiones. Algunos incluso arrastraron una sección del gran árbol tirándolo con cuerdas. Cuando dieron la vuelta a la esquina con su regalo el público aplaudió. Los petardos explotaron mientras que otros sonidos se escucharon para recordar el día en que nuestra Santa llegó a Mugnano hace unos 200 años. Ese día fue recibido con los sonidos de las campanas y cañones de gran tamaño. La ciudad recibió a Santa Filomena con entusiasmo y gratitud, orgullosa de ser la sede de esta grande Santa. Seguramente este entusiasmo despertó el amor en el corazón de Santa Filomena que inundó a la gente con la gracia de Dios. El 10 de enero de 2013 no fue diferente en Mugnano del Cardenal. Inmediatamente y sin dolor, las cicatrices de los párpados se abrieron, y sus ojos vieron la luz de la lámpara y el bebé se echó a reír de alegría y trató de agarrarl.

10 Cada año, desde entonces, los pueblos de toda Europa traigan aceite de oliva como regalo a la capilla para ser bendecido en este día especial de celebración y luego ser utilizado por los devotos de todo el mundo. El óleo Santo de Santa Filomena se presenta en pequeñas botellas rojas y la marca oficial del Santuario de Santa Filomena en Mugnano del Cardenal lo identifica como oficial. Ho anche celebrato una messa di suffragio per don Enda Naughton RIP e la nostra suor Bertilla RIP che ci ha lasciato in eredità molte opere del Santuario. Alcuni addirittura trascinano una sezione del grande albero tirandola con le corde, quando girano l'angolo con il loro dono in onore della loro amata Santa la folla esulta. I petardi esplodono mentre altri suoni si sentono per ricordare il giorno in cui la nostra piccola Santina arrivò a Mugnano circa 200 anni fa. Quel giorno fu salutata con suoni di campane e cannoni di grandi dimensioni. La città la accolse con entusiasmo e gratitudine, orgogliosa di essere la sede di questa grande Santa. Sicuramente la loro festa risvegliò tale amore nel cuore di Santa Filomena che li inondò con le grazie di Dio. Il 10 gennaio del 2013 non è stato differente a Cardinale de Mugnano,. Le bande suonavano, i petardi esplodevano, la gente applaudiva e l' albero, sezione per sezione, arrivava grazie alla grande famiglia di santa Filomena qui al santuario di Mugnano. La benedizione dell'olio Santo di Santa Filomena 13 gen 2013 Il Santuario di Santa Filomena Mugnano del Cardinale Molti paesi e molte lingue si uniscono in lode gloriosa della vita in Gesù Cristo e nostra Regina in Cielo, nostra Madre Santa Maria, in celebrazione attraverso la nostra principessa, Santa Filomena in questo giorno della benedizione dell' Olio Santo. La chiesa era gremita all'inverosimile. 25 pullman hanno portato rappresentanti dalle Arciconfraternite in giro per l'italia e per il mondo. Oltre persone - più che negli anni precedenti, si sono recati al Santuario in occasione della benedizione dell'olio. Anche se il Santuario ha solo 300 posti a sedere le persone erano felici di stare in piedi, anche fuori sotto la pioggia. E 'stata una giornata veramente benedetta.
