We are delighted that you have chosen to come to UWIC for your Erasmus study period, and hope you will find your stay rewarding and enjoyable. This information package has been compiled to help you plan your visit to Wales. Please read this information package in conjunction with our webpage ( where you will find more details about Cardiff and UWIC. As an Erasmus student you will know that you have the unique privilege of not having to pay tuition fees to UWIC. Depending on your subject area, you may also have a little more freedom in your module choice than UK students. Before you leave for the UK, you should agree your study choices with your home tutor. These should be indicated on the enclosed ECTS Learning Agreement which should be signed by both your home tutor and the Erasmus Co-ordinator at UWIC. It is usually possible for students to make changes to their original module choices within the first two weeks of the Semester. Occasionally some modules may be withdrawn for a number of reasons, or there may be a timetable clash which could prevent you from studying a certain combination of modules, so you may need to be a little flexible. Whilst it is useful for us to have an idea of your module choices, it is usual for the Learning Agreement to be signed by the UWIC Erasmus Co-ordinator on arrival. We do not have a formal application form, but are happy to accept applications on your home institution's application form, or simply to accept a CV. Please direct all applications via the Erasmus Co-ordinator, so that we can check that your application is eligible. Please send your applications in good time, by 30 May 2010 (for students coming in the Autumn term) and 30 October 2010 (for students coming in the Spring Term). After these dates we cannot guarantee that you will be accepted. ABOUT UWIC (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) The Institute was formed in 1976 from four separate colleges of Further Education. In 1996, it was granted University status and became University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). In November 1995, UWIC was one of only three universities in the UK to be awarded the Government's Charter Mark for Excellence in Public Service. Specific points singled out for praise were academic standards and the levels of student satisfaction. The Charter Mark has just been renewed for a third threeyear period.

3 UWIC prides itself on its relationship with its students, seeking their opinions on a range of college matters. Students tell us they choose UWIC not only because of this favourable reputation, but because it offers vocational courses closely linked with industry and the professions. We also place great emphasis on the need to prepare our students for work opportunities overseas, organising a wide range of work placements and study visits outside the UK, through a thriving programme of exchange schemes. UWIC is one of the largest colleges of its kind in Britain with some 11,000 students. It attracts students from all parts of the world because of its reputation, not only for its range of quality courses, but also for the high level of care shown to students. Many of our courses have an international element and we enjoy partnerships with higher education institutions around the world. The courses have been designed to provide a study programme of sufficient depth and rigour to equip students, on completion, with the necessary critical understanding, professional knowledge, skills and attitudes to make a meaningful contribution to their chosen profession. The Erasmus Co-ordinator, based at the Llandaff Campus, will send out initial Information Packages to Erasmus students, giving details about Cardiff, UWIC, how to apply for accommodation, and any other relevant information. Any specific questions relating to accommodation should be addressed to the Accommodation Service. Please don't contact the Erasmus Co-ordinator if you have any queries about accommodation; they are not responsible for the allocation of rooms to students. The dates for 2010/2011 are as follows: Autumn Term 27/09/10 17/12/10 (12 weeks) Spring Term 17/01/11 25/03/11 (10 weeks) Summer Term 03/05/11 24/06/11 (8 weeks) ARRIVAL Erasmus students arriving for the Autumn term are welcome to take advantage of the "Year 1 Induction Week", which will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings and the facilities on offer at UWIC. Some Schools will also arrange a special induction meeting for Erasmus students, when they will be able to enrol, confirm their module choices, arrange their timetable, and meet other exchange students. When making your travel arrangements, please try to plan your journey so that you arrive at UWIC on a Monday - Friday, during the daytime if at all possible. Students arriving on Saturdays and Sundays may have to wait until the following Monday for assistance with finding accommodation. Please contact the Erasmus Co-ordinator for your subject area to check enrolment details.

5 ACCOMMODATION Full details of accommodation available to Erasmus students can be found in the leaflet which accompanies this information package. Please complete the Accommodation Application form in this Information Pack to let us know your preference. Remember, the earlier you return your Accommodation Application form, the more likely you are to be allocated a room on campus. HmcCarthy@uwic.ac.uk LIVING IN THE UK Banks You may wish to open a bank account in Cardiff, but for a period of one term this may not be necessary as you should have no difficulty obtaining cash from a cash machine in the same way as you do at home. If you decide to open an account here, it is advisable to choose a bank that is close to your study campus or accommodation. You are likely to need the following documents if opening a bank account: customer Passport (or other form of identity) Letter from your home bank confirming that you are a reliable Letter or other document stating that you are a UWIC student Proof of your address in the UK Banks are normally open from 9.30 am to 4.30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Credit cards are accepted widely in the UK. Students are advised to have at least per month for living. To this should be added the cost of books and study materials. Beware! Don't get caught out! Cardiff Bus drivers don't give change, so make sure you have plenty of coins. Employment / National Insurance Many students take a part-time job whilst they are studying at UWIC. EEA Nationals may work in the UK. No permission is needed. However, you will be subject to UK taxation rules and must pay National Insurance contributions and tax in the same way as residents of the UK (although if you earn a low wage you will be exempt from paying tax). To meet this requirement a National Insurance Number is needed. Students should apply to the local office of the Department of Social Security, taking along their passport and details of the proposed insurance. It may take some time to obtain the National Insurance Number, but work can commence at any time while an application is being processed. The UWIC job-shop can help you find part-time employment. Insurance Students should have adequate insurance cover to include medical expenses, luggage and personal effects, accident and personal liability. Remember to insure any luggage you may send by freight transport.

6 If you intend driving a car while in the UK, check with your home insurance company whether you need an additional insurance Green Card. Health Service UWIC has a team of nurses who provide cover for all campuses during term time. In addition, at the Cyncoed campus there are regular surgeries provided by the University Medical Officer. Drop-in sessions are provided daily by the nursing staff at each of the four campuses. The Health Service is available for help and advice on all matters of health and well-being. EEA Students - Healthcare Arrangements If you are enrolled on a course that lasts less than 6 months then you are eligible for free treatment from the National Health Service (NHS) only if a medical condition arises during your visit to the UK. You are therefore advised to take out private medical insurance before travelling. If you are enrolled on a course lasting 6 months or more you and your family are entitled to receive free NHS treatment from a local doctor, General Practitioner (GP) or NHS hospital. You will however probably have to pay a charge for medicines, dental and optical treatment. If your country has a reciprocal Health Care agreement with the UK, you should fill in form E128 in your own country before travelling to the UK. This will entitle you to full NHS treatment. If there is no reciprocal agreement, then please ensure that your have adequate insurance cover. You should register with a General Practitioner (Doctor) as soon as possible after arriving. Full details can be obtained from the Nurse at the Medical Centre on each campus. HOW TO GET HERE Campus location maps can be downloaded from our website ( From Cardiff International Airport There is an hourly bus service from the airport to Cardiff Bus Station. ( From London Heathrow or London Gatwick Airports There are regular bus services ( and train services ( to Cardiff. By train Cardiff Central Railway Station and Cardiff Bus Station are both in the city centre. It's a short distance from Howard Gardens and approximately three miles from the centres at Llandaff, Colchester Avenue and Cyncoed. Taxis and local buses to all the campuses and to Plas Gwyn Halls of Residence are available from the station. Local train services operate from both Central and Queen Street stations. The UWIC Rider - UWIC's own bus service Operating from Monday to Saturday from 8am to midnight during term-time, the bus service makes travel between the campuses easy for UWIC students, and allows safe travel into the city at night. II PEDAGOGIE Années et semestres accessibles dans le cadre d un séjour d études L2: S3 et S4 L3: S5 M1: S7 et S8 27/04/2010 Dear Hubert I am writing in response to a letter I have received regarding one of your students, Ms. Audrey Ducreux and the Erasmus Exchange Programme. In the letter, it states that she is applying to be enrolled into the Third Year of Media Studies with Visual Cultures. We do not accept students into the Third Year unless they have studied at Year Two with us. This is because we spend the second half of the Second Year in preparation for the Third Year and Ms Ducreux would be disadvantaged. Also, the Third Year contains a module which runs all year over 2 terms, so it would not be possible for her to simply attend the First Term. I am also concerned that the current course she is studying is very practical, involving film making and photography, on the Media Studies with Visual Cultures Course, there is no opportunity for practical work, it is an entirely theory led Degree. I would be grateful if you could communicate this to her so that she fully comprehends. I would advise that Ms. Ducreux enrol into the First Term of the Second Year, where there is a range of modules that she might be interested in.
