Holy Motors is an unrestrained cinematic tour-de-force that quickly became the most talked about film at Cannes. Holy Motors follows the mysterious Monsieur Oscar (played by Carax s long-time collaborator Denis Lavant). Oscar wakes in the morning and enters a limousine where a notebook is waiting for him. Inside the notebook there is a list of identities that he must portray. In a stunning performance by Lavant, Oscar transforms into eleven different people in the course of a day. As we follow Oscar through dream-like vignettes, we become increasingly disoriented and awed by this fantastical joy ride through the streets of Paris. Holy Motors is at once revelling in the joys of cinema and also sharply critical of the conquering digital age. Holy Motors won the Youth Award and was nominated for the Palme d Or at the Cannes Film Festival. English sub-titles. Five years later, the heroes from The Island, Babis and Afroditi, are getting out of jail. A fellow inmate tells them of the existence of a treasure on the island that dates back to Ottoman times. They are immediately interested. Naturally. Various alliances and fake friendships form as the venal duo search for buried treasure while reuniting with lovable and not-so-lovable islanders. A wry and entertaining take on greed and human imperfectability, Island 2 is set on a gorgeous Greek island filled with sun and smiles. English sub-titles. Gerard (Lumbomir Kovatchev) and Magdalena (Sanya Borisova) are at odds because this eccentric foreigner has entered Magdalena s life and disrupts her quiet little village. The film also stars Christophe Lambert (Highlander) as Gerard s father. The film deals with the idea of barriers, not only cultural ones, but also language and age, in the search for love. As you will see, this hilarious cross-cultural comedy reveals that all s fair in love and geography. English sub-titles. The Foreigner est une comédie romantique à propos d'un Français qui tombe éperdument amoureux d'une chaude beauté bulgare. ESTONIA/ESTONIE Wednesday/mercredi Nov., 21 nov., 19:00 DEMONS/DEEMONID DIRECTOR/RÉALISATEUR: AIN MÄEOTS MINUTES The debut feature film of Estonian writer-director Ain Mäeots dramatically explores the dark and disturbing outcomes of gambling addiction. Demons follows three characters Joko, Ants and Reeda as each tries to balance married and work life with the seductive power of the gambling tables. The three all enter the casino for the first time innocently and leave victorious and rich at first. They soon understand how short-lived their victories are as they go through the haunting paths of gambling addiction and the effect it has on their families. An intense and yet very moving film, Demons has much to say about contemporary society s dreams of affluence and the risks people take to realise them. Tomek, a young news anchor, discovers that his long-estranged father is in a psychiatric hospital. Against the admonition of others, Tomek decides to return home to mend his relationship with a father he has not seen in years. The film s stylistic visuals paint a stark but evocative picture of a son s painful struggle to cope with his father s deterioration. Konopka wrote this film after the unexpected death of his own father in He describes Fear of Falling as a film about love a love between two people who are close to one another and yet cannot find a way to reach each other. He decides that he has had enough and buys a one-way ticket to Antibes where he hopes to re-examine his life, forget about his family, and examine how the loss of his wife has changed everything. Along the way he faces delays and complications in his journey. A finely observed, moving story about self-discovery. English sub-titles. He soon finds himself caught up in the lives of curious locals, dangerous mobsters, and an intrigued archivist named Tanya (Mihaela Sîrbu). Based on a story written by Lynchian favourite Barry Gifford (Lost Highway, Wild At Heart), The Phantom Father is a must-see for fans of cinematic nostalgia. Exploring the physical properties of celluloid through optical printing, hand processing, allowing celluloid to decay/develop while buried underground and incorporating those explorations in the films themselves, Wilson, like all true avant-garde artists, pushes the boundaries of image construction and investigates how moving images make meaning. With its perceptive approaches to ideas of landscape, sound and silence, memory, and identity, Wilson s is a fascinating and compelling body of work. Admission is pay-what-you-can. SIGUR RÓS: VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT Iceland s internationally renowned music sensation Sigur Rós s latest album, Valtari, arrives with a creative difference. The band gave a dozen filmmakers the same modest budget and asked them to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the band s new album. The idea is to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom. Among the participating filmmakers are Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo, At Any Cost), Alma Har el (Bombay Beach), and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus). The moving image results are as astonishing as the incredible music of Sigur Rós. This exclusive world premiere program presents the official videos along with added materials. Ottawa will be one of several select cities to participate in this worldwide launch on the weekend of 7-9 December.
