5 T o summarize 20 years of DAC Aviation s history is no small feat. Our past two decades are defined by much more than the gradual strengthening and growth of a hub and spoke operator with Canadian roots and a notable presence in East Africa. The history of our organization is best told as a series of stories etched into the memories of our customers, dedicated staff and the thousands for whom the sight of an aircraft has become a symbol of hope and the promise of better days ahead. Stories of missions completed, dangers averted and challenges overcome continue to echo in the hallways of our offices, maintenance facilities and field bases. The following pages are a collection of what we consider to be our greatest successes, which, when presented side by side, depict an ongoing dedication to innovation, safety and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. Over the years, DAC Aviation s success has hinged on anticipating the needs of our customers and offering the appropriate aircraft to meet those needs. This formula has allowed DAC to pioneer the introduction of the Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft to the African market in 2003 and continues to guide our aircraft acquisitions today. Our theatre of operations has always required a meticulous approach towards implementing safety, training and maintenance processes. With the support of our audit partners as well as our customers, DAC has been able to develop, implement and sustain a quality management system which exceeds the requirements of the most stringent international standards. I now invite you to explore the chapters of our story, illustrated with photographs taken by DAC staff across the African continent. My hope is that these pages are able to inspire and reaffirm our belief that perseverance and commitment can make a difference in the world, and that the dedication of a few can deliver hope to many. 11 The Journey Begins L aventure commence P erhaps it was a question of fate or perhaps destiny, but certainly not coincidence, that the first flight our newly formed aviation company embarked upon was into the heart of one of the worst human catastrophes in modern day history. How could anyone have ever predicted what fate and destiny had in store for us? As we lifted off from runway 09 in Lokichokkio and banked northwards over the mountain range that hid Loki from the north, I can tell you that the level of anxiety ran high. While I had been flying into Sudan for the past 3 years and had seen my fair share of death and destruction and had taken risks that, quite frankly, I d rather not remember, this time it was different. This time it was our aircraft, our responsibility, our risk. For the first time we were doing this for our company, our people, our future; the stakes were unquestionably high. I had bet my entire aviation career, my financial future and that of my family on a thirty day contract and an aircraft that was problematic and unreliable at best. Yet as we climbed to a cruising altitude that maintained a balance between hypoxia and small arms fire, the desire to complete this mission at any cost could not have been any stronger. Cette fois, il s agissait de notre avion, de notre responsabilité, de notre risque. Pour la première fois, nous faisions cela pour notre compagnie, nos gens, notre avenir; les enjeux étaient incontestablement élevés. 12 Continued... O peration Life Line Sudan was a UN operation that had a troubled history and was destined to have a controversial future. The civil war that raged on in Sudan between the north and the south had left millions dead, displaced and starving. The war had torn families apart and pitted brother against brother where the young and innocent suffered most. It was a war where genocide and ethnic cleansing were a daily occurrence and no one was safe especially aircraft. It was the silent war, the white elephant in the room where the rest of the world had turned a convenient blind eye. Yet there we were flying 8.6 metric tonnes of UNICEF food for children called UNIMIX to an unknown village called Waat so that thousands of children could eat and live. We spotted the village from at least one hundred miles out, not because Waat had any unique land feature, not at all. South Sudan is a featureless landscape where sand, shrub, bush fires, rain and drought change they way it looks daily. What caught our eyes was a black funnel revolving slowly counter clockwise rising up from what was to be our destination. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before and nothing in my past could have prepared me for what I was about to face first hand. Continué... La guerre civile qui se déroulait au Soudan, entre le Nord et le Sud, avait fait des millions de morts, de personnes déplacées et affamées. La guerre avait déchiré les familles et dressé les frères les uns contre les autres et les jeunes et les innocents souffraient le plus. C était une guerre où le génocide et le nettoyage ethnique étaient quotidiens et personne n était en sécurité, en particulier les avions. C était la guerre silencieuse, l éléphant blanc dans la pièce où le reste du monde avait fermé commodément les yeux. Mais nous transportions 8.6 tonnes métriques d aliments de l UNICEF, destinés aux enfants, appelés UNIMIX vers un village inconnu appelé Waat pour que des milliers d enfants puissent manger et vivre. 13 DAC First Flight A s we approached the coordinates of the village we realized in horror what we had been looking at for the past 30 minutes. The black funnel turned out to be thousands of vultures circling overhead the makeshift area where we were to land. The sky was so thick with these creatures that landing seemed to be a certain impossibility. Assuming that these huge birds would be scared off at the sight of the aircraft, we began to circle against them yet all our attempts to do so ended in vain. They would not yield. We decided to attempt an approach knowing that one bird strike in the right area on the aircraft would have been disastrous. It was not until we were short final that we realized the extent of death lying before us; thousands of dead and dying littered the area as far as the eye could see. Men, women and children, over twenty-thousand displaced peoples had waited months for hope to arrive. One cannot describe the sight and smell of death we witnessed in Waat, trying to do so would be futile. The sight of children alive with bloated stomachs lying next to their dead parents while the vultures fought over their bodies and at times feeding on them as well, people too weak to come to the aircraft while always the shadows of the vultures overhead waiting their turn to land and feast. The people were naked and emaciated covered in the sand of the South and yet quiet and uncomplaining, waiting. It was an overwhelming sight that is indelibly etched in my memory. For the next thirty days we would fly three rotations a day to Waat and slowly that black funnel disappeared. On March , seven months after starting this company, the cycle of death and starvation ended for millions of children and their parents. As we flew to these remote and inaccessible areas of the South, the world finally stood up and took notice. The rest as they say is history, but I can tell you this without a shred of doubt, the perseverance and monumental efforts of the hundreds of men and women that work for this great company every day have made a huge difference, perhaps more so than any other organization to have operated in those regions. Our specialized aircraft and our DACan-Do attitude have saved millions of people as well as more then a few UN staff from certain death, gave them hope and ultimately a country they now call their own. Above all else we fed the children where other aircraft operators could not or would not go, and as we turn 20 so to the children we fed that day in Waat. A more nobler cause - there is none. On ne pouvait décrire la vue et l odeur dont nous avons été témoins à Waat, essayer de le faire serait futile. La vue des enfants vivants avec des ventres ballonnés étendus auprès de leurs parents décédés tandis que les vautours se disputaient au-dessus de leurs corps et parfois s en nourrissant également, des personnes trop faibles pour venir vers l avion tandis que l ombre des vautours planait toujours au-dessus, attendant leur tour pour atterrir et festoyer. C était une scène accablante qui s est inscrite de façon indélébile dans ma mémoire. Pendant les trente jours suivants nous effectuions trois rotations par jour à Waat et, lentement, cette cheminée noire est disparue. Le 10 mars 1994, sept mois après le début des activités de cette compagnie, le cycle de la mort et de la faim s est terminé pour des millions d enfants et leurs parents. Lors que nous volions vers ces régions éloignées et inaccessibles du Sud le monde s est enfin levé et a pris connaissance des événements. Le reste, comme ils le disent, fait partie de l histoire, mais je puis vous dire cela sans l ombre d un doute, qu avec la persévérance et les efforts monumentaux de centaines d hommes et de femmes qui travaillent pour cette grande compagnie chaque jour, nous avons fait une énorme différence, peut-être plus que toute autre organisation en ayant opéré dans ces régions. 14 DAC Aviation Internationale Ltée is federally incorporated in Canada allowing the company to develop key relationships with OEMs including Volvo, Field Aviation, General Electric Aircraft Engines and Bombardier. 21 A Turning Point: DAC Brings the Dash 8 to African Aid Operations F or DAC Aviation, the introduction of Bombardier s Dash 8 series aircraft marked a turning point in the organization s history. The company acquired its first Dash series aircraft in June of The decision for the introduction of the Bombardier platform to the existing fleet was based on foresight of a paradigm shift in humanitarian operations. Prior to the introduction of the Dash 8 aircraft, DAC Aviation s operations were heavily based on cargo transportation via their fleet of de Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft. In 1999, the ability to move UN personnel from A to B in war torn areas was difficult due to the virtually inexistent road network. With a lack of suitable ground transportation, humanitarian organizations required aircraft to get doctors and medicine to war torn areas including Sudan and the Congo. Being a non pressurized aircraft, with troop style seats, DAC s existing fleet of Buffalo aircraft was ill suited for the transportation of human resources. What the Dash 8 offered over the Buffalo was a modernized way of carrying passengers with access to restrooms, air conditioning, a pressurized cabin, while STOL capabilities allowed for take-off and landing in the harshest of environments. It was a risk, as industry opinion was that a 16 million dollar commercial aircraft would not survive in the harsh and hostile environments of Africa.
