7 We are talking about musical instruments as tools : designing pianos and began manufacturing furniture in In 1954, the company s metallurgical experience, including the production of steel frames for pianos, allowed it to manufacture motorbike parts. This technology transfer was fairly unilateral. Nowadays the Yamaha Corporation and Yamaha Motor are totally separate companies, each with its own design offices, the former currently producing sports equipment, furniture, audio and video equipment for both private and professional customers and, of course, musical instruments. Elle se matérialise, dès 1951, avec la création des écoles-magasins, et trouve sa continuité dans la pédagogie Yamaha 2 et le soutien aux artistes. Le design est l outil qui doit permettre d aboutir à cette accessibilité et à cette transmission. one means facing up to the body s limitations; to the way it will be used which determines the admissible and suitable shapes - in other words the archetypes. The changes in musical tastes, the growing number of listeners and the creation of venues designed for them, along with the way people wander from one technology to another are all elements which have fed into centuries of tests and drawings, ending up with these archetypal shapes. The musical instrument is a tool which is used and produced in ways which come about as a result of what we can feel, it is as much of an experience for the person listening to it as for the person who is using it. The instrumentalist s knowhow is entirely linked to the way s/he plays and thus to the shape of his or her instrument, which is itself partly determined by the system used to produce and amplify the sound. So playing with the shapes of the instrument is a very tricky matter, it is not just instrumentalists who are naturally, necessarily conservative, the same also goes for manufacturers, whose point of view is conditioned by a technological approach to the instrument. The design department, known as the Product Design Laboratory (PDL), was founded in Hamamatsu, the Yamaha Corporation s headquarters, in the early 1960s. So design acted rather like a lever for competitiveness, allowing the company to expand into the European and American markets and, ever since the very early days, it has always occupied a key place in the company s decision-making process. Today, Yamaha PDL is made up of twenty-seven designers, twenty per cent of whom are Europeans. The studio is in charge of designing musical instruments, audio/ video and sports equipment. Although there are exchanges of ideas relating to materials between the Yamaha Corporation and its subsidiary Yamaha Livingtec (kitchens and bathrooms), there is a technological cross-fertilisation which mainly takes place within the PDL. The PDL s role is to handle a very wide range of different projects and the designers then act as intermediaries between the various divisions. The manufacturing of musical instruments calls on a variety of manufacturing processes and very wide-ranging know-how, from which the designers draw a part of their creativity. Making sure that people can and do continue playing music Torakusu Yamaha, the founder of Yamaha, was originally a watchmaker by trade. Back in the 1880s, when he found himself repairing the American-manufactured organ belonging to the school in Hamatsu, the town where he lived, he admired the sounds it produced, but he thought he could do just as well, if not better, in terms of design and manufacturing. So he created the Nippon Gakki brand in Within just a few years it had become one of the leaders in the manufacturing first of organs and harmoniums and then pianos-hence the firm s logo which shows three instruments, symbolised by three tuning forks, crossing each other inside a circle. Torakusu Yamaha wanted to make sure that every school in Japan had an organ. Indeed, he had the utopian ambition of making the playing of music widely accessible, and he wanted to use his company to achieve this goal. The aim was to support the teaching of music by providing high-quality instruments. It was a matter of aiming at lofty intellectual ideals by doing something perceptible. It is the expression of a universal school of thought, similar to a certain kind of humanism which is summarised by the kando 1 spirit, which is the leitmotiv of the current Yamaha company. It was fulfilled, starting in 1951, with the inauguration of the Yamaha shop/school/concert hall concept in Tokyo, and then continued with the Yamaha schools 2 starting in 1954 and also support for artists. Design is a tool which should help us to achieve this accessibility and passing on of skills. SG-7 / 1964 Il en va des instruments de musique comme des outils : en dessiner un, c est se confronter aux limites du corps ; à la pratique qui détermine des formes admises et adaptées : des archétypes. L évolution des goûts musicaux, le nombre grandissant des auditeurs et la création de lieux qui leur soient destinés, l errance technologique sont autant d éléments qui ont nourri des siècles d essais et de dessins, pour aboutir à ces formes archétypales. L instrument de musique est un outil dont l usage et la production résultent du sensible, il constitue autant une expérience pour celui qui l écoute que pour celui qui l utilise. Le savoir-faire de l instrumentiste est entièrement lié à sa pratique et donc à la forme de son instrument, elle-même déterminée, en partie, par le système de production et d amplification du son. Jouer avec les formes de l instrument est donc très délicat : au conservatisme naturel et nécessaire de l instrumentiste s ajoute celui des fabricants, dont le point de vue est conditionné par une approche technologique de l instrument. How and where music is played Sometimes in the process of questioning, research or the setting of the standard, the brand engages in an in-depth design approach. It is through its emblematic objects which have emerged out of a dialogue with the archetype that we are questioning this way of approaching the designing of musical instruments here. Le département de design, appelé Product Design Laboratory (PDL), a été fondé au début des années 1960 à Hamamatsu, siège social de Yamaha Corporation. Le design est alors assimilé à un levier de compétitivité, pour s étendre sur les marchés européens et américains et occupe, dès le départ, une place centrale dans la prise de décisions de l entreprise. Aujourd hui, Yamaha PDL est constitué de vingt-sept designers, dont vingt pour cent d européens. Le studio est en charge du design des instruments de musique, de l audio/vidéo et des équipements de sport. Bien qu il y ait des échanges au point de vue des matériaux entre Yamaha Corporation et sa filiale Yamaha Livingtec (cuisines et salles de bain), c est surtout au sein de PDL que s opère un brassage technologique. PDL est appelé à traiter des projets d une très grande diversité, et les designers servent alors de media entre les différentes divisions. La fabrication d instruments de musique suppose des procédés de fabrication variés et un large savoir-faire, d où les designers tirent une partie de leur créativité. 1964: SG-7 electric guitar The 1960s saw the arrival of rock music in Japan, which manufactured products both for the local market and for export to the United States: cheap copies of electric guitars and basses. Yamaha was the first to stand out by producing a high-quality instrument with its own original shapes. Even so, they were thought out in terms of how the instrument is used. The SG-7 revitalised the standard shape of the Solid Body 3 electric guitar, the emblematic instrument of amplified music. The transverse nature of design at Yamaha Unlike other industrial companies which usually specialise in manufacturing one instrument and confine themselves to the production of a standard, such as the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster or the Steinway grand piano, for instance, the unique thing about Yamaha which really makes the company stand out is that it designs all of the instruments in the symphony orchestra along with a full range of contemporary instruments. By making full use of a full range of know-how manufacturing an organ calls on technologies drawn from metallurgy and cabinetmaking the company diversified. Starting in 1900, it started producing 1983: FM DX-7 synthesiser 4 The DX series was the first series of entirely digital synthesisers. The sound synthesis is based upon FM waveforms, which gives a very precise sound which is characteristic of the music of the early to mid 1980s. This synthesiser simultaneously focuses both an unprecedented technological innovation and a questioning of shapes; as an heir to both the organ and the harmonium, the analogue synthesiser uses the same shapes, it is rather like an upright piano whose feet have been cut off. The miniaturisation provided by FM technology helped to keep the footprint of the DX-7 down as far as possible. The Yamaha system for musical education is based upon three concepts: appropriate teaching, group classes, the development of creativity. 3/ A guitar with a solid body. It produces sounds via microphones which capture and transform the vibrations of the strings into an electrical signal. This signal is then amplified and converted into a sound signal by an amplifier. 4/ A synthesiser is a musical instrument capable of generating and manipulating sounds electronically using wavetables or electronic oscillators which produce waveforms. C est la marque d une considération pour la diversité des contextes d utilisation. 2008: A Key For You, collection of keyboards With A Key For You, the latest product from the Yamaha design and research studio, presented in Milan and then at the Demain C est Aujourd hui (Part 2) (Tomorrow s World Today, part 2) exhibition at the 2008 Saint Étienne design biennial, the way that music is played is contextualised. It is slotted into the things we do every day. In a bar, it generates a space which brings about meetings, with A Key Between People. When travelling, it becomes a notepad allowing you to compose on the move, with A Key For A Journey, thus offering a response to the question of mobility. However this is an old question, as is shown by the sleeves, showing the travel violins used by 18th century Meistersingers, as we can see in the collections of the Cité de la Musique, at La Villette in Paris. In order to find an answer to the problem of the durability of objects, the design studio is attempting to introduce timeless shapes, with simple, measured geometry. Noble materials, such as wood, reinforce the emotional relationship with the instrument and give an almost archaic aspect to products which, even so, are highly technologically elaborate such as A Key As A Gift or A Key Like Jeans. The question of integration into the living environment ties in with personal and hedonistic concerns. The instrument comes out of the way music is played in concerts to link up with more intimate contexts. Mobility and the diffusion of sound in a room determine the design of A Key For Living. At the Yamaha PDL they talk about an environment for the musical instrument in order to designate all of the elements which are part of the definition of an instrument: the musician, his or her audience, the place where s/he plays and the quality of the music. With A Key For You, they are talking about concerns focussed on the instrumentalist within a conventional way of playing: playability, the quality of the sound, the way it is used in the studio, at rehearsals, in concert, etc : synthétiseur 4 FM DX-7 La série DX est la première série de synthétiseurs entièrement numériques. La synthèse du son est fondée sur les ondes FM, ce qui permet d obtenir un son très précis caractéristique du style musical du même nom. Ce synthétiseur concentre à la fois une innovation technologique sans précédent, et une remise en question formelle. Héritier de l orgue et de l harmonium, le synthétiseur analogique en reprend les formes. C est une sorte de piano droit auquel on aurait coupé les pieds. La miniaturisation apportée par la technologie FM permet de réduire au maximum l encombrement du DX-7. Il définit le type du synthétiseur tel qu on le connaît aujourd hui, à quelques détails près, c està-dire contenu dans un parallélépipède, lequel est divisée en deux parties : la partie clavier et la partie sélection des sons. Cet objet constitue un marqueur de son époque, tant du point de vue des sons qu il produit que de l esthétique qu il met en œuvre. Formes anguleuses et tranchantes, écran digital à diodes rouges, dépouillement et dématérialisation des commandes : elles sont traitées sous forme graphiques, les bouton étant logés sous une peaux souple qui recouvre la surface du boitier Il porte en germe cette esthétique robotique, maîtrisée et technologiste, dans l esprit de ce que l on a appelé le design High-tech, et que l on a pu voir, par exemple dans certaines productions du designer Richard Sapper ou de l architecte Norman Foster. C est un objet simplifié et accessible tant au niveau de l usage que du prix, qui est assez peu élevé. Il permet également une certaine mobilité et une souplesse d usage sur scène et dans le milieu domestique, du fait de son poids, bien inférieur à celui de ses prédécesseurs : Tenori-on On a vu la forme s abstraire du système sonore et devenir une interface. Restait à abstraire cette interface du souvenir d un ancien mode de production du son et d une quelconque référence à un instrument existant. Il s agit d inventer une gestuelle liée à l outil numérique. À la question de l interface, le Tenori-on répond de la manière la plus basique : c est un simple écran. Suivant la façon dont il est caressé, il produit différentes figures graphiques. A chaque figure s associe un son. Il est en cela un objet de sa génération, très proche finalement dans sa gestuelle de produits comme le iphone d Apple. 1987: the WX-7 MIDI 5 digital controller Technical progress made in synthetic sounds led to the raising of the question of the validity of the shape of the keyboard, which up until then had been associated with the synthesiser. If the instrument no longer contains the apparatus used for the mechanical production and amplification of the sound, what is an instrument defined solely by its playability? Experiments on the question were carried out on a new type of MIDI controller, a synthetic digital musical instrument which borrows the movements used to play it from the saxophone. It is a kind of ultra-ergonomic movement sensor whose aesthetic is detached from the shape of its original instrument to such an extent that it is difficult to say what it is used for at first glance : A key for you, collection de claviers Avec A Key for you, dernière production du studio de design et recherche de Yamaha, présentée à Milan puis à la biennale de design de Saint-Étienne 2008 dans l exposition Demain c est aujourd hui (Part 2), on contextualise la pratique musicale. On l insère dans une pratique quotidienne. Dans un bar, il génère un espace facilitant les rencontres, avec A Key between people. En voyage, il devient un bloc-notes pour compositeur nomade, avec A Key for a journey, offrant ainsi une réponse à la question de la mobilité. Cette question est cependant ancienne, comme le montre les pochettes, ces violons de voyage des maîtres de chant du dix-neuvième siècle, comme on peut en voir dans les collections de la Cité de la musique, à la Villette. Pour répondre au problème de la durabilité des objets, le studio de design tente d introduire des formes intemporelles, à la géométrie simple et mesurée. Des matériaux nobles, comme le bois, renforcent la relation affective avec l instrument et donnent un aspect presque archaïque à des produits pourtant très élaborés technologiquement comme A key as a gift ou A key like jeans. La question de l intégration à l habitat recoupe des préoccupations personnelles et hédonistes. L instrument sort d une pratique musicale de concert pour rejoindre des contextes plus intimes. La mobilité et la diffusion du son dans une pièce déterminent le dessin de A key for living. On parle chez Yamaha PDL «d environnement» de l instrument de musique pour désigner l ensemble des éléments qui entrent dans la définition d un instrument : le musicien, son audience, le lieu où il joue et la qualité de la musique. Avec A key for you, on parle des préoccupations centrées sur l instrumentiste dans une pratique classique : celle de la jouabilité, de la qualité du son, de l usage en studio, en répétition, en concert 1997: SV-100 Silent Violin This same formal economy was to be found once again a few years later in the SV-100 Silent Violin (1997), although this was the culmination of a completely opposing point of view. This is a hybrid object, based upon a mechanical system used to produce sound vibrations, relayed by a digital capture/ pre-amplification device. The shape is treated as such, in a hybrid way. It is as though it had been stripped down as far as possible and then, as signs, the archetypal elements of the original violin had been grafted onto it. The chin rest and the protection for the body of the object, which have a utilitarian function, have been given a shape which integrates into the known design of the violin. This instrument can be used directly with headphones, for rehearsals and at home, or amplified in concert. This is the mark of a consideration for the wide range of contexts in which it is likely to be used. The design studio is thus attempting to explore and extend the musical instrument s environment, with the aim of achieving accessibility and universal openness to the playing of music which is what characterises the brand s identity : le contrôleur numérique midi 5 WX-7 Les progrès techniques effectués dans les sons synthétiques amènent à se poser la question de la validité de la forme du clavier, associée jusque-là au synthétiseur. Il s agit d une sorte de capteur de mouvements ultra-ergonomique dont l esthétique se détache de la forme de son instrument d origine. À tel point qu il est difficile de dire quel en est l usage au premier regard. 2001: Tenori-on We have seen the shape cut loose from the sound system and also becoming an interface. All that remained was to cut this interface loose from the memory of an old method of producing sound, and any reference at all to an existing instrument. It was all about inventing a series of movements linked to the digital tool. The Tenori-on offers the most basic possible answer to the question of the interface: it is just a screen.
