6 Annapolis Valley Regional School Board Dave Galloway, Horton High School Kings Local Dave Galloway is a Technology Education teacher at Horton High School who supports learning in authentic settings, and challenges students using real-world situations. He works with the Horton O 2 team and students, supporting community-based learning experiences such as multi-day adventure learning trips to Kejimkujik National Park. He has even taken a wilderness first aid course to help support these trips, and has supported other teachers taking this course. Colleagues who worked with him at West Kings District High School in previous years recall how he would give his film and video students assignments that involved donating their tech services to community groups. Dave also commits many hours outside of the classroom as a coach for boys and girls rugby, and he has given untold volunteer hours building sets for school musicals and events that connect the school and community. Jonny Marshall, Bridgetown Regional High School Annapolis Local Jonny Marshall is the Options and Opportunities (O 2 ) lead teacher at Bridgetown Regional High School. He has a passion for teaching, entrepreneurship, and contributing to the community. As a former chef, Jonny has combined his culinary training with teaching by operating Burning Elements Catering, a school-based catering business through which O 2 students learn about the planning, organization, and professionalism involved in running a business, in addition to specific training in food handling and preparation. The company has been called on to cater private events, meetings, and even a celebration dinner attended by Premier Stephen McNeil. There s also a DJ business that entertains at school dances and local events, and a print shop that offers custom hats, T-shirts, and mugs. And if that weren t enough real-world experience, BRHS O 2 students also organize an annual craft show and entrepreneurial expo. All of these enterprises help students get hands-on work experience and a job title on their resumé, while creating new business opportunities and services for the wider community. 4

7 Karen Wallace, Falmouth District School Hants West Local As principal of Falmouth District School, Karen Wallace is deeply committed to building connections between school and community. Karen serves on numerous boards and committees for community projects and organizations, giving generously of her time and talents. She welcomes the community to the school through initiatives such as an outdoor skating rink on the school grounds, free for all to use during winter evenings and weekends. Karen has also built a strong relationship between her school and the Windsor Elms, a long-term care facility nearby. Students make regular visits to the Elms to volunteer and to perform songs. The school also hosts Grand Friend Tea Parties where students invite grandparents, friends from the Elms, or other important elders in their lives to socialize and share stories with students. Because of Karen s efforts, many Falmouth District School students choose to become regular volunteers in their free time. As an educator, Karen Wallace recognizes the tremendous value that community projects and service learning can bring to students and the community as a whole. 5

8 Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board Elizabeth Sehl, Dr. T. L. Sullivan Junior High School Northside-Victoria Local Elizabeth Sehl is an inspiring individual who, throughout her 30-plus years of teaching, continues to provide a constant delivery of student development and engagement through service learning. Mrs. Sehl builds into her professional practice a collaborative and community-minded approach making great use of limited community resources, services, and donors. Her modest approach facilitates a progressive, high-support learning environment valuing diversity, and a rich mix of student talents, backgrounds, and experiences. Each day Mrs. Sehl presents a positive work and learning environment in which all students and staff thrive. She has annually persevered with opening hearts by leading initiatives involving students in projects focused on community services such as Christmas Daddies, primarily aiming to ensure that each student has school supplies, a Christmas gift, and that no family is without necessities. Elizabeth s reach into our communities is extended by her literacy initiatives such as reading programs and book clubs that are designed to open minds by placing books into homes where there otherwise would not be. She unselfishly opens doors unknowingly on behalf of students by giving exhaustive time working public speaking into her curriculum where students gain proud moments and confidence as learners from sharing personal challenges within a safe and welcoming context. 6

9 Clara Wadman, Glace Bay High School Cape Breton Local Clara, the lead teacher with Glace Bay High s O 2 program, has established partnerships with local businesses and service organizations that benefit students, employers, school, and the greater community. Work placements of students at the Old Town Hall and Harvest House have resulted in a greater involvement and support of these community groups by our school population. Hat Day at school grew from the desire of Ms. Wadman s O 2 students who wanted to help others. Programs offered by the Town Hall and Harvest House are two of the beneficiaries of this initiative. Ms. Wadman s students were involved with the clean-up and beautification of a local abandoned lot. These students cleaned the property, painted an adjacent building wall with a mural of the original building, planted grass and flowers, and constructed a walkthrough for pedestrians. They worked closely with the owner of the building and lot, and had support from community members who voluntarily stored their supplies and tools, treated them to lunches, etc. The recognition of a job well done was appreciated by the community and stands as a testament to the community-mindedness of Ms. Wadman and her class. Her classroom provides authentic learning experiences that connect students with the real world. She is an exemplary teacher who provides all her students with a real sense of belonging within their school and the broader community a true role model to staff and students alike. 7

10 Chignecto-Central Regional School Board Shana MacPherson, Debert Elementary Colchester-East Hants Local Shana MacPherson began teaching grade 2 at Debert Elementary School three years ago. Her positive impact on students and their families has been immediate, heartfelt, and welcomed with open arms. Shana has created a community garden at her school, invited and scheduled families to care for this garden over the summer months, and used the resulting harvest to teach students healthy eating habits. She hosts an annual classroom museum to which she invites parents, grandparents, and other community members to attend, allowing her students to showcase their history. Shana also helps to coordinate Literacy Week, this year arranging for community members to come and share their favourite childhood stories with a classroom. Shana has also organized a Green Team, motivating over 40 students to become educated, involved, advocates of recycling, composting, and environmental issues. She takes her students to the local Shannex facility to read to seniors and is arranging for the installation of benches around the school garden to create an outdoor classroom. Colleagues, supervisors, her students and their families agree Shana MacPherson exemplifies the 2015 Education Week theme of Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors! Kathy Wells, Cumberland North Academy Cumberland Local Cumberland North Academy has SOLE respect for Self, Others, Learning and Environment and this SOLE comes directly from principal, Kathy Wells. All those who have the opportunity to spend time with Kathy instantly know that she cares. She is a true role model for her students, their families, and the broader community showing understanding, empathy, and true respect for all people. She welcomes her students with open arms, warm hugs, and a keen interest in trying new ideas. Kathy works tirelessly to connect her school and students to the local community through the YMCA, the United Way, and the local Food Bank. She inspires the staff and students to reach out to the local community and to bring community members into the school through multicultural festivals, guest speakers, and guest musicians. Through the WITS Program, the students have connected with local RCMP to learn more about and combat bullying. Kathy is widely recognized as the community ambassador for her school, encouraging and supporting the connections with the local community, all in an effort to give her students the best education possible. 8

11 Karri Ann Noel, West Pictou Consolidated School Pictou Local Karri Ann Noel always has time. Whether she has 6 projects on the go or 16, if you ask her for a moment, she has it. If you ask her to answer a question, she will. That openness and easy ability to make everyone feel like they are the only person important to her is what her colleagues say make her the perfect recipient of an Education Week Award. Karri Ann is a Resource Teacher at West Pictou Consolidated School. During her tenure she has made a real difference in the lives of her students, their families, and her colleagues. Through her leadership, a grant was obtained from the Aberdeen Health Foundation that will allow students access to technology that will help them build on their life skills. The grant will also allow for students to participate in outings that will take them into their local community, allowing for the development and enhancement of relationships. Kari Ann is also responsible for the creation of a girls club at West Pictou. The club gives girls who may have difficulty with social interaction and making friends an opportunity to participate in social activities, while learning independence and appropriate social communication. Love is love It s all about the kids! If Karri Ann had a personal theme, this would be it. 9

12 Conseil scolaire acadien provincial Lianne Comeau, École secondaire de Clare CSANE Local Lianne Comeau est sélectionnée pour enseignante de l année. Lianne remplie bien les critères du thème cette année qui est : Les écoles communautaires citoyennes: ouverture de coeur, ouverture d esprit, ouverture des portes. Au cours de cette année et au long de sa carrière à l École secondaire de Clare, elle a démontré qu elle a une ouverture de coeur en tendant l oreille à des élèves qui ont besoin de se faire entendre. Elle a démontré qu elle a une ouverture d esprit en entreprenant divers projets avec ses élèves. Parmi ces projets on retrouve coudre des couvertures pour aînée, la production de vignettes portant sur la construction identitaire pour la FCE et d autres projets de classe dans des domaines tels que la mécanique et la fabrication. Si vous avez accès au Courrier de la Nouvelle-Écosse, vous l avez assurément vu en visite communautaire avec ses élèves. Pour ce qui traite d ouverture de portes, elle fait l effort pour placer ses élèves en stage dans des domaines qui peuvent mener à des emplois futurs. Chantal Samson-Haley, CSANE Local Dans ses trois ans avec nous, Chantal a partagé sa passion du soccer avec nos élèves en leur offrant des cours de soccer après les classes. Ceci a permis à des jeunes de mieux connaitre le sport, développer des habiletés de leadership et prélever des fonds pour l achat d uniformes et d équipements. Son travail au niveau du comité de soccer exige beaucoup de travail. L équipe fait la gestion des sports, des entraineurs et des finances. Chantal fait du bénévole au programme, aide aux devoirs. Elle fait partie de l équipe- CADRE. Chantal organise son 2 e voyage de fin d études scolaires en Europe. Elle est dans sa première année comme intervenant d IPLE et elle suit des cours de maitrise en ressource. Elle est toujours à la recherche de moyens d enrichir l expérience scolaire et parascolaire des jeunes afin qu ils se sentent engagés dans notre communauté scolaire. Chantal travaille pour maintenir des relations saines. 10

13 Eric Shantz, École Bois-Joli CSANE Local Depuis son arrivée au sein du conseil scolaire acadien provincial, en 1997, M. Eric Shantz a toujours su être un pilier pour ses élèves et pour la communauté de l École Bois-Joli. En tant qu enseignant d éducation physique, il réussit grâce à son implication auprès de différents organismes à impliquer de façon considérable la communauté dans l école. En plus d être l organisateur de la Course Terry Fox, de l évènement sautons en coeur, d être impliquer pour le défi Pierre Lavoie, d organiser les olympiades pour l école, d être entraineur et organisateur pour les jeux d Acadie, M. Shantz est le président du comité du terrain de jeux pour l école. M. Shantz a réussi à recruter auprès des parents des élèves un nombre impressionnant de parents qui veulent s investir dans l élaboration et la construction d un terrain de jeux «écologique». Finalement, grâce à lui, l école a reçu une bourse de 2500 $ à cause de la participation du club des coureurs de Bois-Joli aux «youth running series». Nous étions l école qui avait le plus d élèves qui se présentaient aux course. M. Eric sait comment faire déplacer une foule!!! Il est impressionnant de voir que malgré les années, M. Eric Shantz n a pas perdu son enthousiasme et sa passion et qu il continue à être impliqué auprès de la communauté de l école Bois-Joli et même plus. 11

14 Halifax Regional School Board Gilles Boudreau, Brookhouse Elementary Dartmouth Local Gilles Boudreau is an excellent teacher who is held in high regard by all members of the Brookhouse Elementary school community. He works diligently on a daily basis to ensure the students at Brookhouse school have the best French programming possible. The respect students have for Mr. Boudreau is evident when you walk into his classroom and see how his students enjoy learning a second language. He does an amazing job with the curriculum and keeping students engaged and excited about learning. Gilles contributes to the school in countless ways in spite of teaching a circuit and having to travel between two schools every day. He is a key contributor for the Christmas concert where his musical talents and organizational skills help the music teachers deliver a wonderful show every year. Gilles also plays a huge role in helping our young students become leaders through the PEBS program. He works with students to lead the PEBS assembly each month and to show them how to be contributing members of society. He has also taken the lead on the school robotics team. Gilles has given up countless hours of his time in order to build a foundation for this new and exciting club. Mr. Boudreau is a terrific person and an amazing teacher who has had a lasting impact on our students and school community. Brian DeMone, Sackville Heights Junior High Halifax County Local Brian is an outstanding physical education teacher and athletic director. He brings his positive energy and enthusiasm to his program every day, and inspires everyone to live healthy, active lifestyles. Brian works tirelessly to connect the physical education program to opportunities in the community and to bring community activities into the school. For example, he is starting an archery club with help from the Archery Association of Nova Scotia (he is being certified to instruct this through his outdoor Education Masters); he purchased fun and interesting P. E. equipment for students to use at lunch and during class such as a spike ball, slacklining, and Omni ball; and he opens the gym every Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for students and their families to come and enjoy organized activities. Brian organizes school trips to Martock and the skating oval each year and brings in guests to teach students kick boxing, dance, and yoga. He is amazing! 12

15 Laura Kennedy, Sir Charles Tupper Elementary Halifax City Local Ms. Kennedy is an enthusiastic educator who challenges students to become critical thinkers by engaging them in learning experiences that extend their understanding of social responsibility and heightens their sense of community and global connections. Ms. Kennedy is one of the teachers in the school who pioneered CHAT to the Future (Care and Hope through Adoption and Technology). Under her leadership our students continue to contribute to providing the most urgent and basic needs to orphaned students in a school in Uganda. Both schools share experiences about each other and their country via Skype sessions. When one views these moving and joyful exchanges connecting learners across continents, it is evident that this initiative promoted by Ms. Kennedy has opened minds, hearts, and doors and echoes the quote We can do no great things only small things with great love. 16 South Shore Regional School Board Sandra Himmelman, Hebbville Academy Lunenburg County Local Sandra Himmelman exemplifies Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors. She demonstrates an open heart by providing a safe place for students during recess and lunch, often providing those students with food and friendly conversation. She demonstrates an open mind by instilling in her students the ability to think of others in different cultures who don t have the same opportunities. For example, she took her Social Justice Committee members to the We Day 2015 conference in Halifax. At the conference her committee members learned from motivational speakers and had the opportunity to share the experience with thousands of other students from all over the Maritimes. Sandra opens many doors for families in need. She and her Social Justice Committee members do so much by organizing fundraisers, such as hat and PJ days, Rafiki bracelet sales, coffee houses, bake sales, and the sale of coffee to school staff. Proceeds have helped aid a foster child in her education as well as purchase goats for needy families in Africa. We believe that Sandra Himmelman is a deserving candidate and will represent Lunenburg County well as this year s recipient of the Education Week Teacher Award. 14

17 Cameron Strong, North Queens Community School Queens Local Cameron Strong has been an active leader and mentor at North Queens Community School. He is the Options and Opportunities (O 2 ) teacher, as well as the Co-operative Education teacher. His personal mandate has been to help students become active participants within their community. Over the years he and students have created projects including community benches, community garden at the local Heritage House; and each fall Cameron and his students support the local exhibition by preparing the exhibition grounds by painting buildings, clearing debris, and organizing booths. Cameron is also a leader in North Queens Behaviour Support Program and has taken the initiative to bring a water vending machine into the school for students and community use. He uses the operation of this vending machine as a learning opportunity for students, replenishing supplies, and collecting funds. We believe that Cameron Strong is a deserving candidate and will represent Queens County well as this year s recipient of the Education Week Teacher Award. 15

18 Strait Regional School Board Robert MacDonald, Richmond Education Centre/Academy Richmond Local Through his classroom practices, volunteer initiatives, and coaching capacity, Mr. MacDonald has been wholeheartedly committed to the children and youth of Richmond County. In all his roles, he encourages and inspires Richmond Education Centre/Academy students to work hard and succeed to the best of their abilities. As a teacher and coach, Robert strives to give all students an opportunity to develop and use initiative, leadership, and judgement. This approach encourages students to take an active and meaningful role in both their studies and sport. His commitment to his students and school community is unsurpassed. Robert has been an outstanding role model to both his students and community and is very deserving of the Education Week Award recognition. The entire Richmond Education Centre/Academy school community is truly appreciative of his dedicated efforts. Mike MacIsaac, St. Mary s Education Centre/Academy Guysborough County Local As the Options and Opportunities Lead Teacher and Co-operative Education Teacher at St. Mary s Education Centre/Academy, Mr. MacIsaac strives to provide students with opportunities to interact with the school and the community in which they live. In the school, students participate in several school-based service learning initiatives including the Fluoride Rinse Program, the Breakfast Program, and the building of and caring for, a school garden. In the community, Mike s students have been engaged in and benefitted from service-learning opportunities such as organizing and planning activities for the residents at the local nursing home. As part of the Options and Opportunities Program, Mike has developed a strong network of valuable partnerships with local businesses who have opened their doors to students. Business owners have graciously shared their time and expertise with students in presentations and on-site training. Students have significantly benefitted from handson experiences completed through co-op placements with local businesses and have enhanced their employability skills. Without a doubt, Mike has worked diligently to support student learning and success by engaging students and the community through service learning, community projects, and co-operative education. 16

19 Tiffany MacNeil, H. M. MacDonald Elementary Antigonish Local Ms. MacNeil is a dedicated teacher who embodies this year s theme in her school and community. At the school level, Tiffany s commitment and leadership has been integral to the success of numerous service learning and extracurricular activities. Last year, she supervised the H. M. MacDonald Student Leadership Group s fundraisers for the IWK Children s Hospital and the local food bank, as well as visits to the local nursing home and the Pink in the Rink initiative. Tiffany has worked tirelessly to provide direction and guidance as well as to raise awareness among students in relation to International Child Labour. Under her supervision, students created informative PowerPoint presentations that were used to teach their peers about this important global issue. Through her weekly meetings with the student leaders, Tiffany empowers them to take responsibility and be accountable for the community projects they choose while encouraging their social activism and awareness. At the community level, Tiffany has been a key coordinator for the A Playground for Every Body project at Antigonish Education Centre. This project s focus is on creating an accessible communitybased playground for everyone to enjoy. Tiffany has been actively involved from the project s inception sharing her skills in the areas of design, media, fundraising, promotion, and writing applications for financial support, to name a few. She also finds time to serve as a leader for the local 4-H Club. Through her innovative teaching practices, Tiffany is supporting student development and success by providing students with multiple opportunities to take action and become engaged in thoughtful projects that are making a positive difference in school and in the community. Rob Ryan, Tamarac Education Centre Inverness Local In both his in-school practices and community involvement, Mr. Ryan is a firm believer in the traditional African proverb it takes a village to raise a child. Rob truly believes schools embody communities through open hearts, open minds, and open doors. Whether it was supporting students through consultations with colleagues or community agency partners, he has always been available to discuss students needs and share his ideas on how to work, and build a rapport, with youth and in particular those experiencing specific challenges. As Guidance Counselor at Tamarac Education Centre, Rob s efforts have helped to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. He always has his door open to students and encourages positive social interactions by allowing them to have their recess and lunch in the guidance area. His professional leadership and compassionate abilities have also been instrumental in his role as Crisis Intervention Coordinator for the Strait Regional School Board for the past number of years. During this time, he has provided leadership to the Regional Crisis Intervention Team as well as School Crisis Intervention Teams as they dealt with various situations that significantly impacted students and school communities. Rob s calming presence and down-to-earth approach have provided a pillar of support to students, staff, and the broader school community. Tamarac Education Centre has also benefitted from Rob s skills as sound and light technician, which have enhanced student performances and school events. Rob truly cares about children and youth and is always there for them regardless of how big or small their concerns. Rob s commitment and dedication to bettering the lives of students and school communities makes him a very worthy recipient of a 2015 Education Week Award. 17

20 Tri-County Regional School Board Adam Aldred, Barrington Municipal High School Shelburne County Local Adam has been involved with the O 2 program for 5 years and has been the lead O 2 teacher for the past 4 years. Adam s hard work and commitment to the program has had a tremendous impact on the students who have been fortunate to be involved. He has enabled students to experience success both inside and outside of the classroom, developing the skills necessary through meaningful classroom instruction and hands-on learning experiences. Over the years, Adam has established and developed strong working relationships with employers in the area to provide valuable learning experiences to students enrolled in the program. He works hard at making sure students are matched with employers that will provide positive learning experiences in student areas of interest. To show our school s appreciation he had the students coordinate a community celebration for community partners. This involved everything from the invites, planning, cooking, emceeing, and creation of plaques for each of them. In addition, he has involved his students in many community projects to assist other schools and community groups. Some of these projects include building benches for a newly developed playground, assisting local elementary schools with the construction of green houses, building props for elementary school plays, supplying personnel for public events needing volunteers, letter writing to people needing support around the globe, Christmas charity projects for children in the community that are in need, etc. At the school level, his students are active in assisting with any odd jobs that staff need assistance with from fixing things to building shelves. In addition, over the years they have completed school grounds improvement projects including the construction of a gazebo, barns, and a shade shelter for an outdoor classroom. Adam s hard work and commitment has had a positive impact on the students in the O 2 program, providing them valuable experiences that help to develop them into wellrounded, mature, responsible, contributing members of society. Our school and community are appreciative of Adam and his commitment to the O 2 program! 18
