Operation Red Nose is back in action this holiday season. The volunteers will be standing by to make sure that base staff can go out and enjoy a few drinks during this year s Christmas parties and still get home safe. When using this service, don t forget to leave your donations for rides you receive, as your money will benefit local youth centered organizations/clubs. Last year Operation Red Nose earned 2.7k in donations and is hoping to increase this number this season. Last year we tripled in size, so we are hoping to increase again the number of volunteers and donations. It promotes safety, it s a good way for members, military and associates to help one another during the holiday season and keep everybody safe, commented Op Red Nose committee member, Darlene Schulz. 2 2 November 23 novembre 2012 Essa News Santa Comes to Angus! The Base Borden Community Council provided a float full of smiling, waving kids for the Angus Santa Claus Parade. The kids of The Door Youth Centre celebrate Christmas from all over the world. Photos: Leighsah Millward-Kyte, The children and families of Angus wave enthusiastically as Santa goes by on his float. Many children watching had friends participating in the parade as many groups from Angus were represented such as baseball, hockey, cadets and dance amongst others. Santa made his long awaited appearance on behalf of the Angus Firefighter s Association. My favorite part of the parade is Santa Claus! I am excited to see him! commented Mia Dandurand of Angus. Pancake Dinner with Santa at Pine River Elementary School Pancake dinner with Santa on Tuesday, December 4th from 5-7:30 p.m at Pine River Elementary School. Dinner includes pancakes, bacon, juice and McDonald's coffee. Adults are $5 and children are $3.50. 3 November 23 novembre A beacon of light Phare lumineux Abeacon of light for the holiday season was lit outside Canadian Forces Base Borden / CFSTG headquarters on November 19, The Christmas tree was officially lit by LT(N) Chris Sutherland and his two children, Reese age, 7 and Carys age, 3, as a symbol for all families with members deployed to foreign countries from CFB Borden. "It is never easy to have a family member deployed," said LT(N) Sutherland, "especially over the holiday season when the thoughts of our loved ones are so near and dear." His daughter Carys said, "I hope Mommy can see the tree from there." LCol (WSE) Soomyung Sutherland, is currently deployed to Kabul as part of the Canadian mission to Afghanistan. "This Christmas tree symbolizes a light in the darkness for families when their loved ones are away," said Colonel Tammy Harris. "The tree is lit as a reminder of those members deployed, and of their families here at home." The Christmas tree will stay lit throughout the holiday season. By: Rob Bungay, Public Affairs Officer On November 07, 2012 Rory MacKinnon, owner/operator of the McDonald s restaurant in Angus presented a cheque for $1000 to the Borden Family Resource Centre. The cheque was presented as part of McDonald s 30-year anniversary in the local area. We are very thankful to Rory for this wonderful donation, said Ms Line Sorel, Director of the Borden Family Resource Centre (BFRC). This donation will be used to enhance the programs, and support that we provide to our families of the Defence Team here at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden. In 1982, when the first McDonald s was established in the Angus / Alliston area, it was the first McDonald's on any Armed Forces Base in the world at the time. Many past military families had benefited from the employment at this past location and others at the current one. As part of the further commitment to the community by McDonald s, the BFRC staff and children were surprised the next day by a visit by Ronald McDonald himself. 4 4 November 23 novembre 2012 Changes at the Buell Centre Some of you may have noticed a change to the front desk staff at the Buell Fitness and Aquatics Centre this past week. For many years now, Borden has been fortunate enough to have contracted Commissionaires responsible for the security and access to the facility. Due to recent budgetary constraints, PSP has decided to change the staff and will soon have staff of the Non-Public Funds employees responsible for meeting, greeting and control of the facility. These future Gym Attendants will be PSP employees and they will be happy to assist all participants in their use of the facility. The decision to terminate the contract with the Commissionaires was not made lightly, as the service the corps provided to the Buell Centre is long-standing and highly valued. It is with a heavy heart that we wave farewell to those who served us with dedication, professionalism and personal commitment to the morale and welfare of our Canadian Forces personnel and their families. In the mean time, this change is not without impact on the current Fitness & Sports staff members who must pull together to work additional hours as we progress through the hiring process, with interviews ongoing. Despite the initial realization of the size of the Commissionaires contributions, the PSP staff have risen to the challenge and accomplished this task with a wonderful sense of cooperation. Entre-temps, ce changement n est pas sans se répercuter sur les membres du personnel du Centre Buell; ceux-ci doivent en effet mettre les bouchées doubles pendant le processus de sélection des nouveaux employés, notamment en raison des entrevues qui prennent place en ce moment. Bien que, tout d abord, il ait été difficile de se passer des commissionnaires, compte tenu de l importance de leur travail, le personnel des PSP a surmonté le défi et accompli la tâche qui l attendait avec une coopération exemplaire. Meet our fitness leaders Voici nos monitrices de conditionnement physique Fitness Leader, Kathy Dimakos, is a 34 year old mother from Barrie. She began her career in fitness with a degree in Fitness and Lifestyle Management from George Brown College. While in Toronto, she taught spin classes at U of T and then went to work as a personal trainer. After a move to Barrie, a friend of hers who was working as a Fitness Instructor here at Borden told her about a similar job opportunity on the base. Excited by the prospect, Kathy applied and from she worked as a Fitness Instructor at CFB Borden. After a decision to start a family with her husband, Kathy left Borden and had 2 children, a boy and a girl. During this time, she worked in the restaurant industry with her husband and father. In 2009, Kathy ran the Goodlife half marathon, and this past summer she ran the Barrie half marathon, something she plans to make a yearly tradition. With her children now 4.5 and 3, Kathy found herself missing the job she loved, and decided she was ready to get back into work with fitness. This past summer, she discovered the posting for Fitness Leaders here at Borden and now Kathy is working hard to keep her classes challenging and fun so the soldiers stay motivated and get the best workout she can give them. Although Kathy aspires to work back into the Fitness Instructor position, she says this is where I wanted to start, because I wanted to do something that I love doing. The sky s the limit. For now this is my passion so this is where I am happy. In her spare time, Kathy spends time with her family, runs, works out, reads, and shares her love of activity with her children. Kathy Dimakos est une monitrice et mère de 34 ans originaire de Barrie. Elle a commencé sa carrière en conditionnement physique en obtenant un diplôme du Collège George Brown en conditionnement physique et gestion du mode de vie. À Toronto, elle a enseigné des cours de cardio-vélo à l Université de Toronto et est ensuite devenue entraîneuse personnelle. Après avoir déménagé à Barrie, elle a entendue parler, par l entremise d un ami qui travaillait comme instructeur en conditionnement physique à Borden, d un poste semblable au sien et disponible sur la base. L occasion l a emballée et de 2003 à 2005, elle a travaillé comme instructrice en conditionnement physique à la BFC Borden. Son mari et elle ont alors décidé de fonder une famille; elle a quitté Borden et a eu deux enfants, un garçon et une fille. Durant cette période, elle a travaillé dans le secteur de la restauration avec son père et son mari. En 2009, Kathy a couru le demi-marathon Goodlife et cet été, elle a participé au demi-marathon de Barrie (ce qu elle compte refaire chaque année). Quand ses enfants ont atteint quatre ans et demi et trois ans, elle s est rendu compte que son travail qu elle aimait tant lui manquait et a décidé de retourner dans le domaine du conditionnement physique. Cet été, elle a remarqué une annonce pour des postes de moniteurs en conditionnement physique à Borden. Aujourd hui, Kathy travaille fort pour que ses cours soient stimulants et divertissants et que les soldats restent motivés tout en obtenant le meilleur entraînement qu elle peut leur offrir. Même si elle souhaite retrouver son poste d instructrice en conditionnement physique, elle affirme que c est là qu elle a voulu commencer parce qu elle voulait faire ce qu elle aimait. If your typical weekend involves sitting around watching TV out of boredom, get off the couch and head to the lanes. Bowling is a fun way to spend an evening. It was on this day that David Levenick, the Borden Information Systems Security Officer in cooperation with Military Police representatives MCpl Humber and Cpl Brosseau, took the opportunity to run a Cyber Security and Cyber Bullying workshop for the families that wished to attend. The Internet has greatly changed the face of parenting. Many children have access to the Internet while at home, at school, and through cell phones making them more vulnerable to a world they don t entirely understand. This is where the job of a parent becomes difficult. Here are some common Internet problems that parents should be aware of. Cyber bullying is becoming a common problem amongst children, warranting growing attention from the police due to a rise in suicides from children who are victims. We all know bullies are people who take away the power of another through nasty comments, harassment or even violence. Wikkipedia defines Cyber bullying as, actions that use information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is tented to harm another or others. It can include the use of internet service and mobile technologies such as web pages, discussion groups, instant messaging or texting. Cyber stalking according to Wikkipedia is, the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual, a group of individuals, or an organization. It may include the making of false accusations or statements of fact (as in defamation), monitoring, making threats, identity theft, damage to data or equipment, the solicitation of minors for sex, or gathering information that may be used to harass. It is often linked with offline stalking and is a chargeable offense. There are computer programs out there that can get a history of WiFi connections made by your phone or computer simply by connecting to your WiFi while you are unaware. By these connections they can determine your regular routes and hang outs. With the rise of cell phone use and texting, it is not surprising that sexting is becoming more common. This involves using text messaging for flirting to outright sexual conversation or sending inappropriate photos of oneself. Among young girls, sexting photos is becoming a problem. With the pressures of dating, more than one young girl has sent a photo of herself nude to a boy she was interested in. If the girl is under aged, this is considered child pornography. If the boy doesn t delete this photo, he is in possession of child porn. Worse, if he sends it on to his friends then he is distributing child porn, all of these being chargeable offenses. Make sure your children are educated. For the young girls, these photos, when put online, are available for anyone to repost somewhere, and in most cases, do not stop following them. During the presentation, Mr. Levenick revealed a startling statistic: within 48 hours more than 12,000 photos of a sexual nature were uploaded by children, within a week over 10,000 of those were found on porn sites. What would this do to a young girl s esteem? It is no wonder more and kids are committing suicide based on Internet activities. Parents need to parent online as well as in real life. Children will put everything on the Internet: where they go, who they are with, what they are doing. They don t stop and think about the consequences. The world is hard enough to grow up in without bringing the dangers right into your living room. Parents check your kid s online activities; look at their phones and Facebook accounts. Make sure you know who your child is talking to and what they are talking about. Talk to your child and make sure they know about the dangers of what they do online and the consequences they could be facing. Be aware of their moods, a child who is withdrawn, depressed or angry could be a child who is a victim. The better you know your child, the more you are a part of their lives and activities, the safer that child will be. Technology can be dangerous in uneducated hands, so give them the knowledge they need to protect themselves. For CFB Borden, this period is between April and August, during which there are over 300 moves in and 300 moves out. Frequent moves, often to remote parts of the country, are part of every day life for most Canadian Forces (CF) members and their families. This is for operational requirements such as career development, advancement and experience, as well as for training and operational deployments. Once the military members get their posting message, they have a very short time to secure accommodations at the new location. They normally get a 5 day house hunting trip to then plan their family s move. This can raise a lot of stress and urgency for the members and their family. Not only are they normally moving to an unfamiliar area, but they are also starting a new job with new people. They need to find a doctor and dentist for their spouse and children, change their car insurance and license plates, get Provincial Health Care and enroll the kids in school. The move also involves the establishment of new social connections, making new friends and getting to know the area. Military housing alleviates the pressure of these challenges. It is a military community situated directly on the base and within close driving distance to work. This living environment allows military families to meet people from all over Canada with whom they share a common experience through military life. They can then create strong bonds, support each other and share advice on different things such as places to shop or things to do in the area. There are a multitude of community support on the base such as the Military Family Resource Centre, the CANEX store, the Post Office, and a dentist. Those who live on the base can also benefit from a large variety of clubs and activities. Furthermore, Police and Fire services are provided by the Base. CFHA strives to make the process as seamless as possible: the move-in package is prepared, the keys are ready, the house is clean, and the families are fully briefed on all aspects of the License to Occupy and the key components of the Occupant s Handbook. We answer all their questions or we refer them to those on the Base who can. Always in the perspective of smoothing the way for CF members, CFHA prepares the Unit Personnel Data Transaction paperwork in order for the rent to be taken directly off the new occupant s military pay. Also, Hydro and gas accounts are transferred to their name as soon as they start occupying the RHU. As for maintenance problems, they are addressed on a 24/7 basis, either through the CFHA Housing Services Centre during work hours or through our Emergency After Hours call number. These services, offered by CFHA, allow military members to have peace of mind when they leave their families for duty, knowing they are well taken care of on the Base.

Au cours de cette journée, M. David Levenick, officier de la sécurité des systèmes d information de Borden, a offert, en compagnie du Cplc Humber et du Cpl Brosseau de la police militaire, un atelier sur la cybersécurité et la cyberintimidation aux familles désireuses d en savoir davantage sur ces questions. Le rôle des parents a considérablement changé depuis l avènement d Internet. Plusieurs enfants peuvent naviguer sur Internet à la maison, à l école et sur leurs cellulaires, ce qui leur donne accès à un monde qu ils ne comprennent pas tout à fait. C est ici que le rôle des parents se complexifie. Voici les problèmes les plus fréquents liés à Internet que les parents devraient connaître. Wikipédia définit la cyberintimidation comme, «l utilisation des technologies de communication et de l information par un individu ou un groupe pour adopter un comportement hostile, de manière délibérée et à répétition, dans le but de blesser une ou plusieurs personnes. Les cyberintimidateurs font notamment appel aux services Internet et aux technologies mobiles, comme les pages Web, les groupes de discussion, la messagerie instantanée et l envoi de messages textes». Depuis l avènement des pages Web et de Facebook, il est devenu très facile d afficher des remarques désobligeantes que n importe qui peut lire et commenter. Ces propos malveillants affichés en ligne blessent autant que s ils étaient dits directement à la personne concernée. De plus, il est bien plus facile d attaquer quelqu un par le biais d un médium électronique qu en regardant dans les yeux sa victime, en face à face. L intimidation, peu importe la forme qu elle prend, fait mal et peut avoir des conséquences tragiques, en particulier lorsque le recours à Internet permet de diffuser ces propos injurieux auprès d un très grand nombre de personnes. Le cyberharcèlement est un autre problème fréquent engendré par la technologie actuelle. Wikipédia définit le cyberharcèlement comme «l utilisation d Internet ou d autres moyens électroniques pour traquer ou harceler une personne, un groupe de personnes ou une organisation. Le cyberharcèlement couvre de nombreux délits, comme porter de fausses accusations ou faire de fausses déclarations (comme la diffamation), surveiller ou menacer une personne, commettre une usurpation d identité, endommager des données ou du matériel, inciter des mineurs à des activités sexuelles ou recueillir des renseignements dans le but de harceler». Les cyberharceleurs harcèlent également aussi directement leurs victimes, ce qui constitue une infraction pouvant mener à une inculpation. Il existe des programmes informatiques qui permettent d obtenir un historique des connexions Wi Fi faites à partir de votre téléphone ou de votre ordinateur en se branchant à votre Wi Fi sans que vous le réalisiez. Ces connexions permettent de déterminer vos itinéraires réguliers et les endroits que vous fréquentez. Le développement des cellulaires et des messages textes a donné naissance à un nouveau phénomène : les «sextos» ou le «sextage» qui consiste à utiliser les messageries textes pour flirter, se livrer à des conversations à caractère sexuel ou envoyer des photos inappropriées de soi même. L envoi de photos à caractère sexuel explicite est en train de devenir un problème chez les jeunes filles. Elles sont de plus en plus nombreuses à envoyer des photos d elles mêmes nues à des garçons avec lesquels elles désirent avoir une relation. Si ces jeunes filles sont mineures, le récipiendaire doit détruire ces photos, sous peine d être accusé de pornographie juvénile. Pire encore, s il envoie ces photos à ses amis, il pourra être accusé de distribution de pornographie juvénile. Ces deux infractions peuvent mener à des inculpations. D où l importance que vos enfants soient bien informés! Les jeunes filles doivent comprendre que n importe qui peut réafficher ailleurs les photos qu elles ont mises en ligne et que ces photos les suivront toute leur vie. Au cours de sa présentation, M. Levenick a mentionné une statistique étonnante : en 48 heures, ce sont plus de photographies à caractère sexuel qui sont mises en ligne par des enfants, et en une semaine, plus de de ces photos se sont retrouvées sur des sites pornographiques. Quelles conséquences cela peut-il avoir sur l estime de soi d une jeune fille? On ne s étonnera pas que de plus en plus d enfants se suicident en raison d activités liées à Internet. Les parents doivent surveiller les activités de leurs enfants sur Internet de la même façon qu ils le font dans la vie réelle. Les enfants mettent tout sur Internet : où ils vont, avec qui ils sont et ce qu ils font. Rien ne les arrête et ils ne réfléchissent pas aux conséquences. Il est déjà assez difficile de grandir dans le monde d aujourd hui; nul besoin d amener les dangers dans votre propre salon. Comme parent, vous devez surveiller les activités de vos enfants en ligne, vérifier leurs téléphones et leurs comptes Facebook. Assurez vous de savoir avec qui votre enfant parle et ce dont il parle. Discutez avec vos enfants afin de bien les informer des dangers liés à leurs activités en ligne et des conséquences qui pourraient en découler. Observez leur humeur : un enfant replié sur lui même, déprimé ou en colère peut être une victime. Mieux vous connaissez vos enfants, plus vous partagez leur vie et leurs activités, plus ils sont en sécurité. La technologie peut être dangereuse entre les mains de personnes non informées. La meilleure façon d aider vos enfants à se protéger est de bien les informer. Pour la BFC Borden, cette période, durant laquelle on compte plus de 300 emménagements et 300 déménagements, s étend d avril à août. Les déménagements fréquents, souvent dans des régions éloignées du pays, font partie de la vie de la plupart des membres des Forces canadiennes (FC) et de leur famille. Ces déménagements sont nécessaires pour des raisons opérationnelles, telles que l expérience, le perfectionnement, et l avancement professionnels, de même que pour la formation et les déploiements opérationnels. Lorsque les membres du personnel militaire reçoivent leur message d affectation, ils ont très peu de temps pour trouver un logement dans leur nouvelle région. Ils bénéficient généralement d un voyage de recherche de domicile de cinq jours pour planifier le déménagement de leur famille. Cela peut être une source importante de stress et d urgence pour les membres et leur famille. Non seulement ils déménagent dans une région inconnue, mais ils débutent aussi un nouvel emploi, avec de nouveaux collègues. De plus, ils doivent trouver un médecin et un dentiste pour leur famille, modifier l adresse de leur assurance automobile et de leur plaque d immatriculation, adhérer au Servicès de soins de santé Provincial et inscrire leurs enfants à l école. Le déménagement entraîne aussi l établissement de nouveaux liens sociaux et de nouvelles amitiés et la découverte d une nouvelle région. Le logement militaire atténue heureusement la pression suscitée par ces enjeux. En effet, ce type de logement fait partie d une communauté militaire située directement sur la base et près du travail. De plus, cet environnement permet aux familles militaires de rencontrer des gens de partout au Canada, avec qui ils ont une expérience commune. Ce milieu de vie leur donne l occasion de créer des liens solides, de se soutenir mutuellement et de partager divers conseils, comme les endroits où magasiner ou les activités à faire dans la région. En outre, la base propose une multitude de services de soutien, tels que le Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires, un magasin CANEX (Économats des Forces canadiennes), un bureau de poste et un dentiste. Ceux qui vivent sur la base bénéficient également d un vaste éventail de clubs et d activités. De plus, des services de police et d incendies sont assurés par la base. L ALFC s efforce de rendre le processus le plus harmonieux possible : une trousse d emménagement attend les nouveaux occupants, les clés sont prêtes, le logement est propre, et les familles sont informées de tous les aspects du permis d occupation et des éléments clés du Manuel de l occupant. De plus, nous répondons à leurs questions ou nous les dirigeons aux personnes de la base qui sont en mesure de le faire. Toujours dans le but de faciliter le processus pour les membres des FC, l ALFC prépare les documents liés au mouvement de données sur le personnel, de façon à ce que le loyer soit prélevé directement sur la paie du nouvel occupant. Qui plus est, les comptes d électricité et de gaz sont transférés à son nom dès l emménagement du militaire et de sa famille dans l ULR. Pour ce qui est des problèmes relatifs à l entretien, ils sont abordés sans attendre (service 24 heures par jour, 7 jours par semaine), soit par l entremise du centre de services de logement de l ALFC, durant les heures ouvrables, ou par l entremise de notre Service d urgence après les heures normales. Ces services, offerts par l ALFC, permettent aux militaires d avoir l esprit tranquille lorsqu ils quittent leur famille dans le cadre de leurs fonctions. Bertrand, CFB Borden CFSTG Tech Services TIS Base Technical Service Branch celebrated the 109th birthday of the Signals Branch on the 24th October. Here are a few points in the military communications history of Canada. Captain W. Bruce M. Carruthers proposed that a specialist signaling corps be created among Canadian army units. This proposal was accepted on the 24th October, 1903, authorizing the formation of the Canadian Signalling Corps. On 30 August, 1922 the first home of the Corps was established at Camp Borden in tar paper huts. Throughout June, July and August 1922 this third "Royal Canadian School of Signals" was held, after which a nucleus of instructional staff remained at Borden. This began the Signals association with Borden, which continued until the move to the Vimy Barracks, Kingston, in August, On 1 June, 1922, General Order 104 changed the title on the badge for the permanent force only from Canadian Corps of Signals to "Royal Canadian Corps of Signals". On 1 July, 1935, the Royal Canadian Air Force Signals 13 Branch began taking over Air Force communications. On 27 August, 1971 an Administrative Order was published to authorize the establishment of the Communications and Electronics Branch (C&E). The Signals motto is Velox Versutus Vigilans, which is Latin for Swift, Skilled, Alert, inherited from the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. It is commonly believed that the colors of the flag of the Communications and Electronics Branch represent "grey skies over blue waters"; however, the colors were inherited from the Officer's Mess Dress uniforms of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS), which were in turn inherited from the 21st Lancers, the first unit of Major Carruthers, founder of the RCCS. The purpose of this document is to outline the responsibilities of the CISM Sports Committee member and to solicit applications for these positions. The listed positions will be for a 4 year term and will begin in 2013 (various dates depending on CISM Championship schedule). The position of CISM Sports Committee member can be very rewarding but there are numerous responsibilities and duties that must be fulfilled. The Sports Committee member is responsible to the Canadian Forces Sports Manager (CFSM) and acts as the Canadian representative on the respective Sport Committee. The Sports Committee member is an officer (Capt and above), NCM (Sgt and above), a full-time employee of the Staff of the NPF, Canadian Forces.
