1 Unit: Les sports Level: Grade 5 and 6 (Core French) Topic of lesson: Introduction to different sports Length of lesson: 35 minutes Links to Addtl Langs Curriculum Recognize and understand familiar words/phrases supported by visuals Lesson Objectives: SWBAT: Identify and state their preference for different sports Prior Learning: Students can identify that each sport requires different equipment. Procedure Time Teacher s Role Student s Role Materials 5 min Introduction Bonjour! Bon matin! Repeat the date as a class. Calendar Ask the class: Quelle est la date aujourd hui? Quel jour est- ce aujourd hui? Quel temps fait- il? Review of Calendar 5 min Introduction to Sports Introduce sports using pictures and gestures. Use phrases such as: (The action could be kicking an invisible soccer ball or mimicking the action with your fingers) Have students work in pairs to orally identify the flashcard sports along board ledge. 5 min Practise the Phrases using Gestures Tell the class to get into partners and with their partner, they will take turns reading the phrase and doing the actions that correspond with the phrase. 10 min Example: A: B: kick an invisible ball Find someone who / Trouvez quelqu un qui Using the handout, model how to ask/answer question about sports. Est- ce que tu joues? Oui, je joue. Then have 2 students model for the class. Then have students circulate the classroom and ask different students to find someone who play certain sports using the phrase, Estce que tu joues? 5 min What did you learn? Ask the class to share some of their answers from the Trouvez quelqu un activity. Find out who plays each sport and who likes/dislikes each sport. Exit Slips: Ask the class to write 3 sentences answer questions about the weather and calendar. Students listen and repeat the names of sports while doing the actions. practise saying the phrases with a partner and doing the actions that correspond with each sport. Using the sports that the students have learned, tell the class to use symbols or draw stick figures to illustrate five different sports. Write each of the sports on strips of paper and place in a hat. Pull out each sport and read the phrase, Est- ce que tu aimes foot? and for the students who have illustrated playing soccer, they will circle their picture. Once a student has all of his or her items circled, the student says, J ai gagné! on the answers from the previous activity. listen to the sports used in full phrases. illustrate the sports. Handout: Sports Lotto Exten sion Adap tatio n Plan B For the next time: Evalu ation To check that the student has circled everything that has been called, ask the student to repeat all the sports using the following phrase, J aime foot. Play 7- Up using the different sports instead of the students names. For example, use the phrase: Est- ce que tu aimes foot? Oui/Non, je (n )aime pas jouer au foot. Focus on only 5 sports or sports that correspond with jouer and the next lesson, sports that correspond with faire. Students can interview one partner using the Trouvez quelqu un worksheet instead of walking around and asking different classmates. Ask students to split their paper into 6 sections and illustrate 6 different pictures to go along with 6 different sports phrases. Each picture should have a complete sentence as well as one object labeled. For example: One section may read, J aime foot with a picture of a soccer ball and the ball labeled la balle. Share with their peers which sports they like to do in the winter, summer, spring, and fall. Formative: Circulate to assess students participation, cooperation, use of French. Summative: Collect exit slips where each student will have written 3 sentences. Evaluate on the use of complete sentences that the students have learned in the lesson.
