18 Jean-Claude Cosset, Distinguished Speaker Finance Division What have we learned and what matters most in International Corporate Governance? In the last 30 years, corporate governance has become a complex and distinct topic in finance. Until the mid-1990s, most of the work on corporate governance has been in the context of U.S. firms. However, the influential work of La Porta. Lopez-de-Silanes, Sheifer, and Vishny (1998, 2002) has stimulated a voluminous body of research, both theoretical and empirical, on the effect of country characteristics, such as law, enforcement, and culture on cross-country differences in corporate governance. In this talk, Dr. Cosset shall survey the current state of this research on international corporate governance. In doing so, he shall review the literature on international comparisons that look at cross-country differences as well as more recent works that consider firm-level differences. Dr. Cosset shall also discuss the research on international cross-listings and the decision of cross-listed firms to bond themselves to the stricter governance rules of other countries (in particular the United States) as well as the ability of these firms to attract foreign investors. This will lead Dr. Cosset to review the literature on the convergence in corporate governance practices. Finally, Dr. Cosset shall review the burgeoning literature on the political economy of international corporate governance. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the key challenges and the directions for future research in the area of international corporate governance. Biography of the distinguished speaker Jean-Claude Cosset is a professor of international finance and Director of the Research Office at HEC Montréal. 21 Bernard Gendron, Distinguished Speaker Management Science Division Combinatorial Optimization Methods for Personnel Scheduling Applications Automated personnel scheduling approaches have greatly benefited from the advances in the field of combinatorial optimization over the past decades. Remarkable successes have been achieved, most notably in the transportation area, where mass transit and airline companies realized substantial economies by using specialized software tools based on combinatorial optimization methods. In this talk, I will survey combinatorial optimization methods for solving personnel scheduling problems. I will explain their strengths and weaknesses based on my own experience with two applications: 1) scheduling physicians in the emergency rooms of major hospitals in the Montreal area; 2) scheduling employees in Quebec s liquor stores, a highly unionized environment. I will argue that the latest advances in combinatorial optimization and computer science contribute to solve problems larger than ever with easy-to-implement software packages. Yet, research is still needed, as many personnel scheduling problems remain very difficult to solve. Biography of the distinguished speaker Bernard Gendron is a Professor at the Département d informatique et de recherche opérationelle, Université de Montréal, and Director, Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (CIRRELT). His research interests include integer and combinatorial optimization, largescale optimization and parallel computing, and location and network design problems applied to transportation, logistics, and telecommunications. 22 Steven Melnyk, Distinguished Speaker Production & Operations Management Division Identifying the Future of Supply Chain Management: Issues, Challenges, Changes and Research Opportunities The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. - Malcolm X Since the early 1980s, the supply chain has emerged as one of the dominant approaches for improving strategic and financial performance. It has caused a transformation in how we think the business unit from firm to supply chain. It is now supply chains that compete rather than simply firms. Yet, the supply chain is itself undergoing a significant transformation. In this presentation, drawn from numerous research projects and articles, we focus attention on the changes now taking place, with emphasis on the following issues and developments: The transformation of the supply chain from being strategically-decoupled, price driven to strategically coupled, value driven. Recognition that supply chains are not simply cost driven but outcome-driven. Awareness that critical to the success of supply chains are appropriate performance measurement and management system. The increasing importance of social systems/social network analysis/social media to the future of supply chain management. An awareness that our knowledge of the breadth of supply chains is limited. Recognition that supply chains are inherently complex and that this complex must be addressed in our research. Awareness that there is a need for more research into uncertainty (as compared with risk management). This presentation deals with these and other topics. The intent is simple to create awareness of the issues, challenges, and, more importantly, the research opportunities for doing interesting research. Biography of the distinguished speaker Steven A. Melnyk is Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management (Ph.D. The Ivey School, UWO) at Michigan State University. He has co-authored 14 books on operations and supply chain management. His research interests include supply chain management and design, metrics/system measurement, responsiveness supply chains, supply chain design, and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM). Dr. Steven A. Melnyk is an active researcher whose articles have appeared in numerous international and national journals. Dr. Melnyk sits on the editorial review board for Production and Inventory Management, the Journal of Supply Chain Management, the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management (where he is co-author for North America), and the International Journal of Production Research. Dr. Melnyk is known for his ability to bridge the gap between the academic and practitioner worlds. 22 A S A C

76 SPONSORS / PARTENAIRES In 1994, Athabasca University's (AU) Centre for Innovative Management (CIM) logged on with the world's first fully interactive online Executive MBA program. Today, the AU MBA is Canada's largest Executive MBA program, and has taken a place among the most respected Executive MBAs in the world. In 2009, CIM continued the tradition by launching Canada's first online Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) program. This program is designed to develop highly qualified management talent who will foster innovation and competitive advantage for business and government in Alberta, Canada and world-wide. In both programs, students representing a broad cross-section of industries, companies and geographic locations bring an exceptional diversity of experience, perspective and expertise to the rich online classroom interaction. Our 24-hour online format makes it feasible and practical to work on a high quality graduate management education while meeting commitments to work and family. Using electronic communication, students are able to share documents, presentations, designs, procedures and processes across geographic and organizational boundaries at any time, night or day. AU MBA students study in Canada, the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, the Middle East and other regions around the world. 76 A S A C
