4 Edito Edito Less is more & trop is te veel Jan Goossens, artistiek leider kvs Tegen alle verwachtingen in is de nieuwe subsidieronde binnen het Kunstendecreet niet uitgedraaid op een inkrimpscenario. Zeker in tijden waarin De Crisis als reden aangehaald wordt voor alle soorten beslissingen, van pijnlijke en noodzakelijke besparingen tot misdadige winstmaximalisaties, is dit opmerkelijk, bemoedigend. Was op het geld voor de Kunsten bespaard, dan zou daar waarschijnlijk geen haan naar gekraaid hebben, want: moet niet iedereen in tijden van crisis de broeksriem aanhalen? Toch mag niemand de illusie koesteren dat deze vraag de volgende jaren van de agenda verdwijnt. Er wachten ons complexe tijden, waarin pijnlijke vragen zullen moeten worden gesteld en beantwoord. In de voorbije subsidieronde werd KVS niet slecht bedeeld. Alle overheden, de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie en de Stad Brussel, hernieuwden hun engagementen tegenover dit meertalige en interculturele Brusselse stadstheater. Dat neemt echter niet weg dat die engagementen niet zullen volstaan om de werking van de voorbije jaren onveranderd verder te zetten. Op het vlak van de exploitatie, bijvoorbeeld, merken we de meerkost in onze nieuwe en grote infrastructuur. Bovendien houdt de verhoging van de middelen van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap nauwelijks gelijke tred met de indexsprongen van het voorbije jaar. Dus ook al lijkt er op het eerste gezicht meer geld voor de KVS te zijn, in werkelijkheid kunnen we deze standaard niet aanhouden en zullen we nog gerichter moeten inzetten op die dingen die voor ons het allerbelangrijkst zijn. De programmatie van KVS zal divers, dynamisch, kwaliteitsvol en laagdrempelig blijven, maar we omarmen het principe minder is meer. Al zal u dat niet per se opvallen bij het bekijken van dit seizoensoverzicht Daarnaast wil KVS een voorname rol blijven spelen in het maatschappelijke debat over de rol en het belang van een krachtige culturele sector in onze samenleving. En vooral: over het belang van substan-tiële overheidssteun op lange termijn voor die sector. Laat ons duidelijk zijn: wij zijn van mening dat ook cultuurwerkers burgers als alle anderen zijn en hun verantwoordelijkheid moeten opnemen op het moment dat iedereen in onze samenleving moet inbinden. Maar deze crisis mag niet als voorwendsel worden gebruikt om de broodnodige subsidies voor artiesten, in de brede zin van het woord, fundamenteel in vraag te stellen of te schrappen. Net nu zijn die artiesten immers meer dan ooit nodig. Of het nu is in Congo, in New Orleans na de doortocht van orkaan Katrina, of in Brussel op het moment dat heel Europa door een diep economisch dal gaat, artiesten zijn steeds essentiële actoren om tot Johan Van Den Berghe een nieuw begin en een wederopbouw te komen. Net nu moet er dus in cultuur geïnvesteerd worden. Ook de markt kan daar een rol in spelen. Maar die rol zal beperkt zijn. Weerbarstig, avontuurlijk en fragiel werk verdient zichzelf op allerlei maatschappelijke manieren terug, maar niet doordat er financiële winst mee te maken valt. De VS bieden op dat vlak een voorbeeld waar veel van te leren valt. Operahuizen en klassieke orkesten lijden zeer zwaar onder de crisis, voor fragiel podiumkunstwerk is er al helemaal geen plaats meer. Voor zo een landschap bedanken wij. Het Vlaamse subsidiebeleid heeft in termen van artistieke resultaten, werkgelegenheid en publieksparticipatie goede tot zeer goede resultaten geboekt. Reflectie en bijsturing zijn altijd zinvol, op voorwaarde dat ze uiteindelijk leiden tot een versterking en niet tot een afbouw van het beleid. We moeten koesteren wat er de voorbije 20 jaar is opgebouwd. In deze seizoensbrochure vindt u uitgebreide informatie over de artiesten en de projecten waarvan wij vinden dat ze het komende seizoen in Brussel echt belangrijk zijn. Artiesten die in deze stad een verschil kunnen maken, projecten die in tijden van crisis mee de weg kunnen wijzen naar vernieuwing en heruitvinding, of continuïteit en bestendiging. Uiteraard vertrekken vele van die projecten in het KVS-gezelschap: Ruud Gielens, Guy Dermul, Hildegard De Vuyst, Mieke Verdin, David Strosberg, Willy Thomas, Ivo Kuyl en Raven Ruëll. Daarnaast zullen ook vele anderen aanwezig zijn: Wim Vandekeybus, Mauro Pawlowski, Johan Heldenbergh, Olympique Dramatique, Josse De Pauw, Bruno Vanden Broecke, Bart Meuleman, Peeping Tom, Benjamin Verdonck, Faustin Linyekula, Fabrizio Cassol, David Van Reybrouck, Lemi Ponifasio en Koenraad Tinel, om er maar enkelen te noemen. Samen met al deze artiesten willen wij in de KVS de volgende jaren blijven werken aan de stad en de samenleving van morgen en blijven nadenken over de dimensies en de horizon van ons leven. We zullen ongetwijfeld inventief en flexibel moeten zijn en niet alle dromen zullen worden waargemaakt. Maar we geloven ook rotsvast in de nieuwe situaties en ongekende mogelijkheden die we het volgende seizoen en de volgende jaren met deze artiesten zullen verkennen. 04

5 édito édito Less is more & trop is te veel Jan Goossens, directeur artistique du kvs Contre toute attente, la nouvelle affectation des subventions dans le cadre du Décret des Arts n a pas débouché sur un scénario de baisse. C est étonnant. D autant plus en une période où La Crise sert d expédient pour toutes sortes de décisions, de réduction des dépenses, douloureuses et nécessaires, voire de maximalisations criminelles des profits. C est étonnant et encourageant. Avait-on épargné sur les deniers des Arts que personne, probablement, n aurait cillé, en effet : en ces temps de crise, tout le monde ne doit-il pas se serrer la ceinture? Pourtant, personne ne peut se bercer de l illusion que cette question ne sera plus à l ordre du jour les prochaines années. Une époque difficile nous attend, il va falloir poser des questions douloureuses et y répondre. Le KVS n est pas ressorti mal loti de l attribution des subventions. Toutes les autorités publiques, la Communauté flamande, la Commission communautaire flamande et la Ville de Bruxelles, ont renouvelé leurs engagements avec notre théâtre urbain bruxellois plurilingue et interculturel. Il n empêche pourtant que ces engagements ne suffiront pas pour poursuivre en l état les activités des années écoulées. Dans le domaine de l exploitation, par exemple, nous constations les frais supplémentaires dans notre nouvelle grande infrastructure. En outre, c est à peine si l augmentation des moyens de la part de la Communauté flamande s aligne sur l indexation de l année passée. Donc, si à première vue on dirait qu il y a plus d argent pour le KVS, en réalité, nous ne sommes pas à même de maintenir notre norme et nous serons contraints de cibler davantage nos investissements sur nos priorités. La programmation du KVS restera variée, dynamique, de qualité et accessible, mais nous nous approprierons le principe le moins devient un plus. Même si cela ne vous frappera pas forcément quand vous parcourrez l aperçu de cette saison. Parallèlement, le KVS tient à continuer à jouer un rôle dans le débat social sur la tâche et l importance d un secteur culturel fort dans notre société. Et surtout : sur la pertinence d un soutien substantiel à long terme de la part des autorités publiques de ce secteur. Soyons clairs : nous sommes convaincus que les acteurs culturels sont des citoyens comme les autres et qu ils doivent assumer leurs responsabilités au moment où chacun dans notre société est contraint à des restrictions. Mais on ne peut utiliser cette crise comme un prétexte pour remettre fondamentalement en cause ou éliminer les subventions vitales des artistes, au sens large du terme. C est précisément maintenant que ces artistes sont plus nécessaires que jamais. Que ce soit au Congo, à la Nouvelle Orléans, après le passage de l ouragan Katrina, ou à Bruxelles au moment où toute l Europe est plongée dans une profonde dépression économique, les artistes sont toujours des acteurs essentiels pour permettre un nouveau début et une reconstruction. C est donc justement maintenant qu il faut investir dans la culture. Le marché aussi a son rôle à jouer. Mais ce rôle sera limité. Des œuvres rebelles, audacieuses et fragiles se distinguent à beaucoup d égards sociaux, mais pas parce qu elles rapportent des gains financiers. Dans ce domaine, les Etats-Unis sont un bon exemple qui a beaucoup à nous apprendre. Même des opéras et des orchestres classiques souffrent durement de la crise, des œuvres fragiles pour la scène n ont déjà plus du tout leur place. Pour un tel paysage, nous disons merci. La politique flamande de subventions a obtenu des résultats allant de bons à très bons, en termes d accomplissements artistiques, d emplois et de participation du public. La réflexion et la correction ont toujours du sens, à condition qu elles conduisent finalement à étayer la politique appliquée et non à la démolir. Nous devons prendre grand soin de ce qui a été construit au cours de ces 20 dernières années. Dans le reste de cette brochure, vous trouverez des infos détaillées sur les artistes et les projets dont nous considérons qu ils ont une place importante à Bruxelles la saison prochaine. Des artistes qui peuvent faire toute la différence dans cette ville, des projets qui, en temps de crise, peuvent pointer en direction du renouvellement et de la réinvention ou de la continuité et de la consolidation. Nombre de ces projets naissent au sein de la compagnie du KVS : Ruud Gielens, Guy Dermul, Hildegard De Vuyst, Mieke Verdin, David Strosberg, Willy Thomas, Ivo Kuyl et Raven Ruëll. Parallèlement, beaucoup d autres artistes seront présents : Wim Vandekeybus, Mauro Pawlowski, Johan Heldenbergh, Olympique Dramatique, Josse De Pauw, Bruno Vanden Broecke, Bart Meuleman, Peeping Tom, Benjamin Verdonck, Faustin Linyekula, Fabrizio Cassol, David Van Reybrouck, Lemi Ponifasio et Koenraad Tinel, pour n en citer que quelques-uns. Avec tous ces artistes, nous voulons, au KVS, continuer à travailler pendant les années qui viennent sur la ville et la société de demain et continuer à réfléchir sur les dimensions et l horizon de notre vie. Il nous faudra sans aucun doute faire preuve d inventivité et de flexibilité, et tous nos rêves ne seront pas réalisés. Mais nous croyons dur comme fer aux nouvelles situations et aux possibilités inconnues que nous explorerons avec ces artistes au cours de la saison prochaine et des années à venir. 05 Johan Van Den Berghe

6 editorial Editorial Less is more & too much is too much Jan Goossens, artistic director kvs Against all expectations, the new round of subsidies under the Arts Act has not turned out to be an exercise in belt-tightening. This is striking and heartening at a time when The Crisis is brought up as the reason for all sorts of decisions, from painful and essential savings to criminal maximisation of profit. If money had been saved in the arts, probably no one would have turned a hair, after all, doesn t everyone have to tighten their belts in times of crisis? Yet no one should be under any illusion that this issue will be off the agenda for the next few years. A complex period awaits us, when painful questions will have to be asked and answered. The KVS did not do too badly in the recent subsidy period. All the governments, the Flemish Community, the Flemish Community Commission and the City of Brussels, renewed their commitments to this multilingual and intercultural Brussels civic theatre. However, the fact remains that these commitments will not suffice for us to be able to continue our previous activities unchanged. When it comes to running costs, for example, we have felt the extra expense of our new and expanded infrastructure. What is more, the increase in funds provided by the Flemish Community does not quite match the leaps taken by the RPI over the last year. So although it looks like more money for the KVS, in reality we cannot maintain this standard and will have to focus our efforts more precisely on those things that are most important to us. The KVS programme will remain varied, dynamic, high-quality and accessible, but we are embracing the principle of less is more, though you will not necessarily notice this when perusing this overview of the season. In addition, the KVS wants to continue to play a prominent part in the social debate on the role and importance of a strong cultural sector in our society. And above all on the importance of substantial long-term government support for this sector. Let us make it clear: we believe that cultural workers are citizens like any other and must assume their responsibility at a time when everyone in our society is being forced to exercise restraint. However, this crisis may not be used as a pretext to fundamentally question or remove the much-needed subsidies for artists in the broad sense of the word. After all, these artists are now needed more than ever. Whether currently in the Congo, in New Orleans following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, or in Brussels at a time at which the whole of Europe is experiencing a deep economic recession, artists are always essential figures in helping to bring about reconstruction and a new beginning. It is precisely now that investment in culture is needed. The market can also play a part in this, but that role will be limited. Stubborn, adventurous and fragile work pays for itself in all sorts of social ways, but not because it generates financial profit. The United States offers an example from which a great deal can be learnt. Even opera houses and classical orchestras are suffering greatly as a result of the crisis and for the fragile performing arts there is no longer any place at all. We refuse to entertain the possibility of such an artistic landscape. In terms of artistic results, employment and audience participation, the Flemish subsidy policy has achieved good to very good results. Reflection and adjustment are always worthwhile, provided they lead to a strengthening and not a dismantling of the policy. We must foster what has been built over the last 20 years. In the rest of this season s brochure, you will find detailed information about the artists and projects we believe are of great importance in the coming season in Brussels. Artists who can make a difference in this city, projects which in times of crisis can help point the way towards revival and reinvention or continuity and renewal. Of course, many of these projects involve the KVS company: Ruud Gielens, Guy Dermul, Hildegard De Vuyst, Mieke Verdin, David Strosberg, Willy Thomas, Ivo Kuyl and Raven Ruëll. Many others will also be making an appearance, including Wim Vandekeybus, Mauro Pawlowski, Johan Heldenbergh, Olympique Dramatique, Josse De Pauw, Bruno Vanden Broecke, Bart Meuleman, Peeping Tom, Benjamin Verdonck, Faustin Linyekula, Fabrizio Cassol, David Van Reybrouck, Lemi Ponifasio and Koenraad Tinel to name but a few. In the next few years, the KVS wants to continue working with all these artists on the city and society of tomorrow and continue reflecting on the dimensions and horizons of our lives. We will certainly have to be inventive and flexible and not all our dreams will become reality. However, we have a rock-solid belief in the new situations and unknown possibilities we will be exploring in the coming season and years with these artists. 06 Johan Van Den Berghe

Hij heeft net afscheid genomen van een bende dansers die verschillende creaties meegedraaid hebben, om met een volledig nieuwe ploeg aan de slag te gaan. Ze zijn zo jong, mijnheer. De muziek, vaak drijvende kracht in het werk van Vandekeybus, wordt ditmaal geleverd door Mauro Pawlowski (gitarist van o.m. deus) die mee op de scène de dansers aanvuurt. Ook al drijven stukken tekst van Peter Verhelst mee op de muziek, nieuwzwart is een dansvoorstelling pur sang, die een sfeer uitademt van begin én eind, van schepping én vernietiging, van genesis én apocalyps. nieuwzwart is huiveringwekkend, briljant, luchtig en wild. Il vient tout juste de dire adieu à une bande de danseurs qui ont participé à plusieurs de ses créations, pour se lancer maintenant avec une toute nouvelle équipe. Ils sont si jeunes, vous savez. Cette fois, c est Mauro Pawlowski (guitariste e.a. de deus) qui fournit la musique, souvent forme motrice dans l œuvre de Vandekeybus, et qui attise les danseurs en live sur scène. Même si des fragments de textes signés Peter Verhelst évolueront ici et là au gré de la musique, nieuwzwart est un authentique spectacle de danse, d où émane une atmosphère, de début et de fin, de création et de destruction, de genèse et d apocalypse. «nieuwzwart est brillant, léger et sauvage et donne le frisson.» (El País) ENG Wim Vandekeybus has begun his 23 rd season as a choreographer with his company Ultima Vez. He recently said farewell to a group of dancers with whom he had created several productions, to set to work with a new team. But how young they are! 8 theater/théâtre/theatre Nil nisi bene & Rari Nantes Bernard Van Eeghem & Catherine Graindorge 20:30 sep./sep./sep. 24, 25, 26 KVS_BOX theater/théâtre/theatre FR>NL NL Bernard Van Eeghem en Catherine Graindorge maakten in 2004 Nil nisi bene naar aanleiding van de vondst van een koffer met foto s en documenten op de rommelmarkt. De aangrijpende voorstelling reconstrueert het mogelijke leven van wie de koffer toebehoorde en is een ode aan elk onbekend leven dat zich achter elk willekeurig stadsraam afspeelt. In 2008 volgde de autobiografische voorstelling Rari Nantes, waarin beide spelers vertrekken van een markant feit in hun eigen levensverhaal. Bernard Van Eeghem, geboren in Frankrijk en geadopteerd in Brugge, gaat op zoek naar zijn natuurlijke moeder. Catherine Graindorge is de dochter van de in de jaren 70 gerenommeerde en geëngageerde advocaat Michel Graindorge, die ze als elfjarige een tijdje achter de tralies zag verdwijnen. De twee voorstellingen worden voor het eerst na elkaar gespeeld op één avond, als de keerzijde van eenzelfde medaille. Rari Nantes ( weinigen blijven drijven ) is schaamteloos autobiografisch, 99 procent onsentimenteel en, net als Nil nisi bene, een juweeltje. (De Standaard) In het frans, boventiteld in het Nederlands 08 FR Bernard Van Eeghem et Catherine Graindorge ont créé en 2004 Nil nisi bene après avoir découvert un coffre plein de photos et de documents au marché aux puces. Ce spectacle saisissant reconstruit la vie possible du propriétaire du coffre et est une ode à toute vie inconnue qui se déroule derrière n importe quelle fenêtre de la ville. En 2008, les deux acteurs ont monté Rari Nantes, un spectacle autobiographique dans lequel chacun est parti d un événement marquant de son existence. Bernard Van Eeghem, né sous X en France et adopté à Bruges, part à la recherche de sa mère naturelle. Catherine Graindorge est la fille de Michel Graindorge, avocat engagé dans les années 70, qu elle a vu disparaître provisoirement derrière les barreaux alors qu elle n avait que 11 ans. Ces deux spectacles sont joués pour la première fois l un après l autre, en une soirée, comme les deux faces d'une seule médaille. «Rari Nantes ( de rares naufragés flottent ) est autobiographique, de façon impudique, 99 pour cent non sentimental, tout comme Nil nisi bene, une perle.» (De Standaard) En français, surtitré en néerlandais ENG In 2004, Bernard Van Eeghem and Catherine Graindorge created Nil nisi bene following the discovery of a suitcase containing photographs and documents at a jumble sale. This moving performance recreates the possible life of the owner of the suitcase and is an ode to every unknown life which plays out behind every random city window. 9 muziek/musique/music Marollenopera/ Opéra des Marolles Walter Hus 15:00 okt./oct./oct. 03, 04 KVS_BOX Muziektheater/théâtre musical/music theatre NL+FR NL In het kader van BRXLBRAVO presenteert KVS een nieuwe etappe van de Marollenopera. Geen klatergoud, geen vast libretto, geen overdonderende scènes. Componist Walter Hus creëerde een kader waarbinnen hij zijn voorliefde voor muzikaal experiment perfect verzoent met een sociale inslag. De zangers zijn mensen die graag zingen, van diverse origine, achtergrond, leeftijd. Een Decap-orgel, hét volksinstrument bij uitstek uit de jaren 50, doet dienst als orkest. De voorstelling heeft intussen niets aan kracht en relevantie ingeboet. Sam Touzani en Ben Hamidou brengen met veel humor het aangrijpende verhaal van de Marokkaanse soldaten die tijdens WOII als kanonnenvlees door de geallieerden werden ingezet tegen het Duitse leger en vervolgens vergeten werden. Een stuk gedeelde geschiedenis met onze medeburgers van Noord- Afrikaanse origine, een voorstelling die iedereen gezien moet hebben. For their lies, lechery, blasphemy and jealousy they are punished in a hellish carnival where they have to pay for their lapses till the end of eternity. In Zus van haalt actrice Elsie De Brauw deze Ismene voor het voetlicht en plaatst op deze wijze kanttekeningen bij de geschiedschrijving. Hier staat een fenomenale actrice, die exact weet wat ze doet en waarom haar verhaal zo moet worden verteld. In this play, a small investor murders his family to spare them the disgrace of bankruptcy. The director Johan Simons intention is to counter this doom scenario with a message of hope, inspired by the biblical Acts of Charity. 20 Josse De Pauw (1952-?) KVS & Théâtre National KVS josse de pauw NL Januari is Josse-maand in KVS en Théâtre National! Het werk van deze veelzijdige podiumkunstenaar kwam de laatste jaren slechts occasioneel aan bod in Brussel. Na de wonderjaren bij Radeis en in het Kaaitheater, heeft De Pauw tijdelijk onderdak gevonden bij Victoria, Het Net of in Toneelhuis. Nu gaat hij radicaal zijn eigen weg, en KVS en Théâtre National hebben de handen in elkaar geslagen om hem daarbij te ondersteunen. Deze retrospectieve leek ons een goed begin. FR Janvier devient le mois de Josse au KVS et au Théâtre National! L œuvre de cet artiste aux multiples facettes n était présente qu occasionnellement à Bruxelles ces dernières années. Après les années de gloire chez Radeis et au Kaaitheater, De Pauw a trouvé refuge, temporairement, chez Victoria, Het Net ou chez Toneelhuis. Aujourd hui, il se fraye son propre chemin, radicalement. Et le KVS et le Théâtre National se sont unis pour le soutenir. Cette rétrospective nous semblait un bon début. EN January is Josse month in the KVS and Théâtre National! The work of this versatile performing artist has only occasionally been shown in Brussels in recent years. After the wonderful years with Radeis and at the Kaaitheater, De Pauw found temporary homes at Victoria, Het Net or Toneelhuis.
