Alors que la production mondiale de biens et de services a été multipliée par 7 depuis 1950, aujourd'hui, encore 56% de la population mondiale vivent dans la pauvreté, 20% n'ont pas accès à l'eau potable, 40% n'ont pas d'installation sanitaire et plus de 800 millions de personnes sont sous alimentées. Nos modèles actuels de développement montrent leur inaptitude face aux enjeux : près d'un quart des terres utilisables par l'homme se dégradent, les espèces s'éteignent en masse, les océans se vident, la disponibilité en eau douce s'amenuise et notre consommation toujours plus importante d'énergie conduit à des émissions de gaz à effet de serre qui, si nous ne modifions pas nos comportements, promettent un changement climatique dont nul ne connaît les conséquences. Nous vivons une étape décisive, où l alternative qu offre une politique de développement durable doit aider à provoquer les changements qui permettront de «répondre aux besoins du présent sans compromettre la capacité des générations futures de répondre aux leurs»*. Les images de La Terre vue du Ciel, indissociables des textes qui les accompagnent et les complètent, invitent chacun à réfléchir à l évolution de la planète et au devenir de ses habitants. Nous pouvons et devons tous agir au quotidien pour l avenir de nos enfants. Yann Arthus-Bertrand *extrait du rapport Brundtland, The world commission on environment and development : Our common future (Oxford University Press, 1987) By photographing The Earth from Above day after day, I intend to show that, now more than ever, levels and modes of consumption and exploitation of natural resources are not sustainable in the long term. Whereas world production of goods and services has multiplied by 7 since 1950, 56% of the world's population still live in poverty, 20% have no access to drinking water, 40% have no sanitary installation, and over 800 million people are underfed. Our present development trends prove to be inadequate in relation to the stakes at hand: roughly a quarter of the land available for human use is being degraded, whole species are becoming extinct, oceans are depleted, less and less fresh water is available, and our ever increasing demand for energy generates greenhouse gases which, if we do not change our ways, will cause a climate change with unforeseen consequences. At this critical stage, the alternative offered by a sustainable development policy should help in bringing about the necessary changes in order to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. * Inseparable from the accompanying text commentaries, The Earth from Above images invite each one of us to reflect upon the planet s evolution and the future of its inhabitants. On regarde l'image qui nous fait face, on l interprète et on la comprend. Elle nous touche. Mais qu en est-il si on est non-voyant? Pour la première fois, Regards Tactiles comble ce manque. Le spectaculaire, la surprise et l'émotion de certaines des photos les plus étonnantes au monde sont accessibles aux non-voyants et mal voyants. Ils peuvent dorénavant les partager avec des proches voyants, à leur côté. Voilà une image à regarder avec les yeux et les mains : une image à découvrir par le dialogue et l'échange d'impressions, un moment unique de rencontre et de partage. Regards Tactiles ouvre une fenêtre sur le monde pour les non-voyants et agit comme un révélateur pour les voyants. To touch and be touched A photo can make us feel. We see, understand and interpret the image in front of us. And we react with our hearts. But what if we are blind? Meet tactile photography. For the first time, people who are visually impaired can access the surprise, drama and emotion of some of the world's most stunning photography. Better still, they can discover it side by side with their sighted friends. And vice versa. Here is an image to see with both the hands and the eyes. An image to explore through discussion and exchanged reactions. A rare experience of sharing and belonging. It is at once a window into the world of vision for the blind and an eye-opening revelation for the sighted. 7

En 2000, pour la première fois, les grilles du jardin du Luxembourg qui encerclent le Sénat, accueillent une grande exposition photographique : «la Terre Vue Du Ciel», témoignage magnifique sur les enjeux du développement durable. La beauté des images et la pertinence du sujet deviennent un pôle d attraction, en particulier pour les enseignants et leurs élèves. Parmi eux des enfants aveugles questionnent Yann Arthus-Bertrand au sujet des photos exposées. Il ne sait que répondre. Comment expliquer une photo d'ombres de chameaux sur des dunes de sable à quelqu'un qui n'a jamais vu une ombre? Cette question innocente le fait réfléchir. Son ambition de photographe est de rendre son œuvre accessible à tous, or l'exclusion des non-voyants est vécue comme une forme d'échec. Pour y remédier, Yann Arthus-Bertrand est déterminé à trouver une solution. A challenge launched by blind children How did it all begin? In 2000, the wrought-iron fence around the French Senate's Luxemburg gardens in Paris played host to a breathtaking new photo exhibition, "Earth from Above". Never before had anyone seen such a poignant portrayal of the challenge of sustainable development. The beauty of each image and the timely relevance of the subject turned it into an unexpected success, particularly with teachers and their pupils. From among the crowd, some blind children asked Yann Arthus- Bertrand to explain his work. He didn't know what to say. How do you explain a photo of shadows cast by camels on a sand dune to someone who has never seen a shadow? Yet their innocent question got him thinking. A driving theme behind his photography at the time was that it should be accessible to everyone. Realizing that the blind were excluded from his work felt like a failure. He was determined to find a solution. 11

9 Alain Mikli - Jean-luc Mège Qui, pourquoi, comment? La version courte : Yann Arthus-Bertrand voulait partager son regard photographique avec les non-voyants : Alain Mikli a relevé le défi. Et la version un peu plus longue? Les deux hommes ne se connaissent pas et la rencontre a lieu grâce à leur ami commun Philippe Starck. Il y a 25 ans, Alain Mikli s'est imposé comme le premier vrai créateur de lunettes, pour voir autant que pour être vues. Alain Mikli connaît Yann Arthus-Bertrand de nom, comme tout le monde. L'exposition a réuni 50 millions de visiteurs dans le monde et le livre de l'exposition s'est vendu à plus de 2 millions d'exemplaires, dans 21 langues. «La Terre Vue Du Ciel» est une série de photos stupéfiantes, délivrant un message émouvant sur le développement durable. Lors de leur première rencontre, le photographe a fait part de sa frustration au créateur de lunettes de ne pas partager son art avec les non-voyants. Alain Mikli, connu pour son goût des nouveaux défis, relève celui-ci. Who, why, how? Here's the short version: Yann Arthus-Bertrand wanted to share his photographic vision with blind people: Alain Mikli made it happen. And the slightly longer version? The two men didn't know each other and it was only through a chance meeting via mutual designer friend Philippe Starck that they met. Alain Mikli's background went back 25 years, when he made a name for himself as the first to create true designer glasses. Not just for seeing, but to be seen. Alain Mikli knew Yann Arthus-Bertrand by reputation. Who didn't? His "Earth from Above" exhibition had been seen by 50 million people worldwide. Two million books had been sold in 21 languages. It was an astonishing collection of pictures with a moving message about sustainable development. When the photographer met the eyewear-designer, he mentioned his frustration at not being able to share his art with the blind. Alain Mikli, famous for finding technological solutions to the impossible, took on the challenge. 15

Un nouveau langage L'acétate de cellulose et son plus grand producteur, Mazzucchelli 1849, s'imposent aussitôt à l'esprit d'alain Mikli comme le matériau et le partenaire pour apporter la photo aux non-voyants. A base de coton, l'acétate de cellulose est la seule matière plastique d'origine végétale : souvent utilisée comme support des textes en braille, son toucher sensuel permet une lecture tactile aussi aisée que sur du papier. Alain Mikli a remis ce matériau au goût du jour en 1978, en l'utilisant pour ses lunettes de mode. L'acétate séduit tout de suite Yann Arthus-Bertrand, car ses caractéristiques de fabrication sont en accord avec le message de développement durable. Grâce à une étroite collaboration avec Mazzucchelli, Alain Mikli et ses équipes ont entamé le développement d'un nouveau langage. Ce langage permet aux non-voyants, mal voyants et voyants de partager le même art. Chaque image tactile débute en Italie, chez Mazzucchelli, par l'assemblage de sandwiches d'acétate avec une couche de gris foncé translucide collée sur une couche de blanc. L'acétate est ensuite traité grâce une technologie unique et complexe pour créer les photos tactiles. Un logiciel guide, avec précision, une fraise qui vient graver l'acétate sur différents niveaux de profondeur. Plus la gravure est profonde et plus le blanc apparaît sous le gris. Les plaques prennent ainsi forme laissant apparaître les ombres, creux et perspectives de l'image. Adopter la bichromie est très important pour accentuer les contrastes pour les mal voyants et pour montrer une image en noir et blanc aux voyants. Nombre de non-voyants et de spécialistes de ces questions nous ont apporté leurs conseils, leur concours, leurs avis. Qu'ils en soient remerciés. Yann Arthus-Bertrand avait enfin la solution qu il cherchait. A new language To make photos accessible to the blind, Alain Mikli immediately thought of cellulose acetate and its world-leading manufacturer, Mazzucchelli Made mostly from cotton, it is the only plant-based plastic in existence. For the blind it has a sensual touch that makes reading Braille as easy as on paper. Cellulose acetate is also the same plastic Alain Mikli has been using for his uniquely styled glasses frames since 1978, when he resurrected the virtually forgotten material. Naturally Yann Arthus-Bertrand was won over by its environment-friendly aspects. By working closely with experts at Mazzucchelli, Alain Mikli and his team began work on developing a new language. A language that would bring together the sighted and the visually impaired to share art. Each tactile image starts its life at Mazzucchelli in Italy, where it is simply a sandwich of cellulose acetate with a translucent dark grey layer glued onto a solid white layer. The acetate is treated with a unique and highly complex technology. Software guides the engraving machines that carve the acetate plates to varying depths. The deeper they carve, the more the white shows through the grey. Dark and light shades appear. The picture leaps to life with depth, perspective and shadow. It was important to have a two-tone image, to achieve maximum contrast. This helps visually impaired people to see the image, while providing a black and white image for sighted visitors to appreciate. Numerous blind people and specialists in blindness helped us throughout the development of each image. We sincerely thank them for their suggestions, experience and feedback. Indeed without them, nothing would have been possible. So at last, Yann Arthus-Bertrand had the answer he'd been looking for. 19

On me l a expliqué et j ai compris et pu apprécier les photos.» LE CORDOVADO SURPLOMBANT LA VILLE DE RIO DE JANEIRO Brésil. (O S ) Perchée sur un piton rocheux de 704 m appelé Cordovado ( bossu ), la statue du Christ rédempteur domine la baie de Guanabara et son célèbre Pain de sucre, ainsi que l ensemble de l agglomération de Rio de Janeiro. C est à une méprise des premiers navigateurs portugais qui jetèrent l ancre dans la baie, en janvier 1502, que la ville doit son nom de fleuve de janvier, ces derniers croyant pénétrer dans l embouchure d un cours d eau. Capitale du Brésil de 1763 à 1960, Rio de Janeiro est devenue une mégapole qui s étend sur 50 km et abrite plus de 10 millions d habitants. Le Christ rédempteur du Corcovado rappelle que le Brésil est le premier pays catholique de la planète, avec environ 141 millions de baptisés (86 % de la population). Dans le monde, le catholicisme (plus de 1 milliard de fidèles) est lui-même majoritaire au sein de la religion chrétienne laquelle, avec près de 2 milliards d adeptes (catholiques, protestants et orthodoxes), est la plus pratiquée. What blind people see I never realized that the Twin Towers of New York were so tall. You've helped me to understand this incredible world of ours better. You know, I'm in a better position than you to interpret this tactile photo. I've got ten eyes... You only have two! I'm sure that the sighted person who was with me went further in his understanding of the photo than he would have if he'd been alone. At last I've been able to share a common pleasure. I could see until the age of 18 so I understand distance which helped me a lot for the shots taken with a telephoto lens like the one of Rio bay. I lost my sight very young and I don't have any concept of shadows. When it was explained to me, I understood and could appreciate the photos. THE CORCOVADO OVERLOOKING THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO Brazil. (W S ) Perched on a rocky 2,326-foot-high (705 m) peak called Corcovado, or hunchback, the statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooks the Guanabara Bay and its famous Sugarloaf, as well as the city of Rio de Janeiro. The city owes its name-which means River of january - to a misunderstanding by the first Portuguese explorers who dropped anchor in the bay, in January 1502, and thought they had arrived at the mouth of a river. The capital of Brazil from 1763 to 1960, Rio de Janeiro has developed into a megalopolis with a population of more than 10 million and spreading out over 30 miles (50 km). Christ the Redeemer of Corcovado is a reminder that Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world, approximately 141 million (86 percent of the population). The more than 1 billion Catholics worldwide make up the largest denomination in Christianity, the world s most widely practiced religion, which has nearly 2 billion followers (Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox). 23

Partage d'impressions Le monde n'est pas noir et blanc. Le monde des non-voyants non plus. On peut naître aveugle ou le devenir. Selon le moment où l'on est devenu aveugle, notre mémoire visuelle est radicalement différente. Certains non-voyants connaissent les couleurs et les concepts de lumière, d'ombre et de perspectives. D'autres non. Les non-voyants et mal voyants ont des visions très différentes : certaines peuvent encore distinguer les formes, les couleurs, les lumières et les ombres ; beaucoup peuvent même lire ou voir des images à l'aide de loupes ou d autres matériels dédiés. Tout le monde peut perdre la vue à cause de la vieillesse, d'un accident ou d'une maladie, comme le diabète. Il est d ailleurs à craindre que le nombre de cécités dues au diabète augmente significativement à cause de l'alimentation riche et sucrée des pays occidentaux. Il y a en outre chez les non-voyants une grande diversité de niveau éducatif, de culture, de goûts, comme pour les voyants, qui expliquent la différence de perception de chacun d entre eux. L'exposition est avant tout une expérience de partage, comme lors de la rencontre d Alain Mikli avec les chanteurs maliens Amadou et Mariam qui ont perdu la vue très jeunes, empoisonnés par un puits d eau au Mali. Pour Mariam et Amadou, cette exposition fait tomber les barrières, «je me sens plus intégré, explique Amadou, car on m'explique l'image et je la touche en même temps, je peux visualiser l'objet qui est sous mes mains et tout devient plus concret. Je suis même au centre et absolument pas à l'écart de cette expo. On ne s'attendait pas à ressentir ces sensations lorsque nous avons abordé ces images. Cette exposition nous a beaucoup instruits et cela nous a peut-être même donné des idées pour de futures chansons.» Partager les avis, les appréhensions, les sentiments, à travers un nouveau langage. Ce nouveau langage commun amène les voyants à s interroger sur le décryptage d une image : ce que l on voit est-il vraiment la seule voie d interprétation de la réalité photographiée? Les non-voyants ont un rôle majeur pour révéler aux voyants d autres dimensions de la perception. Sharing insights The world is not black and white. Nor is the world of blindness. You can be born blind or become blind. Depending on when a person loses his sight ; he may or may not have memories of seeing. So some blind people understand notions like colour, light, shadow, perspective. Others do not. There are degrees of blindness. Some people who are officially declared blind have enough sight to distinguish shapes, colour, light and darkness. Many can read or see images with the help of powerful magnifiers. Anyone can lose his sight to old age, an accident or through illness, for example diabetes. Increasingly common in Western countries due to an over-rich and sugared diet, the number of cases of diabetes-linked blindness seems destined to increase. There are also different levels of education, culture or personal taste among the blind as well as among the sighted. These differences drive differences in individual perceptions. This exhibition is about sharing a moment between sighted and visually impaired, like the meeting of Alain Mikli and the Malian singers Amadou and Mariam, who lost sight very young, poisoned by a contaminated well. For Amadou and Mariam, this exhibition breaks down the barriers between sighted and visually-impaired. I feel more integrated, Amadou explains, because the image is explained at the same time as being able to touch it, I can visualize through my hands and everything becomes more concrete. I feel totally integrated in this exhibition. We didn t expect to have these sensations until we touched these images. This exhibition has taught us a lot and it may give us new ideas for songs in the future. It is about sharing points of view, perceptions, feelings and a new understanding. How does a blind person perceive art? is the wrong question. There are as many ways of seeing as there are people. And that includes sighted people. This new language pushes sighted people to ask themselves new questions. Like, is seeing the only possible way to transpose the reality which has been photographed? Clearly, blind people can bring new dimensions of perception to sighted people. 27

(E N ) Un monde qui change Si l'art est éternel, il est nécessaire de le rendre plus accessible. Cette exposition est avant tout destinée au plus grand nombre et récuse l'idée d'exclusion. Par sa dimension universelle, ce projet a aujourd hui une existence propre. Les gens dans le monde entier se sont ralliés à cette idée. Ils s'identifient et apprécient cette exposition. En tant que créateur de lunettes, Alain Mikli est passionné par le don de la vue. En tant qu artiste - designer, il cherche à rendre l'art accessible au plus grand nombre. Les photographies de Yann Arthus-Bertrand sont un support idéal pour provoquer des discussions entre les gens, qu'ils soient amis ou inconnus, voyants ou non-voyants. La vocation de cette exposition n'est pas spécifiquement éducative, même si on ne peut exclure cette dimension. Aujourd'hui, le monde est différent. On peut enfin tous avoir accès aux oeuvres d art. Ensemble. PARC EOLIEN OFFSHORE DE MIDDELGRUNDEN AU LARGE DE COPENHAGUE Danemark. (E N ) C est dans le détroit de l Øresund qui sépare le Danemark de la Suède, à 2 km à l est du port de Copenhague, par 3 à 5 m de fond, que s élève le plus grand parc éolien offshore à ce jour. Ses 20 aérogénérateurs, munis d un rotor de 76 m de diamètre juché à 64 m au-dessus de l eau, dessinent un arc de 3,4 km. Avec 40 MW de puissance, ce parc assure depuis fin 2000 une production annuelle de 89 millions de kwh (environ 3% de la consommation d électricité de Copenhague). En 2030, le Danemark entend satisfaire 50% de sa consommation d électricité au moyen de l énergie du vent (10% aujourd hui). Si les nouvelles énergies renouvelables ne constituent encore que 2% de l énergie primaire utilisée dans le monde, leurs avantages écologiques suscitent un intérêt certain. Grâce aux progrès techniques, qui ont considérablement réduit les nuisances sonores des aérogénérateurs (installés en outre à plus de 500 m des habitations), les premières réticences s estompent. Et avec 30% de croissance annuelle en moyenne sur les 4 dernières années, la filière éolienne s envole. A changed world If art is forever, there is certainly a future in making it more accessible. This exhibition is about including everyone. It refuses the concept of exclusion. Precisely because of this universal approach, the project has taken on a life of its own. People everywhere have rallied behind it. They identify with it. They feel good about it. Alain Mikli, as an eyewear designer, is professionally driven by his desire to share the gift of vision. As an artistic designer, he is also keen to make more works of art available to more people. The photography of Yann Arthus-Bertrand offers the perfect opportunity to feed discussion between all kinds of people, whether friends or perfect strangers, blind or not. His images remind us that we all have something to say about our place in this world. The aim is not to be educational, although inevitably it is. The world today is different. Because now we can all appreciate a work of art. Together. MIDDELGRUNDEN OFFSHORE WIND FARM near Copenhagen, Denmark (E N ) Since late 2000, the world s largest offshore wind farm to date has stood in the Øresund strait, which separates Denmark from Sweden. Its 20 turbines, each equipped with a rotor 250 feet (76 m) in diameter, standing 210 feet (64 m) above the water, form an arc with a length of 2.1 miles (3.4 km). With 40 mega-watts of power, the farm produces 89,000 MW annually (about 3 percent of the electricity consumption of Copenhagen). In 2030 Denmark plans to satisfy 50 percent of its electricity needs by means of wind energy (as opposed to 10 percent today). Although renewable forms of energy still only make up 2 percent of the primary energy used worldwide, the ecological advantages are attracting great interest. Thanks to technical progress, which has reduced the noise created by wind farms (installed about one-third of a mile, or 500 m, from residential areas), resistance is fading. And with a 30 percent average annual growth rate in the past four years, the wind farm seems to be here to stay. 31

(O62 21' - N9 57') Depuis la région des Lianos jusqu au delta Amacuro qui constitue l embouchure du fleuve Orènoque, plus de 1/3 de la superficie du Venezuela est formé de zones humides, habitat favori des ibis rouges (Eudocimus ruber). Ces échassiers nichent en colonies importantes dans les palétuviers des mangroves et ne se déplacent que de quelques kilomètres pour se nourrir. Le carotène issu des crevettes, crabes et autres crustacés qu ils consomment contribue à donner à l espèce sa pigmentation caractéristique. Les plumes d ibis rouges, naguère utilisées par les populations autochtones pour confectionner des manteaux et des parures artisanales de fleurs artificielles. Convoité tant pour ses plumes que pour sa chair, cet oiseau est aujourd hui menacé. Il resterait actuellement moins de représentants de l espèce dans l ensemble de son aire de répartition, en Amérique Centrale et en Amérique du Sud. Going places It's contagious. Each exhibition is only possible through funds raised. The project continues to evolve and will continue to travel the world. FLOCK OF SCARLET IBIS near Pedernales, Amacuro delta, Venezuela. (W62 21' - N9 57') From the Lanios region to the Amacuro delta at the mouth of the Orinco River, more than a third of the area of Venezuela is made up of humid zones, the habitat of choice of the scarlet ibis (Eudocimus rubber). These waders nest in large colonies in mangroves and move no farther than a few miles to seek food. Carotene derived from the shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans they eat helps create the characteristic pigmentation of the species. The scarlet ibis s feathers, at one time used by native populations to make coats and finery, are now a component in the manufacture of artificial flowers. This bird, sought after for its flesh as well as its feathers, is endangered today; fewer than 200,000 survive, in Central and South America. 35
