1 Les Amis de la Culture Française North Berkeley Station PO Box 9987 Berkeley, CA Notre site internet: Chèr(e) Collègue: Le 21 février, 2009 C est avec grand plaisir que nous annonçons le concours 2009 des Amis de la Culture Française, une association qui accueille tous ceux qui ont le goût de la langue française et qui encourage l étude de celle-ci par les étudiants des écoles secondaires de notre région. Comme l année passée, le concours est ouvert seulement aux étudiants de quatrième ou cinquième année et est limité à 10 étudiants par école. Inclus avec cette lettre vous trouverez les formulaires à remplir et tous les renseignements nécessaires. Veuillez les polycopier pour distribuer à vos étudiants et à vos collègues. 2 The questions are for all students. 1. Pourquoi avez-vous décidé d étudier le français? Pourquoi l étude d une langue étrangère est-elle si importante dans le monde d aujourd hui? 2. Quelle région de France ou d un autre pays francophone voudriez-vous visiter et pourquoi? Y a-t-il des sites historiques que vous voudriez voir et des spécialités que vous voudriez goûter? 3. Quel héros ou quelle héroïne universel(le), mort(e) ou vivant(e), vous a inspiré. Pourquoi et comment? 4. Avec qui allez-vous au cinéma? Comment choisissez-vous les films que vous regardez? Est-ce qu il y a un film récent qui vous a fortement impressionné et pourquoi? 5. Quels romans ou poésies avez-vous lus en classe de français? Décrivez cette oeuvre et pourquoi elle vous a plu. 6. Le réchauffement de la planète est un problème global. Comment est-ce que vous, les jeunes, pouvez changer et améliorer le monde? 7. Parlez-nous de votre famille ou de vos amis. Qu est-ce que vous aimez faire ensemble? 8. Quel rôle est-ce que la musique joue dans votre vie? Quelle sorte de musique préférez-vous et quels musiciens, chanteurs ou compositeurs français connaissezvous? 9. Si vous deviez choisir votre profession cette année, laquelle choisiriez-vous et pourquoi? Quel rôle est-ce que le français y jouerait? 10 L élection de Barack Obama à la Présidence des Etats-Unis, a soulevé un grand espoir pour l avenir. Quels changements pourraient améliorer notre pays et son image dans le monde? Please note: These questions were chosen to give you a wide range of topics to discuss. Some questions may ask you to give your own opinions or ideas. The judges will be looking at how you express yourself in French and they will not be judging your ideas. ROUND TWO QUESTIONS- LES ACTUALITES : You will be asked to research two current event topics from French news sources. One should be on international affairs and the other «au choix». Be prepared to speak about 2 minutes on the topics you have chosen.

3 HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH CONTEST SPONSORED BY LES AMIS DE LA CULTURE FRANCAISE Les Amis de la Culture Française welcome all those who enjoy the French language. The group brings together people of lively mind and encourages the exploration and discussion of French thought, literature, music and culture. We also promote the learning of the French language in local high schools. WHO: Students who are taking advanced French classes (French 4 & 5 only). Students who have attended a French or bilingual school, lived in a French speaking country or have French speaking parents are not eligible. Previous prize winners are also not eligible. WHEN: March 23, 2009 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at St. John s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Ave. Berkeley, CA. Fireside Room. Applications are due on or before March 15. Applications may be mailed or ed. WHAT: The contest is oral and the students will be judged on their spoken French. The students will be asked to give a short presentation in French about themselves and they will also be asked to respond to some of the questions provided on the next page. Depending on their background in French and the number of students, we will probably have two levels of competition, The top students from round 1 will go on to the final round to determine the winners on each level. L actualité française is the theme for round 2. Students will be given the topics ahead of time to research. PRIZES: Cash prizes will be awarded to the top students. The prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony on May 7, Pierre-François Mourier, the Consul of France and his wife, will speak to the students and award the prizes. We hope that the students will use their prize money to travel/study in a francophone country or use it to help defray their college expenses. JUDGES: The judges are members of Les Amis.
