1 GCSE Bitesize Controlled Assessment Model 1 (for C/C+ grade) Question 4 Subject: Topic: French Speaking In this document you will find practical help on how to improve your grade. Before you start working through the material, read the Exam Skills section carefully. Work through the task for either model 1 or 2 depending on the grade you are aiming for. Model 1 has suggestions for reaching a grade C and above. Model 2 has suggestions for reaching a grade A and above.

2 MODEL 1 (for C/C+ grade) Context: The world of work Task: You are applying to an agency to find a summer placement abroad and you are interviewed over the telephone. Answer the questions which you are asked on the following points, making use of the suggestions provided. You ll need to speak for 4-6 minutes. Your ambitions for the future Post-GCSE, post-a-level, university Choice of career 2

3 Question 4 Très bien. Alors, maintenant, dis-moi, qu est-ce que tu voudrais faire plus tard? Quelles études et quel métier aimerais-tu faire? Example answer «Plus tard, mon rêve, c est d être vétérinaire dans l association «Vétérinaires sans Frontières». Je pense que c est le travail idéal pour moi parce que les animaux me passionnent et aussi parce que j ai déjà travaillé avec un vétérinaire. En plus, j aime bien voyager et je parle trois langues. L année prochaine, j aimerais faire biologie, chimie, géographie et français pour les A levels. À mon avis, je vais pouvoir parce que je suis bonne dans ces matières. Après, je compte prendre une année sabbatique pour travailler pour une organisation humanitaire en Afrique ou en Asie. Ensuite, j ai l intention d aller dans une université pour faire des études vétérinaires.» Guidance Interesting content Try and provide extra detail to add interest but keep it relevant! Remember this formula: info/idea + point of view + detail (where/why/how/when) A range of structures You ll be assessed on how good you are at using a variety of structures, e.g. to speak about the future, you can use a future tense (je vais + infinitive), a conditional (J aimerais/je voudrais + infinitive) or a variety of phrases (e.g. Mon rêve, c est + infinitive, je compte + infinitive, j ai l intention de + infinitive). 3

4 Speaking tips Good pronunciation ups your grade. Remember: Don t sound the s at the end of plural words Don t pronounce the ent at the end of plural verbs. Make a liaison between words when appropriate Les animaux me passionn[ent]. Je vais faire des étude[s] vétérinaire[s]. (z) (z) Now, write a paragraph for Alex based on these notes (see below), giving interesting content and using a range of structures to speak about the future, making it worth a Grade C+. Read it out, then record yourself. Are you happy with your performance? Ambitions for the future Question 4 «Qu est-ce que tu voudrais faire plus tard? Quelles études et quel métier aimerais-tu faire?» Example answer and hints A plus tard, pâtissier dans grand restaurant Say your dream is to become a pâtissier, starting with mon rêve, c est... 4

5 B travail idéal pour moi Add details to this to make it more interesting, e.g. I love baking cakes (faire des gâteaux) and I ve done a placement in a restaurant. Use Je pense que to give an opinion. C année prochaine : rentrer dans école de cuisine en France ; réussir : bon en cuisine, bon en français! Use a phrase to express what you wish to do and a future tense Use À mon avis to say you think you will succeed in getting into the school D après : voyager, découvrir cuisine du monde. Use je compte to say what you intend on doing. Add an interesting detail, e.g. that spices (les épices) interest him a lot. 5

6 E ensuite, trouver emploi dans grand restaurant à Londres Think of a different phrase to say what you intend to do afterwards. Possible answer «Plus tard, mon rêve, c est d être pâtissier dans un grand restaurant. Je pense que c est le travail idéal pour moi parce que j adore faire des gâteaux et aussi parce que j ai déjà travaillé dans un restaurant. L année prochaine, j aimerais rentrer dans une école de cuisine en France. À mon avis, je vais réussir parce que je suis bon en cuisine, et bon en français. Après, je compte voyager et découvrir les cuisines du monde. Les épices m intéressent beaucoup. Ensuite, j ai l intention de trouver un emploi dans un grand restaurant à Londres.» 6
