3 Speakers Brian A. Catlos Prof. Catlos is Associate Professor of History at UC Santa Cruz. After extensive travels in the Middle East and Europe, he took his graduate studies, concentrating on Muslim- Christian-Jewish relations in particular, social and economic interaction. In 2000 he completed his doctoral thesis The Victors and the Vanquished: Christians and Muslims of the Ebro Valley, ss. XI XIII under the direction of Andrew M. Watson (Economics) at the Center for Medieval Studies (University of Toronto), and which received the Governor-General of Canada s Gold Medal. This punctuated a six-year stay in Barcelona, where he was a fellow at the Institute for Medieval Studies (Boston University) under the direction of Thomas F. Glick, at the Institut d Estudis Catalans, and the Institució Milà i Fontanals (CSIC, Barcelona), where he continues to collaborate. He took up his position at the University of California in 2002, just prior to the publication of his first monograph, The Victors and the Vanquished: Christians and Muslims of Catalonia and Aragon, , which received two prizes from the AHA. Subsequently he has continued to work on relations between Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities in Iberia and around the Christian and Islamic Mediterranean. Soon after arriving in Santa Cruz he began to co-direct the Mediterranean Studies Research Unit, with Sharon Kinoshita and Terry Burke, and is co-founder (with Sharon Kinoshita) of the Mediterranean Seminar, which co-ordinates a range of activities including a UHCRI Residential Research Group and an NEH Summer Institute.
