We are hopeful to see you at our Walk for Alzheimer s coming in four of our catchment communities. Mark your calendar June 7th 2015, Sudbury (960 B Notre Dame Avenue); North Bay (lakefront boardwalk); Little Current (Boardwalk); Espanola (Mall). Registration can be done online at or you can pick up a pledge form at your local society. Join us for a day of activities for the entire family and support an amazing cause! New programs are coming in our various sites. Living Well with Dementia sponsored by Alzheimer Society of Ontario will engage the person with early onset to take part in advocacy to build dementia friendly cities. Accompanied by a staff education programs will be delivered to businesses which will then be identified as dementia friendly environments. Persons with dementia and their caregivers /family can then support businesses that support those who are challenged to continue on navigating their needs for as long as possible. Friends of Dementia sponsored by Alzheimer Society of Canada is a volunteer base program where persons interested in assisting a person with dementia gain a short education program to better understand and communicate with those who are living with the disease. One commitment is required such as assisting a neighbor, volunteering for an Alzheimer Society near you, fundraising for programs, other. As we start a new fiscal year we are very thankful by the numerous sponsors, donors and bequests we have received in support of our mission. We also thank all our volunteers who work by our side in support of those who walk this journey. Nous espérons vous voir à La Marche pour l'alzheimer qui sera dans quatre de nos communautés desservies. Venez soutenir la cause. De nouveaux programmes sont à venir dans nos communautés. «Bien vivre avec les défis cognitifs» parrainée par la Société Alzheimer de l'ontario engage la personne avec les troubles cognitifs à début précoce de prendre part aux activités de promotion, et de construire les communautés amis et amies des aînés pour la démence. L équipe inclus un membre du personnel de la Société pour livrer aux entreprises un programme de sensibilisation pour ensuite identifiés ses entreprises comme des environnements sensibles aux besoins des personnes affligées. Les personnes atteintes de la démence et leurs aidants/famille pourront alors soutenir les entreprises, qui assure de reconnaître ceux qui font face au défi, ainsi que pour les aider à naviguer leurs besoins et jouir de leurs indépendance aussi longtemps que possible. Le programme «Amis de la santé cognitive» parrainée par la Société Alzheimer du Canada est un programme bénévole où les personnes intéressées à aider puissent acquérir une formation pour mieux comprendre et communiquer avec ceux qui vivent avec la maladie. Un engagement est nécessaire, comme aider un voisin, vous engager pour faire du bénévole pour une société Alzheimer près de chez vous, aider avec les collectes de fonds pour les programmes et d autre part. En ce début d une nouvelle année fiscale, nous sommes très reconnaissants envers les nombreux commanditaires, donateurs et legs que nous avons reçus à l'appui de notre mission. Nous remercions également tous nos bénévoles qui travaillent à nos côtés à l appui de ceux qui marchent ce voyage. Nous espérons vous voir parmi nous cette année. Au plaisir de vous rencontrer. 2

5 CELEBRATION COMMEMORATIF «Un papillon illumine notre entourage tel un rayon de soleil, et pour un bref moment son éclat et sa beauté font partie de notre monde; Et bien que nous souhaitions qu il eut pu rester, nous sommes bien malgré tout chanceux d avoir pu l observer» Auteur inconnu Dans le cadre de la célébration du 30ième anniversaire de la Société Alzheimer, l'activité de lâcher des papillons le 16 juin 2015 sera une importante opportunité pour souligner la multiplicité des rapports qui nous unissent. Pendant de nombreuses années, la Société s est développée, des passants par des débuts modestes, à ceux de l engagement puis de la conviction des soignants. Ceux-ci savaient que les personnes atteintes d Alzheimer ou de démence devraient bénéficier aussi longtemps que possible d un environnement familier, tout en leur permettant dans une certaine mesure de continuer à vivre dans la dignité et entourés d amour. Tout d'abord, quelle est la signification du papillon? Elle est principalement associée au symbole du changement et de la transformation. Le vol libre peut aussi représenter la «Mise en liberté de l'esprit» et le lâchage de papillons une expérience réflexive, mais malgré tout édifiante. Le papillon subit une transformation ou une métamorphose puissante. Passant à travers différents cycles de vie avec la légèreté de l'âme et de la bonne humeur. La signification du papillon est de l ordre de la découverte de la joie de vivre et de la légèreté de l'âme. Les personnes atteintes de démence subissent tellement de transformations, ce qui nous apprend à vivre pleinement le moment présent. La thématique de notre 30ième célébration: «Un vol en l'honneur de notre passé et en l'espoir de notre avenir» est un regard sur notre mission, sur notre raison d'être, et notre vision d un engagement continu pour se tenir cote à cote de ceux qui marche ce trajet et ceux qui ont perdu un être inoubliable qu il soit proche ou éloigné. De plus cette signifiance est d ordre du trajet que la Société poursuit à devenir la porte d entrée aux meilleurs soins pour la démence. Les papillons sont maintenant en vente à 30 $ l'unité et peuvent être achetés dans nos établissements à Sudbury, North Bay ou Little Current. Veuillez noter que lors de cet événement, la présence individuelle n est pas requise pour procéder au lâcher de papillons, en l honneur de l'être cher. Notez enfin qu une image de l'événement sera disponible et être prise sur notre site Web. Notre but est la vente de 250 papillons. Venez nous joindre en cet événement commémoratif célébrant notre 30ième anniversaire, qui sera suivi de notre AGA à 17 h puis d un BBQ et d un divertissement pour tous. Les places sont limitées pour l AGA aux 150 premières personnes qui participeront à l AGA. 5

6 Message to Caregivers Last week, I received a call from a distraught caregiver who spoke candidly about fear, guilt and stress in engaging family for help to navigate the horrendous health, legal and financial challenges that are imminent with dementia. Near the end of this hour long conversation, the caregiver said, "through experience, most of us will become skilled in this area of caregiving, but in the end, we are all just balancing and anything can make us tip over?" Caregivers, like many of you, have become skilled workers in the ways of shaping their "lives". They've found the tools and resources they need to carefully build each piece of the caregiving journey. Along the way, they've taken on new roles and responsibilities and the role is in constant motion all in an effort to keep the groundwork strong and their lives balanced and stable. Yet, it takes just one situation too many and the whole plan comes falling down. No matter what we do, life is beyond our control. In a sense, we're powerless. We all know this at some level, but the way we think, act and feel many times contradicts this basic truth. However, if we can accept that some things are out of our control, that its ok if things do not turn out the way we planned and learn to let go of the steering wheel we can become empowered. With this empowerment, we (or you as caregivers) begin the real work of taking care of YOU! We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to live the life that is waiting for us. Allowing those around us to help, accepting services that may assist both the caregiver and the person we care for is difficult. Sometimes a friendly nudge or team work can certainly assist in motivating one another. My message this spring is about nurturing those around us to let go and to put into place healthy habits such as physical activity. Lorraine LeBlanc (Executive Director, Alzheimer Society) Message for the Person with cognitive impairment: The journey you are embarking is one that must be told. Society must challenge you to better understand how we can be there for you. Your participation and engagement in all we do (programs and services such as First Link, Family support, Health Promotion, Day Program and In Home Respite) is of the utmost importance. Be assured that our intentions are to help you in any way we can, so we can put into place the programs needed that will assist you in remaining independent and in your home for the longest possible time. For this we need your participation. To find out more how you can assist Society attend our monthly advocacy group every first Tuesday of the month. Dementia, Intimacy and Sexuality: (Alzheimer Society Canada position 10 th, 2015) People with dementia have the right to grow and participate in life as fully as possible. Intimacy and sexual expression are part of being human; it s no different for people with dementia. The prevalence of dementia is increasing; in less than 20 years, 1.4 million Canadians will have the disease. Many of them will live in long-term care homes as the disease progresses. In fact, 57% of seniors living in a residential care home have a diagnosis of Alzheimer s disease and/or other dementia (1), and 70% of all individuals diagnosed with dementia will die in a nursing home (2). It s challenging for day-program and long-term care staff to support the intimacy needs of people with dementia, while balancing the right to privacy and respect with the responsibility of keeping them safe. People with dementia may be less able to voice their need for intimacy as the disease progresses. It s important to see their behaviour as a form of expression rather than a problem to be managed. Communication is vital. Talking about intimacy and sexuality can be challenging for everyone. Understanding our own values and attitudes and knowing more about dementia can lead to more personalized solutions. 7 NORTH BAY UPDATE It has been an exciting start to 2015 in North Bay. Office renovations, new staff and new programs have been keeping us all very busy! In January, we welcomed Ashlin Rich to our team as the Public Health and Awareness Intern. Ashlin will be leading new education initiatives in the community and will also be responsible for volunteer engagement and recruitment. We would also like to welcome Diane Windsor, RN who has joined our team as the First Link Coordinator. Diane brings many years of experience to this role; she will play a key part in engaging healthcare providers and assisting clients with access to our services. A big thank you to Tayler Knight who has been with us for the past few months on a student placement from Canadore College. Tayler has been a huge asset to our team, assisting us with our dinner fundraiser, starting up our Men s Coffee Group as well as the Dementia Art Therapy Program and preparing materials for clients. Thank you Tayler and we wish you the best of luck as you head off to begin your Bachelor of Social Work this fall! In February, we held our first annual Dinner with the North Bay Battalion fundraiser at Cecil s Eatery. The event raised approx. $5, for programs and services in the North Bay area. A big thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, clients and other community supporters that helped make this event a huge success. We are happy to announce the start of several new programs: Music and Memory ipod Project: with generous support from Georgian College Pre-Health students, the North Bay Legion Branch 23 and the North Bay and Area Community Foundation, we are now offering music therapy to clients through personalized ipod playlists. Contact Linda for more information. Pet Therapy: On the 3 rd Thursday of every month, participants in our weekly in office Dementia Art Therapy program can visit with Deva the Therapy Dog. First Link: The first step to living well with dementia. More information and learning series schedules coming soon. Up next we are looking forward to the annual Spring Fashion Show fundraiser hosted by the Empire ( 2015), a public screening of the film Alive Inside to officially launch our new music therapy program (May 2015) and of course the Walk for Alzheimer s which is taking place this year on Sunday, June 7 th at the North Bay Waterfront. 8 MISE À JOUR DE NORTH BAY Le début de l année 2015 a été palpitant à North Bay! Nous avons été tenus forts occupés par la rénovation de nos bureaux, le recrutement de nouveaux employés et la mise en place de nouveaux programmes. En janvier, nous avons accueilli Ashlin Rich au sein de notre équipe. Elle se joint à nous en qualité d interne en santé publique et en sensibilisation. Elle mènera de nouvelles initiatives d éducation dans la communauté et aura aussi pour responsabilité de mobiliser et de recruter les bénévoles. Nous aimerions aussi souhaiter une cordiale bienvenue à Diane Windsor, IA, qui se joint à l équipe de North Bay en qualité de coordonnatrice du programme Premier lien. Elle a acquis une longue expérience qu elle mettra au service de notre organisme. Elle jouera un rôle déterminant en mobilisant les fournisseurs de soins de santé et en aidant les patients à avoir accès à nos services. Un grand merci à Tayler Knight qui au cours des derniers mois a fait un stage dans le cadre de ses études au collège Canadore. Tayler a été un atout précieux pour notre équipe, nous aidant à organiser notre souper-bénéfice, à lancer le Café-rencontre pour hommes, à offrir le Programme d art-thérapie aux personnes atteintes de démence et à préparer le matériel pour les clients. Merci Tayler! Nous te souhaitons beaucoup de succès dans tes études de baccalauréat en travail social cet automne! En février, nous avons tenu notre premier souper-bénéfice avec l équipe North Bay Battalion au restaurant Cecil s Eatery. L événement a permis de recueillir $ pour nos programmes et services de soutien à North Bay. Nous aimerions remercier tous nos bénévoles, commanditaires et autres sympathisants de la communauté qui ont fait de cet événement un succès. Nous avons le plaisir d annoncer le lancement de plusieurs nouveaux programmes : Projet musique et mémoire ipod : Grâce au généreux soutien des étudiants du programme préalable aux études en santé du collège Georgian, de la filiale 23 de la Légion royale canadienne de North Bay et de la Fondation communautaire de North Bay et des environs, nous offrons maintenant un Programme de musicothérapie aux clients en leur permettant d écouter des listes de lecture personnalisées sur un ipod. Aller à pour en apprendre davantage sur ce programme ou communiquer avec Maria à notre bureau. Café-rencontre pour hommes : Groupe d entraide destiné aux hommes soignants. Le groupe se réunit le dernier jeudi du mois. Communiquer avec Linda pour obtenir plus de renseignements. Zoothérapie : Le troisième jeudi du mois, les participants à notre Programme d art-thérapie pour les personnes atteintes de démence offert à nos bureaux peuvent passer du temps avec Deva, la chienne de thérapie. Premier lien : Le premier pas à franchir pour mieux vivre avec la démence. D autres renseignements et l horaire des séances d éducation publique seront bientôt disponibles. Nous avons hâte à nos prochaines activités, soit le Défilé de mode printanier organisé par The Empire (avril), la projection publique du film Alive Inside pour reconnaître le lancement officiel de notre Programme de musicothérapie (mai) et, bien sûr, notre Marche pour l Alzheimer qui, cette année, aura lieu le dimanche 7 juin au secteur riverain de North Bay. Now that the sun is shining we hope to be able to meet many of you in person and hope that you will join us for our many upcoming events and programs. MINDS IN MOTION: Starts June 2015 An 8 week physical and cognitive activity program for both the person with dementia and their caregivers will be starting in June. To register or to receive additional information please call Alison (705) ext. 402 We would like to thank Paper Works in Espanola for their generous donation of supplies for the therapeutic art program. This program is held on the last Monday of every month from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Espanola Senior drop in center. Further donations are greatly appreciated. The Ipod Music Heals therapy program offered by registration is currently seeking donations of gently used or new Ipods to meet the wait lists in our communities. Research demonstrates that music therapy is a gateway to communication for persons with dementia. ( Volunteers are needed to assist us in meeting the growing needs and support in Espanola and Manitoulin regions for support groups, programs and events. Little Current is presently seeking a volunteer receptionist for office assistance. 11 DAY PROGRAM NEWS Spring has finally sprung! It is truly a time of rejuvenation and celebration! Here at the Day Program we have been very busy with planting our seedlings, sanding our birdhouses and spring cleaning! We are looking forward to a very busy spring with all of the events happening in June. Our Day Program clients will have a part in the preparations for all of the upcoming events in June. We will have butterfly themed activities to add to our ever-growing list of new and inspirational programs. The intergenerational program will be wrapping up with a big celebration. We are deciding which art to present at our annual art show. (Date and time to be decided) and we will be celebrating motherhood, fatherhood and all the stages in between. One of our activities for this spring will include the creation of sensory bottles that will be distributed to the ER department of the hospital to be utilized by those with dementia who must visit the hospital. These sensory bottles will be used to comfort and stimulate clients during their stay in the ER. It is one way that our clients can give back to our community. The drumming sessions with Jeff Stewart are back by popular demand! We will also be looking to enhance our Living through the Arts program with new projects and activities based on the various arts. We hope to see everyone out to our Annual General Meeting which we will be highlighting all of our Day Program activities as well as the Services that our agency has to offer. 12 PROGRAMME DU JOUR Le printemps est enfin arrivé! C'est vraiment un moment de rajeunissement et de célébration! Ici au programme de jour nous ont été très occupé avec la plantation de semis, notre de ponçage notre nichoirs et nettoyage de printemps! Nous attendons avec impatience un printemps très occupé avec tous les événements qui se produisent en juin. Notre programme du jour, les clients auront un rôle dans la préparation de tous les événements à venir en juin. Nous aurons des activités sur le thème de papillon à ajouter à notre liste toujours croissante de nouvelles et programmes inspirants. Le programme intergénérationnel sera Wrapping up avec une grande fête. Il s'agit de décider quelque art pour présenter à notre exposition d'art annuelle. (Date et heure à être décidé) et nous célébrerons la maternité, de la paternité et de toutes les étapes intermédiaires. Une de nos activités pour ce printemps comprendra la création de bouteilles sensorielle qui sera distribué à l'er Ministère de l'hôpital pour être utilisée par des personnes souffrant de la démence qui doivent se rendre à l'hôpital. Ces bouteilles sensorielle sera utilisé pour confort et stimuler les clients pendant leur séjour dans l'er. Il s'agit d'une façon que nos clients peuvent redonner à notre communauté. Les tambours sessions, avec Jeff Stewart, sont de retour à la demande générale! Nous chercherons aussi à améliorer notre "vivre à travers le programme des Arts avec de nouveaux projets et activités fondées sur les différents "arts". Services Include: diabetic feet, fungal nails, corns, callous, thick nails & foot massage To book an appointment for your loved one please contact: Karen at (705) Care Kits Provides relaxation and sensory stimulation in the form of activities that will eliminate boredom and ultimately responsive behaviours for the person with dementia while away from home. Kits contain activities that can be done independently or with the assistance of a care partner. Offered to Adults 65 years or older who are living in their own home interested in learning how to implement a daily physical activity program for enhanced wellbeing. THE PROGRAM IS: (adapted to the needs of caregivers and person with memory loss) Group exercises conducted twice a week for 12 weeks Exercises that are easy to do in the home Provides a boost to your self-confidence Offers educational information on a healthy life style, safe behaviour and ways to adapt the home to prevent falls. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM: Improve balance Enhance a feeling of effectiveness related to falls Help maintain bone density in sites that are most vulnerable to fracture (wrists, hips, etc.) Encourage the practice of regular physical activity. Any donation over $500 gets put on our beautiful donor board located in the reception area of our office. MEMORIAL DONATION Is a significant way to pay tribute to a relative, friend or colleague who has passed away. You are honouring a special life by helping us improve the lives of others facing the challenges of this disease. Memorial donations of $1,000 or more are placed on our memorial quilt located in the reception of our office. MONTHLY GIVING PROGRAM Becoming a monthly donor means joining our Partners in Giving Program. Your dependable monthly gift allows us to plan ahead; it is an easy and convenient way to support the work we do. A tax receipt will be mailed to you at the end of the year for your cumulative donations. LASTING LEGACY Can be in the form of a bequest, life insurance, charity gift annuities, publicly traded securities, RRSP/RRIF Funds, endowments, charitable remainder trusts. 20 IN LOVING MEMORY OF KAYLA BREADNER This year we lost an amazing young woman far too soon. Kayla was a PSW in our Day Program and a dear friend to all of us at the Society. She had a passion for life, for working with our clients and for her family. Her smile, sense of humour and amazing personality would light up the Day Program the moment she walked in.
