2 LE PARTICIPE PRÉSENT Present participle It always ends in ant and is the equivalent of the ing form in English HOW TO BUILD IT? Manger de trop est mauvais pour votre santé. = when the verb is the subject of the sentence, we use in French the infinitive of the verb, not the present participle 4

5 Avoir soif dans le désert est un problème commun. Being thirsty in the desert is a common problem. Being thirsty in the desert is the subject of the sentence, so we use the infinitive form in French Ayant très soif, elle a bu toute l eau. Being very thirsty, she drank all the water. Being very thirsty, is not the subject of the sentence here. It just describes her condition. Here she is the subject of the sentence. So we use the present participle in French Running is a good exercise. Courir est un bon exercice. Savoir conduire est important. Knowing how to drive is important. Ne pas comprendre son patron est un problème. Not understanding your boss is a problem. Elle est tombée en courant. She fell while running. Sachant que tu n étais pas là, je ne suis pas venu. Knowing you were not there, I did not come. Ne comprenant pas mon patron, j ai du l arrêter. Not understanding my boss, I had to stop him. Other possible use of the present participle: Je l ai vu lisant une lettre. I saw him reading a letter. J ai vu George lisant une lettre. I saw George reading a letter. 5
