2 Scene 1 Edinburgh Airport. and his father are by the Car Rental Desk. The girl is sorry. Car Rental Girl I m sorry, Mr Pereira, but we don t have a reservation in your name. tries to understand. He repeats the words. «Sorry», ça veut dire «désolé». Mr Pereira, c est mon père, et «réservation», ça ressemble au français. «Name», c est «nom» Ah, ça y est, j ai compris, ils n ont pas de réservation à ton nom, c est ça, papa? 4 Scene 2 Hotel Entrance and Library. The hotel manager is behind the desk when and his father enter. Hotel Manager Good evening, Sir. I m the hotel manager. Do you have a reservation? Good evening. Yes, two rooms. Hotel Manager And your name is? Pereira. I m and this is my son,. Hotel Manager That s right. Two rooms for six nights. Rooms thirty-three and twenty-nine. The haunted ones. No, I m not frightened. But I would not like to see a ghost. Hotel Manager (to ) If you like ghosts, this is the perfect place. Later this evening, Mr McKenzie, our gardener, will tell the story of the ghost nanny. (to ) Ce soir, le jardinier de l hôtel racontera l histoire (the story) de la gouvernante fantôme (the ghost nanny). I like stories about ghosts! I don t like real ghosts. 5

Mr McKenzie Hello everybody. My name is Robert McKenzie, and I m going to tell you the story of the ghost nanny that haunts this castle. It was a winter s night. Shona McAlistair, the castle nanny, had taken the children skating on the frozen lake. Miles was twelve years old, Flora eight. What happened on the lake, nobody will ever know. But Shona McAlistair came back alone. She walked up the stairs to the fourth floor of the tower. And jumped to her death. Since the year sixteen forty-nine, Shona McAlistair haunts this castle, calling for Flora and Miles to return. Mr McKenzie s en va, puis les clients, puis, puis. Ils sortent tous en silence. 6
