Energy choices have become essential and the energy mix notion is of concern to high officials and regulatory authorities. The electricity sector is undeniably the backbone of economic development in all countries. In Africa, a 7% average annual growth is planned for the whole continent in the next two decades. It might be considered as an optimistic rate, yet it is still a long way from the current growth rates in the electricity sector. A recent report of the African Development Bank indicates that Africa is the part of the world with the lowest electrification rate. Estimates show that only 42% of the population has access to electricity, compared to 75% in developed countries. Sub-Saharan Africa shows even lower rates: 30% and only 14% in rural areas. Besides, even when modern energy is available, it is expensive and unreliable. If the current trends go on, less than half of African countries would reach universal access to electricity by 2050 These figures speak volumes about the stakes and the challenges that the sector needs to take up in the years to come. Consequently, experts and analysts agree that the current situation of the electricity sector in the region is challenging as Africa seems to be sinking into crisis and as the situation is likely to get worse with the increasing number of challenges, the global financial crisis, the price of oil, and the social and political tensions on the continent. Moreover, planning remains the poor relation of energy governance, and the lack of foresight does not encourage private investors to become involved in the region, hence the slow progress of regional interconnection. Consequently, there is a need to improve technical and financial governance of national electricity companies, especially for backers. This comes on top of problems regarding the production under-capacity, the inadequacy of the legal and regulatory framework, and the lack of training and necessary skills. The authorities became aware of the situation and some Countries such as the Ivory Coast have set about deep changes and could serve as examples to the rest of the continent. The efforts of public authorities to reform the sector and the huge projects launched in order to double the production capacity show this will to progress. For all these reasons, the 7th edition of the Africa Power Forum will be held next October in Abidjan, the symbol of African economic dynamism. On the agenda: two days of various and rich discussions on highly strategic issues for the development of the sector. The whole African electricity community is invited to this key event in order to share experiences, to immerse in the best practices and to discuss the latest innovations.
