1 French Lesson: J aime/je n aime pas and la preposition à Grade: 6 Prescribed Learning Outcomes: Acquiring Information: express acquiring information in oral and visual forms Communication: express preferences and interests Topic: Using prépositions Lesson Length: 45 minutes Learning Objectives: Students will: learn to use la préposition à learn and practice vocabulary for expressing likes and dislikes review grammar rules regarding les articles definis (le, la, les, l ) demonstrate oral, written, and representational understanding of concepts Materials (see Resources): Matching game cards (1 per student) Dessert making game envelopes and cards (4 envelopes) La Cuisine Française worksheet (1 per student) Lesson Vocabulary: Food Vocabulary (previously covered): Expressing like/dislike: gâte amandes J aime tarte orange Je n aime pas crème glacée éclair biscuits pomme orange chocolat avoine mousse petit gâte fraises croissant framboises Lesson Outline: Introduction: Matching Game (5 minutes) Introduce vocabulary to express like and dislike. Write J aime and Je n aime pas on the board and have students practice saying each phrase. Hand out a matching game card to each student (See Resources). Instruct students to try to match the French phrase to the English phrase of the same meaning (students can draw lines or write numbers to show connections). Go over the answers as a class and practice saying J aime and Je n aime pas once again.

2 Activity 1: Vocabulary Review and Grammar Introduction (10 minutes) Ask students to think of some of their favourite desserts (for example: gate, crème glacée, etc.). (Food vocabulary was reviewed in a previous unit, but students may need help translating into French). Write suggestions on the board. Remind students of definite articles (le/la/l /les). As a class, match the correct definite article with each noun. Next, have students come up with a flavour or type for each dessert (for example: vanille, fraise, etc.). Translate and add to the board next to the dessert that it describes (allow space for adding the preposition). As a class, match the correct definite article with each flavour/type. Introduce the rules of how you would add in la préposition à to complete the dessert. When definite articles follow a preposition, the preposition and article fuse together. à + le = à + l = à + la = à + les = x Write the complete dessert with the preposition (examples below). Practice expressing like or dislike for each item out loud with students (example: Je n aime pas la tarte x pommes). le gâte vanille Le gâte vanille la tarte à les pommes La tarte x pommes la crème glacée à le chocolat La crème glacee chocolat Activity 2: Dessert Making (15 mins) Split students into four groups. Hand out Dessert Making envelopes, including cards of two different types of dessert, two different flavours/types, and cards, and each different appearance of la préposition à (see Resources). Instruct students in each group to create two different desserts and match the correct preposition to link the dessert and flavour/type. Allow time for students to complete the task. Combine groups so that there are two large groups. Instruct students to take turns reading the dessert they have created out loud, and expressing whether or not they like it by adding the or card. Observe students presenting. Once groups have finished, ask students to put the cards back in the envelopes and hand them back. Activity 3: (15 mins) Hand out a Cuisine Française worksheet to each student (see Resources). Ask students fill in the articles (le/la/l /les) for each example. Allow time for students to fill in the answers. Go over the answers as a class. Students should write answers in a different colour if they added the wrong article (allows for review and learning). Remind students of the grammar rules regarding adding la préposition à. Encourage students to write the rules down at the top of their worksheet. Once they have added the preposition, they should fill out the blank to describe whether or not they like the dessert. Provide time for students to complete the worksheet. Go over answers as a class. Ask students to mark in a different colour the right answer for any that they didn t get. Collect sheet to assess for understanding.
