1 ENSEIGNER L ANGLAIS AVEC LA COLLECTION TIP TONGUE / TOM ET LE SECRET DU HAUNTED CASTLE, SEMAINE 8 Dossier pédagogique élaboré par Stéphanie Benson, directrice de la collection Tip Tongue et maître de conférences en anglais et didactique à l université Bordeaux-Montaigne Niveau : Cycle 3 ou début cycle 4. Classe : CM1, CM2 ou 6 e, voire 5 e, selon le niveau des élèves et les enseignements antérieurs. Tâche finale proposée : Créer une pièce de théâtre en anglais à partir du roman. WEEK EIGHT / Séances 29 & 30 Consolidation Chapters one to ten et lecture Chapter eleven (première moitié) Cette semaine, nous poursuivons la lecture du roman avec l avant-dernier chapitre. En fonction de la tâche finale choisie, vous pouvez ajouter des moments d anglais, mais ce chapitre introduit du vocabulaire inconnu. C est pourquoi les deux derniers chapitres sont traités plus lentement, une semaine par chapitre. Vous pouvez découper le chapitre en plusieurs parties et former des groupes, chaque groupe proposera le résumé d une des parties, d abord en français puis en anglais. Le chapitre 11 peut cette semaine être découpé en deux parties, du début à I can hear the men, he said to James en bas de la page 91, puis de I know, said James à la fin du chapitre. Même si on écoute le chapitre tous ensemble, l avantage de faire travailler par petits groupes est de voir que les stratégies d accès au sens commencent à se mettre en place et à quel point les élèves sont capables de déchiffrer déjà la langue étrangère. 1

2 N oubliez pas que le plus important est de lire et écouter l histoire. Tout le principe des livres Tip Tongue est que les élèves aient du plaisir à lire et écouter une histoire. N hésitez pas à piocher dans les questions et traductions données dans chaque fiche pédagogique. Vous n avez pas besoin de répéter toutes les phrases de manière exhaustive si les élèves ont compris et ont su reformuler. Les questions et traductions sont là pour vous aider, mais ne sont nullement une obligation! Rituel du cours d anglais : What time is it? Oh, it s English time! Come on! Rappel 1 (se présenter, demander comment on va) : Hello Puppet / Teacher! How are you today? Rappel 2 (vocabulaire objets puis couverture du livre) : What s this? Distribution des livres : Who s book is this? It s (nom d un élève) s book. Here you are (nom d un élève). This is your book. L élève répond au moins : Thank you, Teacher. Mieux encore : Yes, this is my book. On peut faire le rappel des chapitres précédents à partir des images de début de chapitre. On peut ainsi mettre en place un rituel de questions à partir de l image au début du chapitre 10 : So, what do we know? Who s this? (C est qui?) What s this? (C est quoi?) Where is she / he? (Où est-elle / il?) What s she / he doing? (Que fait-elle / il?) What does she / he say? (Que dit-elle / il?) Do you remember? Who s this? This is Tom, Akira and Akira s brother James. Where are they? They are in the snow. They want to get back to the castle. What do they see? 2

3 They see lights in the snow. What are the lights? They are William Tate and his friends. They have seen James, Tom and Akira. They mustn t catch them because maybe they will kill James. On essaie de récupérer le plus d éléments possible de la trace écrite de la séance précédente. Si les élèves ne se souviennent pas, ils peuvent regarder sur leur English copy book pour se remémorer. So What s the story? The story is called Tom et le secret du Haunted Castle. Tom is with his father in Scotland. They arrive in Edinburgh airport then drive to Airth Castle. It s a haunted castle. Tom s father has reserved haunted rooms. They listen to Mr McKenzie who tells the story of the castle ghost. Tom goes to his room. He hears knocking. He goes to the library and finds Akira McKenzie. Akira is Mr McKenzie s daughter. She is trying to find her brother James. He underlined words in a book: library, fireplace, secret passage. Tom says he will help Akira find James. They look at the underlined words. There is a secret passage, a fireplace and a switch. Tom says they have to find a secret switch. Akira and Tom switch books in the library and the secret passage opens. They follow the secret passage and discover a lake. They look for a camp, but the snow is to thick. They are lost. Akira calls for Mack. The poney finds them, but there is too much snow. They have to find a shelter. Suddenly they hear a whistle. It s James. James explains he wants to stop William Tate killing wild animals. He films the illegal killing. He needs Akira and Tom to take the memory cards to the police. But first, they must get back to the castle. But William Tate and his friends see them. Very good! Perfect! Excellent! Let s listen to the beginning of chapter eleven! Ré-écoute de chaque phrase en anglais deux ou trois fois suivie de l explication en français. Répétition à voix haute tous ensemble par les élèves de la phrase en anglais. 3

4 On demande à un élève de donner la traduction en français, puis on le félicite ou on lui demande s il est sûr de lui en anglais : What does that mean? The hunt is on. It s the title of chapter eleven. La chasse a commencé. Do we think William Tate will catch Tom, Akira and James? Let s see what happens! What does that mean? Quick! We have to separate. Akira, you ride* to the castle as fast as you can. Get the manager to call the police. Réponse Vite! Nous devons nous séparer. Akira, rejoins le château à cheval aussi vite que possible. Fais en sorte que le directeur appelle la police / Dis au directeur d appeler la police. Now go! Vas-y! Now Tom, listen to me. À présent, Tom, écoute-moi. We re going to act as a decoy. Nous allons servir d appât. Do you know what a decoy is? Sais-tu ce qu est un appât? It s the opposite to a clue. A clue helps you understand a situation. But we don t want Bill Tate and his men to understand that Akira is riding to the castle. Tom nodded. So we have to hide her tracks. You brush the branch over the tracks like this. Et à présent nous prenons une direction différente. Mais nous ne dissimulons pas nos traces. Au contraire, nous nous parlons très fort. La trace écrite sera élaborée à partir des phrases des élèves, puis corrigée collectivement et recopiée dans les cahiers. Celle donnée ici est seulement une indication et pas un modèle absolu. On peut ainsi mettre en place un rituel de questions à partir d une image, comme on l a fait dans les séances précédentes : Who s this? Where is she / he? What s she / he doing? Baisse la tête. J ai creusé un trou ici pour me cacher. J ai une autre caméra ici pour filmer Tate et ses amis. Le trou était petit. Mais James et Tom étaient protégés du vent et de la neige. James alluma sa caméra. Afin de filmer les hommes quand ils viendraient les chasser. Maintenant nous ne devons plus faire de bruit / devons rester silencieux. Et espérer que la police arrive vite. 7

8 Bill**! I ve found them! Bill! Je les ai trouvés! They re here. Come out. You can t stay in there for ever! said a second voice. All we have to do is wait. Tom was trembling. James put an arm round him. And Tom felt better. This is Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham of Police Scotland. Put your weapons on the ground. And your hands in the air. Move away from the bushes immediately. Or we ll shoot. Ils sont ici. Sortez. Vous ne pouvez pas rester là-dedans indéfiniment / pour toujours / pour le reste de votre vie! dit une deuxième voix. Tout ce que nous devons faire est d attendre. Tom tremblait. James l entoura de son bras. Et Tom se sentit mieux. Je suis le lieutenant (équivalent) Malcolm Graham de la police d Écosse. Posez vos armes sur le sol. Et mettez les mains en l air. Éloignez-vous des buissons immédiatement. Sinon nous ouvrons le feu / nous vous tirerons dessus. * En anglais ce sont les mains et les genoux qui touchent le sol. ** Vérifier que Bill en tant que diminutif de William est compris par les élèves. C est un des amis de William (Bill) Tate qui a trouvé Tom et James. Very good! Perfect! Excellent! // Are you sure? Is that right? So what s happened in the story? He tells Bill and his men to put their weapons on the ground, or the police will shoot. 8
