1 Proposition de sujet de thèse Titre : Intensification par ultrasons du procédé de séparation membranaire en industrie laitière : de l échelle nanométrique au pilote industriel Directeur de thèse : Frédéric PIGNON (+33 (0) , pignon@ujfgrenoble.fr) Co- Directeurs : Nicolas Hengl (nicolas.hengl@ujf-grenoble.fr) Stéphane Baup (stephane.baup@ ujf-grenoble.fr) Laboratoire d accueil: Laboratoire de Rhéologie (UMR 5520) Développement du sujet de recherche La séparation membranaire est utilisée à grande échelle dans le secteur de l'ingénierie de l'environnement pour la purification des eaux ou des effluents ou encore dans les applications agro-alimentaires. Pour toutes ces applications, malgré les avantages et le potentiel que présente cette opération de séparation membranaire, il existe actuellement une limitation à son développement qui réside dans la stabilité du phénomène de polarisation de concentration. Sous l'action des forces de pression et d'écoulement de cisaillement au voisinage des membranes, l'augmentation de la concentration en macromolécules ou en particules colloïdales peut entraîner la formation de gels concentrés et conduire à une instabilité du procédé. La formation de dépôts irréversibles réduit alors fortement la performance du procédé et nécessitent des opérations de nettoyage coûteuses en temps et en énergie. Objectifs Les objectifs du projet sont premièrement d apporter une compréhension et une maîtrise des phénomènes de décolmatage et des gains en termes de rendements de flux de perméation, induits par l application d ultrasons in-situ au voisinage des membranes de filtration. L exploration des mécanismes de concentration et de structuration avec et sans ultrasons de suspensions de micelles de caséines sera effectuée aux échelles nanométriques grâce à l utilisation de méthodologies et de cellules de filtration récemment développées en collaboration avec des chercheurs de l European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Ces cellules de filtration originales ont permis d apporter une avancée importante sur la caractérisation par diffusion de rayons x aux petits angles lors de l ultrafiltration et de l application simultanée d ultrasons sur des suspensions de nanocristaux d amidon et de colloïdes d argiles. Les nouvelles avancées techniques sur ces méthodologies permettront de pouvoir étendre ces résultats à la filtration de suspensions de micelles de caséines, principaux constituants des laits écrémés traités systématiquement par filtration pour la production de tous les produits laitiers. Méthodologie Ce projet vise à mener une étude complète multi-échelle (pilote de laboratoire vers semiindustriel) pour proposer des solutions innovantes d intensification du procédé de séparation membranaire en industrie laitière et traitement des eaux de procédés, par l application d ondes ultrasonores in-situ. Aux échelles nanométriques : des méthodologies originales de caractérisation in-situ par diffusion de rayons x aux petits angles des couches de polarisation de concentration, seront

2 mises en œuvre en collaboration avec l'european Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Elles permettront d'accéder aux évolutions temporelles et spatiales (50 micromètres) des structures formées de quelques nanomètres à la centaine de nanomètres, au cours de la filtration et sous champs ultrasonores. A l échelle du pilote : Parallèlement, on cherchera à adapter et à développer ces techniques ultrasonores maîtrisées à petite échelle, sur un pilote de séparation membranaire semi-industriel existant. En collaboration avec la SOREDAB centre de recherche du Groupe Bongrain, on étudiera les différentes solutions technologiques permettant de transférer les connaissances acquises sur le pilote de laboratoire vers l application industrielle. Résultats attendus Les résultats attendus sont : i) L'identification des paramètres structuraux issus des expériences de diffusion dans les couches de polarisation de concentration (gradient de concentration, organisation spatiale) ii) la maîtrise des performances de la séparation grâce à une désagrégation et re-dispersion des objets filtrés par les ondes ultrasonores dans les couches concentrées. iii) l'optimisation des performances de la séparation par la mise en relation des données structurales avec les caractéristiques macroscopiques de la filtration iv) l'obtention d'informations structurales pour le développement de la modélisation de la séparation membranaire et le dimensionnement des installations industrielles. Interdisciplinarité Ce projet bénéficiera de la mise en commun des compétences interdisciplinaires notamment avec l'"european Synchrotron Radiation Facility" (ligne ID2 «High Brilliance Beamline») l'espci (laboratoire PMMH, Paris) le LEM (UMR 7569, Nancy) et Laboratoire de Génie des Procédés Papetiers, LGP2 (UMR CNRS 5518). Profil du candidat Ce projet de recherche, par une approche multi-échelle, se veut par essence pluridisciplinaire. Cependant les nombreux échanges déjà établis entre les différents partenaires de ce projet apporteront un soutien conséquent au candidat pour démarrer ses recherches et aboutir aux objectifs fixés. Un candidat possédant des compétences principalement dans le domaine du génie des procédés ou des écoulements de fluides complexes ainsi que des notions en science des colloïdes et séparation membranaire seront un apport certain à l appréhension du sujet, pour aboutir rapidement aux résultats escomptés.

Typical areas include pharmaceutical, bio and agroindustries, as well as the treatment of residual water, and sludge. Although, membrane separation processes have found key advantages in a variety of industrial applications, the main limitation of this process is the formation of deposit near the membrane. Elucidate the structure of the first layer of deposited nano-particles during the first steps of filtration, constitute a considerable technological jump in the understanding of the physical mechanisms implied in the formation of the deposits. It will be important to identify the effects of the physicochemical properties, the rheological behavior and the hydrodynamic fields on the organisation of the nano-particles during filtration. On the industrial level the comprehension and the control of the colloidal interactions and aggregations in the deposits of filtration constitute a major technological challenge for the development and the innovation of new methods of treatment. Purpose and Results Expected The focus of this project is firstly to investigate the structure and flow properties of the concentration polarization layers at nanometer length scales and secondly to examine the effect of ultrasound wave on the structural changes (aggregation, orientation) in the polarization layers and on the dynamic of the involved phenomenon. Structural investigations on the first layer during time and the corresponding permeation flux will be obtained thanks to the combination of small-angle x-ray scattering with recently developed frontal and tangential "SAXS filtration cells". In the treatment by the ultrasonic methods, an important axis of progress is the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for disintegration, desagreggation phenomena. It is necessary to determine the interaction at local scales between the colloids and the bubbles of cavitation or the mechanical forces generated in the vicinity of the membrane. Experimental Methods The studied solutions will be model nano-particles aqueous dispersions. The nano-particles studied will be either disk-like clay particles Laponite (1nm x 30nm) or plate like Montmorillonite (2nm x 500nm) or polysaccharide nano crystal (10nm x100nm). In order to probe the different length scales involved in this problem, it will be essential to use a combination of techniques such small and ultra small angle x ray Scattering (SAXS,

5 USAXS, SALS) typically exploring structural information from 1 nm up to several microns. Specific filtration cells will be developed in order to probe the effect of ultrasound waves on the structural organization of the colloids inside the concentration polarization layers. Interdisciplinarity This project will profit of the combination of interdisciplinary competences of the teams strongly implied in this project: the "Laboratoire de Rhéologie", the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the ESPCI (PMMH Laboratory, Paris), the LEM (UMR 7269, Nancy) and the Laboratoire de Génie de Procédés Papetiers (LGP2, UMR CNRS 5518). The fruitful collaborations established between these teams, as the joint publications proved it, will contribute strongly to the success of this project. Profile The candidate should have completed a Master s degree in science, fluid mechanics, chemical engineering, some knowledge in areas such as rheology of complex fluids or fluid processing. Experience with membrane separation processes or colloidal systems will help the candidate to easily start his work in this subject and to access quickly to the expected results. The multi-length scale approach highlights the interdisciplinary character of this project. However the multiple exchanges between the different teams strongly implied in this project, will help to the integration and the success of the candidate.
