15 Teaching notes This Vocab crunch activity will take about one hour and makes a good introductory lesson to the holidays topic. Once the cards have been copied and cut, they can be stored as a departmental resource for future use. The language can be easily adapted in the Word document should you wish to tailor it to your class or textbook. Before the lesson Copy one vocabulary list per student (p.1). The large cards (pp.2-12) are flashcards. You will need to copy one set of these onto card and cut them up to use at the front of the class. The small cards (pp.13-14) are for group games. You will need to copy and cut up one set for each group of four or five students (copy each set on different colour card as it makes it easier to keep whole sets together). Starter: 5 minutes Give students the vocabulary list (p.1) and ask them to write the English for any words/phrases they are sure they know already. They should then add up the number of words they know and write this total at the bottom ( première fois score). You will probably need to reassure them at this point that this is not a test and that a low score at this stage is perfectly OK they will just make even more progress during the lesson! Pronunciation drill: 15 minutes Hold up each of the large flashcards in turn, asking students to repeat the correct pronunciation and highlighting any patterns, e.g. the pronunciation of é ; silent s at the end of words etc. Elicit or give the English meaning for each word/phrase. Keep this fastpaced and engaging the aim is just to introduce each word rather than to memorise them all at this stage. However it s a good point to suggest ways to remember words, e.g. for vent, point out the link to the English word ventilation ; cavalières is a bit like cavalry etc Page 15 of 16

16 Card game 1 (French to English): minutes Split the students into groups of four or five. Give one person in each group a set of the small cards as a pack with the words face-up, and demonstrate the game to the class. The person with the pack reads out the French word from the top card, paying attention to their pronunciation. The others in the group race to be the first to give the correct English meaning, which the student holding the pack checks. The first student to give the right meaning wins that card. If no-one can give the meaning, it is read out to the group and the card is put to the back of the pack. The whole pack is then passed clockwise to the next student who repeats the process by reading the next French word. The game continues until all the cards have been won or the time allotted is up. The winner is the one with the most cards at the end. Card game 2 (English to French): minutes Students play again in the same way but this time reading out the English word each time. Players compete to give the correct French translation with a good accent. Plenary: 10 minutes Students return to the vocabulary list and write the English for all the words they now know, adding up their total and writing it at the bottom ( deuxième fois score) so they can see their progress. Once they have their scores, make sure that any gaps on their lists are completed correctly for future reference Page 16 of 16
