2 Les Rroms des Abruzzes Le peuple rrom 1 a quitté l Inde peu avant le X ème siècle pour des raisons encore inconnues et il est parvenu en Europe au début de notre millénaire. L un des premiers documents témoignant de la présence des Rroms en Italie est un passage de la chronique de Forli 2, en date du 7 août L intérêt particulier de ce texte tient à ce qu il mentionne explicitement l origine indienne des Rroms; on sait en effet que des raisons de conjoncture pousseront plus tard les Rroms à se faire passer pour Egyptiens, légende qui oblitère leur véritable origine indienne jusqu à la redécouverte de celle-ci à la fin du XVII ème siècle grâce à la comparaison du rromani, langue des Rroms, avec les langues indo-aryennes et notamment avec le sanscrit et les langues vivantes de l Inde centrale et de la région de l Hindus. Enrichie au cours de sa migration par des termes empruntés au persan, à l arménien puis au grec, la langue proto-rromani a donné naissance en Europe à trois types de parlers, parmi lesquels le rromani proprement dit, largement majoritaire, est caractérisé par un vocabulaire et une grammaire restés proches de l original indien; langue des Rroms d Europe centrale et orientale et des Balkans, il a depuis assez longtemps une forme écrite littéraire 3. A l inverse, les idiomes atlantiques (kalo des Gitans, dans la péninsule ibérique, et pogadi des Gypsies, dans les Iles Britanniques) n ont conservé du vocabulaire ancien qu un héritage limité et leur grammaire est entièrement celle de la langue majoritaire locale. Enfin il existe une série de parlers intermédiaires, parmi lesquels le mieux connu est le sinto-manouche, relativement proche de la variété carpathique du rromani proprement dit mais fortement remanié par une forte influence germanique. Un peu de la même manière, le rromani des Abruzzes est apparenté aux parlers anciens de la variété méridionale du rromani, mais il a été remodelé en profondeur par des contacts multiséculaires avec l italien et ses dialectes. Quelques éléments linguistiques allemands et slaves du sud, présents dans ce dialecte, accréditeraient l hypothèse selon laquelle un groupe aurait atteint l Italie centrale par voie terrestre, en traversant la Croatie et le Tyrol, pour se diriger ensuite vers le sud, en passant par la Vénétie et la Romagne; il semble toutefois que la majorité a traversé l Adriatique, passant d Albanie aux côtes des Abruzzes, du Molise et des Pouilles 4. Des sources historiques permettent de supposer que les premières implantations des groupes tsiganes dans les Abruzzes et dans le Molise remontent à des époques - -

3 antérieures au XV ème siècle; la petite ville de Ielsi, appelée Giptia ou Gittia dans les édits féodaux, aurait été leur centre de diffusion. Le nom Gizzi, qui figure désormais parmi les patronymes typiquement abruzziens, désignait les Rroms et leur provenance orientale. L étude des édits et des bans qui ont eu les Rroms pour cible de 1500 à nos jours permet de suivre la politique des autorités civiles et ecclésiastiques à l égard de ce peuple: il s agit presque toujours de mesures répressives (expulsion, réclusion, déportation) et de tentatives d assimilation forcée, c est-à-dire une politique de refus total. Les efforts actuels d assimilation sans discernement constituent une nouvelle atteinte à cette identxité qui n a cessé d enrichir le patrimoine européen. La communaute rromani Les Rroms abruzziens, de citoyenneté italienne, constituent un groupe relativement bien intégré dans le contexte socio-économique majoritaire. Jusqu au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, leurs activités traditionnelles étaient l artisanat (surtout forgerons-chaudronniers), le commerce et l élevage des chevaux. Le développement industriel, lequel s accorde mal avec la vie nomade ou semi-nomade, a rendu plus difficile l insertion sociale des Rroms. En ce qui concerne la pratique religieuse, les Rroms abbruzziens ont depuis longtenps adopté la religion catholique, au moins d un point de vue formel. Ils croient en l existence d un Dieu Créateur (Devel) et de son antagoniste, le Diable (Beng), ce dernier toujours situé en position d infériorité par rapport aux forces du Bien. Selon leurs croyances traditionnelles, les Rroms abruzziens pensent que le destin de l individu (Baxt) est tracé dès sa naissance; cependant, il lui est possible, dans certaines limites, sinon de le changer, au moins d en orienter certaines directions. C est alors qu entre en jeu la divination, forme de pratique magique pour laquelle les Rroms sont universellement réputés: chiromancie, bonne aventure, usage divinatoire des cartes de jeu ou autres rites bizarres qui constituent le plus souvent un moyen de profiter de la crédulité des ga e (les non-tsiganes) et que les Rroms appellent, avec une certaine ironie, Xoxàvdo Bàro (la Grande Farce). Au delà de cet aspect, on peut considérer que la préparation de philtres et de potions a transmis une connaissance de l herboristerie vieille de plusieurs siècles, ainsi que des formes, rudimentaires mais - -

4 efficaces, de médecine, de pharmacologie et de médecine vétérinaire. L institution fondamentale de la communauté rromani est la famille élargie, conçue en tant que groupe qui se reconnaút dans la descendance d un ancêtre commun. Les puissants liens de la solidarité familiale constituent la défense principale du groupe contre les pressions venant de l extérieur. Le système social est basé sur le respect des normes éthiques qui disciplinent la communauté rromani et garantissent l intégration de chaque individu. Le sentiment de dignité est une valeur fondamentale parmi les Rroms abruzziens et, pour éviter que les questions d honneur ne dégénèrent en pratique de la vengeance en tant que système juridique, il existe un tribunal coutumier, la kris, constituée par des hommes d honneur, Rroma Pativale. Ceux qui manifestent de mauvaises qualités morales perdent la considération de leur groupe et vivent marginalisés; une des punitions les plus redoutées est l éloignement définitif du groupe. Les rapports entre les individus à l intérieur de la communauté ne sont pas fondés sur une division en classes ou des hiérarchies sociales (bien qu il existe naturellement des Rroms riches et des Rroms pauvres), mais sur la reconnaissance générale de l égalité du droit à la dignité humaine. Le Rrom abruzzien a une conception non-hiérarchique de la vie et il regarde le monde avec une optique horizontale ; comme les autres peuples orientaux, il préfèrera ne pas s engager dans les entreprises à long terme ou dans des aventures abstraites de la pensée: son style de vie est soumis au ici et maintenant, tandis que sa sécurité psychologique est garantie par la cohésion du groupe et par la tradition. Un des moments privilégiés de l activité musicale des Rroms abruzziens est la coutume typique du BuÒviben, la sérénade, qui constitue l un des moyens reconnus pour lier des rapports avec une famille à laquelle on n est pas uni par des liens de sang ou d alliance. A travers la sérénade o havo tarno, le jeune homme, demande officiellement la main de la ha tarni, la jeune fille. - -

5 Les préliminaires et le développement de cette cérémonie suivent une tradition codifiée: après que le choix du havo tarno a été approuvé par ses parents, ils recrutent un groupe de musiciens, qui se rendent au domicile de l élue et exécutent pour elle trois chants, en prononçant son nom à haute voix, afin d éviter toute équivoque. Deux chants sont dédiées aux membres de la famille, pour gagner leurs bonnes grâces. Le matin suivant, des ambassadeurs du prétendant rendent aux parents de l élue les honneurs qui leur sont dus, en annonçant la demande en mariage du jeune homme. Le père de la jeune fille réunit alors le conseil de famille, consulte sa fille et enfin se rend avec les siens au festin offert par les parents du jeune homme. Si la décision a été négative, le père de la jeune fille déclare: Je n ai pas de fille à marier ou bien Ma fille ne désire pas se marier. Si la décision a été positive au contraire, la jeune fille est présentée au prétendant et les deux fiancés échangent des bagues. Les fiançailles ( nguòtiasiben) sont fêtées en musique et dans la bonne chère, tandis que les envoyés deviennent kirive di nguòti témoins de l alliance (litt. compères de la bague ). 5 Antonio Baldassarre (tr. fr. : Marcel Cortiade) L art des sons dans la culture tsigane L Europe, mosaÿque culturelle, est aussi une mosaÿque musicale où chaque peuple est gardien des rythmes et des styles qui n ont cessé de se renouveler à travers les siècles par influence mutuelle mais aussi grâce aux apports extérieurs orientaux et afro-américains. Les Rroms ont eux-aussi apporté une contribution considérable à cette riche mosaÿque culturelle européenne, avec des tons et des formes spécifiques, qui vont de la tradition populaire des Balkans au flamenco espagnol et des romances russes au jazz manouche francais. La création des interprètes rromani, avec ses rythmes, ses formes et sa virtuosité particulière, s est développée différemment selon les régions considérées et les conditions historiques et culturelles des pays traversés, pour arriver à une richesse difficile à embrasser. On sait que cette richesse des rythmes, des mélodies et des harmonies a été utilisée maintes fois par des compositeurs tels que Liszt, Brahms, Schubert, De Falla, Granados, Turina, Ravel, Debussy, Dvorjak. Pourtant, le mérite des Rroms n a jamais été pleinement reconnu. Dégagé depuis toujours du style de vie utilitaire des ga es les Rroms vivent - -

6 la musique comme l expression profonde de leur existence, comme un moyen de comunication de valeurs éthiques et culturelles, mais aussi comme un moyen de décontraction psychologique et de libération des répressions de la société environnante, si souvent sourde et inhospitalière. Dans son oeuvre Des Tsiganes et de leur musique en Hongrie, Liszt dit de cette musique rromani:...leur art est un langage sublime, un chant mystique mais clair pour les initiés; il est utilisé pour exprimer ce qu ils veulent sans se laisser influencer par rien qui soit étranger à leurs désirs. Ils ont inventé leur musique et ils l ont inventée pour eux-mêmes, pour se parler, pour chanter entre eux, pour rester unis; ils ont inventé les plus émouvants monologues. Pour comprendre cette musique, il faut la vivre à la manière tsigane et comprendre l âme tsigane. Parler de la musique tsigane, c est parler de la culture des Rroms et de son évolution, qui suit les vicissitudes d un peuple errant dans le monde, dispersé et opprimé, mais qui, soigneusement et d une façon extraordinaire, a conservé ses traits distinctifs à travers le temps et l espace. Un peuple caractérisé par son destin, par son fatalisme atroce. Par son errance vécue comme un soulagement de la douleur de vivre. La musique tsigane reflète l état d âme profond d un peuple qui a fait de la douleur et de la précarité les ressorts de sa virtuosité artistique. Elle est fille d une longue peine physique, morale et psychologique, d où ses traits élegiaques. dissonants, mélancoliques et rebelles, mais elle est en même temps une musique vivante, pleine d entrain, de rythmes pressants et de vivacité. L interprétation tsigane est créative, caractérisée par l impromptu; la richesse des rythmes, les agréments en sont des traits typiques, hérités de l ancienne école orientale et transmis de père en fils jusqu à nos jours. De l interprétation tsigane jaillit la force intime des Rroms, secret de leur survivance dans un monde contraire. Ces brèves images montrent les caractéristiques de l interprétation tsigane : dépassement de toute rigidité rythmique et métrique (le fameux rubato) par l imitation du flux naturel de la vie; lignes mélodiques toujours soutenues par un lyrisme dû aux expériences de voyage et de la vie en pleine air dans la nature; expression des sentiments et des expériences personnels à travers la disposition libre et subjective des dynamiques et des phrasés. Le besoin constant du Tsigane de s appuyer sur des éléments musicaux étrangers à sa propre tradition, de puiser dans les sources les plus variées, traduit sa nécessité, pour survivre, de se revitaliser à travers l échange d éléments absorbés au milieu ambiant. Dans la musique des Tsiganes se reflète leur - -

7 philosophie de la vie: le nomadisme, la marche en avant, l instabilité du domicile ne sont-ils pas traduits musicalement par les variations? Et trouver la façon de gagner de quoi vivre pour soi et pour ses enfants, n est-ce pas improviser, en langage musical? Et le besoin de briser la chaúne séculaire de l exclusion qui enserre les Rroms n est-il pas manifesté dans la vivacité et la richesse des impromptus rythmiques? L urgence de l expression est en réalité bien plus importante que le support mélodique, auquel il n est demandé que de se laisser modeler: l essentiel n est pas ce qu on joue, mais comment on le joue. Il est certain que les Rroms ont besoin de la musique comme les poissons ont besoin de l eau. Rappelons qu actuellement, environ 95% des Rroms sont sédentaires depuis des générations mais qu ils ont été longtemps nomades, ce qui explique l amalgame encore fréquent entre Rroms et nomades. Pourtant le nomadisme a cessé d être un trait caractéristique de ce peuple et il vaut donc mieux parler dans ce sens d implantation dispersée, sans territoire compact. Le mot tsigane vient du grec byzantin atsinganos non-touché (soit dans le sens d intouchable, soit dans celui d inviolable); il désignait il y a dix ou douze siècles une secte orientale errante et fut étendu par analogie aux ancêtres des Rroms à leur arrivée à Byzance. Il tend à se spécialiser pour désigner les Rroms actuellement nomades et englobe souvent aussi les Yéniches, Tinkers, Mercheros, Camminanti et autres groupes menant un mode de vie apparenté. 9 Rromanis From The Abruzziz The Rromani people left India shortly before the 10th century, for some unknown reasons and they arrived in Europe at the beginning of our millennium. One of the first testimonies of the Rromanis presence in Italy is an excerpt of the Chronicle of Forli, dated the 7th of August, This text has a particular interest to us because it mentions explicitely the Rromanis Indian origin. It is now known that for some conjonctural reasons they would later say they were Egyptians, a legend that obliterated their real Indian origin until it was found out again at the end of the 17th century thanks to the comparison between the Rromani language and the Indo-Aryan languages, mainly Sanscrit and various modern languages from central India and from the Hindus area. Enriched during its migration by loan-words from Persian, Armenian and Greek, proto-rromani developed mostly into modern Rromani, characterized by a vocabulary and a grammar pretty close to the Indian original. Spoken by millions of Rromanis from central and oriental Europe and the Balkans, it nowadays has also a written literary form. In opposition to it, the Atlantic idioms (Kalo of the Gypsies of the Iberian Peninsula, and Pogadi of the Gypsies from Great-Britain) kept only a very small part of the ancient language and their grammar is entirely that of the dominant local language. Finally, there are also some intermediate varieties, including the most known: Sinto-Manouche, which has certain similarities to Carpathian Rromani but is strongly influenced by German. In the same way, Abruzzi Rromani is related to ancient southern Rromani, but it was deeply changed by contacts with Italian and its dialects over the centuries. Some linguistic elements of German and of south Slavic, encountered in this dialect, may support the hypothesis according to which the group may have reached the center of Italy by land across Croatia and Tyrol, and, from there, going south, through Venetia and Romania, although it seems that the majority arrived in Italy through the Adriatic sea from Albania to the Abruzzi, the Molise and the Puglia coasts. Some historical data may let one suppose that the first time some Gypsy groups settled in the Abruzzi and in the Molise was before the 15th century; the small town of Ielsi, called Giptia or Gittia in feodal edicts and proclamations of banishment, would - -

10 have been the center of their «diffusion». Gizzi, which became a typical Abruzzi patronym, would refer to the Rromanies and their oriental origin. The analysis of these edicts and proclamations of banishment reveals the attitudes and policies of civil and ecclesiastic authorities directed towards the Rromanis since 1500: they deal almost always with repressive decisions or tentatives of forced assimilation, in other words policies of total refusal. The current efforts of blind assimilation are a new attack against this culture, which never stopped enriching the European heritage. The Abruzzi community. Abruzzi Rromanis form a well integrated group in the socio-economical background. Untill the end of WWII their traditional activities were handicrafts (mainly blacksmiths and coppersmiths), trade and breeding of horses. However, the developing of industry does not really fit with the nomadic or semi-nomadic life, and make the Rromani s social insertion more difficult. As far as religion is concerned, the Abruzzi Rromanis have adopted for a long time the Catholic religion, at least from a formal point of view. They believe in a creating God (Devel) and in a devil (Beng), who is always in a position of inferiority before the good. According to the traditional beliefs, the Abruzzi Rromanis think that one s fate (Baxt) is already written down at his birth; but it is possible for him to chose among some of its directions. Here takes place the game of divination, a sort of magic practice that built the Rromanis strong reputation everywhere: chiromancy, fortune-telling, the divinatory use of cards and other kinds of weird practices which are very often a way of abusing the ga e (non-gypsies) and which the Rromanis call ironically, Xoxàvdo Baro (the big joke). Among these aspects, it may be said that the preparing of philters and of potions did transmit a genuine century-old knowledge about medicinal herbs and also some forms of primitive but effective, medicine, pharmacology, and veterinarian medicine. The fondamental institution in the Rromani community is the enlarged family, conceived as a group originating from a common ancestor. Strong ties of the family solidarity are the main defence of the group before the pressure from the outside. The social system is based on the respect of the ethnic rules that bring the Rromani

11 community under control and guarantee each individual s integration. Dignity is a fondamental value, and in order to avoid fights about honour becoming seaking of revenge, there is a court, the kris, constituted by «men of honour», Rroma Pativale. Those who show bad moral qualities lose the group s consideration and live marginalized; one of the most feared punishments is the definitive alienation from the group. The relationships between the members of the community are not based on a division of classes or social hierarchy (even if there are rich and poor Rromanis), but on the recognition of everyone s right to dignity. The Abruzzi Rromani does not have a hierarchical conception of life but sees it in a horizontal way. As other oriental peoples, Rromanis do not like to get involved in long enterprises or abstract adventures of the mind: their style of life is rather of «here and now», whereas psychological security is warranted by the group s cohesion and by traditions. One of the favorite moments of the Abruzzi Rromanis musical activity is the typical custom called BuÒviben, the serenade, which is a way for a family to create ties with a family with whom it is not tied by blood or marriage. By using this serenade the havo tarno, the young man, asks officialy for the hand of ha tarni, the young girl. The preliminaries and this ceremony itself follow a codified tradition: after the approval of the havo tarno s choice by the parents, they recruit a group of musicians who go to the house of the young girl and sing three songs for her saying her name aloud in order to avoid misinterpretations. Two songs are dedicated to the young girl s family, to acquire their favours. The next morning, the «ambassadors»of the young man give the bride s parents the honours they deserve, announcing the man s wish to marry her. The father gathers the family council, asks his daughter for advice and finally the family goes to the feast given by the man s family. If the decision is negative the father says «I have no daughter to marry» or «my daughter does not want to get married». But if the decision is positive, the young girl is presented to the pretendant and both the engaged exchange rings. The engagement ( nguòtiasibe) is celebrated with music and good food, whereas the «ambassadors» become kirive di nguòti «witness of the union»(litt. «god-fathers of the ring»). 12 The art of sounds in Rromani culture Besides being a cultural mosaic, Europe is also a musical mosaic where each people is the owner of rhythms and styles that were continually renewed through centuries not only by influences on each other but also by Oriental and Afro-American influences. The Rromanis also brought their contribution to this rich patchwork of European cultures, with some specific tunes and forms from popular Balkanic music to Spanish flamenco, and from Russian romances to French Manouche jazz. The rhythms, the forms and the particular virtuosity of the Rromani performers creations, were developed differently from areas to areas and from one historical and cultural background to another, the result being a wealth difficult to embrace. It is known that this wealth of rhythms, melodies, and harmonies was used very often by composers such as Liszt, Brahms, Schubert, De Falla, Granados, Turina, Ravel, Debussy and Dvor^ak. However credit to Rromanies has never been really admitted. Always released from the utilitary style of life of the ga es, the Rromanis live music as the deep expression of their existence, as a way of communication of their ethnic and cultural values, but also as a way for psychological relaxation and for freeing from the oppression of the so often rude and inhospital surrounding society. In his work The Gypsies and their music in Hungary, Liszt writes: «...their art is a sublime language, a mystic song, understood only by the initiated; it is used to explain what they want without being influenced by anything alien to their desires. They created their music, and they created it for themselves, to talk to each other, to sing together, to stay united; they have created the most touching monologue.» In order to understand this music, one must lead a Rromani life and understand the Rromani soul. To talk about the Gypsy music is to talk about the Rromani culture and about its evolution, that follows the vicissitudes of a people wandering on the world, scattered and oppressed, but who carefully and in an extraordinary way conserves their own aspects and caracteristics through time and space. A people caracterized by their fate, and their horrible fatalism. By their wandering, perceived as an alieviation of the horrible pain of living. Rromani music mirrors the state of mind of a people that made of their pain and poverty an inspiration to artistic creation. It is issued from a long physical, moral, and psychological pain, from which it draws its elegiac, dissonant, melancolic and rebel aspects, but it is at the same time a living music, full of joy, of rhythms and of vivacity. The Rromani performation is creative,

13 characterized by the impromptu; wealth of rhythms and pleasure are typical of this music, inherited from the ancients oriental techniques and transmitted from father to son until today. Out of the Rromani performances, one can feel their intimate force, secret of their survival in a contrary world. These short images show the characteristics of the Rromani performance: overtaking any rules of rhythms and meter (the famous rubato) by imitating the natural rhythm of life; melodic lines always supported by a lyricism due to living outside and to travelling; expressing feelings and experiences by the free and subjective disposition of dynamics and phrasings. The constant need of the Rromanis to lean on musical elements different from their tradition, to take from various sources mirrors his need to survive, to revitalize himself through the exchange of elements absorbed where they are. Rromani music mirrors their philosophy of life: nomadism, going further, unstability of the home, aren t they expressed by variations? And earning enough money for the whole family, isn t it improvising, in musical language? And the need of breaking the secular chains of exclusion that encircle the Rromanis, isn t it expressed by the life and wealth of the impromptus in the rhythms? The emergency of expression is in fact much more important than the melodic support, which is modulated according to what the performers will: the most important is not what one plays but how it is played. 14 1 The word Rromani is the one used by the Rromanis themselves. It is an Indian word. One must bear in mind that today 95% of them have been sedentary for generations, but that they ve been nomades for along time, which explains the confusion between «Rromanis» and «nomades». Anyway nomadism isn t a caracteristic of this people anymore so it would be better to talk about scattered implantation, without a territory of their own. The Italian word Zingaro comes from Byzantin Greek αθιγγανος «untouched» (in the sense of «untouchables» or «unviolated»); it designed ten or twelve centuries ago an itinerating sect and was used to refer to the Rromanis through analogy to their ancestors when they arrived to Byzance. 21 I Rom abruzzesi Il popolo tzigano 1 è emigrato intorno al decimo secolo da regioni a nord ovest dell India, dividendosi in tre gruppi principali: Kalè (gitani della penisola iberica), Sinti e Rom. In Italia sono presenti gli ultimi due gruppi (Sinti nell Italia settentrionale, Rom nell Italia centro-meridionale). Uno dei primi documenti che testimonia la presenza degli Zingari in Italia risale a un anonima cronaca bolognese, contenuta nella Rerum Italicarum Scriptores di Ludovico Antonio Muratori, nella quale è riferito: A di 18 Luglio 1422 venne in Bologna un duca d Egitto, il quale avea nome Andrea, e venne con donne, putti e uomini del suo paese, e potevano essere ben cento persone. Il titolo onorofico di duca d Egitto deriverebbe dal luogo di provenienza di quel gruppo, una regione della penisola greca chiamata Piccolo Egitto. Il lavoro dei linguisti, degli storici e degli antropologi, ha confermato l origine indiana della lingua zingara: la lingua romani, o romanès, puramente orale, è una lingua indoeuropea, parente prossima del sanscrito e delle lingue vive dell India centrale e della regione dell Indo. Arricchita, durante l emigrazione, da termini derivati dall iraniano, dall armeno e dal greco, in Europa la lingua romani ha dato origine ai dialetti vlach (formatisi in Romania e parlati dalla maggioranza dei Rom) e ai dialetti non vlach (parlati dai Manouche, dai Sinti e dai Kalè). Gli studi condotti sulla lingua e sui dialetti zingari permettono di ricostruire l itinerario dei Rom verso occidente, seguendo la traccia delle trasformazioni linguistiche dovute agli influssi delle culture con le quali i Rom venivano in contatto. In particolare, per quanto riguarda i Rom abruzzesi, alcuni elementi linguistici tedeschi e serbo-croati, presenti nel loro dialetto, suffragherebbero l ipotesi che un nucleo abbia raggiunto l Italia per via di terra, attraversando la Croazia e il Tirolo, per poi dirigersi a sud attraverso il Veneto e la Romagna, mentre altri gruppi avrebbero attraversato l Adriatico, dall Albania alle coste dell Abruzzo, del Molise e della Puglia. 2 Alcune fonti storiche permettono di ipotizzare che i primi insediamenti di gruppi zingari in Abruzzo e in Molise possano risalire a epoche anteriori al XV secolo; la cittadina di Ielsi, che negli editti feudali è chiamata Gittia o Giptia, sarebbe stata il loro centro. L appellativo Gizzi, ormai entrato a far parte dei cognomi tipici abruzzesi, designava i Rom e indicava la loro provenienza levantina

22 Attraverso le gride e i bandi che hanno per oggetto i Rom (dal 1500 fino ai nostri giorni) è possibile ricostruire la politica delle autorità, civili ed ecclesiastiche, nei confronti degli zingari: una politica fatta di misure repressive (espulsione, reclusione, deportazione) o di tentativi di assimilazione forzata, cioè una politica di completo rifiuto. La politica di assimilazione indiscriminata, condotta nella fase attuale, costituisce un ulteriore pericolo per l identità della cultura zingara. La comunità Romani I Rom abruzzesi, di cittadinanza italiana, costituiscono un gruppo relativamente inserito nel contesto economico-sociale maggioritario. Fino al secondo dopoguerra le attività lavorative tradizionali erano l artigianato (soprattutto fabbri calderai), il commercio e l allevamento dei cavalli, la lavorazione del rame. Lo sviluppo industriale, che mal si concilia con uno stile di vita nomade o seminomade, ha accresciuto i problemi di inserimento sociale dei Rom. Per quanto concerne la pratica religiosa, i Rom abruzzesi hanno da tempo adottato il cattolicesimo, almeno da un punto di vista formale. Essi credono nell esistenza di un Dio Creatore (Devèle) e del suo antagonista, il Diavolo (Beng), che è comunque in un perenne stato d inferiorità rispetto alle forze del Bene. Secondo le credenze tradizionali, i Rom abruzzesi ritengono che il destino dell individuo sia tracciato fin dalla nascita; tuttavia è possibile, entro certi limiti, se non cambiarlo, almeno orientarne certe direzioni. Entra allora in gioco la divinazione, la forma di pratica magica per la quale gli Zingari sono universalmente conosciuti: essa viene effettuata tramite la chiromanzia, l uso divinatorio delle carte da gioco e tutta una serie di riti bizzarri, che spesso costituiscono uno dei tanti modi di approfittare della credulità dei Kaggè (i non-zingari) e che i Rom chiamano, non senza ironia, Xochàno Bàro (la Grande Farsa). Va comunque tenuto presente che, attraverso la preparazione di filtri e pozioni, si è tramandata una plurisecolare conoscenza dell erboristria, assieme a forme, rudimentali ma efficaci, di medicina, di farmacologia e di veterinaria. L istituzione fondamentale della comunità romani è la famiglia allargata, intesa come gruppo che si riconosce nella discendenza da un antenato comune. I forti vincoli di solidarietà familiare costituiscono la principale difesa del gruppo dalle pressioni esterne. Il sistema sociale è basato sul rispetto delle norme etiche che disciplinano la comunità romani e garantiscono l integrazione dei singoli. Il sentimento della dignità è un valore fondamentale tra i Rom abruzzesi e, per evitare che le questioni d onore degenerino nella pratica della vendetta come

23 sistema giuridico, è stata istituita la Kriss, un tribunale costituito da Rom Pativalè (uomini d onore). Coloro che mostrano di possedere cattive qualità morali perdono la considerazione del gruppo e vivono in una condizione di marginalità; una delle punizioni più temute consiste nel definitivo allontanamento dal gruppo. I rapporti tra gli individui all interno della comunità non tengono gran conto delle divisioni in classi e gerarchie sociali (naturalmente esistono Rom ricchi e Rom poveri...), ma sono basati sul generale riconoscimento dell ugualianza della dignità umana. Il Rom abruzzese ha una concezione non gerarchica della vita e guarda il mondo con un ottica orizzontale; preferirà non impegnarsi in imprese a lungo termine o nelle avventure del pensiero astratto: il suo stile di vita è improntato al qui e adesso e la sua sicurezza è garantita dalla coesione del gruppo e dalla tradizione. Uno dei momenti privilegiati dell attività musicale dei Rom abruzzesi è l usanza tipica del Bushvibbé, la serenata, che è uno dei mezzi consentiti per avvicinare una famiglia non consanguinea, con la quale non si è legati da rapporti di amicizia. Con la serenata o chavo tarno, il ragazzo celibe, chiede ufficialmente la mano della chà tarni, la ragazza nubile. I preliminari e lo svolgimento di questa cerimonia seguono una tradizione codificata: dopo che la scelta del chavo tarno è stata approvata dai suoi genitori, essi assoldano un gruppo di musicisti, che si reca sotto l abitazione della prescelta e le dedica tre canzoni, pronunciando il suo nome ad alta voce, per non dar luogo a fraintendimenti. Due canzoni sono dedicate ai parenti della ragazza, per ingraziarseli. Al mattino gli ambasciatori del pretendente recano gli onori dovuti ai genitori della prescelta e annunciano la richiesta del giovane. Il padre della ragazza riunisce il consiglio di famiglia per esaminare la proposta, consulta sua figlia e poi si reca con i familiari al banchetto offerto dai genitori del ragazzo. Se il parere è negativo, il padre della ragazza dichiara: Non ho figlie da maritare oppure Mia figlia non desidera maritarsi. Se il parere è positivo, la ragazza è presentata al pretendente e i due si scambiano gli anelli. Il fidanzamento (ngushtiasibbè) è festeggiato con musica e libagioni e gli ambasciatori diventano khirivè di ngushtli, compari d anello 3. Il modo inconfondibile di fare musica degli Zingari, con propri ritmi, proprie forme e proprie interpretazioni, ha tratto la sua linfa dalla regione geografica e dai condizionamenti storici e sociali dei paesi ospitanti. La ricchezza di ritmi, melodie e armonie della musica zingara è stata sfruttata da compositori come Liszt, Brahms, Schubert, De Falla, Granados, Turina, Ravel, Debussy, Dvorak, ma ai Rom non è mai stato riconosciuto pienamente il loro merito. Da sempre svincolati dai parametri di vita dei Kaggè, i Rom vivono la loro musica come espressione profonda della loro esistenza, come mezzo di comunicazione di valori etici e culturali, ma anche come mezzo di decontrazione psicologica, di liberazione dalle repressioni della società sorda e inospitale. Nella sua opera Degli Zingari e della loro musica in Ungheria Liszt scrive:... la loro arte è un linguaggio sublime, un canto mistico, ma chiaro agli iniziati, che viene usato per esprimere quello che vogliono senza lasciarsi influenzare da nulla che sia estraneo ai loro desideri. Hanno inventato la loro musica e l hanno inventata per se stessi, per parlarsi, per cantare fra loro, per mantenersi uniti, e hanno inventato i più commoventi monologhi. Per capire la musica zingara occorre viverla alla maniera zingara e capire lo spirito zingaro. Parlare della musica zingara significa parlare della cultura dei Rom e della sua evoluzione, che segue le vicende di un popolo errante nel mondo, disperso e oppresso, che gelosamente, e in modo straordinario, ha custodito i suoi tratti essenziali nel tempo e nello spazio. Un popolo caratterizzato dal suo destino, dal suo fatalismo atroce, da quel suo girovagare per alleviare il dolore del vivere, da quel ricominciare sempre daccapo. La musica zingara riflette lo stato d animo profondo di un popolo che ha fatto del dolore e della precarietà gli emblemi del proprio virtuosismo artistico. Essa è figlia di un lungo travaglio fisico, morale e psicologico, e non puo non evere tratti elegiaci, dissonanti, malinconici, ribelli, ma allo stesso tempo è una musica viva, briosa, piena di ritmi incalzanti, piena di vita. L interpretazione zingara è di tipo creativo, è caratterizzata dall improvvisazione estemporanea, risultante dalle conoscenze personali maturate nel corso della vita. La ricchezza ritmica, gli abbellimenti, i melismi, gli ornamenti, sono tratti tipici, ereditati dall antica scuola orientale e tramandati fino ai nostri giorni, di padre in figlio.
