Boston: Heinle Cenange, ISBN: COURSE DESCRIPTION: This summer Intensive Intermediate course will allow you to complete one semesters' work over the course of three weeks. This is a great way to jump start your French, as you immerse yourself in the language and culture in class and make use of Boston's many cultural resources with excursions to a French film festival, museums and even a French dining experience. Boston is home to a large French speaking population from France, Africa and the Antilles. This course utilizes these resources to help students gain a deeper understanding of French and Francophone culture. In this course you will not only participate in an intensive review of grammar and vocabulary, but you will also participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities to broaden your knowledge of the language and culture. You will discover the richness of the Francophone world and reflect on what culture means from different perspectives. Throughout this course, short works of prose on aspects of daily French life will acquaint you with the essence of what it means to be French in the 21st century. In addition, students will be exposed to French and Francophone literature through the reading and discussion of several works in excerpt. The course also utilizes film to develop student understanding of the language and exposure to culture and students will spend time watching and discussing short excerpts of films, TV and other media resources on a daily basis. This course enables you to fulfill your foreign language requirement quickly, allowing you to qualify for enrollment in more advanced courses in the fall, further study or graduate work abroad. In Intensive Intermediate French, you will review previously learned vocabulary and grammar while continuing to develop your ability to express yourself in oral and written form. You will spend approximately 12 hours per week in language classes, ensuring fast progress towards oral proficiency. Prerequisites: This course is designed for students who have placed into Intermediate French I on the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures online Placement Exam or who have completed one year of Elementary French or Intensive Elementary French at BC. There is a no make-up policy. ABSENCE POLICY: The department considers that any absence over and above 1 (during each summer session), are unexcused absences. Subsequent missed classes, unless officially excused by the Dean's Office, will result in point loss from the Class Participation grade. Students are wholly responsible for making up any missed work promptly following an absence. Late work will NOT be accepted. In order to excel in class participation and to make the most of this course, students must be present and must have prepared the items on the syllabus for a given day.

2 TESTS: (Contrôles) There will be 3 tests, one for each of the chapters covered in Interactions and will include grammar, culture and vocabulary. There will be absolutely no make-up tests. The tests are limited to approximately minutes each and will each have oral as well as written components. JOURNAL: Students will keep a personal journal to be handed in once a week, as indicated on syllabus. Three entries, of at least 8 to 10 lines each must be made each week. In the first two entries, students should talk about every day life, family, friends or other topics of interest to them. The third entry should relate to something that students have learned. Journal topics will be developed in class collaboratively with the instructor. DEVOIRS: Your instructor will assign activities from the textbook to be turned in in class. Preparation for class is essential for progress. Some activities are required while others are suggested. Nightly activities will be checked daily in class. Students who complete all activities, including the suggested activities, are entitled to extra credit. FINAL EXAM: The final exam will be a two-hour, comprehensive, written exam. It must be taken on Thursday, July 14, 2011, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. ORAL INTERVIEW: The instructor will conduct 10-minute individual oral interviews with students, to be held in the classroom. Students will receive individual appointment times and all oral interviews will take place from 5:30 to 6:45pm on Wednesday July 13th, The oral interview will be conversational in style and students will ask as well as answer questions on a variety of topics of personal interest, so that the instructor can provide feedback on each student's strengths and weaknesses orally. The goal of the oral interview is to assess each student's progress towards oral proficiency on a global level.
