Un francophone de l Ontario germaniste. Un francophone de l Ontario germaniste, qui est aussi docteur ès lettres françaises. Et traducteur au Parlement. Ai-je dit que vous étiez écrivain? C est peut être la fidélité de Daniel Poliquin à Ottawa qui l a conduit à explorer, sans déménager, autant de vies différentes dans le même décor. Vous êtes né, cher Daniel, à Ottawa, dans cette extrémité de l Ontario où vivent des centaines de milliers de francophones. Ici, vous avez bâti votre œuvre et votre réputation jusqu à devenir l un des plus importants écrivains canadiens d expression française vivant hors du Québec, où vous êtes d ailleurs très connu et très apprécié. Après une maîtrise en allemand, une maîtrise en littérature comparée, et un doctorat en lettres françaises à l Université d Ottawa, vous approchez l univers de l édition sous l angle de la traduction. C est à vous que l on doit de lire en français des auteurs canadiens comme Jack Kerouac, Mordecai Richler, W.O. Mitchell, ou Matt Cohen. Parallèlement, vous pratiquez la traduction sous sa forme vivante et immédiate, en exerçant, dès 1976, le métier d interprète à la Chambre des communes. Vous l examinez aussi comme un art et une technique, en intervenant très régulièrement à l École des traducteurs et interprètes de l université d Ottawa. Votre premier roman, Temps Pascal, témoigne dès 1982 d un grand talent de conteur, que viennent rehausser l humour, l ironie, et une grande inventivité. Ces caractéristiques s appliqueront a vos livres suivants, en particulier l Ecureuil Noir, et contribueront à l affirmation d une littérature francophone spécifique à l Ontario. Il faut aussi évoquer Le roman colonial, un essai historique dans lequel vous proposez une relecture audacieuse de l histoire des régimes coloniaux français et anglais en Nouvelle-France. Votre collaboration avec le très honorable Jean Chrétien est un autre moment très important de votre parcours. Vos livres ont recueilli un nombre impressionnant de distinctions et récompenses. Pour l ensemble de votre œuvre, vous avez été fait chevalier de l ordre de la Pléiade, vous avez reçu la médaille du Jubilé de la Reine Elizabeth II, et vous êtes membre de l Ordre du Canada. Il est donc juste que la France vous rende à présent hommage, vous dont les ancêtres ont quitté la Bretagne au XVII ème siècle pour venir s établir au Canada. Vous qui avez consacré votre vie et votre carrière à la langue, la littérature et l identité francophone ontarienne sans jamais cesser de vous intéresser au monde et à ses transformations à travers vos multiples métiers, qui sont comme autant d angles de vue différents sur l humanité. Which is why I am now switching to English - under the watchful eye of a fully bilingual museum director and a professional interpreter. As you can imagine, the pressure is real. Born in Rochester, New York, you started ballet at the age of fourteen. You were trained at the Eastman School of Music and you became the lead dancer of the Mercury Ballet Company, one of the first civic ballet companies in the United States. You then headed for New York City where you acquired extensive dance experience with the American Ballet Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and the William Dollar Concert Ballet group. When you moved to Montréal and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in 1965, little did you suspect that your dance career would blossom for almost 50 years here in Canada. In 1966, you became a founding member of Le Groupe de la Place Royale. This experimental dance company was the brainchild of Jeanne Renaud.

4 4 She was an inspiring figure, who insisted on bringing a fresh approach to choreography. You were already part of an avant garde project in Montréal, and hers was an enticing offer. In 1972, you and Jean-Pierre Perreault were appointed coartistic directors of the company. The company moved from Montréal to Ottawa and you became the artistic director in Until 1988, you led Le Groupe de la Place Royale as a company performing both original pieces and works by other Canadian choreographers. Faced with financial difficulties that threatened the company's very existence, you transformed Le Groupe into a choreographic lab, renaming it Le Groupe Dance Lab. A new performing arts R&D unit was born. As you once said, the creative process has always been more interesting for you than the performance itself, the process of being an interpreter with a choreographer was always the most thrilling moment. At the time, there were hundreds of choreographers and the audience for dance was dwindling : your idea of creating a dance lab was a brilliant answer. Through this new approach, you achieved your goals : you gave the public a better understanding and a much stronger awareness of dance ; you gave the dancers of the lab unique opportunities to work with internationally renowned choreographers ; you gave the choreographers the inside eye which allowed them to go further into the creative process ; and you provided producers with the opportunity to see new works at an embryonic stage.

5 5 As a choreographer, dance educator, artistic director, and mentor you have the ability to see the world through the eyes of others, to see their passion for dance, and to recognize and support the talent of the people around you. This was very beneficial to Marion Ballester and Lionel Hoche, the choreogaphers from France who have worked at the Lab. I am also confident that the upcoming residency of Tomeo Vergès will also yield some very interesting results. You have inspired hundreds of dancers and choreographers all over the world, and this did not go unnoticed. You won the first Jean A. Chalmers Award for Creativity in Dance. You won the Dance Ontario Award. You have earned the distinction of being the longest serving artistic director in Canadian contemporary dance. You were also awarded the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for lifetime achievement in the performing arts in It has sometimes been an uphill battle but despite the difficulties that you have faced along the way, nothing could stop you - simply because dance is your passion. After four decades at the helm of the Groupe Dance Lab, you are passing the torch to a new generation. Your creativity, energy and generosity will remain a powerful influence in the dance milieu and it is only natural that France should recognize such a remarkable career. It is therefore a great pleasure for me this evening to present you with the insignia of Chevalier in the order of Arts and Letters for over fifty years of tireless innovation and exploration in contemporary choreography.
