4 Acknowledgements Welcome to the 26th edition of the CAPER Annual Census of Post-M.D. Trainees. Today s postgraduate medical residents are completing the final stage of their initial medical training. Soon they will serve our communities as family physicians, surgeons, pediatricians, internists, anesthetists, pathologists, and the many other medical specialists who care for Canadians. The CAPER Annual Census report is Canada s definitive source of information on the numbers and types of physicians being trained to meet our societal needs. The Annual Census report is made possible through a longstanding partnership between governments, faculties of medicine and professional medical organizations. The federal, provincial and territorial governments listed on the inside of the front cover guide and financially support CAPER. Guidance and financial support are also given by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, Canadian Association of Internes and Residents, Canadian Medical Association, College of Family Physicians of Canada, Medical Council of Canada and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. 15 Background Historique CAPER (the Canadian Post-M.D. Education Registry) was established in 1986 through the co-operation of national medical organizations with an interest in the post-m.d. clinical education of physicians in Canada. The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents, the Canadian Medical Association, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Medical Council of Canada, Health Canada, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, have provided both expertise and financial support for the development and operation of CAPER. Provincial and territorial ministries of Health have contributed to CAPER since CAPER is incorporated within the by-laws of The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada with the mandate to provide accurate information which may be used for medical manpower planning on a national basis. To accomplish this task, an individual longitudinal file is maintained containing socio-demographic information and details of the current and past training programs of each resident or fellow under the supervision of the Canadian Faculties of Medicine on November 1 of each year. The data in this document are derived from information submitted for November 1, 2013 by the office of Postgraduate Medical Education at each of the Canadian Faculties of Medicine. 18 The Reporting Process Méthode de déclaration The individual records of all trainees under the supervision of each Canadian faculty of medicine are provided to CAPER by the postgraduate medical education office of the respective faculty. All post- M.D. trainees (residents and fellows) in training positions on November 1 of the current academic year are reported to CAPER. The following information is included in the yearly report: the faculty of medicine supervising post-m.d. training socio-demographic information previous medical education and certification, and field of current post-m.d. training This information is collected by all faculties at the time of registration for post-m.d. training each year and is sent to CAPER, in coded form. Information sent to CAPER is checked for missing or incorrect items. Reports are then sent back to the appropriate postgraduate medical education office of the Canadian faculties of medicine for further verification of the information on their trainees. Le bureau de la formation médicale postdoctorale de chaque faculté de médecine canadienne fournit à CAPER les dossiers de tous les stagiaires qui relèvent de la faculté. 19 How to Access the CAPER Data Tables Utilisation de la banque de données de CAPER The CAPER data tables are available on the CAPER website A hard copy of CAPER Annual Census of Post-M.D. Trainees is available upon request. Be sure to use the website to access the information you need. The CAPER Annual Census of Post-M.D. Trainees, the CAPER Provincial Reports, and the CAPER Individual Specialty Tables can be found at The CAPER database has been designed to serve as an information resource for physician workforce planning on a national and provincial or regional basis in Canada. Information is held in an individual longitudinal format to permit the study of the flow of trainees through the post-m.d. training system. Although information permitting the identification of individuals is not released from CAPER, group data tabulations and statistics will be prepared in response to requests. Preparation will be on a cost-recovery basis. Data requests made to CAPER are welcome. Following are these definitions and other important details pertaining to the specific variables used in the tables presented in this document. Faculty of Medicine Providing Post-M.D. Training The faculty of medicine supervising the post-m.d. trainee on November 1 of the report year. Field of Post-M.D. Training The type of non-specialized training, family medicine training, or the speciality field in which a trainee is enrolled on November 1 of the report year. Several subspecialties have multiple entry points. For example, anaesthesiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and general surgery all have critical care subspecialties. As individuals transition from primary to subspecialty training, CAPER counts them within the subspecialty field that is consistent with their prior training. Clinician Investigator Program This is a training program accredited by the RCPSC for the purpose of providing additional research skills for physicians who are registered in one of the specialty or subspecialty training programs. Physicians reported in the A-5 table have already been included within their specialty training field in all other tables.
