5 #BEGEO A geospatial society in the making A recent United Nations study, the United Nations Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management, has once again unmistakably hit it home: the use of geospatial information is on the rise. There is a growing awareness that pertinent location data are a vital element of the decisionmaking process. Many technological breakthroughs will have a huge impact in coming years. At the same time, the amount of data with a location component is growing rapidly and the number of potential applications for such data is constantly increasing. We must not underestimate the direct and indirect economic impact of geo services. The consultancy firm OXERA recently calculated that the use of GPS can cut time spent travelling by 1.1 billion hours every year. Belgium s strong GEO-ICT sector is ready to offer services with considerable added value. According to recent statistics from Agoria, GEO-ICT companies (of which there are currently around 70) have created over 2,000 high-value jobs and generate an annual turnover of 304 million. This business guide provides information about GEO-ICT companies with experience and expertise in a number of fields, including: - thermography, analysing light pollution, remote sensing, and LIDAR (acquiring data using satellite data, airplanes, UAVs or mobile mapping); - analysing, processing and combining geographic and other types of data (incorporation and interpretation, combining with other data); - developing, supplying and supporting GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software; - developing applications with a geo component for smartphones, tablets, mobile applications, and so on; - offering services based on geo-information and positioning for the private sector (e.g. geomarketing, track and trace, routing, workflow management, tourism). 6 #BEGEO - Een geospatiale maatschappij in wording Een recente studie van de Verenigde Naties (United Nations Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management) heeft het nog eens goed in de verf gezet: het gebruik van geospatiale informatie is aan een opmars bezig. Er is een groeiend besef dat relevante locatiegegevens een essentiële component vormen van het besluitvormingsproces. Heel wat technologische doorbraken zullen in de komende jaren een grote impact hebben. Tegelijk neemt de hoeveelheid gegevens met een locatiecomponent hand over hand toe en worden de mogelijke toepassingen steeds talrijker. De directe en indirecte economische impact van GEO-diensten is niet te onderschatten. OXERA consultancybureau heeft onlangs berekend dat dankzij het gebruik van GPS jaarlijks 1,1 miljard reisuren kan worden bespaard. In België staat een sterke GEO-ICT sector klaar om u diensten met hoge toegevoegde waarde te bieden. Volgens recente cijfers van Agoria hebben de GEO-ICT bedrijven een 70-tal op dit ogenblik - meer dan 2000 hoogwaardige jobs gecreëerd en realiseren ze een jaarlijkse omzet van 304 miljoen. Il y a une prise de conscience croissante que des données de localisation pertinentes constituent une composante essentielle du processus décisionnel. De nombreuses percées technologiques auront un impact considérable dans les prochaines années. Dans le même temps, la quantité de données ayant une composante de localisation connaît une croissance exponentielle, et les applications possibles sont également de plus en plus nombreuses. Il ne faut pas sous-estimer l impact économique, direct et indirect, des services géographiques.
