3 -3- Two tests 1) Live air traffic : The candidate has to listen and write the clearances from live ATC messages taped during commercial flights around the world. Most messages are coming from Europe, USA and Canada. At the end of the test there is an ATIS or a VOLMET. Each message is transmitted twice with a break of 10 seconds between two messages. Contents of live traffic tapes : 10 European live traffic messages (1 point per complete clearance) 4 USA, Canada, rest of the world messages (2 points per complete clearance) 1 ATIS or VOLMET (2 points) TOTAL 20 points <10 points 10 total<14 14 total<18 total 18 failed Level 4 Level 5 Level 6

8 -8- Purpose of live air traffic listening The purpose of this test is to check that the candidate : is able to understand different accents intelligible to the aeronautical community. Is able to listen and understand ATC messages on different flight configurations (ground, approach, en route ).

9 -9-2) Simulated flight + emergency/unusual situation: The candidate has to prepare a simulated flight (5 ). At the end of his flight, he gets an envelope with an emergency / unusual situation that he has to transmit to the ATC (no preparation time)

Durée maximale de préparation 5' 1) Annoncez-vous sur la fréquence de De Gaulle-Approche, en indiquant votre position et demandez à garder la vitesse élevée. 2) Après avoir collationné l ATIS, demandez les détails de l approche MOSUD car vous ne trouvez pas la procédure d arrivée sur votre FMS. 3) Signalez que vous ne recevez pas le VOR de Coulommiers. Faites vous confirmer s il fonctionne. 4) Au premier contact avec De Gaulle tour, demandez à faire une baïonnette à gauche pour intercepter l axe de l approche finale de la piste 08L car vous êtes trop près du trafic précédent.

SWR705, it s information E :RWY 08R for landing, wind 120/08kts, visibility 10kms, scattered 800ft, broken 1500ft, QNH 1013 Hpa, T+10, DP +8, QFE 1000 Hpa After Coulommiers proceed to MOSUD then heading 268 to MORMI. SWR705, CLM has been replaced by VTP frequency SWR705, speed 220kts, descend FL 80, report reaching with De Gaulle Radar Good bye. SWR705, turn right heading 060 to intercept the ILS 08R.Traffic 12 o clock, 1000ft below established on the parallel runway. SWR705, speed 160kts. 4miles from preceding aircraft. Contact De Gaulle TWR

12 -12- How to calibrate a simulated flight The simulated flight will include 4 messages pilot/air traffic controller - Contents 1 message for each group : group 1 : CONTROL ATC instruction as : heading, FL, speed, traffic information, restriction to follow, etc groupe 2 : METEO Weather informations as : ATIS, RVR, SIGMET, runway conditions, snow, turbulence, etc groupe 3 : PROCEDURE Holding instructions, taxying, radar vectors, SID, STAR, approach procedure, go-around procedure, route (AWY, PDR, AIRNAV, VOR, ), transatlantic route, etc groupe 4 : MISCELLANEOUS At writer choice, to make a link between each group and to keep for each simulated flight his originality.

13 -13- Unusual situation Our flaps have just jammed (stuck) on approach. We need to abort (interrupt, discontinue) this approach. I want you to broadcast (transmit) a PAN PAN message to ATC and tell them that we will enter a holding pattern while we carry out the appropriate check-lists. I do not expect (foresee) any problems with our landing at destination as (because) the runways are long enough. Nos volets viennent de se bloquer ce qui nous amène à devoir interrompre cette approche. Je veux que tu transmettes un message PAN PAN à l ATC et leur dire que nous nous mettrons en attente le temps d effectuer les check-lists correspondantes. Je ne prévois pas de problèmes avec notre atterrissage vu la longueur suffisante des pistes à destination.

14 -14- Purpose of simulated flight and unusual situation The purpose of these tests is to evaluate the candidate in accordance with the ICAO Language proficiency requirements criteria as specified in the ICAO language proficiency rating scale. 15 -15- Purpose of simulated flight and unusual situation Spoken language in a work related, aviation context. Grammar, syntax, vocabulary and pronunciation are judged primarily to the extent that they do not interfere with effective oral communication according to the ICAO scale. The examiner should be able to determine at the end of the test if the pilot is able to communicate intelligibly with appropriate words, information even in case of an unusual situation.
